In this work, we have developed a green method for the preparation of para-nitrotoluene through the catalytic nitration of toluene with nitrogen dioxide (NO2) under the promotion of dioxygen (O2). The experimental results reveal that the dealumination of Hβ zeolite has a significant effect on the catalysis of the developed NO2–O2–acetic anhydride (Ac2O) system, in which the conversion of toluene is 78.1% and the selectivity to para-nitrotoluene is 71.8%. Furthermore, the nature of different dealuminated catalysts was investigated by nitrogen adsorption–desorption analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), inductively coupled plasma (ICP), ammonia temperature-programmed desorption (NH3-TPD), pyridine adsorbed Fourier-transform infrared (Py-FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and 27Al magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (27Al MAS NMR) techniques. The results of characterization indicate that the structure of the Hβ zeolite still remains and that of Al species in the extra-framework is preferentially removed after acid treatment. Based on the combined results of catalytic characterization and DFT calculation, a feasible reaction mechanism of improved para-selectivity in toluene nitration was suggested for the NO2–O2–Ac2O system.

The development of high-performance and low-operating-temperature gas sensors is critical for real-time environmental and industrial process monitoring applications. In this study, we report the synthesis and application of a bismuth-based metal–organic framework (Bi-MOF)-derived Bi2Se3 sensor for the detection of NO2 at room temperature. Bi2Se3 was synthesized through a controlled selenization process that resulted in synergistic effects between Bi-MOF and Bi2Se3. The changes in morphology and surface physicochemical properties caused by the selenization process led to the tunability of the NO2 gas sensing properties. The Bi-MOF-derived Bi2Se3 sensitive materials were characterized using XRD, SEM, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance, and BET to analyze their morphology, composition, pore structures, intensity of Se vacancies, and surface properties. The gas sensing performances were assessed under various NO2 concentrations, evaluating the sensitivity, selectivity, and resistance to humidity. Our findings show that the Bi2Se3 sensor exhibits excellent sensitivity and selectivity toward NO2 at room temperature. The best sensor showed a response of 32.1% toward 0.5 ppm of NO2 with a response/recovery time of 60.1/365.4 s, making it a promising candidate for NO2 monitoring. This study provides significant insights into the potential of Bi-MOF-derived Bi2Se3 materials in gas sensing, laying the groundwork for further research to optimize these sensors for practical applications.

Nitrogen oxide (NO 2 ) is common by-products of industrial production, posing significant health risks to workers. Therefore, real-time monitoring of NO 2 is crucial. In this study, innovative In 2 O 3 -ZnO nano-materials were prepared by combining In 2 O 3 with ZIF-8 via electrospinning, for detecting trace amounts of NO 2 at room temperature (RT). Compared to pure In 2 O 3 , the In 2 O 3 -ZnO nano-materials (V2) with a 10 % weight ratio of ZIF-8 exhibited a significantly higher response (389.99) and a faster response time (16.9 s) to NO 2 under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation at RT. The superior gas sensing performance of the V2 nano-materials is attributed to the formation of n-n heterojunctions, enhanced optical absorption, increased oxygen vacancy ratio, and excellent dispersion among the nano-materials. The results demonstrate that V2 nano-materials can detect NO 2 at parts-per-billion (ppb) levels at RT, making them suitable for monitoring trace amounts of NO 2 in open environments. Furthermore, a portable real-time NO 2 monitoring device was constructed using V2 as the sensing material, an LM358-based amplifier circuit for data acquisition, an STM32F103C8T6 microcontroller as the main control unit, and a buzzer as an alarm device. Compared to devices using a helical Ni-Cr wire as an indirect heat source, this integrated NO 2 detection device offers real-time alarms with lower energy consumption. This application not only enhances worker health and safety in industrial environments but also demonstrates higher energy efficiency in practical application.

Highly-sensitive NO 2 gas sensors based on metal oxide semiconductors (MOS) are promising but often limited by poor sensing-recovery characteristics and high operating temperatures. Herein, we address these challenges by combining Zn doping modification with mild visible light activation, effectively tuning the electronic and chemical properties of MIL-68(In)-derived In 2 O 3 nanotubes (NTs), providing an advanced approach to realize rapid recovery towards sub-ppm NO 2 at room temperature (RT). The optimized 5 at% Zn-doped In 2 O 3 (Zn x In 2-x O 3 (x = 0.10)) NTs achieves an exceptional response of 15,257 toward 10 ppm NO 2 under dark condition and a rapid 4 s recovery under visible light irradiation at RT. Additionally, the sensor exhibits superior NO 2 selectivity, excellent reproducibility and long-term stability over 36 days. The enhanced sensing performance is driven by the mesoporous frameworks which enhance free electrons transfer in the modulated energy-level structure and introduce abundant photo-induced holes via visible light irradiation at the sensing-recovery stage. This work offers new insights into surface chemistry modulation in MOS nanomaterials, advancing the development of cost-effective and low-energy-consumption room-temperature NO 2 sensors.

Transition metal carbides/nitrides (MXenes) have shown great potential in room temperature (RT) gas sensors, but the self-stacking of MXene sheets limits their sensitivity and response/recovery speed. In addition, the poor selectivity of MXenes sensors caused by the conventional single sensing mechanism remains a challenge. Herein, a synergistic effect of charge transfer and interlayer swelling is proposed to comprehensively improve the gas sensing performance of the MXenes toward oxidizing NO 2 . To this end, a resistive gas sensor is prepared by combining the accordion-like V 2 CT x MXene and n-type SnS 2 nanoplates . The results reveal that the NO 2 sensitivity of the V 2 CT x /SnS 2 sensor is enhanced by 581.6 times compared to the pristine V 2 CT x sensor, while achieving ultrafast response and recovery speeds (4.8/4.7 s) at 25 °C under 51.9 % relative humidity. Furthermore, the V 2 CT x /SnS 2 sensor exhibits excellent selectivity (response ratio > 5) to NO 2 . The outstanding gas sensing performances can be attributed to the synergistic sensing of charge transfer and interlayer swelling, unique structure and more active sites. This work expands the gas sensing application of the V 2 CT x MXene and promotes the in-depth combination of multiple sensing mechanisms, opening an effective avenue for developing high-performance RT NO 2 sensors.

Constructing heterostructures is an effective strategy to improve the performance of semiconductor metal oxide . The heterostructure exhibits strong interaction between tightly packed interfaces, showing better performance than a single structure. Therefore, indium sulfide (In 2 S 3 )/tungsten oxide (WO 3 ) composites were synthesized with heterojunction by a simple hydrothermal method to enhance the gas sensing performance of WO 3 . The WO 3 and In 2 S 3 exist in the form of nanoparticles . Then the gas sensing test of the material was carried out, by exploring the performance of WO 3 based on doping different amounts of In 2 S 3 , the response of WO 3 based on 3 wt% In 2 S 3 to 10 parts per million (ppm) nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) is 170.1 at the optimum operating temperature of 170 °C. Compared with pure WO 3 , the response is enhanced by seven times. Besides, the detection limit of the sample is low. The minimum detection concentration of NO 2 can reach 20 parts per billion (ppb). The reason for the improved performance can be attributed to the wider electron depletion layer or hole accumulation layer formed by the heterojunction for electron transfer . Finally, a convenient wearable NO 2 Real-time Detection System is designed to detect different concentrations of NO 2 in the factory, which provides an effective alarm mean for the excessive emission of industrial waste gas in the factory environment.

Metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) gas sensor is an effective tool for NO 2 detection. In this work, a NO 2 sensor based on MXene-OH/ZnMnO was fabricated via a seed layer induced self-assembly method, exhibiting remarkable gas response value(280) to 100 ppm NO 2 under 25℃ and ultraviolet activation. Besides, the prepared sensor presents ultra-fast response and recovery speeds (8/40 s), low detection limit (250 ppb), and high selectivity. The enhanced sensing performance was explained by the first-principles calculations, showing that the increased electrical conductivity, more electron transfer numbers and higher adsorption energy promotes effective transport of charge carriers on the surface of sensing materials and NO 2 gas molecules.

To date, development of high-performance, stretchable gas sensors operating at and below room temperature (RT) remains a challenge in terms of traditional sensing materials. Herein, we report on a high-performance NO 2 gas sensor based on a self-healable, recyclable, ultrastretchable, and stable polyvinyl alcohol–cellulose nanofibril double-network organohydrogel, which features ultrahigh sensitivity (372%/ppm), low limit of detection (2.23 ppb), relatively fast response and recovery time (41/144 s for 250 ppb NO 2 ), good selectivity against interfering gases (NH 3 , CO 2 , ethanol, and acetone), excellent reversibility, repeatability, and long-term stability at RT or even at −20°C. In particular, this sensor shows outstanding stability against large deformations and mechanical damages so that it works normally after rapid self-healing or remolding after undergoing mechanical damage without significant performance degradation, which has major advantages compared to state-of-the-art gas sensors. The high NO 2 sensitivity and selectivity are attributed to the selective redox reactions at the three-phase interface of gas, gel, and electrode, which is even boosted by applying tensile strain. With a specific electrical circuit design, a wireless NO 2 alarm system based on this sensor is created to enable continuous, real-time, and wireless NO 2 detection to avoid the risk of exposure to NO 2 higher than threshold concentrations.

Nitric oxide (NO) is a short-lived intermediate of the oceanic nitrogen cycle, and it is produced by biological and photochemical processes in the ocean. Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is a reactive atmospheric compound which has not been determined in the ocean so far. Here, we present the setup and validation of a novel continuous underway measurement system to measure dissolved NO and NO2 in the surface ocean. The system consists of a seawater/gas equilibration component coupled to a chemiluminescence detector. It was successfully deployed during a 12 day cruise to the East China Sea in May 2018. Dissolved NO and NO2 surface concentrations ranged from

Development of an efficient synergistic degradation technology to prevent the emission of chlorinated organics and NO x from industrial sources without forming harmful by–products, is a major challenge in environmental chemistry. The designed multi–active center catalyst (PdV/TiO 2 ) showed excellent CB/NO synergistic removal conversion efficiency and target product selectivity. Experimental and DFT calculation results indicated that Pd was the common center for adsorption of CB, O 2 , NH 3 and NO x molecules. The O vacancies (VO x –1 and TiO x –1 ) generated during the CB ring opening process was conducive to adsorption of reaction gas molecules, accelerating CBCO and NH 3 –SCR reaction. The adsorbed NH 3 species would dissociate H protons to provide Brønsted acidic sites necessary for Cl conversion. O vacancies structure was easier to be restored by reoxidation with the participation of NO 2 . Certain synergistic effect in the removal of CB and NO on the multi–active center catalyst surface was found.

A newly constructed thermal dissociation cavity ring-down spectrometer (TD-CRDS) for the simultaneous measurement of ambient total peroxy nitrates (ΣPNs, RO 2 NO 2 ), total alkyl nitrates (ΣANs, RONO 2 ), and NO 2 was presented in this work. ΣPNs and ΣANs were detected as NO 2 with the CRDS instrument after thermal dissociation. PNs and ANs completely dissociated at 180 °C and 360 °C, with conversion efficiencies of 96 % and 99 %, respectively. The effects of NO 2 and NO on measurement in different temperatures and two types of thermal dissociation inlet (TDI) were further explored. The influence of ambient NO 2 and NO on PNs and ANs in the improved TDI (TDI-2) was significantly improved. To further enhance the measurement accuracy, the consistency of the observed NO 2 in the three channels was tested, which achieved good agreement. The detection limits of the TD-CRDS instrument for NO 2 , ΣPNs, and ΣANs were determined as 6.5, 6.8, and 8.6 pptv (10 s, 1σ), respectively. Observations of PNs and ANs were conducted in a suburban site in Hefei, China, from September 2–30, 2021, using the TD-CRDS instrument, and the consecutive time series of PNs and ANs were derived, verifying the capability of the TD-CRDS instrument for continuous field observations of ΣPNs and ΣANs.

The two-dimensional (2D) g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets have been widely recognized for their great potential in gas sensing. However, the disadvantages brought by layer stacking of two-dimensional nanosheets also seriously affect their performance and application. In this paper, three-dimensional hydrangea-like Pd-ZIF-67/g-C 3 N 4 was prepared for the detection of nitrogen dioxide gas at room temperature via a simple hydrothermal method . The Pd-ZIF-67/g-C 3 N 4 gas sensor exhibited excellent sensing properties with highest sensing response (23.8–100 ppm), ultrafast response speed (0.5 s) and lowest limit of detection (10 ppb) at room temperature. Moreover, it also manifests excellent reversibility and durability, optimal stability and commendable selectivity towards NO 2 gas. This excellent performance is due to the three-dimensional spatial configuration, synergistic effect and catalytic action of Pd . In general, the constructed structure and the proposed design strategy have a certain promoting role in promoting the creation of high performance gas sensors with three-dimensional heterogeneous structures based on two-dimensional nanosheets .
