Hypothesis We synthesized composite microspheres from cellulose nanocrystal (CNC), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and sodium alginate (SA), which were modified with polyethyleneimine (PEI) to introduce a high density of active amino sites onto the surface via the Schiff base reaction. We hypothesized that these (SA/CNC/PVA)@PEI microspheres would have a high adsorption capacity for aqueous diclofenac sodium (DS). Experiments The PEI-modified composite microspheres were characterized and assessed and optimized for aqueous DS adsorption. In addition, the morphology and synthesis mechanism of the adsorbent were studied. Findings The adsorption process showed a good fit with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model (i.e., the process is driven by a chemical adsorption mechanism) and Langmuir adsorption isotherm model (i.e., adsorption follows a single-layer process). Under the optimum experimental conditions (pH: 4.5, adsorption time: 50 min, temperature: 303 K), the maximum adsorption capacity was 418.4104 mg/g, which was relatively high compared to other reported adsorbents. Importantly, after five adsorption–desorption cycles, (SA/CNC/PVA)@PEI showed only a slight loss in adsorption capacity. Compared with other reported adsorbents, the core–shell composite has a good DS adsorptive capacity and high recyclability.

Defect engineering and the functionalization of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are acknowledged as an effective method to boost the separation capability of mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs). However, these processes are often carried out separately, making it difficult to achieve both objectives simultaneously. Herein, a polyethyleneimine (PEI)-induced simultaneous functionalization and defect engineering strategy is proposed, in which PEI is introduced during the synthesis of RHO-topology ZIF(Cu) to in situ generate structural defects through competitive coordination with Cu 2+ centers. PEI enhanced the interfacial compatibility between the filler and the Pebax matrix through hydrogen-bonding interactions and introduced a facilitated transport effect. Meanwhile, defect engineering exposed additional Cu 2+ Lewis acid sites capable of adsorbing CO 2 and generated additional transport pathways. The synergy between amine functionalization and defect engineering resulted in a substantial enhancement in the separation performance of the MMMs. Under humid conditions, the MMM containing 5 wt % PEI-RHO ZIF(Cu) presented a CO 2 permeability of 188.1 Barrer and a CO 2 /N 2 separation factor of 73.0, representing increases of 95.10% and 78.14%, respectively, relative to Pebax, and surpassing the 2008 Robeson upper bound. This integrated strategy, combining defect engineering with amine functionalization, provides a promising avenue for the development of high-efficiency CO 2 capture MMMs.

In this study, a novel antifouling loose nanofiltration (LNF) membrane was prepared by the cross-linking and grafting of hydrolyzed polyacrylonitrile ultrafiltration (HPAN UF) substrate with a polyethylenimine (PEI) based zwitterionic polymer PEI-CA through the covalent amide bond. The successful introduction of PEI-CA was verified by various techniques. The tailored membrane HPAN-PEICA exhibited ultra-high water permeance (73.5 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 ) and meanwhile maintained excellent rejection (~99.9 %) for dye Brilliant Blue R (BBR), Methyl Blue (MB), Congo red (CR) and Chrome Black T (CBT). In addition, it exhibited ultralow rejection (below ~6 %) towards the inorganic salts (NaCl, Na 2 SO 4 , MgCl 2 and MgSO 4 ), with excellent dye/salt selectivity of ~65. The as-fabricated membrane HPAN-PEICA was proved having good long-term operation stability and pressure resistance properties. Dynamic fouling experiments confirmed that the membrane HPAN-PEICA presented excellent antifouling performance towards four typical model foulants (LYZ, SA , HA and BSA). Over all, we believed that the tailored LNF membrane HPAN-PEICA having great application prospects in textile effluent treatment.

Robust and efficient multimodal catalysis platforms that possess high catalytic activity and enhanced electrical conductivity are preferred for enhancing the electrical analysis performance under a low overpotential. This report describes a function-switchable amperometric sensor for electrochemical monitoring hydrogen peroxide and glucose under relatively low overpotential based on PEI-functionalized metal–organic framework (P-MOF) supported gold nanoparticles/nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (AuNPs/N-GQDs) and glucose oxidase. AuNPs/N-GQDs with high peroxidase mimicking activity was anchored on the P-MOF modified electrode surface as H 2 O 2 sensors, exhibiting a high sensitivity of 134.26 μA mM −1 cm −2 and a detection limit of 3.38 μM. Subsequently, AuNPs/N-GQDs-P-MOF used as a nanocarrier for glucose oxidase (GOx) to achieve “cascade nanoreactor” amplification for glucose detection. The amplified amperometric glucose biosensor showed excellent anti-interference ability, reproducibility, and a limit of detection as low as 0.7 μM (S/N = 3) with high sensitivity of 1512.4 μA mM −1 cm −2 . In addition, the feasibility of the electrochemical biosensor for accurate and quantitative detection of glucose in human serum samples was confirmed with a recovery ranging from 93.2 to 99.3%. The strategy of combining AuNPs/N-GQDs-P-MOF and glucose oxidase for cascade catalysis in this work provides a simple yet efficient approach to prepare nanomaterial-based enzyme-mimics and enzymes hybrids with high performance, which holds great potential in biological and chemical applications of electrochemical devices and biosensing.

Aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) residues in milk pose a major threat to human health, so there is an urgent need for a simple, rapid, and sensitive method for the determination of trace AFM1 in milk. In this study, a competitive immunochromatographic assay (ICA), using visual (PEI/PSS) 4 red silica nanoparticles (SiNPs) as signal amplification probes, was used for the highly sensitive detection of AFM1. The (PEI/PSS) 4 red SiNPs were used to label AFM1 monoclonal antibody (mAb) to prepare ICA for the detection of AFM1. After exploring the optimal conditions of mAb and immunoprobe dosage conditions, the lowest visual detection limit (VDL) of AFM1 in phosphate-buffered saline with Tween 20 (PBST, 10 mM, pH 7.4, containing 1% BSA, 3% sucrose, 1% trehalose, and 0.5% Tween 20) can reach 0.1 pg/mL. The intuitive visually visible value of AFM1 in both PBST and milk was 10 pg/mL. The results showed that the immunochromatographic system based on high chroma color (PEI/PSS) 4 red SiNPs has high sensitivity and broad application prospects for the detection of trace AFM1 residues in milk. The high chroma (PEI/PSS) 4 red SiNPs are expected to be a convenient biomarker for improving the sensitivity of immune chromatography bands.
The schematic diagram shows the detection principle. In this work, in the competitive experiment, (PEI/PSS) 4 red SiNPs were selected as visual labeling materials, and the specific antibody combined with the labeled material was selected as an immune probe. The AFM1-BSA antigen coupled with the macromolecular BSA was fixed on the T line of the nitrocellulose (NC) membrane. The AFM1 in sample solution competes with AFM1-BSA for the specific binding site of immune probe. The detection sensitivity of this method for AFM1 is obtained by judging the change of the red signal intensity produced by the positive sample, compared with the color at the T line of the negative sample.

The hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) has extensive promise for metal corrosion protection due to its good impermeability to gas and liquid. However, the practical application of h-BN in polymer composites is limited by surface incompatibility. Herein, we prepared a homogeneous dispersion of h-BN in water-borne epoxy (EP) matrix by mechanical exfoliation and chemical modification, in which the h-BN powder was ultrasonic to obtain partially hydroxylated BN and the products were modified with water-soluble branched poly-ethyleneimine (PEI) via Lewis acid-base interaction. The electrochemical test (EIS and potentiodynamic polarization) and salt spray test in NaCl solution were used to analyze the corrosion resistance performance of composite coatings. The results show that PEI-BNNS/EP coating has superior and long-term anticorrosion performance for P110 mild steel. The impedance modulus (Z f = 0.01 Hz) of PEI-BNNS/EP still has 6.63 × 10 7 Ω cm 2 after 70 days immersion in the 3.5 wt. % NaCl solution. The PEI has an important role for enhancing the anticorrosion property of PEI-BNNS/EP coating, which increases the dispersibility and compatibility of h-BN in EP and the crosslink density of epoxy resin. Our study gives a strategy for the preparation of easy dispersion h-BN nanosheets in large quantities, thus broadening its practical application in the polymer material field.

To improve hydrophility and antifouling property of Polytetrafluoroethylene flat microfiltration membrane, a novel and facile method was developed to modify the membrane via the polymer of Laccase-catalyzed self-polymerization of Gallic acid and cross-linked with Polyethylenimine, then the surface micro/nanostructures was treated by (2,3-epoxypropoxy)-propytrimethoxysilane. The surface chemical composition, surface morphology, hydrophilicity and antifouling property of the PTFE flat membrane were investigated by ATR-FTIR, XPS, FESEM, water contact angle, pure water flux measurements, respectively. After using this low-cost and simple modification method, PTFE flat membranes were endowed with excellent hydrophilicity, high pure water flux and antifouling property. Besides, the modified PTFE flat membrane could be applied to the separation of oil-in-water emulsion with an ultrahigh efficiency 98.2% and also shows durable oil resistance and antifouling performance, making the membrane easy to reuse. Finally, the surface stability of the modified membrane was studied and the mineralized membrane showed excellent acid resistant ability. Therefore, this facile strategy holds attractive potential practical application in water environmental remediation.

A chemically modified alginate beads for heavy metal removal was prepared using polyethylenimine (PEI) as a modification reagent, which high density active sites were introduced favorably onto the surface by cross-linking reaction, leading to the designing of flexible core-shell/bead-like alginate@PEI sorbent and employed for the adsorption of Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions. This new sorbent was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) etc. The results demonstrated that the optimized pH value was observed at 2.0. The adsorption processes fitted well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Freundlich isotherm in a batch system. The experimental maximum adsorption capacity for Cr(VI) was 431.6 mg/g under an optimal testing condition, which was much higher than that of sodium alginate (SA) (24.2 mg/g). Thomas and Bohart–Adams models were successfully fitted with breakthrough curves obtained under different experimental conditions in a continuous column process. More importantly, the adsorption capacity of the alginate@PEI only showed a slight loss after ten cycles of adsorption-desorption studies. Compared to other reported adsorptive materials, this core-shell/bead-like composite promises advantages of ultra-high adsorption capacity, low-cost, environmental friendliness and excellent recycling performance.

Assisted with polyethylenimine, 4.0 L of water-soluble AgInS2 quantum dots (AIS QDs) were successfully synthesized in an electric pressure cooker. As-prepared QDs exhibit yellow emission with a photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield up to 32%. The QDs also show excellent water/buffer stability. The highly luminescent AIS QDs are used to explore their dual-functional behavior: detection of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)/glucose and cell imaging. The amino-functionalized AIS QDs show high sensitivity and specificity for H2O2 and glucose with detection limits of 0.42 and 0.90 μM, respectively. A linear correlation was established between PL intensity and concentration of H2O2 in the ranges of 0.5–10 μM and 10–300 μM, while the linear ranges were 1–10 μM and 10–1000 μM for detection of glucose. The AIS QDs reveal negligible cytotoxicity on HeLa cells. Furthermore, the luminescence of AIS QDs gives the function of optical imaging.

Laryngeal cancer, a common malignant respiratory tumor, is primarily treated through surgery. However, challenges such as recurrence, metastasis, and drug resistance persist. In recent years, multifunctional drug delivery systems (DDS) based on nanoparticles have shown great potential in improving drug loading and release. We developed a biocompatible core-shell nanoparticle system with a zinc-based metal-organic framework (MOF) as the core, named CP1. The shell, composed of polyethyleneimine (PEI), folic acid, and calcium carbonate, forms a composite called CaCO 3 -PEI-FA. This system enhances biocompatibility and increases the efficacy of biomedical applications. Encapsulating CP1 within the CaCO 3 -PEI-FA shell allows for the targeted delivery of the anticancer drug doxorubicin (DOX) to laryngeal cancer cells (Hep-2), resulting in the CaCO 3 -PEI-FA@CP1@DOX system. The CaCO 3 -PEI-FA composite exhibits strong fluorescence with a peak around 350 nm, confirming successful synthesis and demonstrating its potential as a bioimaging probe. Importantly, the nanoparticle system without DOX showed low toxicity to normal human skin fibroblasts (HSF). In vitro cytology experiments revealed a 38% inhibition rate of Hep-2 cells after 24 h, highlighting the nanocomposite’s significant potential in inhibiting laryngeal cancer cell proliferation and inducing apoptosis, underscoring its promise in targeted laryngeal cancer therapy.

Enzyme immobilization techniques are crucial for enhancing enzyme stability and catalytic efficiency. Traditional methods such as physical adsorption and simple covalent binding often fail to maintain enzyme activity and stability. In this study, an innovative multi-level immobilization strategy was proposed to achieve efficient targeted immobilization of nuclease P1 (NP1) by fine-tuning the surface microenvironment. Molecular simulation results revealed that the distinctive electrostatic distribution and the specific placement of basic amino acids, such as lysine, on the NP1 surface caused dopamine to preferentially adsorb on areas away from NP1’s active site. This selective adsorption facilitated the directed immobilization of NP1, while the positively charged environment generated by the co-deposited surface further enhanced NP1’s adsorption capacity. This multilevel modification was found to significantly optimize the physicochemical environment of the immobilized surface through surface characterization and enzymatic testing. This strategy greatly improves enzyme activity (3590.0 U/mg), stability, and reusability (70 % after 10 cycles). In particular, NP1 on this surface exhibited an optimal Michaelis constant (K m ) of 34.0 mM and a maximum reaction rate of 5.5 mM min −1 , demonstrating the remarkable effect of the modification strategy in enhancing the enzyme catalytic performance. The present study provides an efficient and stable immobilization platform for enzyme catalytic applications by precisely modulating the surface microenvironment and the oriented immobilization strategy, which has an important potential for practical applications. This stable and reusable NP1 platform allows for efficient DNA/RNA cleavage, facilitating its application in industrial biocatalysis, biomedical enzyme-based processes, and biosensors.

It is an intractable challenge that the hierarchical MXene-based nanohybrid fillers are intended to modify the inherent flammability and easily breeding bacteria property of ABS polymeric materials, thereby facilitating wide applicability of ABS composites. Here, an interface engineering strategy was proposed, wherein polyethyleneimine (PEI)-modified silver nanocubes (AgNCs) was firmly assembled on MXenes via electrostatic interaction to construct 0D–2D hierarchical MXene-based nanohybrids (MXene@PEI@AgNC). The MXene was protected and the interface compatibility between MXene-based nanohybrid and ABS matrix was enhanced. Results revealed that the unique hierarchical structure of the composite promoted enhanced dispersion of MXene@PEI@AgNC in the ABS matrix. Combustion tests showed that 1.0 wt%MXene@PEI@AgNC provided the ABS with effective fire safety. Moreover, ABS-1.0 wt%MXene@PEI@AgNC exhibited a 31.88 % decrease in peak heat release rate, a 39.60 % decrease in peak smoke release rate, a 41.50 % decrease in peak CO 2 production rate, and a 50.04 % reduction in the smoke factor. Meanwhile, 1.0 wt%MXene@PEI@AgNC improved the tensile strength of ABS-1.0 %MXene@PEI@AgNC (+18.1 %) without reducing the elongation at break. They also enhanced the antibacterial properties of ABS-1.0 %MXene@PEI@AgNC. This study proposed a novel and feasible approach to address the interfacial stability of MXene and to construct MXene-based hierarchical nanoblends, thereby facilitating the wide practical applications of polymeric nanomaterials in industry.
