Developing electrocatalysts based on transition-metal carbides that can be utilized for commercial water splitting is a challenging endeavor. To address this challenge, we employed a novel approach that merged phase-inversion tape-casting and sintering, subsequently implementing a simple and efficient electrodeposition process, to synthesize Ni-activated and Ni–P-activated titanium carbide (Ni/TiC, Ni–P/TiC) ceramic electrodes as water splitting catalytic cathodes and anodes. These self-supported Ni/TiC and Ni–P/TiC electrodes are binder-free with abundant finger-like pores, which contribute to the formation of highly conductive skeleton and more exposed active sites for direct water splitting. These catalysts exhibit outstanding performance, superior to many reported bifunctional nickel-based catalysts supported on other substrates. Moreover, the exceptional electrocatalytic performance of the Ni/TiC and Ni–P/TiC catalysts is attributed to the synergistic effect between Ni oxides (phosphides) and TiC, as revealed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This self-template strategy paves the way for fabricating industrially applicable electrodes to generate hydrogen and oxygen through water splitting.

Low-cost and highly efficient electrocatalysts are highly desirable to improve the efficiency of water splitting for oxygen evolution. In this work, a self-supported ternary Ni–Fe–Sn film on three dimensional nickel foam, which is prepared through a simple electrodeposition method, is investigated as oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalyst. The Ni–Fe–Sn film displays a considerably low overpotential of 253 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 and a small Tafel slope of 61.5 mV dec −1 and excellent long-term stability for OER in 30% KOH aqueous solution. The good OER performance of Ni–Fe–Sn film may originate from its high electrochemical active surface area, rapid electron/proton and mass transfers, and the close combination between Ni–Fe–Sn film and nickel foam. This work provides a guideline to develop the low-cost and efficient earth-abundant OER anodes.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are widely recognized as precursors or sacrificial templates for the synthesis of target catalysts on account of their high porosity and high active surface area . Elemental doping strategy is considered as an effective method for the synthesis of efficient and stable catalysts for electrolytic water. Therefore, in this paper, Ce-doped Ni(OH) 2 nanoparticles and Ni-MOF nanosheets composites were synthesized by electrodeposition using Ni-MOF as precursor. Catalyst Ce–Ni(OH) 2 @Ni-MOF/NF displays excellent OER performance, requiring only 193 mV and 279 mV overpotentials to realize current densities of 10 mA cm −2 and 100 mA cm −2 , respectively, while the UOR performance was very remarkable, only a potential of 1.28 V was demanded to reach a current density of 10 mA cm −2 . In addition, no obvious change in the overpotential was noticed during the stability test of 16 h, indicating good stability of Ce–Ni(OH) 2 @Ni-MOF/NF. This study provides a meaningful reference for the design of an efficient and stable environmental friendly electrocatalyst .

Exploring highly active, low-cost electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of great significance but still a major challenge. Here, we synthesized Ni(OH)2@Ni(Fe)OOH with a sea urchin structure on nickel foam via a simple hydrothermal and subsequent soaking process. Experimental results indicate that incorporation of Fe into Ni(OH)2 is favorable for modulate the electronic structure, faster electron transfer and improved intrinsic activity, thereby leading to excellent OER activity. The optimized Ni(OH)2@Ni(Fe)OOH exhibits superior OER activity with overpotentials of 245 and 310 mV at 10 and 100 mA cm-2, respectively, and a small Tafel slope of 40.7 mV dec-1, and along with high stability over 100 h, which is more active than benchmark RuO2 and sever control samples without introduction of Fe. More importantly, the overall water splitting system by using Ni(OH)2@Ni(Fe)OOH-100 as anode and Pt/C as the cathode only requires a cell voltage of 1.54 V to afford 10 mA cm-2. This work not only demonstrate the key factor of Fe doping, but also offers a new path for the development of NiFe-based OER catalysts.

Graphical The key role of Ni valence state on the catalytic SMR performance of Ni/Al 2 O 3 is reported. Ni 0 /Ni 2+ ratio on Ni/Al 2 O 3 is individually regulated by changing the reduction temperature while maintaining the states of nickel particles and support. A deep understanding is gained on how the Ni valence state of Ni/Al 2 O 3 affects the catalytic SMR performance. Steam methane reforming (SMR) is the most mature technology for hydrogen production in industry, and alumina supported nickel (Ni/Al 2 O 3 ) is the most widely used catalyst. Herein, the key role of Ni valence state on the catalytic SMR performance of Ni/Al 2 O 3 is reported. The ratio of Ni 0 /Ni 2+ on Ni/Al 2 O 3 is individually and effectively tuned by changing the reduction temperature after wet impregnation. Catalytic performance of Ni/Al 2 O 3 is greatly dependent on the surface concentration of Ni 0 and Ni 2+ . The catalyst reduced at 675 °C possesses balanced Ni 0 and Ni 2+ sites and exhibits superior catalytic performance, on which 60 % of methane is stably converted at 600 °C. CH 4 -TPD and CO-TPD profiles demonstrate that appropriate Ni 0 /Ni 2+ ratio can promote the adsorption of CH 4 and inhibit the moderate-strength adsorption of CO, which leads to increased SMR activity and selectivity.

In this study, the bimetallic Ni-Zr MOF-derived nickel-zirconium oxide (Ni-Zr-O)-impregnated silicotungstic acid (HSiW) nanocomposite catalyst (HSiW@Ni-Zr-O) was prepared via a hydrothermal procedure followed by a pyrolysis treatment, and its structural, morphological, and surface components and oxidation states were characterized by using XRD, FTIR, TPD-NH3, SEM, TEM, N2physisorption, and XPS analyses. Then, the nanocomposite catalysts were successfully applied to the esterification of oleic acid (OA) with methanol. According to its characteristics, the obtained HSiW@Ni-Zr-O-1 catalyst would generate larger pores, a higher acidity, and active interfaces at the calcining temperature of 300 °C. Therefore, HSiW@Ni-Zr-O-1 exhibits an excellent catalytic activity of 95.2% under optimal reaction conditions. Additionally, the catalyst can be reused with a good catalytic activity after nine cycles. This study highlights the opportunity of using bimetallic MOFs as precursors to the synthesis of highly nanoporous metal oxide, which supports the larger-industrial scale production of biofuels. Keywords:silicotungstic acid;MOF;nickel-zirconium oxide;esterification;biofuels;catalysis

Methane (CH 4 ), with abundant reserves and mature infrastructure, is an attractive fuel for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). In this work, the effects of Ni doping on the electrochemical performance of Pr 0.5 Sr 0.5 Ti 0.5 Mn 0.5 O 3 (PSTM)-based anodes were investigated using Pr 0.5 Sr 0.5 Ti 0.5 Mn 0.4 Ni 0.1 O 3 (PSTMN41) and Pr 0.5 Sr 0.5 Ti 0.5 Mn 0.5 Ni 0.1 O 3 (PSTMN51). Ni incorporation and subsequent H 2 reduction generated highly dispersed Ni nanoparticles and abundant oxygen vacancies, enhancing electron transport and methane conversion. PSTMN41 exhibited superior catalytic activity and stability compared to PSTMN51 in humidified CH 4 . The PSTMN41-based cells achieved peak power densities of 119.6 and 60.7 mW·cm − 2 under H 2 and humidified CH 4 at 850°C, with polarization resistances of 1.7 and 2.44 Ω·cm 2 . Moreover, PSTMN41 maintained excellent stability over 120 h continuous operation in humidified CH 4 . These results demonstrate that PSTMN41, featuring Ni nanoparticles and high oxygen vacancy concentration, is a promising anode material for SOFCs.

A unique “Ce→W→Ni” electronic conjugation channel is constructed. • Theoretical calculations confirm an optimized electronic structure and the d -band center. • In situ Raman results reveal the formation of the “H-down” configuration. • The as-prepared Ce-Fe(Ni)WO 4 /NF exhibits an outstanding HER activity. Orbital hybridization between metal compounds can modulate the electronic structure and d -band center of catalysts to optimize the adsorption energy barriers of reaction intermediates, consequently efficiently regulating catalytic performance. Herein, a Ce and Ni co-doped iron tungstate nanosheet on nickel foam (Ce-Fe(Ni)WO 4 /NF) is rationally designed as an efficient electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In situ Raman results reveal that the evolution of interfacial water promotes the formation of the “H-down” configuration to expedite the Volmer process for proton generation at the interface. Theoretical calculations confirm that the Ce/Ni co-doping effectively optimizes the electronic structure and the d -band center. Specifically, a unique “Ce→W→Ni” electronic conjugation channel is constructed to regulate the spin state of Ni, and Ni and Ce act as the dual catalytically active sites for favorable intermediate adsorption (Ce for water/hydroxy adsorption and Ni for hydrogen adsorption), thereby lowering the kinetic barrier of HER. Thus, the as-prepared Ce-Fe(Ni)WO 4 /NF exhibits an outstanding HER activity with a low overpotential of 63 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and stable operation for 120 h at 250 mA cm −2 . Moreover, Ce-Fe(Ni)WO 4 /NF also possesses bifunctional catalytic activity for the urea oxidation reaction (UOR), offering a promising route toward low-energy-consumption hydrogen production. This work provides new insights and a theoretical basis for designing high-performance alkaline HER electrocatalysts via multi-element electronic conjugation. Supported Ni catalysts on three mesoporous SiO2 supports (i.e., SBA-15, MCM-41, and HMS) were prepared using a solid-state reaction between Ni(NO3)2 and organic template-occluded mesoporous SiO2. For comparison, supported Ni catalysts on mesoporous SiO2 synthesized by the conventional impregnation method were also included. The catalysts were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, N2 adsorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, H2 temperature-programmed reduction, transmission electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy–energy-dispersive X-ray. The catalytic properties of the catalysts were evaluated using gas-phase catalytic hydrodechlorination of 1,2-dichloroethane. The results showed that upon grinding Ni(NO3)2 with template-occluded mesoporous SiO2, strong coordination between Ni2+ and dodecylamine was identified in the Ni(NO3)2–HMS system. Additionally, the results of H2 temperature-programmed reduction revealed that NiO in calcined NiO/HMS was reduced at higher temperature than those in calcined NiO/SBA-15 and NiO/MCM-41, reflecting the presence of a strong interaction between NiO and mesoporous SiO2 in NiO/HMS. Consistently, the average particle sizes of metallic Ni were found to be 2.7, 3.4, and 9.6 nm in H2-reduced Ni/HMS, Ni/SBA-15, and Ni/MCM-41, respectively, indicative of a much higher Ni dispersion in Ni/HMS. For the catalytic hydrodechlorination of 1,2-dichloroethane, Ni/MCM-41 synthesized by the solid-state reaction method exhibited a catalytic activity similar to that prepared by the impregnation method, while higher catalytic activities were observed on Ni/HMS and Ni/SBA-15 than on their counterparts prepared by the impregnation method. Furthermore, a higher conversion was identified on Ni/HMS than on Ni/SBA-15 and Ni/MCM-41, highlighting the importance of template type for the preparation of highly dispersed metal catalysts on mesoporous SiO2.

Honeycomb-like Ni(OH)2/Ni3S2/Ni foam (NF) was fabricated via a two-step hydrothermal process and subsequent alkalization. Ni3S2with a honeycombed structure was in-situ synthesized on the NF surface by a hydrothermal process. MOF-derived Ni(OH)2nanosheets were then successfully grown on the Ni3S2/NF surface by a second hydrothermal process and alkaline treatment, and a large number of nanosheets were interconnected to form a typical honeycomb-like structure with a large specific surface area and porosity. As a binder-free electrode, the prepared honeycomb-like Ni(OH)2/Ni3S2/NF exhibited a high specific capacitance (2207 F·g−1at 1 A·g−1, 1929.7 F·g−1at 5 mV·s−1) and a remarkable rate capability and cycling stability, with 62.3% of the initial value (1 A·g−1) retained at 10 A·g−1and 90.4% of the initial value (first circle at 50 mV·s−1) retained after 5000 cycles. A hybrid supercapacitor (HSC) was assembled with Ni(OH)2/Ni3S2/NF as the positive electrode and activated carbon (AC) as the negative electrode and exhibited an outstanding energy density of 24.5 Wh·kg−1at the power density of 375 W·kg−1. These encouraging results render the electrode a potential candidate for energy storage.Keywords:Ni(OH)2/Ni3S2/NF;honeycomb-like structure;two-step hydrothermal;alkalization;MOF-derived Ni(OH)2;supercapacitor

Efficient, stable, and environmentally friendly electrocatalysts urgently need to be explored for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). A novel and facile nickel–selenium–dysprosium (Ni–Se–Dy) electrocatalyst was synthesized on Ni foam via simple and feasible one–step galvanostatic electrodeposition . The prepared Ni–Se–Dy electrodes showed excellent HER activity in alkaline medium with low overpotential values of 72 and 173 mV to deliver the current density values of 10 and 50 mA·cm −2 . Tafel slope value (119.72 mV·dec −1 ) for Ni–Se–Dy electrode in 1.0 M KOH indicated that the Ni–Se–Dy catalyst followed a Volmer–Heyrovsky mechanism, and the rate–determining step of this reaction was a Volmer step. Electrochemical test and scanning electron microscopy results showed that the excellent HER performance of Ni–Se–Dy electrode can be attributed to surface morphology , better intrinsic activity, and high conductivity.

The development of extremely active bifunctional non-noble electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is pivotal for water splitting but remains challenging. Herein, self-supported Ni–Fe–Sn electrocatalysts were fabricated on nickel foam (NF) through a simple and facile pulse electrodeposition process. Under optimal conditions, the prepared Ni–Fe–Sn electrocatalysts exhibited excellent bifunctional properties in alkaline medium and required ultralow overpotentials of only 27 and 201 mV for HER and OER, respectively, to reach the current density of 10 mA cm −2 . Importantly, the same Ni–Fe–Sn electrocatalyst can be assembled as the anode and the cathode in a two-electrode system. It demanded a fairly low applied voltage of 1.55, 1.72, and 1.87 V to produce 10, 50, and 100 mA cm −2 , respectively, and exhibited excellent long-term stability. The excellent electrocatalytic water splitting performance of the Ni–Fe–Sn film was mainly associated with its intrinsic catalytic activity derived from the modulation of the electronic structures among Ni, Fe, and Sn by using the appropriate atomic ratio of Ni: Fe: Sn.
