Artificial light sources have a significant impact on the cultivation of houseplants. In this work, a novel single-phase dual-emission phosphor, Ca18Na3Y(PO4)14:Eu2+,Mn2+ (CNYPO:Eu2+,Mn2+), was synthesized and the emission spectra were modulated by co-doping of Mg2+ to better match the absorption of plants. The occupancies of Eu2+, Mn2+ and Mg2+ are analyzed by using the data of bond length from XRD Rietveld refinements and the emission spectra. The energy transfer process from Eu2+ to Mn2+ is proved through the photoluminescence spectra and decay curves. Benefiting from the efficient energy transfer, two broadband emissions peaking at 500 and 650 nm can be achieved, which meets the requirements of plant growth, and the luminescence colour can be tuned from cyan to white and finally to red by changing the ratio of Mn2+ to Eu2+. The internal quantum efficiency of CNYPO:0.18Eu2+,0.18Mn2+ is 76.8% under 340 nm excitation. The introduction of Mg2+ can regulate the occupation sites of Eu2+ and the emission peak position, improve the responsiveness to the plant absorption spectra, and tune the luminescence colour to white. Finally, a white light-emitting diode (WLED) device fabricated using CNYPO:0.18Eu2+,0.18Mn2+,2.16Mg2+ on a 365 nm chip has a high colour rendering index of 89.0 and a low correlated colour temperature of 3580 K, indicating that the prepared phosphor has potential applications in plant lighting and WLEDs.

Lead-free double perovskites (DPs) in the form of two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets (NSs) have emerged as exceptional candidates compared to zero-dimensional (0D) nanocrystals (NCs). This preference is attributed to their intriguing fundamental properties and promising applications in optoelectronics. Notably, NSs offer superior performance due to their enhanced surface passivation capabilities, facilitating more efficient treatment of surface defects and thereby enhancing optoelectronic properties. However, the realization of Cs 2 NaInCl 6 as lead-free DPs NSs is yet to be achieved. In this study, we successfully synthesized Cs 2 NaInCl 6 co-doped with Bi 3+ /Mn 2+ NSs. The two-step solution process synthesis enables us to achieve dimensionality control, progressing from 0D NCs to 2D NSs. Comprehensive optical spectroscopy analyses reveal that the NSs exhibit a suppressed non-radiative decay rate ( Knr ) of 5.03 × 10 −3 ns −1 in contrast to NCs with a Knr of 3.21 × 10 −2 ns −1 . This observation is indicative of a well-passivated surface in NSs. In contrast, NSs with identical composition and surface morphology significantly enhance the photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) up to 73%, which represents the highest PLQYs recorded in Cs 2 NaInCl 6 DPs to the best of our knowledge. Beyond fundamental investigations, the study explores the practical applications of these NSs as anti-counterfeit marks created on a flexible substrate, demonstrating robust emission under UV light. Additionally, the fabrication and testing of a light-emitting diode (LED) showcase the versatility of these NSs in optoelectronic devices. This comprehensive exploration of the optical, morphological, and application aspects of Cs₂NaInCl₆ doped with Bi³⁺/Mn 2 ⁺ NSs contributes valuable insights to the evolving landscape of lead-free perovskite materials, highlighting their potential for diverse technological applications.

This paper presents a straightforward synthesis strategy for N, S co-doped carbon nanodots (N, S-CDs), aiming to achieve CDs emitting ultra-wide redshifts while obtaining excellent metal ion detection performance. The N, S-CDs display excellent fluorescence (FL) emission independence regardless of the excitation wavelength or concentration. By introducing a single dopant thiourea, the FL emission of CDs was red-shifted from 445 to 575 nm (∼130 nm). The doped N and S elements are discovered to cause the introduction of defective energy levels and an elevation in oxidation on the surface of CDs, which could potentially be the crucial factor for the ultra-wide redshift of FL emission. Also, it is investigated that solvent engineering is essential for the redshift of the emission peak, which can also be an effective way to synthesize multicolor CDs. Furthermore, the N, S-CDs can be utilized for measuring the water content in methanol solvent based on their solvent effects. Additionally, N, S-CDs have the capability of detecting Mn 2+ with high selectivity and sensitivity. The interaction of CDs with Mn 2+ resulted in an obvious change in both the UV absorption spectrum and FL lifetime. To put it differently, the reaction mechanism between CDs and Mn 2+ probably includes mixed processes of dynamic and static quenching. Zeta potential tests additionally indicate that the FL quenching is strongly correlated with the surface condition of CDs. The outcomes and discoveries offer a fresh and viable method for achieving the simultaneous production of long-wavelength glowing CDs and their analysis and detection of metal ions as fluorescent probes.

In this study, we propose a novel strategy to reduce Eu 2 O 3 to Eu 2+ in the 34.88P 2 O 5 -13.57B 2 O 3 -34.88ZnO-16.67KBr (PBZB) glass system by introducing (NH 4 ) 2 HPO 4 as a reducing phosphorus source. Photoluminescence (PL), photoluminescence excitation (PLE) spectral and UV–Vis absorption spectral analyses revealed that the emission peak at 325 nm excitation originates from the 4f 6 5d 1 → 4f 7 transition of Eu 2+ , confirming the reduction efficacy of (NH 4 ) 2 HPO 4 . Furthermore, incorporating 7.14 % Mn 2+ into PBZB glass and adjusting the concentration of Eu 2 O 3 demonstrated that Eu 2+ doping significantly enhances the red emission of Mn 2+ at 630 nm. Specifically, when the Eu 2 O 3 concentration is 0.12 mol%, the Mn 2+ emission intensity reaches its peak, with a 32.6 % increase in photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY). However, further increasing the Eu 2 O 3 concentration leads to a decrease in Mn 2+ emission intensity and the appearance of Eu 3+ emission peaks, indicating a limited reduction capacity. Emission spectrum analysis showed a Eu 3+ reduction rate of 76.09 %. The effective energy transfer mechanism from Eu 2+ to Mn 2+ was verified through spectral overlap and decay curve analysis, with calculated energy transfer efficiency being similar to the PLQY increment. This study simplifies the Eu 3+ reduction process and provides a new method for optimizing Mn 2+ red emission in glass.

Conventional storage scintillators are plagued by rapid information fading during X-ray real-time imaging at room temperature, a consequence of intense X-ray excited persistent luminescence (XEPL) from high-density shallow traps. To address this limitation, we demonstrate a synergistic band/trap engineering strategy in RbCdF 3 :Mn 2+ via Cs + /Eu 3+ co-doping. Specifically, Cs + doping narrows the bandgap, increasing the carrier density for radiative recombination and boosting the radioluminescence (RL) intensity to 1000%. In parallel, Eu 3+ doping introduces charge-compensated defect clusters ( 2 E u C d · − V C d ′ ′ $2Eu_{Cd}^ \cdot - V_{Cd}^{^{\prime\prime}}$ ) that elevate the deep trap density to 933%. This synergistic optimization yields a high-performance scintillator exhibiting an RL intensity of 625% relative to BGO, an ultra-low detection limit of 102.3 nGy s −1 , and an ultra-weak room-temperature XEPL that is visually undetectable and weaker than commercial LuAG:Ce. Notably, the regulatory effect of this co-doping strategy is demonstrated to be universal across the ABF 3 :Mn 2+ series. Furthermore, a flexible scintillator film fabricated from this material achieves an ultra-high spatial resolution of 22.7 lp mm −1 , substantially surpassing most reported counterparts. It enables both ghost-free X-ray real-time imaging and stable multi-cycle X-ray time-delay imaging (XTDI) via thermal stimulation. This work establishes a versatile material design platform for high-performance, low-dose X-ray imaging in both real-time and delayed modes.

In the field of anticounterfeiting materials, simultaneously achieving highly efficient fluorescence and dynamic room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) remains a major challenge. Conventional systems often suffer from an intrinsic conflict between long lifetime and high quantum efficiency, limiting full utilization of both the “on” and “off” states under UV irradiation. Here, we developed (3-FPA)2CdCl4(3-FPA, 3-fluorophenylammonium), where intermolecular C–H···F hydrogen bonding among 3-FPA molecules influences the excited-state relaxation behavior, and Mn2+ incorporation further tailors the emissive centers, enabling multimodal anticounterfeiting combining efficient fluorescence and dynamic RTP. Mn2+ doping introduces new emissive centers and alters the excited-state relaxation pathways, enabling a nearly unity photoluminescence quantum yield (98.10%) under 270 nm excitation and a red-to-green dynamic RTP under 365 nm excitation. Femtosecond transient absorption (fs-TA) spectroscopy further revealed that the Mn2+ concentration strongly modulates the energy-transfer rate, thereby allowing precise control of the dynamic RTP process. Moreover, the designed anticounterfeiting patterns demonstrate dual-mode protection through the integration of efficient fluorescence and dynamic phosphorescence. This work provides new insights and strategies for the development of advanced multimodal luminescent anticounterfeiting materials.

Graphical A hybrid Mn 2+ -based metal halide (HMMH) was synthesized by high-energy ball milling (HEBM) for 25 minutes. A- and B-site co-doping of Cs 3 MnBr 5 are designed to form a more stable luminescent center and a hydrogen-bonding system. Poor luminescence intensity of Mn 2+ metal halides produced by HEBM and poor thermal stability of HMMHs were solved. Mn 2+ -based metal halides are important materials in the study of lead-free metal halides because of their high luminous efficiency, extensive availability of raw materials, and nontoxicity. At present, the synthesis of Cs₃MnBr₅ is impeded by the presence of intricate processes and environmental pollution, and the formation of crystals exhibits poor stability and low photoluminescence (PL) intensity. In this paper, an Mn 2+ -based hybrid metal halide was synthesized by co-doping Cs 3 MnBr 5 at the A and B sites. This synthesis was conducted under high-energy ball milling conditions for 25 min, resulting in a material with high photoluminescence intensity and temperature stability. In the new system, a hydrogen bond system and a [MnBr z (H 2 O) 4- z ] 2- z structure with high-binding energy are constructed. PL intensity of [Cs 0.85 (C 7 H 17 N 2 ) 0.15 ] 3 Mn 0.8 Mg 0.2 Br 5 · (6H 2 O) 0.2 is 302% of the initial value of Cs 3 MnBr 5 . The high-temperature thermal stability test of the samples was conducted using a platform constructed in our laboratory. The results demonstrated that the PL intensity after three rounds of thermal cycling is 374% of the initial value of Cs 3 MnBr 5 , which only decreases by 2.9% compared with the maximum. The solid-phase synthesis of Mn 2+ -based hybrid metal halides with excellent high-temperature luminescence stability has been realized, which shows a potential application prospect in the field of display.

Optical ions doped transparent glasses have attracted more and more attention because of their potential application in photonic applications. Unfortunately, optically active dopants occupy at non-crystalline coordination environment, which leads to their poor luminescence efficiency. Therefore, how to enhance luminescence efficiency of optically active dopants in glasses remains a great challenge. Here, we proposed a precisely space-separated strategy of donor-acceptor and successfully developed an intense red emitting composite borosilicate glass co-doped with CsPbCl 3 quantum dots and Mn 2+ ions. By rationally controlling post heat-treatment, CsPbCl 3 QDs acting as donor were uniformly precipitated in glass and Mn 2+ ions acting as acceptor are close to CsPbCl 3 QDs but not inside CsPbCl 3 QDs. Benefitted from high absorption efficiency of CsPbCl 3 QDs and efficient energy transfer from CsPbCl 3 QDs to Mn 2+ ions in glasses, Mn 2+ ions give an intense red broadband emission at 650 nm, 11 times as intense as the one without CsPbCl 3 QDs. The optimal external quantum yield of the as-synthesized composite borosilicate glass is estimated to be 28.5%, 9.5 times as large as 3% for the one without CsPbCl 3 QDs. The precise space-separation and energy transfer rate dependent non-radiative energy coupling mechanism was reasonably proposed to explain how CsPbCl 3 QDs highly absorb energy, efficiently transfer it and finally feeding Mn 2+ ion. These results demonstrate that the strategy of using microcrystalline with high absorption efficiency as donor, for instance, CsPbX 3 QDs, to pump optical activator ions as acceptor, for instance, Mn 2+ ion in glass may be very promising for developing high luminescent performance ions-doped transparent glasses.

A new aluminum-oxynitride Ce 3+ -Tb 3+ and Ce 3+ -Mn 2+ co-doped Mg 0·695 Si 0·695 Al 1·39 O 3·65 N 0.35 (MSAON) have been prepared by the high-temperature solid-state method at 1500 °C. The structure, photoluminescence properties, energy transfer (ET) mechanism, thermal quenching behaviors have been investigated. The MSAON host has been formed based on the co-substitution method of cation pair. Under UV excitation, the tunable-color emissions from violet to green and red can be realized by properly doping Ce 3+ /Tb 3+ /Mn 2+ ions. In addition, the type of ET mechanism from Ce 3+ to Tb 3+ and Mn 2+ both are confirmed to be electric dipole-quadrupole interaction. However, as temperature increases, the emission intensity of Tb 3+ in MSAON: Ce 3+ , Tb 3+ phosphor occurs a significantly rising trend until 493 K, which is caused by increasing energy transfer from Ce 3+ to Tb 3+ due to the effect of enhanced electron–phonon coupling with rising temperature. This property may be helpful for the investigation of ratiometric optical thermometry. Meanwhile, the MSAON: Ce 3+ , Mn 2+ phosphor shows an excellent thermal stability, maintaining 84.25% of initial intensity at 423 K. The results suggest that they could be feasible multicolor-tunable emission phosphors for potential applications for near -UV WLEDs.

In this study, the energy transfer (ET) mechanism among Yb3+/Er3+/Mn2+ has been revealed by download conversion (DC) and upconversion (UC) transients and steady-state fluorescence spectra. Moreover, the novel structure, inert-core/active-shell/inert-shell cubic NaYF4@NaYF4:Er3+/Yb3+/Mn2+@NaYF4, has been synthesized via a convenient hydrothermal method. With the excitation of a 980 nm laser diode, bright single-red upconversion (UC) fluorescence is observed, which shows the longest UC lifetime and highest efficiency compared with the other structures of NaYF4:Er3+/Yb3+/Mn2+, NaYF4:Er3+/Yb3+/Mn2+@NaYF4, and NaYF4@NaYF4:Er3+/Yb3+/Mn2+. The inert-core/active-shell/inert-shell nanocubes are homogeneous with an ultra-small (sub-20 nm) size, which is suitable for distribution and elimination in biological tissue. Our results indicate that the Mn2+ doping of δ-doped structures is an effective method to significantly improve UC single-red light, which shows great potential application in vivo bioimaging.

Mn2+-doped luminescent materials play a significant role in a variety of fields, including modern lighting, displays, and imaging. Mn2+ exhibits a broad and adjustable emission, hinging on the local environment of the crystal field and the interaction of the 3d5 electrons. However, it is still a challenge to realize the precise control of the emission of Mn2+ ions due to site-prior occupation in a specific lattice. Here, the formation of Mn–Mn dimers is proposed to be an effective strategy to design a novel red emission. Multimode emitters in Mn2+-activated AZn4(PO4)3 (A = K, Rb, and Cs) with unique [Zn4PO12] chains and [ZnOn] groups are observed to achieve regular green and unusual red emissions. KZn4(PO4)3:Mn2+ shows broad dual emissions at 542 and 608 nm, attributed to [MnO4] and [Mn2O7] dimers, respectively. While K is replaced with Rb and Cs, the Zn ions form [ZnO4] tetrahedra and [ZnO5] octahedra. RbZn4(PO4)3:Mn2+ exhibits a broad red emission at 618 nm, ascribing to [Mn2O7] and [Mn2O8] dimers. CsZn4(PO4)3:Mn2+ also displays a broad orange-red emission at 608–620 nm with increasing doping levels, deriving from energy transfer from [MnO5] to [Mn2O7] and [Mn2O8] dimers. This work provides a framework for creating novel red emissions from Mn2+-doped luminescent materials.

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) membranes have demonstrated exceptional adaptability and promising potential for precision ion-selective separation in aqueous solutions due to the fact that their pore size and charge intensity can be tailored through coordinated structural modulation. Chelation-assisted membrane separation technologies represent a highly effective strategy for separating and recovering similar divalent transition-metal ions (e.g., Ni 2+ , Co 2+ , and Mn 2+ ). In this approach, conventional chelating agents, such as ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), selectively bind to specific divalent metal (M 2+ ) ionic species in aqueous mixtures, forming negatively charged M–(EDTA) 2− complexes. By regulating the COFs membranes with appropriate pore size and intrapore charge density, the significant physicochemical differences between the M 2+ ions and the M–(EDTA) 2– complexes formed through the selective chelation can be leveraged to achieve their efficient separation. This enables the effective separation of Ni 2+ , Co 2+ , and Mn 2+ ions via membrane-based techniques. In this study, a two-step solvothermal–casting approach was employed to synthesize highly crystalline COF membranes with tunable content of the intrapore sulfonic acid (–SO 3 H) group. By modulating the –SO 3 H group content, the issue associated with the inherent trade-off between the M 2+ permeation flux and the M–(EDTA) 2− complex ion rejection efficiency could be overcome, and an optimal membrane separation performance was obtained. The synthesized membranes can selectively separate Ni 2+ , Co 2+ , and Mn 2+ in both binary and ternary systems through an EDTA-chelation-assisted dialysis process, which is remarkably stable under operational conditions. Furthermore, the membranes demonstrate superior M 2+ permeability compared with commercial cation-exchange membranes in EDTA-chelation-assisted electrodialysis. These findings provide valuable insights into the design of membrane structures for the effective separation and recovery of similar divalent transition metal ions (e.g., Ni 2+ , Co 2+ , and Mn 2+ ) in aqueous solutions.
