Most environmental contaminants exist as a complex mixture of both metallic and organic pollutants and it is thus often a major challenge to remove both components simultaneously. In this paper, due to its low cost and environmentally friendliness, iron nanoparticles (Fe NPs) were successfully prepared using a one-step green synthesis for the simultaneous in-situ remediation of mixed contaminants. Specifically Fe NPs were used for the simultaneous removal of Pb(II) and rifampicin. The removal efficiency for Pb(II) and rifampicin were 100% and 91.6%, respectively. To better understand the mechanism of mixed contaminant removal by Fe NPs various characterization methods and the major conditions impacting removal efficiency were examined. It was concluded that (1) polyphenols and caffeine, both ubiquitous in green tea extracts, acted as both reducing and capping agents during the preparation of Fe NPs, reducing the agglomeration of Fe NPs and increasing their stability and reactivity; (2) the removal mechanism of contaminants involved Pb(II) being adsorbed onto the surface of Fe NPs due to the innate strong adsorption of metal ions onto iron oxides , while rifampicin and Pb(II) both interacted positively with the functional groups on the surface of Fe NPs. Overall, this study demonstrated that green synthesis Fe NPs had potential for use as inexpensive and efficient adsorbent for the simultaneous removal of both Pb(II) and rifampicin from wastewater.

Herein, we report a novel type of smart graphene oxide nanocomposites (MGO@PNB) with excellent magnetism and high thermosensitive ion-recognition selectivity of lead ions (Pb2+). The MGO@PNB are fabricated by immobilizing superparamagnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-benzo-18-crown-6 acrylamide) thermosensitive microgels (PNB) onto graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets using a simple one-step solvothermal method and mussel-inspired polydopamine chemistry. The PNB are composed of cross-linked poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) chains with numerous appended 18-crown-6 units. The 18-crown-6 units serve as hosts that can selectively recognize and capture Pb2+ from aqueous solution, and the PNIPAM chains act as a microenvironmental actuator for the inclusion constants of 18-crown-6/Pb2+ host–guest complexes. The loaded Fe3O4 NPs endow the MGO@PNB with convenient magnetic separability. The fabricated MGO@PNB demonstrate remarkably high ion-recognition selectivity of Pb2+ among the coexisting metal ions because of the formation of stable 18-crown-6/Pb2+ inclusion complexes. Most interestingly, the MGO@PNB show excellent thermosensitive adsorption ability toward Pb2+ due to the incorporation of PNIPAM functional chains on the GO. Further thermodynamic studies indicate that the adsorption of Pb2+ onto the MGO@PNB is a spontaneous and endothermic process. The adsorption kinetics and isotherm data can be well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model, respectively. Most importantly, the Pb2+-loaded MGO@PNB can be more easily regenerated by alternatively washing with hot/cold water than the commonly used regeneration methods. Such multifunctional graphene oxide nanocomposites could be used for specific recognition and removal of Pb2+ from water environment.

Potentially toxic dichlorophenols and heavy metal ions commonly coexist in industrial sewage, posing a serious threat to public health and the environment and making the treatment more challenging. Inspired by Suzhou bifacial embroidery, whereby the Janus-like planar structure allows different compositions to be compartmentalized onto two distinct surfaces, Janus silica nanosheets partitioning bispecific artificial receptors (i.e., molecularly imprinted sites and thiol groups) onto distinct recognition surfaces (J-MIPs/cys) were designed to independently take up 2,6-dichlorophenol (DCP) and Pb(II). For J-MIPs/cys, the thiol groups are expected to capture Pb(II) via chelating action and molecularly imprinted cavities act as highly specific recognition sites for DCP. J-MIPs/cys possessed uniform cross-sectional dimensions and thickness (∼25.3 nm), and a particle-like surface imprinted layer (∼21.8 nm). In the monocomponent system, J-MIPs/cys displayed fast binding kinetics (60 min and 45 min), large monolayer adsorption capacity (129.4 mg g−1 and 82.95 mg g−1), high affinity, and excellent regeneration after five reuse cycles (9.134% and 12.16% loss in adsorption amounts) for DCP and Pb(II), respectively. Additionally, a spontaneous and endothermic adsorption process was also confirmed. In a binary system, the presence of Pb(II) produced a prominent increase in DCP adsorption at high initial concentrations and a decrease at low initial concentrations, owing to the partial complexation of Pb(II) with excess DCP and occupation of imprinted sites by Pb(II). However, the uptake of Pb(II) was inhibited over the whole range of concentration in the presence of DCP due to the competitive adsorption onto thiol groups. In summary, J-MIPs/cys integrating novel bispecific receptors open wide possibilities for efficient and specific treatment of coexisting toxic pollutants.

Smithsonite is a readily dissolvable carbonate mineral that is naturally hydrophilic, making recovery of this ore by flotation difficult. The flotation results showed that conditioning with only sodium sulfide (Na 2 S) did not successfully allow the smithsonite samples to float, whereas treatment with a combination of S(II), Pb(II) and xanthate (with Na 2 S as the sulfurizing reagent, lead ions (Pb(II)) as the activator, and xanthate as the collector) improved the flotation of smithsonite, achieving a mass recovery of 95.8%. A combination of analytical techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), in conjunction with depth profiling , was used to investigate the chemical nature of the sulfur and lead species on the smithsonite surface. For S(II)-conditioned smithsonite, a layer of ZnS formed on the smithsonite (ZnCO 3 ) substrates; this newly formed ZnS coating was amorphous or poorly crystallized. For smithsonite samples conditioned with S(II) and Pb(II), the microstructures and the phase constituents, obtained by AFM and XRD analyses, confirmed the formation of the PbS species with a cubic galena structure on the surface. XPS depth profiling showed that the PbS layer was 18-nm thick, which corresponds to 30 PbS molecular layers . This study presents direct evidence that the coating of the activation product, PbS, on the smithsonite surface was similar to a relatively thick galena layer, which led to successful flotation.

Organometal halide perovskite nanocrystals hold vast potential for application in photovoltaics, light emitting diodes, low-threshold lasers, and photodetectors due to their size-tunable bandgap energies and photoluminescence as well as excellent electron and hole mobilities. However, the synthesis of such nanocrystals typically suffers from poor structural stability in solution and the coexistence of lamellate nanocrystals (nanoplatelets) and spherical nanocrystals (nanoparticles). Here we show that the pure nanoparticle morphology of CH3NH3PbBr3 nanocrystals can be realized by employing lead oleate (Pb(C17H33COO)2) as the sole lead source and controlled using short- and long-chain mixed alkyl ammonium. These nanocrystals are monodispersed (2.2 ± 0.4 nm in diameter), highly fluorescent (with a quantum yield approaching 85%), and highly stable in the solution (for more than 30 days). Comparative studies reveal that the shape of CH3NH3PbBr3 nanocrystals is strongly dependent on the lead source, PbBr2 and Pb(C17H33COO)2, and evolves as a function of the ratio of short- and long-chain alkyl ammoniums in the precursors. At an optimal short to long-chain alkyl ammonium ratio of 4 : 6, the growth of CH3NH3PbBr3 nanoplatelets can be selectively suppressed with Pb(C17H33COO)2 as the sole lead source, enhancing the overall photoluminescence quantum yield of the produced CH3NH3PbBr3 nanocrystals. This work reveals important new insights for controlled synthesis of perovskite nanocrystals with pure crystal shape and significantly improved photoluminescence properties and stability.

The authors report on a one-pot approach for synthesizing highly fluorescent protamine-stabilized gold nanoclusters. These are shown to be a viable nanoprobe for selective and sensitive fluorometric determination of lead(II) via quenching of fluorescence via Pb(II)-Au(I) interaction. Under optimized conditions, fluorescence measured at excitation/emission peaks of 300/599 nm drops in the 80 nM–15 μM lead(II) concentration range. The detection limit is 24 nM, and relative standard deviations (for n = 11) at concentrations of 0.10, 4.0 and 15 μM are 1.6, 2.5 and 1.9%, respectively. The relative recoveries of added lead(II) in the water samples ranged from 97.9 ± 2.29% to 101.2 ± 1.83%.
Lead(II) ions are found to be able to selectively and sensitively quench the fluorescence of the protamine-gold nanoclusters (PRT-AuNCs). Thereby, an inexpensive, selective and sensitive lead(II) assay was established.

At present, the remediation for organic pollutants and heavy metals co-contaminated soils is a challenge which needs to be broken through. In this study, alkyl polyglucoside (APG), citric acid (CA), and nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) were chosen to enhance the phytoremediation of pyrene and Pb co-contaminated soils by perennial ryegrass. Through the comparison of the results with different applications, it could be found that the application of NTA was beneficial to the growth of perennial ryegrass, the underground and aboveground biomass were increased by 172.9–236.1% and 61.9–142.8%, respectively, meanwhile, photosynthetic activity of perennial ryegrass was affected positively. More importantly, the combined application of APG and NTA maximally promoted the accumulation and translocation of Pb (BF/TF, 0.44/0.61) and dissipation of pyrene (71.6%). These results indicated that the combined application of APG and NTA could be promising for future practical application of phytoremediation. However, the optimal dosage ratio of APG and NTA for phytoremediation needs to be further researched.

Barium titanate ceramic is frequently used as a ferroelectric material and can be applied in the pulse power field in energy storage devices. Its properties, including dielectric , ferroelectric, and energy storage properties, can be significantly improved through doping. In this work, we prepared a series of (1- x )Ba 0.65 Sr 0.245 Bi 0.07 TiO 3 - x ZnO ( x = 0.005, 0.01, 0.02, 0.03) lead-free bulk relaxor ferroelectric ceramics by a traditional die-pressing processing route. The uniformity of the grain sizes for these ceramics was improved, and the grains were refined when a certain amount of ZnO was introduced into BaTiO 3 -based ceramics. In addition, the breakdown strength was improved in the case where the relaxor behavior was not significantly improved. It should be noted that the sample doped with 0.02 mol Zn showed the maximum room-temperature storage density (1.51 J/cm 3 ) at the largest electric field strength (210 kV/cm). At the same time, this ceramic exhibited good stability to temperature (60–150 °C) and frequency (10–100 Hz) variations, as well as fantastic fatigue resistance (10,000 charge-discharge cycles). This paper presents in-depth studies of the structure, morphology, electrical properties, and energy storage performance of ZnO-modified BaTiO 3 -based ceramics.

Calcium carbonate from geological sources (geo-CaCO3, e.g., calcite, aragonite) is used extensively in removing heavy metals from wastewater through replacement reaction. However, geo-CaCO3 has an intrinsically compact crystalline structure that results in low efficiency in pollutant removal and thus its use may produce enormous sludge. In this work, biogenic calcium carbonate (bio-CaCO3) derived from oyster shells was used to remove Pb(II) from wastewater and found to significantly outperform geo-CaCO3 (calcite). The thermodynamics study revealed that the maximum adsorption capacity of bio-CaCO3 for Pb(II) was three times that of geo-CaCO3, reaching up to 1667 mg/g. The kinetics study disclosed that the dissolution kinetics and the rate of intraparticle diffusion of bio-CaCO3 were faster than those of geo-CaCO3. Extensive mechanism research through X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), N2 adsorption/desorption test and mercury intrusion porosimetry showed that the hierarchical porous organic–inorganic hybrid structure of bio-CaCO3 expedited the dissolution of CaCO3 to provide abundant CO32– active sites and facilitated the permeation and diffusion of Pb(II) into the bulk solid phases. In addition, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) study, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis, and the examination of Pb(II) removal ability of bio-CaCO3 after calcination indicated that the organic functional groups of bio-CaCO3 also facilitated the immobilization of Pb(II) into CaCO3 particles, although the major contribution was from the hierarchical porous structure of bio-CaCO3.

Carboxylated cellulose nanocrystal-sodium alginate (CCN-Alg) hydrogel beads were easily prepared through a cross-linking method. The structure and properties of the composite beads were characterized by TEM, FTIR, SEM, XPS, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and zeta potential measurement. A high ratio of 76% of the Pb(II) ion was adsorbed within the first 2 h, and the adsorption equilibrium was nearly reached after 3 h. The experimental isotherm could be fitted by the Langmuir model, yielding an extreme adsorption capacity of 338.98 mg g −1 . The adsorption process followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and thermodynamic analyses confirmed that the adsorption is a spontaneous and endothermic process. Regeneration tests with acid treatment indicated that the CCN-Alg beads performed well in repeated Pb(II) adsorptions, as they could maintain an adsorption capacity of 223.2 mg g −1 after five repeated cycles. These results indicate that these CCN-Alg beads are a potentially effective and sustainable adsorbent for application in wastewater treatment.

A novel composite material (MCNC@Zn-BTC) is synthesized from magnetic cellulose nanocrystals (MCNC) and a metal–organic framework (MOF), based on Zn(II) and benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid (Zn-BTC), using a simple mechanical agitation method at room temperature. The developed MCNC@Zn-BTC was characterized by SEM, TEM, FTIR, XRD, XPS, and VSM instruments. The impact of MCNC@Zn-BTC dose, initial Pb(II) concentration, contact time, pH, and adsorption temperature have been explored. Results demonstrated that only 30 min was needed to achieve the adsorption equilibrium; the maximum adsorption capacity was 558.66 mg/g at 298.2 K. Besides, data obtained were fitted to a Langmuir isotherm model (R2 = 0.9890), and the adsorption kinetics followed a pseudo-second-order model. In addition, the removal (%) of Pb(II) remained greater than 80% after five recycled times. Therefore, the novel MCNC@Zn-BTC adsorbent displays great potential to improve the quality of environmental water contaminated with heavy metals.

Pb and Zn pollution for soil are becoming more and more serious, strengthening the treatment of contaminated soils is conducive to the sustainable development of soil. In this study, the humus-like substances modified montmorillonite (HLS-MMT) were synthesized to remediate the Pb and Zn-contaminated soils. The application of HLS-MMT in simulated and actual contaminated soil were carried, and the long-term stability of HLS-MMT was evaluated. The results showed that the mobility, bioavailability and leachability of heavy metals (HMs) significantly decreased after remediating by HLS-MMT. Compared with MMT, the TCLP leaching ratio ( TLr ) of Pb and Zn reduced by 9.27–13.96% and 10.3–13.18%, while the DTPA effectiveness ( DEr ) Pb and Zn reduced by 9.11% and 8.76% in simulated soil, respectively. Moreover, the aging experiments proved that HLS-MMT possessed a stability to resistance the freeze-thaw cycles, wet and dry alternation, and acid rain leaching. This article provides some theoretical basis for the soil remediation .
