Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has emerged as a promising photothermal material for solar desalination. However, its limitation in integrating with organic substances constrains its application because of the lack of functional groups on its surface. Here, this work presents a functionalization approach to introduce three different functional groups (-COOH -OH -NH2) on the surface of MoS2by combining them with S vacancies. Subsequently, the functionalized MoS2was coated on the polyvinyl alcohol-modified polyurethane sponge to fabricate a MoS2-based double-layer evaporator through an organic bonding reaction. Photothermal desalination experiments show that the functionalized material has higher photothermal efficiency. The evaporation rate of the hydroxyl functionalized the MoS2evaporator evaporation rate is 1.35 kg m−2h−1, and the evaporation efficiency is 83% at one sun. This work provides a new strategy for efficient, green, and large-scale utilization of solar energy by MoS2-based evaporators. Keywords:molybdenum disulfide;functionalization;coatings;solar desalination

Chemical vapor deposition (CVD)-grown 2D materials like MoS 2 and WS 2 have been widely used for research and application. Here, we study substrates’ effects on CVD-grown MoS 2 and WS 2 . The morphology, crystalline quality and optical properties have been modified while changing substrates, which can be derived from lattice matching between 2D materials and substrate, defect/impurities on the interface and conductance/transparency of different substrates. The results provide suggestion for further study in CVD growth of 2D materials and device fabrications.

It is a highly relevant topic concerning how to improve the electrochemical performance of anode materials for the next generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Herein, for the first time, we report a facile and controllable approach to modify MoS 2 nanosheets , a typical 2D material , as an anode material for advanced LIBs via oxygen plasma engineering. An oxygen plasma treatment not only generates vacancies/defects but also incorporates heteroatom doping to form Mo–O–C bonds. This unique hybrid specialty enables the oxygen-plasma-treated MoS 2 to achieve superior electrochemical performance with high reversible capacities, a long-term cycle life, and good rate capabilities. The plasma-assisted modification is believed to be applicable for other 2D materials as an efficient anode for energy storages.

Intrinsic linear polarized optics discovered in anisotropic two-dimensional (2D) materials has attracted intense interest for polarization-sensitive optical and optoelectronic applications , such as black phosphorous, ReSe 2 , etc. However, the lack of matured method to synthesize high-quality, large-scale and air-stable 2D materials with anisotropic properties, is still an obstacle for practical applications. Monolayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ), which exhibits strong direct-band-gap light-harvesting properties, can be grown maturely. But unfortunately, MoS 2 does not show linear dichroism owing to its in-plane isotropic crystalline symmetry. We, herein, for the first time, report on an artificial control of extrinsic linear polarized photoelectric effect in monolayer MoS 2 , by successfully controlling its anisotropic degree of in-plane crystal symmetry via artificially induced uniaxial tensile strain . Strong linear polarization-sensitive photodetection from visible to near-infrared range is realized for monolayer MoS 2 -based device, and the polarization anisotropic ratio can reach up over 2.0 under 4.5% strain. The observation is supported by combination of experiment-theory study on polarized Raman spectrum and optical absorption under gradually applied strains. Our results have demonstrated that the artificial-controlled symmetry reducing of MoS 2 is a promising strategy to achieve high performance polarization photodetection. This method can also be extended to other 2D materials, which potentially opens up a new field to endow isotropic 2D materials with anisotropic functionalities by artificial structure engineering.

High-rate recombination of photogenerated electron and hole pairs will lead to low photocatalytic activity. Constructing heterostructure is a way to address this problem and thus increase the photoelectrochemical performance of the photocatalysts. In this article, molybdenum sulfide (MoS2)/cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanocomposites were fabricated by a facile solvothermal method after sonication. The CdS nanoparticles immobilized on the MoS2sheet retained the original crystal structure and morphology. The composites exhibit higher photoelectrochemical properties compared with pure MoS2nanosheets or CdS powder. When the precursor concentration of CdS is 0.015 M, the MoS2/CdS composites yield the highest photocurrent, which is enhanced nearly five times compared with pure CdS or MoS2. The improved photoelectrochemical performance can be ascribed to the increase of light harvest, as well as to the heterostructure that decreases the recombination rate of the photogenerated electron and hole pairs.Keywords:MoS2nanosheets;CdS nanoparticle;heterostructure;photocatalysis;photoelectrochemical properties

Uniform MoS 2 nanosheets assembling three-dimensional nanospheres are prepared by using a facile hydrothermal procedure with SiO 2 nanospheres as the template. The morphologies and structure of MoS 2 nanospheres are thorough characterized and evaluated as electrode material for supercapacitors . Galvanostatic charge/discharge measurements reveal that MoS 2 nanospheres deliver a specific capacity of 683 F/g at 1 A/g, and the specific capacity retains about 85.1% after 10000 cycles. An aqueous asymmetric supercapacitor is fabricated by employing MoS 2 nanospheres and activated carbon as the positive and negative electrodes, respectively. The specific capacitance is 65.33 F/g at a current density of 1 A/g. An energy density of 20.42 Wh/kg is obtained at power density of 750.31 kW/kg. The results show an attractive performance to take advantage of MoS 2 nanosheets assembling three-dimensional nanospheres as electrode material for supercapacitors . Two cells in series can easily light the light-emitting diode lamp brightly, further demonstrates the high energy storage capability of the prepared MoS 2 material.

Photocatalytic degradation is a potential method to solve pollution caused by waste lubricating oils. In this work, vertically aligned MoS2 layers are grown on Ti3C2 via hydrothermal method and the influence of the friction time on its photocatalytic performance was studied. The results show that friction benefits the improvement of the efficiency of catalytic degradation because of the change of photocatalysts’ morphology caused by the shear force and pressure from rubbing pair, which generates more active sites. MoS2@Ti3C2 nanohybrid with friction time of 60 min has the best photocatalytic performance in terms of waste oil (liquid paraffin) and methyl orange removal of 80.5 and 98%, respectively. The Schottky junction between Ti3C2 and MoS2 and the heterojunction between MoS2 and TiO2 can prolong the recombination time of electron–hole pairs and widen the absorption range of the visible light, which play a key role in the excellent photocatalytic activity of the MoS2@Ti3C2 nanohybrid.

Cell viability detection plays a crucial role in apoptosis and anticancer drug research. Compared with conventional colorimetric assays and organic fluorescent probe-based imaging, it is greatly desired to develop a simple and facile fluorescent probe for in situ real-time detection of cell viability. Herein, MoS2 nanoflakes are employed as fluorescent probes for detecting cancer cell viability by using their inherent tunable photoluminescence (PL) properties by ion intercalation. The appropriate amount of MoS2 nanoflakes for A549 lung cancer cells was firstly determined by MTT assay. After MoS2 nanoflakes successfully covered cells, the effects of the nanoflakes on cell morphology and mechanical properties were studied by atomic force microscopy (AFM). Then, the modulation of PL by potassium ions (K+) from cells was investigated at different cell viabilities. The results showed that PL intensity increased as cell viability decreased. Finally, the nanoflakes were further used as fluorescent probes to assess the cell viability change induced by anticancer drugs. The results showed that with the increase of drug concentration, the fluorescence intensity increased, indicating a decrease in cell viability. The ion-modulated PL of MoS2 nanoflakes makes MoS2 a promising candidate for applications in anticancer drug screening.

The structure and morphology of the substrate surface play critical roles in tuning the properties of the supported two-dimension materials (2DM). In this work, a simple strategy to engineer the SrTiO 3 single crystal into a trenched structure which is composed of atomically flat terraces and high steps of several nanometers is developed. Through the conventional chemical vapor deposition method, high quality single-layered MoS 2 nanosheets are successfully fabricated directly on the trenched SrTiO 3 (Tr-STO) substrate, which thus result in a heterostructure with well-defined interface and controllable corrugated morphology. The corrugated MoS 2 /Tr-STO sample displays a drastically suppressed photoluminescence as compared to those grown on atomically flat substrates. Detailed scanning probe microscopy in combination with optical spectroscopy measurements demonstrates that the photoluminescence quenching occurs exclusively in the MoS 2 area carpeting the high SrTiO 3 steps, which can be attributed to the significantly reduced bandgaps hence massively enriched free charges in these regions. This work not only provides a new strategy to tailor the 2DM properties by simply engineering the substrate surface corrugations, but also brings deep insights into the dependence of properties of the hybridized system on the interface morphologies.

A simple and green one-step method for the simultaneous exfoliation and functionalization of few-layered MoS2 nanosheets was developed via the ultrasonic treatment of bulk MoS2 powder in sodium phytate-containing aqueous solution. The as-prepared MoS2 nanosheets show high stability, low cytotoxicity and high adsorption capacity for Hg2+ in aqueous solution. The maximum adsorption capacity for Hg2+ is about 7.5 times and 3.7 times that of bulk MoS2 powder and unfunctionalized MoS2 nanosheets, respectively. The adsorption kinetics and thermodynamics indicate that the adsorption of Hg2+ is a monolayer chemical adsorption. Finally, the as-prepared MoS2 nanosheets were applied for the removal of Hg2+ in HepG2 cells and show a similar detoxification effect as that of the common antidote meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid, indicating the potential application of MoS2 nanosheets for biological detoxification.

We investigate a high-sensitivity surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor consisting of a Au layer, four-layer MoS2, and monolayer graphene. The numerical simulations, by the transfer matrix method (TMM), demonstrate the sensor has a maximum sensitivity of 282°/RIU, which is approximately 2 times greater than the conventional Au-based SPR sensor. The finite difference time domain (FDTD) indicates that the presence of MoS2film generates a strong surface electric field and enhances the sensitivity of the proposed SPR sensor. In addition, the influence of the number of MoS2layers on the sensitivity of the proposed sensor is investigated by simulations and experiments. In the experiment, MoS2and graphene films are transferred on the Au-based substrate by the PMMA-based wet transfer method, and the fabricated samples are characterized by Raman spectroscopy. Furthermore, the fabricated sensors with the Kretschmann configuration are used to detect okadaic acid (OA). The okadaic acid–bovine serum albumin bioconjugate (OA-BSA) is immobilized on the graphene layer of the sensors to develop a competitive inhibition immunoassay. The results show that the sensor has a very low limit of detection (LOD) of 1.18 ng/mL for OA, which is about 22.6 times lower than that of a conventional Au biosensor. We believe that such a high-sensitivity SPR biosensor has potential applications for clinical diagnosis and immunoassays.Keywords:biosensor;MoS2;graphene;SPR sensor;high sensitivity

Sensors for rapid and reliable detection of biomolecules are crucial for clinical medical diagnoses. Here, a rapid, ultra-sensitive, magnetic-assisted biosensor based on resonance Raman scattering at MoS 2 @Fe 3 O 4 composite nanoflowers is presented. Raman shifts and X-ray photoelectron spectra indicated that the composite was formed via Fe–S covalent bonds. Convenient magnetic separations could be performed because of the superparamagnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles. MoS 2 E 1 2g and A 1g Raman peaks were used as probe signals for anti-interference immunoassays. The probe unit of the immunoassay also included goat anti-human IgG molecules that were used as the target analyte. Au substrates coupled with the goat anti-human IgG were used as capture units to form sandwich biosensors. Because of the magnetic enrichment, the detection limit was improved by three orders-of-magnitude and the detection time was reduced from 1.5 h to 1 min. Sandwich biosensors using MoS 2 @Fe 3 O 4 nanoflowers as Raman probes could be very promising sensors for proteins, antigens, and other immunogenic biopolymers, as well as for corpuscular viruses and cells.
