Fabrication of PDMS Composite Membrane With Reduced Graphene Oxide@Silica Core-Shell for Ethanol Separation by Pervaporation

Leyang Deng,Yongqiang Lan,Jingru Lv,Jiaxing Chen,Yanhong Zhang,Ping Peng

This study reports the development of ethanol-selective composite membranes for pervaporation (PV) based on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) embedded with reduced graphene oxide@silica core-shell (GSCS) particles. To enhance interfacial compatibility and particle dispersion within the matrix, 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane (FDTS) was immobilized onto the GSCS to entangle with PDMS chains. A pre-polymerization strategy was adopted to increase the viscosity of the casting suspension, facilitating higher filler loading and improved ethanol separation performance. Optimal separation performance was achieved with a casting solution viscosity of 4 Pa s, yielding a maximum selectivity of 3.94. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) confirmed the formation of smooth defect-free PDMS/FDTS-GSCS composite membranes. The PV testing of these membranes demonstrated a high separation factor of 11.03 and a permeation flux of 242 g m −2 h −1 for separating a 10 wt% ethanol/water mixture at 40°C. Critically, the composite membranes exhibited excellent operational stability over a continuous 168-h test period. These findings indicate that incorporating FDTS-modified GSCS into PDMS significantly enhances ethanol selectivity, highlighting the potential of these membranes for bioethanol recovery applications.

MOF ligand side group regulation enables UiO-66/PDMS mixed-matrix membranes for ester/alcohol azeotropic separation

Doudou Dong,Weiliang Xu,Yuanhang Jin,Huan Yu,Rui Yao,Guining Chen,Yanan Guo,Haipeng Zhu,Gongping Liu,Yanshuo Li,Wanqin Jin

Currently, separation of ester/alcohol azeotropes such as methyl methacrylate (MMA)/methanol is a typical energy-intensive process using distillation technology. In principle, pervaporation membrane technology can separate azeotropes with higher energy efficiency, while the membrane performance could not meet the application requirement. We reported a new type of MOF ligand side group regulated UiO-66/PDMS mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) to selectively separate MMA from the its methanol azeotrope. The incorporation of UiO-66 fillers improved the MMA/methanol performance of PDMS membrane. The results of molecular simulation and characterizations revealed that compared with the pristine UiO-66 and UiO-66-CH 3 , amino groups of UiO-66-NH 2 showed stronger interaction energy and thus higher affinity towards MMA molecule. Therefore, although the pore size of UiO-66-NH 2 is larger than the molecular kinetic diameters of MMA and methanol, the tunable chemical environment and molecular interaction promoted the selective transport of MMA. The optimal UiO-66-NH 2 /PDMS MMM displayed an outstanding separation performance with a total flux of 2.07 kg m −2  h −1 and a separation factor of 5.7 for 18 wt% MMA/methanol azeotrope at 40 °C. The membrane exhibited an excellent long-term performance during continuous separation process of ∼3400 h, and showed potential in scale-up fabrication and separation of other ester/alcohol azeotropes. The proposed MOF ligand side group regulation offers a promising strategy to develop high-performance membranes for azeotropic separation.

Effective daytime radiative cooling via a template method based PDMS sponge emitter with synergistic thermo-optical activity

Yangziwan Weng,Weifeng Zhang,Yi Jiang,Weiyun Zhao,Yuan Deng

Radiative cooling, a passive cooling method without energy consumption, provides a sustainable alternative for existing cooling strategies. Microstructures in porous polymers have enabled further optimization of radiative cooling efficiency through selective reflection and emission. While numerous fabrication strategies have been reported, there is still a critical need for scalable method with simplicity, low cost, and designable microstructures. Herein, we report a low-cost eco-friendly template method towards scalable production of porosity-controlled sponge emitter with high radiative cooling efficiency. We demonstrate the feasibility by preparing porous polydimethylsiloxane sponge emitter (P-PDMS) with NaCl template. By modulating the template-to-PDMS mass ratio, facile porosity control is realized and the obtained sponge-like porous structure endows PDMS with higher sub-ambient cooling ability enabled by enhanced emissivity and solar reflectivity . Furthermore, the heat transfer between hot air and the object is efficiently inhibited by the micropores . Combined theoretical and experimental results demonstrate that the PDMS sponge has a remarkable reflectivity of 95% in solar spectrum and averaged emissivity of 96.5% within the 8–13 μm range, thus realizing excellent sub-ambient temperature drop of 8.0 °C.

Zhuo Chen,Xiaopin Sun,Mengyang Wang,Zhiwei Chen,Wenyi Guo,Xianze Li,Xiaoxu Liu,Lianxin Luo

The increasing prominence of energy shortages and environmental issues has encouraged research on low-carbon, clean, and sustainable energy technologies. In the fields of sensing, motion monitoring, and energy harvesting, self-powered electronic devices are developing rapidly, posing more severe challenges for triboelectric materials. In this study, polyaniline-modified cellulose was prepared via in situ polymerization and combined with biocompatible polydimethylsiloxane to create a triboelectric material with enhanced strength and conductivity. After being treated with 500-mesh sandpaper, the material exhibited the best electrical output performance, with a voltage of 206.8 V, a current of 10.1 μA, and a charge of 50.44 nC. The triboelectric nanogenerator made from this material was integrated with the deinking of old mechanical-pulp waste paper. The deinking effects under different conditions were investigated, and the deinking principle was explored from the perspective of the ink itself.

PDMS/γ-Bi2O3/SiO2 coatings with superior antibacterial properties and mechanical durability based on friction-induced strategy

Wanchun Lin,Yingchun Liu,Jiayuan Yang,Bo-Mei Liu,Wei Liu,Maoping Lyu,Jesse Zhu,Hui Zhang

Recent public health issues and the rise of antimicrobial resistance have driven the demand for durable, self-activating antimicrobial surfaces. Traditional metal oxide coatings often suffer from uncontrolled ion release and limited antibacterial mechanisms, which hinder their long-term effectiveness. In this work, a mechanically robust, friction-activated hydrophobic antibacterial coating is developed by integrating γ-Bi 2 O 3 , polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), and nanoscale hydrophobic SiO 2 . PDMS imparts low surface energy, while SiO 2 reinforces mechanical stability; substrate adhesion is further enhanced via plasma treatment followed by KH570 silane grafting. Microscale tetrahedral γ-Bi 2 O 3 (∼6 μm) with nanoscale tips (∼200 nm) enables a synergistic antibacterial effect through controlled Bi + release and mechanical membrane disruption, while maintaining low cytotoxicity. Upon friction activation, the P 1 B 2 S 0.04 coating exhibited an increase in water contact angle from 113.1 ± 1.7 ° to 145.9 ± 3.7 ° after 1000 abrasion cycles. The antibacterial rates against E. coli reached 99.94 %, 99.67 %, and 99.87 %, and S. aureus values were 97.77 %, 99.08 %, and 99.29 % after 300, 600, and 900 cycles, respectively. Cytotoxicity tests confirmed good biocompatibility, with cell viability exceeding 80 %. These results indicate that the coating maintains sustained antibacterial performance after repeated abrasion, showing strong potential for applications on medical and public surfaces.

A Two-Step Strategy for Aroma Restoration of Strawberry Concentrate Based on ZIF-67@PDMS Composite Membrane

Ziling Teng,Zixuan Ge,Xia Yu,Chunxia Zhou,Suling Guo,Yun Sun,Zhong Yao

An organophilic composite membrane, ZIF-67@PDMS, was fabricated to enhance the isolation of natural aromatic compounds. The as-prepared composite membrane was characterized using SEM, EDS, FTIR, XRD, and contact angle measurement. In comparison to pure PDMS, ZIF-67@PDMS, featuring a loading capacity of 2.5 wt% of PDMS and a membrane thickness of 15 μm, demonstrated markedly improved separation performance for the characteristic aroma compounds of strawberries, namely linalool, benzaldehyde, and ethyl acetate. Under optimal conditions, the permeation fluxes of the three compounds were 628.02 mg∙m−2∙h−1, 294.82 mg∙m−2∙h−1, and 254.14 mg∙m−2∙h−1, along with separation factors of 26.48, 7.94, and 6.32, respectively. ZIF-67@PDMS was then employed to isolate aromatic compounds from freshly squeezed strawberry juice. By backfilling the permeate, both the variety and the content of aromatic compounds in strawberry concentrate were notably restored, and its aroma profile also closely resembled that of fresh strawberry juice.

Dual-Modified PDMS-Based Triboelectric Nanogenerator for Biomechanical Energy Harvesting and Deep Learning–Driven Caloric Consumption Calculation

Zixu He,He Liu,Chenbo Gong,Runyi Han,Zichen Qi,Lin Shi,Zhaohong Song,Fan Wang,Dong Wen,Zhaopeng Xu

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) offer significant potential for mechanical energy harvesting, but their development is constrained by the trade-off between high charge trapping capability and adequate electrical conductivity, which limits energy conversion efficiency. To tackle this issue, a dual-modification strategy involving the incorporation of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was developed. PTFE was introduced to enhance charge trapping through its strong electron affinity, while MWCNTs formed a conductive network to facilitate rapid charge transport. Under optimized doping concentrations of 5 wt.% PTFE and 0.25 wt.% MWCNTs, the composite exhibited substantial performance enhancements, with open-circuit voltage, short-circuit current, and transferred charge increased by 294.43%, 521.0%, and 252.55%, respectively, compared to pure PDMS. A peak power density of 8.37 W/m² was achieved under a 20 MΩ load. The composite membrane exhibited a tensile strength of 4.21 ± 0.42 MPa, elastic modulus of 1.45 ± 0.07 MPa, and elongation at break of 169.80 ± 18.69%. The device displayed excellent thermal stability (20-100 °C) and slight UV-enhanced output, despite degradation at high humidity, it successfully retained 70.76% of its initial voltage at moderate humidity levels (55-65% RH). It maintained stable electrical output after 5000 seconds of continuous operation under mechanical stress, and generated clear voltage signals during various human motions such as walking, running, and jumping. Additionally, our motion recognition model based on deep learning techniques attained a high accuracy of 99.95%, demonstrating its effectiveness in action classification tasks. Combined with a UI visualization interface, it enabled the assessment of motion energy consumption. This study demonstrates an effective material design strategy for improving TENG performance and provides valuable insights for the advancement of high-efficiency wearable energy harvesting and information fusion systems.

Tuning polymer spreading and enhancing butanol pervaporation performance via fluorinated covalent organic framework in PDMS/PEBA membranes

Yixian Wang,Zhibin Ma,Hongxia Guo,Guangwei He,Peitong Lian,Danyang Song,Naixin Wang,Hong Meng,Zhongyi Jiang,Jie Li,Quan-Fu An

While covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have been applied for enhancing membrane separation performance, their influence on membrane formation dynamics remains underexplored. In this study, a polyether block amide (PEBA) interlayer was fabricated on the polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) support. On this flat PEBA/PTFE surface, the spreading behavior of COFs/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) could be studied. The incorporation of fluorinated triformylphloroglucinol-benzenediamine (TpBD-F) COFs significantly enhanced the spreading coefficient from −2.99mN/m to −0.86mN/m on the PEBA surface, forming a thinner and more uniform separation layer. Combined with the TpBD-F's intrinsic 1.4 nm hydrophobic nanochannels, these structural refinements facilitated enhanced butanol adsorption and diffusion. The TpBD-F@PDMS-PEBA/PTFE membrane achieved a flux of 4.8 kg·m −2 ·h −1 and a separation factor of 28.1 for a 1 wt% butanol/water mixture, representing a 118% increase in flux compared to the PDMS-PEBA membrane, while maintaining stable performance over 100 h. This work provides both practical and theoretical guidance for designing COFs mixed-matrix membranes.

Preparation of a superhydrophobic GO/ZIF-67/PDMS composite fabric with high photothermal antibacterial performance and durability

Cong Liu,Tong Lu,Bo Cheng,Rong Chen,Yong Huang,Hao Yang

This study presents the development of a durable, superhydrophobic composite cotton fabric with enhanced photothermal antibacterial properties. Graphene oxide (GO) was first deposited onto cotton fabric to create an anchoring layer, followed by the in-situ growth of ZIF-67 nanoparticles. The fabric was further modified with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to impart a low-surface-energy coating, enhancing both hydrophobicity and stability. GO not only significantly enhanced photothermal conversion efficiency, but also improved the dispersivity and adhesion of the nanoparticles. The resultant GO/ZIF-67/PDMS composite fabric exhibited excellent photothermal performance, reaching 103.2°C within one minute under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation (0.6 W/cm 2 ). The antibacterial activity of the composite was evaluated against Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and Gram-negative Escherichia coli . Under NIR irradiation for 5 min, the survival rates of E. coli and S. aureus were reduced to 0.01% and 9.35%, respectively. Moreover, the fabric maintained both photothermal and hydrophobic properties even after 10 washing cycles in sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) solution or 100 abrasion cycles, demonstrating outstanding durability. These results highlight the potential of GO/ZIF-67/PDMS composite fabric in antibacterial textile with self-cleaning property, particularly in the photothermal antibacterial application.

Hydrophobic PDMS overlayer on wood-supported Mg-MOF-74 enables durable CO2 capture under humid flue gas

Menghuan Wu,Yifang Zhang,Zhiping Xu,Yuqi He,Jialei Wang,Tian Xie,Shuduan Deng,Lidan Zhang,Gang Zhu

Metal–organic frameworks often lose CO 2 capacity in hot, humid flue gas because H 2 O competes for open metal sites (OMSs). Here we report a dual-stabilized, wood-based adsorbent in which Mg-MOF-74 is grown on an aminated wood sponge and overcoated with an ultrathin polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) layer, coupling support immobilization with interfacial hydrophobization while preserving access to OMSs. Under flue-gas-relevant conditions (323 K, 50% RH), the material delivers a CO 2 uptake of 1.68 mmol·g −1 (≈89% of its dry-state capacity) and an IAST CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of 144 for a 50/50 mixture at 323 K. Humid-gas breakthrough tests confirm robust separation performance. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations attribute the humidity tolerance and selectivity to the synergy between accessible OMSs and PDMS-mediated interfacial polarity, without increasing the isosteric heat of adsorption, thereby enabling energy-efficient regeneration. The framework retains its crystallinity after 30 days of water immersion, and a techno-economic estimate projects a material cost of approximately US$10.36 kg −1 at a 1000 t·yr −1 scale. This scalable architecture reconciles capacity, selectivity, humidity resistance, and cost for post-combustion CO 2 capture.

Fabrication of flower clusters-like superhydrophobic surface via a UV curable coating of ODA and V-PDMS

Lixiang Shen,Yingying Lai,Heqing Fu

In this work, a flower clusters-like superhydrophobic surface was fabricated via an ultraviolet (UV) curable coating of octadecylamine (ODA) and vinyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (V-PDMS). ODA self-assembled into many flower clusters-like structures on the surface of the coating, increasing the roughness of the coating surface without additional nanoparticles. V-PDMS formed a highly crosslinked network under a UV lamp, which would be helpful for a robust superhydrophobic surface. The obtained PDMS/ODA fabric showed water contact angle of 161° and sliding angle of 5°. The durability of the superhydrophobic surface was tested by water impacting, tube brush scrubbing, knife scratching, hand twisting, finger pressing, tape adhesion, abrasion, continuous rinsing, and chemical conditions. The experimental results indicated that the superhydrophobic surface have good durability for long service life. Moreover, the PDMS/ODA fabric could selectively absorb oils from water with good separation performance. This work will provide a facile, low cost, and versatile method to prepare superhydrophobic surfaces, and enhance their efficiency of oil–water separation. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate-Reinforced ZIF-67-Based PDMS Hydrophobic Sponge for Efficient and Rapid Oil–Water Separation

Guangqin Fu,Dejun Chen,Mengqi Zhao,Cheng Zeng,Yunchi Yang,Yinnian Liao,Xindong Li

Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) sponges exhibit low oil adsorption capacity due to their monolithic pore structure and limited surface area. Here, we present SDS-ZIF-67/PDMS composite sponges that overcome these limitations. ZIF-67 particles are incorporated into the PDMS matrix via a soft-templating approach, creating a submicron hierarchical pore structure and increasing the number of accessible adsorption sites. Surface functionalization with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) introduces long alkyl chains, modulating surface chemistry and enhancing selective affinity for oil molecules. The composite sponge exhibits a water contact angle of 135°, reaches adsorption equilibrium within 6 min, and achieves 96% separation efficiency for various oils and oil–water mixtures. After 15 adsorption–desorption cycles, 87% of the initial adsorption capacity is retained, demonstrating exceptional cyclic stability. These findings underscore the potential of SDS-ZIF-67/PDMS composite sponges for efficient treatment of oily wastewater.
