In this work, aspartic acid-β-cyclodextrin (ACD) was synthesized by the reaction of β-cyclodextrin with aspartic acid and epichlorohydrin, and graphene oxide-TiO 2 (GO-TiO 2 ) composite catalyst was prepared by a hydrothermal method. The complexation of ACD with New Coccine (NC) and Pb 2+ was characterized with FT-IR and XPS, respectively, the results show that ACD can simultaneously complex NC and Pb 2+ . XRD analysis and SEM images of GO-TiO 2 show that TiO 2 platelets are well distributed on both sides of the graphene oxide sheets, and display a similar XRD pattern to the pure TiO 2 nanoparticles with the typical diffraction peak of anatase phase. The effects of ACD on the photocatalytic degradation of NC and photocatalytic reduction of Pb 2+ were investigated in the single pollution system, and the synergistic effects on the simultaneous photocatalytic NC degradation and Pb 2+ reduction in the presence of ACD were also evaluated. The results showed that the presence of ACD was favorable to the acceleration of photocatalytic oxidation of NC and photocatalytic reduction of Pb 2+ in the single pollution system, and the photocatalytic reaction rate constants of NC and Pb 2+ in the presence of ACD increased 58% and 42%, respectively. For the combined pollution system, the synergistic effects on the simultaneous conversion of NC and Pb 2+ in aqueous solutions were also further enhanced. ACD enhanced photocatalytic activity was attributed to the improvement of the electron transfer and mass transfer at the GO-TiO 2 interface.

Ascribing to their significant differences in physicochemical properties , it is extremely challenging to treat complex wastewater containing more than one class of pollutants via one-step treatment. Here, we focused on disposal of complex wastewater bearing organic dye and heavy metal by using adsorptive method. Thus, by combining the advantages of polyethyleneimine (PEI), β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) as well as Fe 3 O 4 magnetic nanoparticles , a versatile β-CD and PEI bi-functionalized magnetic nanoadsorbent (Fe 3 O 4 -PEI/β-CD) with spatially separated sorption sites was successfully constructed for simultaneous capture of methyl orange (MO) and Pb(II) in complex wastewater. In this setting, β-CD cavities and positively charged N-containing groups of PEI were mainly responsible for removal of MO via host-guest inclusion and electrostatic attraction, respectively, and oxygen-bearing groups on the edge of β-CD as well as the free amino moieties in PEI acted as the active sites for Pb(II) uptake. In their individual mono-pollutant system, the adsorption processes can be better described via applying pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models. Interestingly, presence of MO in Pb(II)-MO binary system significantly promoted the uptake of Pb(II). But the coexisting Pb(II) had almost no effects on MO uptake. Such results demonstrated that both MO and Pb(II) could be simultaneously and synergistically removed by Fe 3 O 4 -PEI/β-CD through multiple mechanisms (such as electrostatic attraction, host-guest inclusion, chelating, etc.). Particularly, the excellent regeneration and stability make Fe 3 O 4 -PEI/β-CD an ideal integrative adsorbent for purification of actual wastewater contaminated by MO and Pb(II). Thus, this study provides some insights into designing a well-performed and easily recyclable adsorbent for simultaneous and synergetic capture of both organic and inorganic contaminants in complex wastewater.

The preparation of mesoporous silica materials from fly ash for the adsorption of heavy metals represents a significant approach to resource utilization. In this study, the sol-gel process was employed to synthesize amino-functionalized mesoporous silica with varying pore structure properties (denoted as MS-NH 2 -T, where T = 20 °C, 40 °C, and 90 °C) by controlling the aging temperature. The effects of adsorption conditions on the adsorption efficiency of Pb(II) were investigated, and the differences in the adsorption behavior of amino-functionalized mesoporous silica with distinct pore structures were compared and analyzed using typical adsorption isotherms, adsorption kinetics, and rate-limiting adsorption kinetics models. The results indicated variations in specific surface area (625 m 2 g −1 , 640 m 2 g −1 , and 345 m 2 g −1 ), average pore size (3 nm, 7 nm, and 15 nm), and total pore volume (0.5 cm 3 g −1 , 1.0 cm 3 g −1 , and 1.3 cm 3 g −1 ) among the mesoporous silica synthesized at different aging temperatures. Following amino modification, Pb(II) can be adsorbed through mechanisms such as pore adsorption, electrostatic attraction, and complexation. The adsorption capacities of the amino-functionalized mesoporous silica with varying pore structures were found to be 330 mg g −1 , 303 mg g −1 , and 204 mg g −1 , respectively. Furthermore, the adsorption rate constant of the MS-NH 2 -90 material, which features a larger pore size and volume, was determined to be 0.0290 and 0.0008, with a time to reach adsorption equilibrium of 60 min, outperforming the MS-NH 2 -20 and MS-NH 2 -40 materials under identical conditions (initial concentration of 300 mg L −1 ). Overall, mesoporous silica with a larger specific surface area demonstrates a higher adsorption capacity, while materials with increased pore size and pore volume exhibit faster adsorption rates. The findings of this study will assist in the selection of the most appropriate amino-functionalized mesoporous silica materials for the adsorption of Pb(II), based on whether the emphasis is on adsorption rate or capacity.

Efficient removal of Pb(II) and Cu(II) from wastewater is crucial for safeguarding environmental safety and public health. Biomass-based adsorbents with surface-specific functionality hold great promise for selective adsorption of metal cations. In this study, a novel phosphorylated chitosan-lignin (PCSL) composite is successfully synthesized via Mannich reaction. The PCSL exhibits remarkable selectivity in the adsorption of Pb(II) and Cu(II), as evidenced by Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. Furthermore, DFT analysis reveals that the incorporation of phosphate groups significantly enhances the chelation capacity of the adsorbent towards heavy metals. The PCSL demonstrates ultrafast adsorption capabilities for Pb(II) and Cu(II). Specifically, the adsorption processes reach equilibrium within 7 min and 5 min, respectively, with maximum adsorption capacities of 207.9 mg·g −1 for Pb(II) and 100.0 mg·g −1 for Cu(II). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis indicates that the adsorption mechanisms involve both chemical complexation and electrostatic attraction. Notably, the adsorbent can be recycled many times, and the spent Cu-PCSL, upon pyrolysis treatment, demonstrate remarkable catalytic activity in nitrate reduction reactions, with Faradaic efficiencies as high as 98.3 % and NH 3 yield of 4.3 mg·h −1 ·mg cat. −1 . This work not only advances the progression of biomass adsorbents but also demonstrates considerable industrial potential in mitigating water pollution and promoting sustainable development.

Adsorption techniques are crucial for removing high and trace levels of heavy metal pollutants from water, enabling effective pollution control without causing secondary contamination. Achieving “all-rounder” adsorbents with high capacity, efficiency, speed, and cost-effectiveness is challenging. Materials with structural defects, firm surface charges, and porous structures are ideal for rapid and efficient mass transfer. Herein, using a “homologous transformation” strategy, we converted abundant kaolin into 4A and Na-P1 zeolites-based porous silicate adsorbents with enhanced surface active sites and optimized adsorption pathways. Site energy analysis confirmed that these upgraded structures have high-density, high-energy adsorption sites, facilitating rapid Pb(II) removal from water. These zeolite-based adsorbents exhibit exceptional Pb(II) adsorption capacities (416.60 mg/g for 4A and 400.21 mg/g for Na-P1) and ultra-fast initial rate constants (409.84 and 617.28, which are 174.62 and 263.01 times greater than those of kaolinite; and 56.56 and 85.19 times greater than those of commercial activated carbon, respectively). DFT calculations verified strong adsorption forces for Pb(II) (adsorption energy: −0.52 eV). Removal efficiencies reached 99.75 % for 4A and 99.96 % for Na-P1 zeolite-based adsorbents, ensuring treated water is safe and supports seed germination and plant root growth. These adsorbents also perform well in the presence of interfering ions like Zn(II), Cu(II), Cd(II), and Ni(II). After 10 regeneration cycles, they retain over 73 % of their original capacity, demonstrating an optimal balance among capacity, speed, efficiency, and interference resistance, aligning with sustainable development principles of “from nature, for nature”.

New luminescent Pb(II)-coordination polymers (Pb(II)-CPs), [Pb(2-anc)2]n (1) and [Pb(3-qlc)2(H2O)2]n (2) (2-anc = 2-aminonicotinate, 3-qlc = 3-quinolinecarboxylate), were synthesized by a solvothermal reaction and characterized using microanalysis, IR spectrometry and thermogravimetric analysis. Single crystal structure analysis revealed that the Pb2+ ion displays a hemi-directed coordination geometry in 1 and a holo-directed coordination geometry in 2. The difference between the coordination spheres of 1 and 2 is related to the steric hindrance effect of the ligands. A two-dimensional (2D) corrugated layer structure is formed in 1, and the neighboring layers are further extended into a three-dimensional (3D) van der Waals crystal by π⋯π interactions between the pyridyl rings in the neighboring layers. In contrast, a one-dimensional (1D) coordination polymeric chain is formed in 2, and the adjacent chains are connected in a 2D network by hydrogen bonds. The photophysical properties of 1 and 2 were studied at ambient conditions, disclosing that 1 emits phosphorescence at 548 nm with a millisecond-scale emission lifetime and an absolute quantum yield of 2.2%; 2 emits only blue fluorescence with an absolute quantum yield of 3.5% and nanosecond-scale emission lifetime. The reasons for the difference in the photophysical nature of 1 and 2 are discussed in regards to the electron band structure and density of states analysis.

A series of sodium alginate (SA) grafted polymer composite beads were synthesized by a solution free-radical graft polymerization reaction performed in a surface crosslinked alginate bead reactor. The outer surface of the precursor droplet containing reactants including SA, acrylamide (AM), N,N′ -methylene- bis -acrylamide (MBA), ammonium persulfate (APS), sepiolite (SP) and gelatin (GE) was instantly crosslinked with Ca 2+ ions to form a capsule-like bead when it was dropped into aqueous solution of calcium chloride , and simultaneously the reactants inside the capsule-like “bead reactor” were polymerized in-situ to form new composite beads with crosslinked network structure, abundant functional groups, excellent single or co-adsorption ability and easily separable advantages. The optimal composite bead shows high adsorption capacities of 390.78, 1425.65 and 533.91 mg/g toward Methylene Blue (MB), Basic Fuchsin (BF) and Pb(II), respectively. After adsorption with the composite bead, 99.71% of MB, 99.99% of BF and 99.97% of Pb(II) were removed from original dye or Pb(II) solutions. Moreover, above 99.22% of BF and 95.33% of Pb(II) was co-removed from their binary mixture (BF concentration, 100 mg/L; Pb(II) concentration, 50 mg/L). This paper provides a simple green way to synthesize efficient and recyclable biopolymer-based adsorbents capable of purifying dyes and heavy metal ions in water.

The simultaneous realization of high adsorption efficiency, low cost, and scalable fabrication in a single adsorbent remains a significant challenge for the remediation of heavy metals-contaminated water. Here we propose a thermal-induced structural reorganization strategy to convert naturally abundant low-grade attapulgite clay into a porous silicate composite (denoted HJSiCa1.75). The composite exhibits a high uptake capacity (139.39 mg·g −1 ) and removal efficiency over 99.5% across a broad concentration range (10 mg·L −1 -200 mg·L −1 ). In real water matrices (lake water, river water, and tap water), HJSiCa1.75 outperforms commercial activated carbon 2–3 times at equivalent dosages, maintaining a removal efficiency above 99%. Site-energy distribution (SED) analysis reveals that the overall average site density of HJSiCa1.75 (0.012 g·mol/(g·kJ)) exceeds that of GHJ (0.007) and AC-CN (0.004). Thermodynamics analysis revealed that adsorption is spontaneous (ΔG° < 0) and endothermic (ΔH° = +11.95 kJ·mol −1 ). Phytotoxicity tests using aquatic plants indicate substantially reduced toxicity in treated water, as evidenced by seed germination rates and root growth comparable to those observed in clean tap water, thereby suggesting improved ecological compatibility. Pelletization and column adsorption experiments confirm the structural integrity and operational stability of the adsorbent. Mechanistic investigation identifies a synergistic interplay of electrostatic attraction, ion exchange, surface complexation, and in-situ mineralization. Collectively, this work provides a rational structural engineering route to designing high-performance heavy-metal scavengers and facilitates the value-added utilization of natural clay for scalable water purification.

In the process of industrial wastewater discharge, water pollution remains a pressing challenge, with heavy metal pollution being the most critical issue. Electrochemical sensors offer advantages such as rapid response time, ease of integration with microprocessors for on-site testing. This paper proposes the use of self-assembled polystyrene (PS) microspheres as electrode modification materials, leveraging their ordered assembly structure to reduce signal differences between electrodes from different batches, thereby preparing an electrochemical sensor with good repeatability for the determination of heavy metal ions (HMIs) Cu(II), Zn(II), and Pb(II). The experiment employed square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV) to collect the stripping currents. The designed sensor exhibited sensitivities of 0.905 μA/μM, 0.408 μA/μM, and 0.264 μA/μM, as well as limits of detection (LODs) of 0.13 μM, 0.25 μM, and 0.29 μM (S/N = 3) for Cu(II), Zn(II), and Pb(II), respectively. To enhance detection accuracy, peak current, full stripping current, and feature current were respectively input combined with machine learning (ML) algorithms to construct prediction models to evaluate the performance of the sensor. The results demonstrated that the constructed RF-Feature model significantly improved detection accuracy. It demonstrated excellent reliability, with R 2 values of 0.9952, 0.9973, and 0.9976, and root mean square error (RMSE) values of 0.6580 μM, 0.5838 μM, and 0.8164 μM, for Cu(II), Zn(II), and Pb(II), respectively. The detection range was 1 μM to 70 μM. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the sensor in practical applications was validated by detection in real wastewater samples from industrial and hospital emissions. These results were validated using an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) method.

Heavy metal pollution, especially from Pb(II) and Cd(II), poses significant risks due to its persistence and bioaccumulation potential. Traditional removal methods face challenges like high costs and secondary pollution. This study developed a novel three-dimensional porous adsorbent XBS, derived from xanthate-modifiedPhanerochaete sordidaYK-624 (a white-rot fungus), for the rapid and efficient removal of Pb(II) and Cd(II) from wastewater. Characterization showed that XBS has a sponge-like structure with abundant functional groups, significantly enhancing its adsorption capacity and kinetics. XBS achieved 96% Pb(II) and 32% Cd(II) removal within 1 min at a 0.25 g/L dose, reaching over 95% of the maximum adsorption capacity within 30 min for Pb(II) and 240 min for Cd(II). The maximum capacities were 224.72 mg/g for Pb(II) and 82.99 mg/g for Cd(II). Kinetic and thermodynamic analyses indicated a chemisorption-driven process, which was both endothermic and spontaneous. XBS exhibited high selectivity for Pb(II) over Cd(II) and other metals (Tl(I), Cu(II)), attributed to stronger covalent interactions with sulfur- and nitrogen-containing groups. Mechanistic analyses (XRD, FTIR, and XPS) revealed that removal occurs via ion exchange, complexation, and precipitation, forming stable compounds like PbS/CdS and PbCO3/CdCO3. Given its cost-effectiveness, scalability, and high efficiency, XBS represents a promising adsorbent for heavy metal remediation, particularly in Pb(II)-contaminated wastewater treatment applications.

The creation of dependable analytical platforms capable of detecting multiple heavy metal ions (HMIs) concurrently continues to be a significant challenge in environmental monitoring. This study introduces an innovative composite sensing material composed of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) modified UiO-66-NH 2 metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) for simultaneous detection of multiple HMIs. UiO-66-NH 2 , with its extensive specific surface area and three-dimensional porous framework, facilitates effective ion diffusion and target preconcentration. The interconnected CNTs network significantly enhances electron transfer kinetics and expands the electroactive surface area, as confirmed by cyclic voltammetry (CV) analyses. AuNPs can effectively amplify electrochemical reactions and enhance the sensitivity of electrochemical detection. The thoughtful design of this sensing material amalgamates the unique benefits of its constituents. This sensing material attains remarkably low limits of detection (LOD), which is 0.021 μg·L −1 for Cd 2+ and 0.008 μg·L −1 for Pb 2+ , showcasing outstanding resistance to interference in complex environments. The potential applicationsapplications of MOF-based composites in the electrochemical sensors of HMIs are expanded by this methodology.
