Herein, we designed and constructed a dual functional surface with antimicrobial and antifouling abilities to prevent protein and bacterial attachment that are significant challenges in biomedical devices. Primary amino-group-capped sulfobetaine of DMMSA was synthesized and then grafted onto polydopamine pretreated PET sheets via click chemistry. The sheets were subsequently immersed into silver ion solution, in which the absorbed silver ions were reduced to silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in situ by a polydopamine layer. The antifouling assays demonstrated that the resultant PET/DMMSA/AgNPs sheets exhibited great antifouling performances against bovine serum albumin (BSA), bovine fibrinogen (BFG), platelets, and bacteria, the critical proteins/microorganisms leading to implant failure. The antibacterial data suggested that the sheets had dual functions as inhibitors of bacterial growth and bactericide and could efficiently delay the biofilm formation. This repelling and killing approach is green and simple, with potential biomedical applications.

Five disperse dyes (D1–D5) with 2,6-bichlor-4-nitroaniline or 2-chloro-4-nitroaniline as the diazo component and N-substituted anilines as the coupling component were designed and synthesized in order to compare the differences derived from their molecular structure. All the synthesized disperse dyes were characterized by FT-IR, 1H NMR, and elemental analysis. Their spectral property was evaluated with respect to visible absorption properties in various solvents of distinguishable polarity. The synthesized disperse dyes were applied on one-step dyeing of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fabric. The alkali stability of the dyes in case of one-step dyeing at various NaOH concentrations was discussed by comparing color parameters of the dyed PET fabrics. Besides, the alkali stability of the dyes was investigated with respect to the nature of chemical constitution and the substituents therein by X-ray crystal diffraction analysis. The results show that D4 and D5 have excellent alkali stability and can combine pretreatment and dyeing in an alkali bath, which could be attributed to the head-to-tail compact structure, intramolecular and intermolecular forces and large sterically hindered group (−CH2–Ph). The levelness and color fastness as well as mechanical properties of the dyed PET fabrics with a one-step dyeing method were measured by an ISO standard method.

Widespread use of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastics and their recycling challenges have led to substantial accumulation of PET wastes in global environments, with inevitable consequences for their entry into the food chains. Recent studies have increasingly documented the ingestion of microplastics by humans through food and beverages. However, the fate of these microplastics within the gastrointestinal tract, particularly the role of the human gut microbiota, remains inadequately understood. To address this knowledge gap, we employed a bioinformatics workflow integrated with functional verification to investigate the PET digestion/degradation capabilities of intestinal microorganisms. This approach identified a novel PET hydrolase—HGMP01 from the human gut metagenome, which exhibits the capacity to hydrolyze PET nanoparticles. Moreover, comprehensive exploration for HGMP01 homologues in the human gut metagenome and metatranscriptome unveil their distribution in diverse intestinal microorganisms. This study provides biochemical evidence for an unforeseen role of human gut microbiome in plastic digestion, thus holding substantial implications for human health.

The issue of air pollution, encompassing airborne bacteria and particulate matter (PM), has emerged as a prominent concern impacting human comfort and health. However, conventional air filtration materials fail to meet the requirements for efficient PM capture or immediate bacteria elimination, thereby heightening the risk of contracting diseases due to pollutant accumulation during filtration. Herein, the hydroxyl group in cellulose acetate (CA) was used as the nucleation site to facilitate the self-assembly of Cu-MOF crystals on PET substrate through hydrogen bonding, and then a layer of PVDF-HFP was electrostatically sprayed to finally obtain the high-efficiency and low-resistance PET/CA-MOF-PH air filtration material. On the one hand, the PET/CA-MOF-PH filter material exhibits outstanding filtration performance (99.82 % for PM1.0, 99.93 % for PM2.5, and 99.99 % for PM10) and a low-pressure drop (62 Pa) due to the highly dispersed and dense micro- and nanostructures of the surface layers of the filter material. On the other hand, benefitting from Cu 2+ in the Cu-MOF crystals, PET/CA-MOF-PH filter material also performs excellently in bacterial killing. The filtration capacity difference between commercial PET fibers and PET/CA-MOF-PH filter media at various wind speeds was further investigated through dynamic particle capture simulation and airflow field distribution analysis. This study thus suggests that PET/CA-MOF-PH with high filter efficiency, low resistance, and excellent antibacterial activity designed by self-assembly/electrostatic spraying strategy is expected to be an ideal material for air filters, and this strategy can guide the rational design of multifunctional novel filter materials suitable for environmental and energy fields.

The purification of emulsified water from waste oil has become a major research topic. Stenocara beetle-inspired wettable membranes have emerged as separating-efficient designs for purification of oil due to surface energy difference and surface roughness driven demulsification, but they are still suffering from tedious preparation and low robustness. Herein, a one-step electrospinning/electrospraying process was employed to construct Stenocara beetle-like membrane using waste PET and tetrabutyl titanate (TBT) as raw materials for water-in-oil emulsion separation. Specifically, the synchronized deposition process combines electrospinning high-hydrophobic PET fiber membrane and electrospraying superhydrophilic TiO 2 particles (superhydrophilic bumps) generated from hydrolysis of TBT on the PET membrane surface, leading to a similar structure to Stenocara beetle. During the separation process, the bumpy superhydrophilic TiO 2 particles can capture and aggregate tiny water droplets even though the droplet size is smaller than the membrane pore size. Moreover, this Stenocara beetle-like structure exists both on the surface and interior of the samples, resulting in the boosted demulsification ability and excellent separation efficiency up to 99.8 % and flux as high as 6392 L m -2 h −1 . Stenocara beetle-like membrane also exhibits strong mechanical properties and strain of the membrane is up to 128.8 %. Even after the friction test, the membrane maintained cycling stability and abrasion resistance with separation flux higher than 3500 L m -2 h −1 . Overall, this efficient one-step strategy can open up new avenues to fabricate advanced superwetting membranes in the field of emulsion separation.

Petroleum-derived PET plastics and fibers are widely used in packaging and textile applications due to their superior properties and have become a major source of plastic waste. In this study, Ni 2 P-Co x P/ZrO 2 /C NFs p-n heterojunction photocatalytic system with the UiO-66-NH 2 metal-organic backbone (MOFs)-derived ZrO 2 (U-ZrO 2 ) was constructed by a combined method of electrospinning, carbonization, hydrothermal, and phosphorization process. Carbon nanofibers are used as carriers to combine the different components effectively. The Ni 2 P-Co x P/U-ZrO 2 /C NFs show strong light absorption ability throughout the entire visible light region. The needle-shaped structure formed by Ni 2 P-Co x P can provide abundant active sites, increase the reflection of light on the fiber surface, and promote the utilization of light by the photocatalyst. With the incorporation of the MOF structure, the specific surface area of the fibers was greatly enhanced. The coupling of Co x P with Ni 2 P and U-ZrO 2 establishes a p-n heterojunction at the photocatalytic interface, which promotes the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers and prolongs the charge lifetime while maintaining the strong redox capacity of the catalyst, enhancing the photocatalytic degradation activity. The MOF-derived ZrO 2 still maintains an octahedral shape, which favors the attachment of Ni 2 P and Co x P. As a result, the hydrogen production of the system reached 303.64 μ mo l H 2 g Sub − 1 after 24 h, and the weight loss rate of PET reached 18.77 ± 4.28%. Besides, the reusability of the catalyst was greatly improved by re-phosphorization of the used catalyst, which enables it to recover its catalytic degradation efficiency. This work provides new insights into the rational design of heterojunction photocatalysts with superior degradation performance.

Global plastic production, particularly polyethylene terephthalate (PET), has surged in modern society, yet conventional disposal methods like incineration and landfills pose severe environmental risks. Photothermal catalysis emerges as a sustainable solution, combining photo with thermal catalysis processes to reduce energy consumption while enhancing catalytic efficiency. Herein, we demonstrate a promising approach employing black phosphorus nanosheets (BPNSs) featuring exceptional photothermal conversion and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) generation to photothermally accelerate PET depolymerization. Integrating with Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles, the formed covalent P-O bonds shield reactive phosphorus atoms in BPNSs from oxidation to improve their stability, and Fe 3 O 4 enables magnetic recovery and synergy with PET's carbonyl groups. Under solar irradiation, the BPNSs-Fe 3 O 4 composite achieves 98.3 % PET conversion and 95.2 % bis(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate (BHET) yield at 185 °C in ethylene glycol, 2.8-fold and 6.5-fold higher than traditional thermal catalysis, respectively. Mechanistic studies reveal that localized photothermal heating and 1 O 2 -driven nucleophilic elimination of ester groups collaboratively enhance the reaction kinetics, reducing the activation energy by 53.7 %. Successful outdoor validation and BHET repolymerization confirm the practicability. This closed-loop photothermal strategy demonstrates excellent efficiency and product quality, offering a viable pathway toward sustainable plastic upcycling with dual environmental and economic potentials.

Purpose The reversibility of early liver fibrosis highlights the need for improved early detection and monitoring techniques. Fibroblast activation protein (FAP) is a promising theranostics target significantly upregulated during fibrosis. This preclinical and preliminary clinical study investigated a FAP-targeted probe, gallium-68-labeled FAP inhibitor 04 ([ 68 Ga]Ga-DOTA-FAPI-04), for its capability to visualize liver fibrosis. Methods The preclinical study employed [ 68 Ga]Ga-DOTA-FAPI-04 micro-positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) on carbon tetrachloride-induced mice model (n = 34) and olive oil-treated control group (n = 26), followed by validation of the probe's biodistribution. Hepatic uptake was correlated with fibrosis and inflammation levels, quantified through histology and serum assays. FAP and α-smooth muscle actin expression were determined by immunohistochemistry, as well as immunofluorescence. The subsequent clinical trial enrolled 26 patients with suspected or confirmed liver fibrosis to undergo [ 68 Ga]Ga-DOTA-FAPI-04 PET/magnetic resonance imaging or PET/CT. Key endpoints included correlating [ 68 Ga]Ga-DOTA-FAPI-04 uptake with histological inflammation grades and fibrosis stages, and evaluating its diagnostic and differential efficacy compared to established serum markers and liver stiffness measurement (LSM). Results [ 68 Ga]Ga-DOTA-FAPI-04 mean uptake in mice livers was notably higher than in control mice, increasing from week 6 [0.70 ± 0.11 percentage injected dose per cubic centimeter (%ID/cc)], peaking at week 10 (0.97 ± 0.15%ID/cc) and slightly reducing at week 12 (0.89 ± 0.28%ID/cc). The hepatic biodistribution and FAP expression showed a consistent trend. In the patient cohort, hepatic [ 68 Ga]Ga-DOTA-FAPI-04 uptake presented moderate correlations with inflammation grades (r = 0.517 to 0.584, all P < 0.05) and fibrosis stages (r = 0.653 to 0.698, all P < 0.01). The average SUVmax to background ratio in the liver showed superior discriminative ability, especially between stage 0 and stage 1, outperforming LSM (area under curve 0.984 vs. 0.865). Conclusion [ 68 Ga]Ga-DOTA-FAPI-04 PET shows significant potential for non-invasive visualization and dynamic monitoring of liver fibrosis in both preclinical experiment and preliminary clinical trial, especially outperforming other common clinical indicators in the early stage. Solid acid will be an ecofriendly and efficient catalyst for the hydrolysis of polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Very highly Zr-doped MFI-structured zeolites as catalysts for PET hydrolysis were successfully synthesized for the first time. Comprehensive characterizations confirmed the successful incorporation of Zr into the framework. To comprehend the role of Zr within the framework, density functional calculations were employed to investigate its impact on the surface properties and hydrolysis processes. The results demonstrated that Zr d-orbitals enhance Lewis acidity of the catalyst by contributing to the formation of zeolite’s lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals. The interaction between the model molecule and the catalyst surface was enhanced by doping Zr, leading to electron redistribution toward the surface direction on the carbonyl oxygen of model molecule. Consequently, the carbonyl carbon developed a partial positive charge, and the hydrolysis reaction was promoted. The experimental results validated that the Zr-doped catalyst exhibited a 64% enhancement in the reaction rate.

Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) plays vital roles in promoting angiogenesis, tissue invasion, and resistance to apoptosis, so it has become an attractive biomarker for imaging and therapy of cancer. Numerous radio-tracers for detection of COX-2 in vivo have been reported, but no one has been successfully applied in clinic. In this study, the radiosynthesis and evaluation of [ 18 F] 6 , containing a 1,5-diarylpyrrole structure, as a radiotracer for imaging of COX-2 is described. [ 18 F] 6 was prepared within 90 min synthesis time with radiochemical yields (RCYs) of 2–6% (n = 7, decay corrected) from [ 18 F]fluoride by a one-step 18 F-trifluoromethylation reaction. After purification by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), its radiochemical purity (RCP) was higher than 98%, and the molar activity was 156–210 MBq/mmol. The stability of [ 18 F] 6 was determined by incubation in saline and fetal bovine serum (FBS) in vitro, showing excellent stability in 4 h. The specific binding of [ 18 F] 6 was evaluated using MCF-7 cells (COX-2 positive cells) in vitro, where the radiotracer uptake was blocked in the presence of Celecoxib (a commonly used COX-2 inhibitor). However, no tumor accumulation of [ 18 F] 6 could be observed by micro-PET/CT studies on MCF-7 tumor-bearing mice in vivo. This may be due to the insufficient molar activity of [ 18 F] 6, or inadequate expression of COX-2 in MCF-7. In conclusion, optimizations of radiosynthesis and evaluations of specific binding in suitable model are further still needed to verify the potential of [ 18 F] 6 as a COX-2 imaging agent.

Biodegradation, particularly via enzymatic degradation, has emerged as an efficient and eco-friendly solution for Poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PET) pollution. The production of PET hydrolases plays a role in the large-scale enzymatic degradation. However, an effective variant, 4Mz, derived from Thermobifida fusca cutinase (Tfu_0883), was previously associated with a significant reduction in yield when compared to the wild-type enzyme. In this study, a novel cell membrane protection strategy was developed to enhance the yield of 4Mz. This approach increased the yield of 4Mz by 18.2-fold from shaken flasks to 3-L bioreactors, reaching a yield of 3.1 g·L −1 , the highest yield of a PET hydrolase described thus far. In addition, the raw culture broth from 4Mz was applied directly for the enzymatic degradation of PET bottles, achieving a 91.2 % degradation rate. These advancements render the large-scale enzymatic degradation of PET more feasible, thus contributing to the more sustainable management of plastic waste.

Plastic waste has become a serious global issue. Thermal treatment of waste PET faces critical drawbacks including severe reactor clogging and low-value oxygen-rich bio-oil, restricting large-scale chemical recycling. Co-pyrolysis with hydrogen-rich low-density polyethylene (LDPE) over modified zeolite provides a viable route to overcome these barriers. In this study, reaction parameters including temperature, plastic/catalyst ratio and PET/LDPE ratio were optimized, and Fe-Ni bimetallic modified HZSM-5 was fabricated via impregnation to boost monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (MAHs) production. LDPE served as a hydrogen donor to facilitate PET deoxygenation via synergistic effects. At 550 °C with a plastic/catalyst ratio of 1:4 and PET/LDPE ratio of 2:3, the liquid yield hit 80.2%, and all detectable organic compounds in the liquid phase identified by GC–MS were aromatic hydrocarbons. Among all prepared mono- and bimetallic zeolites, 3Fe7Ni/HZ delivered optimal MAHs selectivity at 80.5%. This 20% promotion over unmodified HZSM-5 stems from balanced metal dispersion and tuned acid sites unique to Fe–Ni co-loading. This work offers a feasible strategy for converting waste plastics into high-value aromatics and further trials with varied metal contents will be needed to extend industrial applicability.
