The rapid development of the clean energy industry has given great impetus to energy-efficient storage and conversion technologies. Film capacitors have attracted much attention because of their higher charge and release rates, greater energy density, and extended life cycle. But the lower recharging and discharging efficiency and insulation properties pertaining to the electricity used in capacitors limit the improvement of their energy storage performance. In this paper, the addition of the linear polymer polycarbonate (PC) to polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) through a blending strategy and the subsequent acquisition of the high-dielectric nanofiller titanium dioxide (TiO2) to the blended matrix is expected to achieve synergistic optimization of the insulation and polarization properties, thereby enhancing the energy storage performance of the mixed media. The findings show that great storage of energy productivity (Ue ≈ 11.43 J/cm3, η ≈ 57.08%) is obtained for 40 vol % PC/PVDF-x wt %-TiO2 at an optimum field strength of 450 kV/mm when the TiO2 doping amount x is 0.9 wt %. Compared with pure PVDF, its Ue is improved by 2.3 times, η by 1.2 times, and Eb by 1.5 times. This research presents a viable answer for applying PVDF-based high-energy-storage film capacitors.

The preparation and energy release mechanism of highly reactive n-Al/F-polymer metastable intermixed composites are both desirable and challenging. In this study, we employed an optimized electrospray sampling strategy to significantly enhance the reaction activity of aluminum-based MICs, as well as their combustion performance. It is evident that the optimization of the sampling strategy yielded remarkable results. Compared to the physical mixture, MICs-1 exhibited a 7.2-fold and 9.9-fold increase in P max and P max /Δ t , respectively. The combustion rate experienced an 8.5-fold improvement, and the energy release efficiency rose from 52.18 % to 68.11 %. An analysis of the energy evolution mechanism reveals a mitigation of the reactive sintering phenomenon observed in MICs-1. The presence of PVDF facilitates the reactivity of aluminum powders by selectively corroding the alumina shell. The reaction kinetics parameters indicate that MICs-1 demonstrates characteristic three-step reaction behavior and exhibits a lower reaction energy barrier. Furthermore, ReaxFF molecular dynamics simulations demonstrate the adsorption and dissociation of PVDF on the surface of aluminum powders, leading to erosion defects in the alumina crystal structure. These defects, in turn, induce the ignition reaction.

Gold nanospheres (Au NSs) and gold nanorods (Au NRs) are traditional noble metal plasmonic nanomaterials. Particularly, Au NRs with tunable longitudinal plasmon resonance from the visible to the near-infrared (NIR) range were suitable for highly efficient photothermal applications due to the extended light-receiving range. In this work, we synthesized Au NRs and Au NSs of similar volumes and subsequently developed them into Au NR/poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and Au NS/PVDF nanofilms, both of which exhibited excellent solar photothermal performance evaluated by solar photothermal experiments. We found that the Au NR/PVDF nanofilm showed a higher solar photothermal performance than the Au NS/PVDF nanofilm. Through detailed analysis, such as morphological characterization, optical measurement, and finite element method (FEM) modeling, we found that the plasmonic coupling effects inside the aggregated Au NR nanoclusters contributed to the spectral blue shifts and intensified the photothermal performance. As compared to Au NS/PVDF nanofilms, the Au NR/PVDF nanofilm exhibited a higher efficient light-to-heat conversion rate because of the extended light-receiving range and high absorbance, as a result of the strong plasmonic interactions inside nanoclusters, which was further validated by monochromatic laser photothermal experiments and FEM simulations. Our work proved that the Au NRs have huge potential for plasmonic solar photothermal applications and are envisioned for novel plasmonic applications.

Membrane distillation (MD) has emerged as a promising technology for hypersaline wastewater treatment. However, membrane scaling is still a critical issue for common hydrophobic MD membranes. Herein, we report a multi-layered surface modification strategy on the commercial polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane via plasma treatment and surface fluorination cycles. The repeated plasma treatment process generates more reaction sites for the fluorination reaction, leading to higher fluorination density and more branched structures. MD tests with CaSO4as the scaling agent show that the modification strategy mentioned above improves the membrane scaling resistance. Notably, the PVDF membrane treated with three cycles of plasma and fluorination treatments exhibits the best anti-scaling performance while maintaining almost the same membrane flux as the unmodified PVDF membrane. This study suggests that a highly branched surface molecular structure with low surface energy benefits the MD process in both membrane flux and scaling resistance. Besides, our research demonstrates a universal and facile approach for membrane treatment to improve membrane scaling resistance. Keywords:membrane distillation;multi-layered surface modification;scaling resistance;superhydrophobic membrane

Membrane distillation (MD) is promising desalination technology for hypersaline wastewater treatment. However, traditional MD membranes are subject to low vapor flux and mineral scaling. In this study, we report the fabrication of a composite membrane composed of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and metal azolate framework-4 (MAF-4) via electrospinning. The highly porous MAF-4 provides additional vapor transfer channels and better heat insulation , thereby significantly increasing the membrane flux compared to a bare electrospun PVDF membrane. The surface chemistry of the MAF-4 surface is further tailored with fluorinated functional groups through the coordination between the fluorinated molecule and the surface Zn atom. This surface modification changes the surface wettability of the MAF-4 and thus improves the membrane scaling resistance. This study demonstrates a universal approach for preparing high flux and scaling-resistant MD membranes. In addition, the tunable surface property of MAF-4 can also be utilized to design and fabricate other types of membrane surfaces by coordinating different functional molecules.

Membrane technology plays an important role in wastewater separation and purification. However, the problem of poor hydrophobicity of the membrane is a serious obstacle to its application. With anti-cancer, prevention and control of cardiovascular diseases and other effects, tea polyphenols (TP), the main component of tea stains, have been widely studied in medical treatment, food, and biology. Here, inspired by an interesting phenomenon that some tea stains are difficult to clean in the cup after brewing tea, a facile tea polyphenols coating method was explored at the ambient condition to mitigate membrane fouling . The modification method is not only environmental protection, low cost, but also safe and healthy. The contact Angle of the TP modified film is reduced to 39°, and the pure water flux is up to 13,159 L•m-2• H-1, indicating that the hydrophilicity is significantly improved. In addition, TP film also has excellent antifouling performance (emulsion retention rate is 98.9%, water flux recovery is about 99.7%). Meanwhile, the TP modified membrane was stable in the acidic condition in the long-term rinsing experiment. In addition, titanium ions were introduced to improve the stability of TP-modified membranes under pure water or alkaline conditions since the TP coating imparts a binding side to bind metal ions . In the pure water and alkaline condition, the modified membrane showed outstanding stability after Titanium ions have been complexed.

Gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) have attracted extensive attention in lithium-ion batteries due to their high security and excellent electrochemical performance. However, their inferior Li-ion transference number, low room-temperature ionic conductivity, and poor long cycle stability raise challenges in practical applications. Herein, a flexible poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene)-butanedinitrile (PVDF-HFP-SN)-based GPE (PSGPE) is synthesized successfully by a general immersion precipitation method. The resultant PSGPEs have numerous connecting pores to ensure sufficient space for liquid electrolytes. Moreover, the reduced crystallinity of PVDF-HFP and the high polarity of SN can reduce the energy barrier of Li-ions shuttling between pores. The synergistic effect possesses a high ionic conductivity of 1.35 mS·cm −1 at room temperature with a high Li-ion transference number of 0.69. The PVDF-HFP-SN-based GPE is applied in a LiFePO 4 /graphite battery, which can realize stable cycling performance for 350 cycles and good rate performance at room temperature. These results demonstrate that the novel PSGPE possesses advantage in simplified production process, which can improve the practicability of gel polymer lithium-ion batteries.

Organic/inorganic composite solid electrolyte has been a hot topic due to combining the merits of both components. Herein, a series of organic/inorganic composite solid electrolytes were prepared by casting method, in which polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) was modified with amphoteric sulfonate betaine (SB) and combined with the different contents (0 %, 10 %, 20 % and 30 %) of Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (LLZO) and 20 % bis(trifluoromethane) sulphonyl (LiTFSI). The resultant samples were marked as 0%LLZO/SB-PVDF/LiTFSI, 10%LLZO/SB-PVDF/LiTFSI, 20%LLZO/SB-PVDF/LiTFSI and 30%LLZO/SB-PVDF/LiTFSI, respectively. As expected, composite solid electrolyte exhibited the desirable overall performances. Especially, 20%LLZO/SB-PVDF/LiTFSI membrane exhibited high ionic conductivity (1.73 × 10 −4 S/cm), wide electrochemical window (5.22 V), high Li + transference number (t Li + = 0.67) and high mechanical property, probably due to the synergistic effect of LLZO and amphoteric SB modification. Specifically, the amphoteric SB promoted the dissociation of LiTFSI and endowed PVDF matrix with the ionic conductivity, while LLZO facilitated high ionic conductivity, t Li + and mechanical property. Resultantly, Li//LiFePO 4 cell with 20%LLZO/SB-PVDF/LiTFSI membrane delivered 129.5 mAh/g at 1.0C for 200 cycles and 94.0 % capacity retention, demonstrating high application feasibility in the solid-state lithium ion battery . Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations showed that the binding energy of the amphoteric SB-Li + (C 11 H 21 NO 5 S-Li + ) system was 80.93 kcal/mol, higher than 75.55 kcal/mol of the LiTFSI system, indicating that the amphoteric SB could indeed promote the dissociation of LiTFSI.

Membrane distillation (MD) has attracted growing attention as a sustainable green membrane process technology for seawater and high saline water desalination , yet seriously challenged by the potential membrane wetting and fouling. Herein, a controllable approach to fabricate tailor-made MD membranes was proposed via combining in-situ growth of SiO2 nanoparticles with membrane surface activation and low surface energy substances. SiO2 nanoparticles distributed uniformly on the membrane surface and combined with the intrinsic microstructure of the membrane, a hybrid macro/micro-structure was constructed, further endowing the membrane with superhydrophobicity. The modified membranes exhibited excellent wetting-resistance properties and over 99.9 % salt rejection during vacuum membrane distillation (VMD) process. The surface wetting and anti-nucleation theory special for MD membranes was uncovered. This theory and VMD experiments synchronously indicated that the hybrid macro/micro structure with optimized nanoparticle size rendered the resulting fabricated membranes enhanced permeate flux and anti-fouling properties. The optimal L-F-3 membrane achieved high flux (16.08 kg/(m2·h)) under feed temperature of 60 °C with a water contact angle of 150° and LEP (liquid entry pressure) of 2.9 bar. Finally, the modified membranes possessed the enlarged effective evaporative surface and intensified the nucleation barrier as well as the interfacial nanoscale turbulent flow without potential scaling.

Polymer dielectric capacitors, with their high energy storage density and fast release of energy, have recently received increasing attention for their ability to meet the critical requirements of pulsed power devices in low-consumption systems. In this context, this paper reports that surface-modified single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) were successfully synthesized and used as fillers to improve the energy storage and mechanical performance of poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP)-based composites. The PVDF-HFP/SWCNT composites realize high dielectric constants and low percolation thresholds of 62 and 0.25, respectively. In particular, when composites possess an SWCNT content of only 0.4 vol.%, an acceptable energy storage density of 0.24 J/cm 3 at a low electric field of 700 kV/cm along with a high energy storage efficiency (74%) is also observed. Meanwhile, the tensile strength and breaking elongation are 44 MPa and 8.1%, respectively. According to detailed characterization results, SWCNT with low filling are uniformly dispersed and show a certain orientation in PVDF-HFP after surface modification, which is the key to improve the composite performance. These results provide an effective method for fabricating flexible-polymer composites with a high density of energy storage.

Polymer nanocomposites with improved dielectric permittivity and high breakdown strength are extremely desirable for the flexible electronic devices and power systems. The compatibility of fillers and polymer matrix is important in determining the dielectric and breakdown strength properties. The core–shell structure concept is useful to improve the compatibility of fillers with polymer matrix. Herein, an organic thermoplastic urethanes (TPU) polymer shell was successfully grafted on the surface of barium titanate (BaTiO 3 , BT) and such a TPU shell improved the permittivity and breakdown strength of TPU@BT/PVDF polymer nanocomposites greatly. The permittivity of TPU@BT/PVDF nanocomposites with 12 wt% fillers at 10 2 Hz was up to 13.5, which was 1.5 times higher than that of pure poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF). The improvement of the dielectric properties could be attributed to the enhanced interfacial polarisation between BT nanoparticles and TPU shell. Besides, the compatibility of BT nanoparticles and PVDF matrix was improved after the introduction of TPU shell. Accordingly, a highest breakdown strength value about 373 MV/m was obtained for the TPU@BT/PVDF nanocomposites with 7 wt% fillers. The core–shell strategy could be extended to a variety of inorganic fillers to improve the dielectric and breakdown strength properties of polymer nanocomposites.

The exploitation of a new adsorbent with a high adsorption performance and recyclability is of great practical significance for the treatment of wastewater containing mercury ions. In this study, a novel membrane adsorbent was fabricated by blending MoS 2 nanosheets into a PVDF polymer matrix (P-PVDF/MoS 2 ) followed by non-solvent-induced phase conversion. This material was able to bind mercury ions and was not affected by the solution ionic strength, co-existing anions, or interfering heavy metal ions . The optimal pH range for mercury ion elimination was 4.5–6.0, and P-PVDF/MoS 2 exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of 578 mg g −1 . The pseudo-second-order adsorption kinetics and Langmuir isotherm models best described the adsorption process. The adsorption mechanism was mainly monolayer chemisorption , for which the S groups were the major active sites. Furthermore, the membrane could be removed from the aqueous solution easily using tweezers, and the removal efficiency of mercury ions remained over 90% after ten cycles. This study suggests that the inexpensive and recyclable P-PVDF/MoS 2 membranes can be used for the efficient removal of heavy metal ions from wastewater at a large scale.
