Enhanced methane combustion performance over NiAl2O4-interface-promoted Pd/γ-Al2O3

Xuelin Zou,Zebao Rui,Shiqi Song,Hongbing Ji

Poor durability and low Pd utilization efficiency are the main drawbacks of supported Pd catalysts for low-temperature methane combustion. Here, we present a facile way to stabilize the performance of Pd/Al 2 O 3 by introducing a spinel NiAl 2 O 4 interface as a promoter at no cost to the activity. The NiAl 2 O 4 interface is formed by impregnation of alumina supports in the nickel-containing solution, followed by high-temperature calcination. A series of 0.4   wt.% Pd/ x NiO/γ-Al 2 O 3 with NiO loading varying among 0.0, 0.5, 1.0, and 9.0   wt.% is investigated. The formation of a NiAl 2 O 4 interface promotes the distribution and crystallization of PdO, suppresses PdO particles aggregation and surface OH − species accumulation during the reaction, and finally leads to the excellent performance of Pd/0.5NiO/γ-Al 2 O 3 . Pd/0.5NiO/γ-Al 2 O 3 demonstrates higher Pd utilization efficiency than the state-of-the-art Pd-based catalysts and better stability than Pd/Al 2 O 3 . Such a spinel interface promotion strategy may bring new insight into the design of highly efficient Pd-based catalysts and their potential technological applications.

Amyloid fibril-supported Pd nanoparticles as electrocatalyst for hydrogen peroxide reduction

Kong Li-Xia,Wang Lan-Jie,Su Lan-Lan,Zhao Zhi-Jie,Yan Zhong-Dan,Zhang Gong-Jun,Zhou Xing-Fei

Palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs) were fabricated by using insulin amyloid fibrils (INSAFs) as biotemplates. Atomic force microscopy measurements showed that ultra-small Pd NPs were well adsorbed and dispersed on surfaces of INSAFs. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed the partial reduction of Pd ion into metallic Pd(0) probably due to the presence of Cys groups on surface of the insulin fibrils. The electrochemical performance of Pd/INSAFs to reduction of H 2 O 2 was further evaluated by cyclic voltammetry. The remarkably high electrocatalytic activity, low detection limitation and excellent stability make the Pd/INSAFs a promising bio-nanoelectrocatalyst.

Controllable synthesis of Pd@ZIF-L catalysts by an assembly method

Hong Jiang,Songlin Xue,Yefei Liu,Rizhi Chen,Weihong Xing

The Pd@ZIF-L catalysts with uniform crosshair-star shape and a size of about 20 μm were fabricated by an assembly method that enables the crystallization of ZIF-L in water with the presence of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-stabilized Pd nanoparticles (NPs). The physical and catalytic properties of the Pd@ZIF-L catalysts are greatly affected by the molar ratios of 2-methylimidazole (2-MeIM)/Zn2+ and PVP/Zn2+. Their catalytic activities were evaluated by the catalytic reduction of p-nitrophenol to p-aminophenol. The results indicate that a lower molar ratio of 2-MeIM/Zn2+ is beneficial for the increase of Pd loading and p-nitrophenol conversion, but a suitable molar ratio (≥20) of 2-MeIM/Zn2+ is helpful to the crystallization of ZIF-L and the encapsulation of the Pd NPs within the ZIF-L framework. The Pd@ZIF-L catalyst synthesized at a lower PVP/Zn2+ molar ratio has higher Pd loading and p-nitrophenol conversion due to the easy adsorption of PVP–Pd NPs onto the ZIF-L surfaces. This work would aid the development of high-performance Pd@ZIF-L catalysts.

Enhanced catalytic reduction of N-nitrosodimethylamine over bimetallic Pd-Ni catalysts

Huan Chen,Ting Li,Fang Jiang,Zhe Wang

Catalytic reduction of N -nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) was investigated over γ-Al 2 O 3 supported bimetallic Pd-Ni catalysts (3%(Pd x Ni 1−x )). NDMA could be reduced to dimethylamine over 3%(Pd 0.8 Ni 0.2 ) with a metal-loading-normalized pseudo-first-order rate constant of 836   ±   21   L   g me −1   h −1 . Characterization results showed that the reducibility of PdO (or NiO) was improved by addition of Ni (or Pd) in 3%(Pd x Ni 1−x ); Pd-Ni ensembles were formed in 3%(Pd x Ni 1−x ) and there was an electronic transfer from Pd to Ni; metal dispersion was affected by the formation of Pd-Ni ensembles and a volcano curve of metal dispersion via Pd/Ni ratio was observed. The activity profiles demonstrated that TOF had a significant positive relationship with metal dispersion of 3%(Pd x Ni 1−x ), indicating high metal dispersion favor NDMA reduction. NDMA reduction over 3%(Pd 0.8 Ni 0.2 ) catalyst could be described by Langmuir-Hinshelwood model, reflecting an adsorption controlled reduction mechanism. The reduction mechanism of NDMA over 3%(Pd 0.8 Ni 0.2 ) catalyst was proposed to be that H 2 was activated by Pd, and H spillover from Pd to Ni/NiO reduced NDMA though N-N cleavage.

Facile synthesis of Pt–Pd nanodendrites and their superior electrocatalytic activity

Jing-Jing Lv,Jie-Ning Zheng,Shan-Shan Li,Li-Li Chen,Ai-Jun Wang,Jiu-Ju Feng

In this report, well-dispersed porous Pt–Pd nanodendrites (Pt–Pd NDs) were synthesized at high yield by a simple, one-pot, wet chemical method without using any seed, template, or toxic organic solvent. Poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) and urea were employed as the co-stabilizing and co-structure-directing agents. It was found that the reaction temperature, the amount of PVP and urea, the Pt/Pd molar ratio, and the pH value of the reaction media greatly affected the size and shape of the Pt–Pd product. The as-prepared Pt–Pd nanocrystals had a larger active surface area, superior catalytic activity, and better stability for the electrooxidation of methanol and ethylene glycol (EG), compared with the commercial Pt-black and Pd-black catalysts.

Excellent Pd-Loaded Magnetic Nanocatalyst on Multicarboxyl and Boronic Acid Biligands

Haijiao Jia,Mengqi Cheng,Ran Zhao,Pingyi Zheng,Fangfang Ren,Yaqin Nan,Mengting Huang,Youxin Li

An effective palladium nanocatalyst (Fe3O4@SiO2–FPBA–DTPA–Pd) was proposed and prepared, which was immobilized on magnetic silica with ethylenediamine pentaacetic acid and formylphenylboronic acid as biligands. A series of characterizations showed that Fe3O4@SiO2–FPBA–DTPA–Pd was 5–15 nm and contained 1.44 mmol/g Pd2+/Pd0. It was stable below 232.7 °C, and its saturation magnetization value was 21.17 emu/g which was easily recycled by a magnet. Its catalytic ability was evaluated through 7 Suzuki reactions and 15 Heck reactions. Results showed that the yields of 14 reactions catalyzed by Fe3O4@SiO2–FPBA–DTPA–Pd were more than 90%, while were better than those of the other two immobilized Pd catalysts on a single diethyltriamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA) group or boronic acid group. Moreover, Fe3O4@SiO2–FPBA–DTPA–Pd showed good reusability in both Suzuki and Heck reactions. In two model Suzuki and Heck reactions, after seven cycles, its yields were still above 95% without significant loss, which exceeded those of many reported catalysts; therefore, it has great potential in future large-scale industrial production.

Inherent CeO2 Pore Structure Confined Pd for the Catalytic Performance Regulation

Yuanyuan An,Guoxiu Hao,Xinyue Wang,Li Zhou,Mengyao Wu,Jialong Ma,Lien-Yang Chou

In this study, we synthesized CeO2 possessing an open pore structure and verified its structural differences compared to CeO2 lacking such an open pore structure. Using these two CeO2 samples as catalyst supports and loading them with Pd metals, a series of characterizations were carried out on the resultant catalysts to analyze their structures and properties meticulously. We have elucidated the influence of the open pore structure on the loading position of Pd. Hydrogenation reactions involving alkynes and alkenes were employed to confirm the existence of steric hindrance effects caused by the pore structure differences. Furthermore, we applied these catalysts to more valuable industrial reaction systems, demonstrating that the unique pore structures of directly synthesized CeO2 can also exhibit excellent performance in practical applications.

B-modified Pd/ZnAl2O4 Catalyst for Enhancing CO2 Hydrogenation to Methanol

Liu Hang,Liu Sixu,Liang Yaozhen,Sun Yifei,Xiong Haifeng

Palladium (Pd)-based catalysts are widely used for CO 2 hydrogenation reactions due to the capability to activate H 2 , which enhances the overall CO 2 conversion. However, most of the current Pd catalysts reported show high CO 2 conversion only at higher temperature, and the exploration of efficient catalyst enabling low temperature conversion (180–300 °C) is of importance. In this study, a series of Pd-B/ZnAl 2 O 4 catalysts were synthesized via in-situ doping, resulting in the Pd crystal transformation induced from crystal to amorphous. The catalytic hydrogenation activity of the amorphous Pd-B catalyst reaches its zenith at a Pd-B mole ratio of 1:2, accompanied by the superior catalysis stability in CO 2 hydrogenation. Various characterization techniques, including XRD, CO-DRIFTS, H 2 -TPR, XPS and TEM, were used to investigate the properties of the Pd-B/ZnAl 2 O 4 catalyst. The results showed that the Pd-B/ZnAl 2 O 4 catalyst exhibited higher dispersion and better CO 2 conversion efficiency compared to unmodified Pd catalyst. Additionally, the methanol space–time yields are nearly doubled when the B decoration is employed. At 280 °C, CO 2 conversion was improved and methanol selectivity remained at ~ 65%. This study provides valuable insights into the design and optimization of Pd-B based catalysts for CO 2 hydrogenation at low temperatures. Graphical Abstract

Macrophage-associated immune checkpoint CD47 blocking ameliorates endometriosis

Li Jing,Yan Shumin,Li Qiuju,Huang Yufei,Ji Miaomiao,Jiao Xue,Yuan Ming,Wang Guoyun

Peritoneal macrophages play a significant role in the progression of endometriosis (EM), but their functional differentiation is still unclear, and their phagocytic ability is weak. CD47-signal-regulated protein α (SIRPα) and PD-L1-PD-1 are considered immune checkpoints associated with macrophage phagocytosis. A specific blockade of these two pathways had been shown to increase the phagocytic clearance of cancer cells by macrophages in most cancers. We hypothesized that targeting CD47/PD-L1 in EM could improve the phagocytosis of macrophages, thereby delaying the progression of EM. From localization to quantification, from mRNA to protein, we comprehensively evaluated the expression of CD47 and PD-L1 in EM. We demonstrated that the CD47 expression in ectopic endometrium from patients with EM was significantly increased, but PD-L1 was not. We performed direct co-culture experiments of endometrial stromal cells with macrophages in vitro and in vivo to assess whether ectopic endometrial stromal cells escape macrophage phagocytosis through the CD47-SIRPα signaling pathway. The results showed that targeting CD47 increased the phagocytic capacity of macrophages. Interestingly, we also found that the reduction of CD47 expression promoted apoptosis of endometrial stromal cells. In conclusion, these data suggested that targeting CD47 can effectively target ectopic endometrial stromal cells through a dual mechanism of increased phagocytosis of macrophages and induced apoptosis of ectopic endometrial stromal cells. Thus, immunotherapy based on the CD47-SIRPα signaling pathway has some potential in treating EM, but further mechanistic studies are needed to explore more effective and specific antibodies.

Preparation of cordierite monolithic catalyst for α-methylstyrene hydrogenation in a rotating packed bed reactor

Lan Jiang,Guang-Wen Chu,Ya-Zhao Liu,Wei Liu,Li-Xiong Wen,Yong Luo

A rotating packed bed (RPB) reactor with excellent mass transfer performance can be applied for catalytic reactions. However, the structure of catalyst particles randomly inside the rotor of the RPB reactor was easily deformed under the centrifugal field. In this work, a cordierite (COR) monolithic catalyst with high mechanical strength was prepared, aiming to be used in the RPB reactor for hydrogenation. The acid pretreatment and Al 2 O 3 coating were employed to increase the specific surface area of COR substrate. Active component palladium (Pd) was deposited on Al 2 O 3 /COR. Hydrogenation of α-methylstyrene (AMS) was selected as a model reaction for the RPB reactor with the above Pd/Al 2 O 3 /COR. Experimental results show that the space time yield (STY) in the RPB reactor was effectually enhanced 9.2 times higher than that in the fixed bed reactor at the operation conditions of 30 °C and 0.2 MPa, which shows potential prospects of the RPB reactor with Pd/Al 2 O 3 /COR monolithic catalyst for the process intensification of catalytic reaction.

The Improved Cooperation of Metal–Acid Catalysis Using Encapsulation and P Doping Enhances the Preparation of 3-Acetyl-1-Propanol

Zezheng Bing,Yuanyuan Gao,Zhongyi Liu,Qiaoyun Liu

Biomass, as a renewable carbon resource, holds broad application prospects. Among various bio-based platform molecules, furan derivatives play a significant role in green chemical production. Notably, the conversion of 2-methylfuran (2-MF) to 3-acetyl-1-propanol (3-AP) over bifunctional catalysts has attracted considerable interest. In this study, a Pd@PHZSM-5 catalyst was prepared by encapsulating Pd nanoparticles within P-doped HZSM-5 for 2-MF conversion. The encapsulation improved Pd dispersion and metal–acid synergy, enhancing both catalytic activity and 3-AP selectivity. Additionally, phosphorus doping increased HZSM-5 crystallinity, resulting in excellent stability. This work provides a feasible strategy for optimizing metal–acid cooperation, offering theoretical guidance for bifunctional catalysis and biomass valorization.

Eco-friendly preparation of coke-derived CuS-doped carbon for selective electrochemical hydrogenation of furfural

Xia Jiang,Liangli Li,Wenhua Zhang,Junming Xu

Selective electrochemical hydrogenation of furfural (FFL) with high efficiency to produce important platform chemical (furfuryl alcohol) has great economic value and research significance. In this work, a novel and sustainable Pd/CuS@C catalyst derived from waste cooking oil (WCO) was prepared to catalyze the selective electrocatalyst hydrogenation (ECH) of FFL to furfuryl alcohol (FFA) for the first time. As expected, Pd/CuS@C catalyst was only active in C=O ECH to produce FFA in a >99 % selectivity, along with a >99 % conversion of FFL. Selective and stable ECH over time ensured up to six cycles. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicated that synergistic interaction between CuS and Pd(111) exhibited the high adsorption energies of H 2 and FFL. Overall, this research innovatively combined WCO treatment and FFL electrocatalytic upgrading, providing a green and environmentally friendly solution for sustainable energy conversion and electrochemical valorization of biomass derivatives.
