Enhanced UV–Vis–NIR photocatalytic activity of La doped BaBiO2Cl: Role of oxygen vacancies

Jincai Peng,Yuehong Peng,Tianhui Wang,Zhijie Wu,Qi Wang,Yongjin Li,Zhaoyi Yin,Jin Han,Jianbei Qiu,Zhengwen Yang,Zhiguo Song

In order to make the most of solar energy, the development of efficient UV–Vis–NIR activated photocatalysts has attracted more and more attention. In this study, the UV–Vis–NIR broad spectrum activated photocatalysts La-doped BaBiO 2 Cl with abundant oxygen vacancies (OVs) were successfully prepared by solid state reaction . The experimental results and theoretical calculations revealed that La doping induced OVs in BaBiO 2 Cl, formed an intermediate level, extended the light absorption to the NIR region, and promoted carrier separation efficiency. Owing to the synergistic promotion effect, the optimal BaBiO 2 Cl–3%La exhibited obviously enhanced photodegradation rate, which was about 3.26 times higher than that of pure BaBiO 2 Cl under UV–Vis–NIR light irradiation . This work provides a resultful strategy for designing new full-spectrum-activated photocatalysts for environmental protection.

Targeted Immunoimaging of Tumor-Associated Macrophages in Orthotopic Glioblastoma by the NIR-IIb Nanoprobes

Hongqin Zhu,Feng Ren,Tingting Wang,Zhilin Jiang,Qiao Sun,Zhen Li

Developing dynamic and highly sensitive methods for imaging M2-type tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) is vital for monitoring the tumor progression and assessing the therapeutic efficacy. Here, the fabrication and application of rationally designed Er-based rare-earth nanoprobes for the targeted imaging of M2-type TAMs in glioblastoma (GBM) through the second near-infrared (NIR-II) fluorescence beyond 1500 nm is reported. The NIR-IIb fluorescence of Er-based rare-earth nanoparticles can be remarkably enhanced by optimizing their core-shell structures and the shell thickness, which allows for in vivo imaging under excitation by a 980 nm laser with the lowest power density (40 mW cm -2 ). These bright Er-based nanoparticles functionalized with M2pep polypeptide show notable targeting ability to M2-type macrophages, which has been well tested in both in vitro and in vivo experiments by their up-conversion (UC) fluorescence (540 nm) and down-shifting (DS) fluorescence (1525 nm), respectively. The targeting capability of these nanoprobes in vivo is also demonstrated by the overlap of immunofluorescence of M2-type TAMs and Arsenazo III staining of rare-earth ions in tumor tissue. It is envisioned that these nanoprobes can serve as a companion diagnostic tool to dynamically assess the progression and prognosis of GBM.

Novel Donor–Acceptor Conjugated Polymer-Based Nanomicelles for Photothermal Therapy in the NIR Window

Hanning Zhang,Shuangyu Tian,Mu Li,Jinhai Xie,HongLian Dai,Liuyong Hu,Lesan Yan

In this study, a novel donor–acceptor conjugated polymer PDPPDTP was designed and synthesized by D–A polymerization using 2,6-di(trimethyltin)-N-dithieno[3,2-b:20,30-d]pyrrole as the electron-donating (D) unit and 3,6-bis(5-bromothiophen-2-yl)-2,5-dihexadecylpyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4-dione as the electron-accepting (A) unit. The prepared polymer has strong absorption in the near-infrared (NIR) range of 700–900 nm. Moreover, it shows excellent photothermal performance under irradiation at 808 nm. Next, the biodegradable amphiphilic polymer polyethylene glycol–polycaprolactone was used to encapsulate the new conjugated polymer into nanomicelles by the microemulsion method. The obtained PDPPDTP-loaded micelles exhibited a regular spherical structure, and their hydrodynamic diameter was about 78 nm, characterized by transmission electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering. Notably, the micelles exhibited good stability, and the encapsulation efficiency of the conjugated polymer in the micelles was ∼80%. In vitro cell experiments demonstrated that the nanomicelles not only showed good biocompatibility and low toxicity but also could effectively inhibit the proliferation of breast cancer cells 4T1 under the NIR light irradiation of 808 nm. Furthermore, in vivo studies of photothermal therapy (PTT) efficacy showed that the PDPPDTP-loaded micelles exhibited a remarkable tumor growth inhibition in a syngeneic murine tumor model, indicating that the nanomicelles loaded with this novel conjugated polymer could be further explored as a new type of theranostic agent and applied in the PTT of tumors.

NIR-II J-Aggregated Pt(II)-Porphyrin-Based Phosphorescent Probe for Tumor-Hypoxia Imaging

Wansu Zhang,Shangyu Chen,Pengfei Sun,Shuai Ye,Quli Fan,Jun Song,Pengju Zeng,Junle Qu,Wai-Yeung Wong

The luminescence of traditional phosphorescence-based hypoxia probes is limited to the visible and first near-infrared wavelength regions (<1000 nm), which has defects of higher light scattering and lower penetration depth in contrast with the second near-infrared wavelength window (NIR-II, 1000–1700 nm) for optical bioimaging. Herein, 5,15-bis(2,6-bis(dodecyloxy)phenyl)-porphyrin platinum(II) (PpyPt) with J-aggregation induced NIR-II phosphorescence is reported. J-aggregates of PpyPt are confirmed by the X-ray diffraction data in the crystalline state. Moreover, the emission and excitation spectra of PpyPt in the solid states reveal NIR-II luminescence feature of PpyPt in J-aggregates. More importantly, by preparation of water-soluble PpyPt nanoparticles (PpyPt NPs 4.76 ) with J-aggregates, it has NIR-II phosphorescent lifetime of microseconds and good oxygen-sensitivity in water. Moreover, the good biological hypoxia-sensing potential of PpyPt NPs 4.76 is demonstrated in cells and 4T1-tumor-bearing mice. This study provides an efficient strategy to design NIR-II phosphorescent probe for sensitive tumor-hypoxia detection through the construction of J-aggregates.

Side Chain Functional Conjugated Porous Polymers for NIR Controlled Carbon Dioxide Adsorption and Release

Chen Liquan,Li Dawei,Ren Jinghan,Li Yameng,Gao Dong,Xing Chengfen

Conjugated porous polymers exhibit considerable advantage as attractive candidate for carbon dioxide(CO 2 ) capture. However, the regeneration of the CO 2 still faces the problem of high energy cost. Here we synthesize a near-infrared region(NIR) light responsive conjugated porous polymer(PDPP-Gu) [DPP=3,6-di(thiophen-2-yl)pyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4(2 H ,5 H )-dione] by constructing porous amorphous networks with a side chain engineering strategy to regulate CO 2 adsorption and release through photothermal conversion. The PDPP-Gu is featured by a torsional conjugated backbone as well as a functional side chain of guanidino group. The donor-acceptor configuration of PDPP-Gu afforded strong absorption in the NIR and an excellent photothermal conversion capability of up to 48.8%, as well as a high surface energy. Moreover, guanidine modified side chain further enhanced the CO 2 -polymers interactions, resulting in a high CO 2 selective adsorption capacity(0.8 mmol/g) at 273 K, 1 bar(1 bar=10 5 Pa). The adsorbed CO 2 can be released under NIR light irradiation. This strategy of molecule design combined the dual features of photothermal conversion and gas adsorption, which is beneficial for the development of materials to dynamically control the adsorption and release of CO 2 through NIR light.

CsBr- and H2O-Enhanced CsPbI2Br for UV–NIR Dual-Mode Photodetector with High Responsivity

Xiaoxian Song,Fuguo Wang,Hongwen Li,Haiting Zhang,Ze Xu,Dongdong Wei,Jingjing Zhang,Zijie Dai,Yunpeng Ren,Yunxia Ye,Xudong Ren,Jianquan Yao

Ultraviolet–visible–near-infrared broad-band PDs have attracted great attention for imaging systems and optical communications. Previous UV–NIR PDs have mainly worked in a single band. UV–NIR dual-modal detectors, which maintain a greater light response through nonlinear light absorbance in the second mode, remain to be explored. Here, a CsPbI2Br dual-mode PD is reported for the first time. The light absorption, phase stability, and chemical stability of CsPbI2Br are enhanced by CsBr and H2O. The device shows (UV–vis)/NIR absorption through one-photon and two-photon absorption. The CsPbI2Br PD has excellent (UV–vis)/NIR dual-mode detection performance under ultraviolet (405 nm), visible (532 nm) and near-infrared (808 nm) illumination, respectively; the device has high responsivities of 160, 36, and 118 A/W, specific detectivities of 4.9 × 1011, 6.3 × 1010, and 2.1 × 1011 jones and response times of 5.5/6.8, 5.3/5.9, and 5.9/6.4 ms, respetively. This work provides a route for UV–NIR dual-mode detection and promotes the applications of these PDs in photoelectric devices for weak light and wide spectrum detection.

NIR and Reduction Dual-Sensitive Polymeric Prodrug Nanoparticles for Bioimaging and Combined Chemo-Phototherapy

Shuying Li,Yanjuan Wu,Xiukun Xue,Siyuan Liu

The combination of chemotherapy, photothermal therapy (PTT) and photodynamic therapy (PDT) based on a single nanosystem is highly desirable for cancer treatment. In this study, we developed a versatile Pt(IV) prodrug-based nanodrug, PVPt@Cy NPs, to realize synchronous chemotherapy, PDT and PTT and integrate cancer treatment with bioimaging. To construct PVPt@Cy NPs, the amphiphilic Pt(IV)-based polymeric prodrug PVPt was synthesized by a facile one-pot coupling reaction, and then it was used to encapsulate an optotheranostic agent (HOCyOH, Cy) via hydrophobic interaction-induced self-assembly. These NPs would disaggregate under acidic, reductive conditions and NIR irradiation, which are accompanied by photothermal conversion and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. Moreover, the PVPt@Cy NPs exhibited an enhanced in vitro anticancer efficiency with 808-nm light irradiation. Furthermore, the PVPt@Cy NPs showed strong NIR fluorescence and photothermal imaging in H22 tumor-bearing mice, allowing the detection of the tumor site and monitoring of the drug biodistribution. Therefore, PVPt@Cy NPs displayed an enormous potential in combined chemo-phototherapy.Keywords:combined chemo-phototherapy;Pt(IV) prodrug;nanoparticle;bioimaging

NIR-II Fluorescent Activatable Drug Delivery Nanoplatform for Cancer-Targeted Combined Photodynamic and Chemotherapy

Qian Xie,Junzhi Liu,Bin Chen,Xiaoguang Ge,Xuan Zhang,Shi Gao,Qingjie Ma,Jibin Song

Nanotheranostics with integrated imaging functions can help monitor nanoparticle accumulation in tumors, thus achieving synergism and higher therapeutic accuracy in cancer therapy. However, it remains challenging to monitor the release of therapeutic drugs in real time from a nanoparticulate drug delivery system (nano-DDS) in the body. Herein, we developed a nano-DDS for fluorescence imaging in the second near-infrared window (NIR-II) region, which can be used for monitoring the responsive release of drugs and cancer-targeted combined photodynamic and chemotherapy. There is a linear correlation between the cumulative release of the drug and the NIR-II fluorescence intensity. Moreover, hyaluronidase/glutathione dual-response RGD-SS-DOX/Ce6@HA-IR-1061 (RSSDCHI) exhibited a higher tumor-to-normal-tissue ratio in NIR-II fluorescence imaging and enhanced antitumor efficacy in vivo. This makes it possible to visualize drug release at the cellular level by the nanocomposites and to predict the treatment effect according to the NIR-II fluorescence intensity in the tumor site, serving as a promising nanoplatform for precision nanomedicine.

Near-Infrared Activation of Sensory Rhodopsin II Mediated by NIR-to-Blue Upconversion Nanoparticles

Yaguchi Momo,Jia Xiaodan,Schlesinger Ramona,Jiang Xiue,Ataka Kenichi,Heberle Joachim

Direct optical activation of microbial rhodopsins in deep biological tissue suffers from ineffective light delivery because visible light is strongly scattered and absorbed. NIR light has deeper tissue penetration, but NIR-activation requires a transducer that converts NIR light into visible light in proximity to proteins of interest. Lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) are ideal transducer as they absorb near-infrared (NIR) light and emit visible light. Therefore, UCNP-assisted excitation of microbial rhodopsins with NIR light has been intensively studied by electrophysiology technique. While electrophysiology is a powerful method to test the functional performance of microbial rhodopsins, conformational changes associated with the NIR light illumination in the presence of UCNPs remain poorly understood. Since UCNPs have generally multiple emission peaks at different wavelengths, it is important to reveal if UCNP-generated visible light induces similar structural changes of microbial rhodopsins as conventional visible light illumination does. Here, we synthesize the lanthanide-doped UCNPs that convert NIR light to blue light. Using these NIR-to-blue UCNPs, we monitor the NIR-triggered conformational changes in sensory rhodopsin II from Natronomonas pharaonis (NpSRII), blue light-sensitive microbial rhodospsin, by FTIR spectroscopy. FTIR difference spectrum of NpSRII was recorded under two different excitation conditions: (ⅰ) with conventional blue light, (ⅱ) with UCNP-generated blue light upon NIR excitation. Both spectra display similar spectral features characteristic of the long-lived M photointermediate state during the photocycle of NpSRII. This study demonstrates that NIR-activation of NpSRII mediated by UCNPs takes place in a similar way to direct blue light activation of NpSRII.

Novel superhydrophobic NIR reflective coatings based on Montmorillonite/SiO2 composites for Energy-saving building

Qiang Gao,Xiaomei Wu,Fangya Shi

In recent years, cool building materials have received increasing attentions due to their superior energy-saving efficiencies. In this work, novel self-cleaning cool coatings based on fluorocarbon resin-montmorillonite (MMT)/SiO 2 composites were prepared for energy-saving buildings. The intercalation modification of MMT improved the dispersion stability of MMT in organic solvent. Surface modification of MMT and SiO 2 particles by fluoroalkyl silane (FAS) produced hydrophobic particles. Fluorocarbon resin was used as a binder. With the assistance of the micro/nano structure of montmorillonite/SiO 2 composites and low surface energy of FAS and fluorocarbon resin, superhydrophobic state of the MMT/SiO 2 composite coatings can be achieved. The maximum contact angle of the MMT/SiO 2 composite coatings was as high as 163.5°. The superhydrophobic composite coatings exhibited superior self-cleaning property and good mechanical durability. Furthermore, the NIR solar reflectance of the superhydrophobic montmorillonite/SiO 2 composite coatings ranged from 0.77 to 0.85. The composite coatings reduced the heat box’s inside temperature of by 5.9℃. Therefore, the integration of high NIR reflectance property and superior self-cleaning property makes montmorillonite/SiO 2 composite coatings good candidates as self-cleaning cool roof coatings for energy-saving buildings.

Thermal and NIR controlled flexible switching devices using a smart conductive composite hydrogel approach

Yanqin Wang,Jingwen Liao,Xiaogang Wu,Fengbo Zhu,Yang Liu,Yi-Xian Qin,Weiyi Chen,Qiang Zheng

Flexible switching devices with multi-stimulus responsive abilities have shown promising applications as smart materials in the tissue regeneration fields. Herein, a composite hydrogel-based flexible switch system was successfully designed by integrating the nano-sized conductive CNC@PPy (cellulose nanocrystal decorated with polypyrrole (PPy)) and CNC@PDA (cellulose nanocrystal decorated with polydopamine (PDA)) composite particles into the thermal sensitive poly N-isopropyl acrylamide (PNIPAM) hydrogels. The resulting composite hydrogels exhibited enhanced elastic modulus (∼29.5 kPa), superior conductivity (∼1.1 S/m), self-healing, and thermo- and NIR-responsive abilities. Particularly, the incorporated CNC@PDA and CNC@PPy particles within the hydrogel matrix by hydrogen bonds could not only provide a more continuous transporting path for electrons, but also further improve the photothermal conversion efficiency of the composite hydrogel system, in which the temperature increased by 47.6 °C within 10 min under NIR irradiation, and high NIR light-responsive sensitivity with a volume change of 30% within 2 min. Moreover, these composite hydrogels were developed to serve thermo- and NIR light-responsive switchers effectively, which showed excellent stimulus-responsive sensitivities. In all, this work provided a new strategy for designing the multi-stimulus responsive smart hydrogels, which demonstrated excellent potential to serve as remotely controllable switch devices in biomaterials and tissue regeneration.

Reasonable design of NIR AIEgens for fluorescence imaging and effective photothermal/photodynamic cancer therapy

Hongsen Wang,Yu Wang,Zhaohui Zheng,Fang Yang,Xiaobin Ding,Aiguo Wu

The development of a multifunctional single molecule phototherapeutic agent with excellent fluorescence imaging, photothermal therapy and photodynamic therapy at the same time is still a challenging task, which mainly arises from the low absorbance of the molecule, and the complexity of energy dissipation and molecular design. Herein, four donor–acceptor (D–A) compounds were synthesized by linking triphenylamine (TPA), thiophene/thieno[3,2-b]thiophene and different cyano acceptor structures. In this design, we propose a molecular design strategy to redshift absorption and increase the molar extinction coefficient (ε) by enhancing electron-withdrawing acceptors and enlarging the π-conjugation plane unit. Due to the twisted structure of TPA, these compounds exhibit aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics. Notably, these AIEgens have long emission wavelengths, excellent photostability, biocompatibility, photothermal stability and singlet oxygen (1O2) generation performance. Among them, the photothermal conversion efficiency of a compound (named TCF-SS-TPA NPs) can reach 84.5%. Cellular internalization and therapy showed that TCF-SS-TPA NPs have good biocompatibility, excellent cell bioimaging and cancer phototherapy capabilities in vitro. This study will stimulate the molecular design of multifunctional phototherapeutics to realize effective synergistic cancer therapy.
