Pt-Shell-Protected PtZn Intermetallic Nanoclusters for Highly Efficient Propane Dehydrogenation

Liuxin Xu,Xiaolin Tai,Lei Feng,Xu Zhang,Ya Pan,Bing Tang,Ruichao Xu,Yanna Shui,Jinglin Yuan,Yue Lin,Xiaolong Zhang,Shi He,Zhihu Sun,Shiqiang Wei

Propane dehydrogenation (PDH) using platinum-based intermetallic catalysts is an important approach for the industrial production of highly value-added propylene. Nevertheless, the high temperature needed for PDH inevitably causes deactivation of the intermetallic catalysts due to phase separation or particle aggregation. Herein, we showcase that a Pt shell offers a promising solution to protect intermetallics under harsh PDH environments. Through selective removal of the surface Zn atoms, a core/shell architecture with 1–2 atomic layers of Pt coating PtZn intermetallic nanoclusters is constructed. No deactivation was observed within an 80 h long-term stability test at 580 °C on the optimal PtZn/Pt catalyst, affording an extremely low deactivation rate constant of 0.0007 h–1. Furthermore, the construction of the PtZn/Pt core/shell promotes the catalytic efficiency, with a high propylene formation rate of 124.8 mol of C3H6 gPt–1 h–1 that surpasses that of most of the Pt-based PDH catalysts reported. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the Pt shell plays dual roles in stabilizing the intermetallic core and modifying the electronic structure of the ensemble by inducing a compressive strain. This lattice strain downshifts the d-band center to a lower value of −3.02 eV and decreases propylene desorption energy to a level lower than the barrier energy of C–H breaking by 0.66 eV, resulting in enhanced coking resistance and reactivity.

Pt-Ru bimetallic nanoclusters with peroxidase-like activity for antibacterial therapy

Chuang Wei,Yijun Gao,Peifeng Li

Drug-resistant bacteria arising from antibiotic abuse infections have always been a serious threat to human health. Killing bacteria with toxic reactive oxygen species (ROS) is an ideal antibacterial method for treating drug-resistant bacterial infections. Here, we prepared Pt-Ru bimetallic nanoclusters (Pt-Ru NCs) with higher peroxidase (POD)-like activity than Pt monometallic nanoclusters. Pt-Ru can easily catalyze the decomposition of H 2 O 2 to produce ·OH, thereby catalyzing the transformation of 3,3’,5,5’-tetramethylbiphenylamine (TMB) to blue oxidized TMB (oxTMB). We utilized the POD-like activity of the Pt-Ru NCs for antibacterial therapy. The results showed that at doses of 40 μg/mL and 16 μg/mL, the Pt-Ru NCs exhibited extraordinary antibacterial activity against E . coli and S . aureus , demonstrating the enormous potential of Pt-Ru NCs as antibacterial agents.

Screening support effect of Pt/MOx for selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde

Liwei Wang,Yanfu Ma,Haitao Li,Wenhao Luo,Jian Liu

In supported metal catalysts, solid support material is of great importance for immobilizing and dispersing metal species, which can affect the catalytic performance of supported metal catalysts in terms of selectivity. Rational design of supported metal catalysts with tailored performance, in particular with controlled catalytic performance, is highly desired yet poses challenges in chemoselective hydrogenation reactions. Here, platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs) supported on a series of commercial oxides were synthesized by a facile wet impregnation and thermal treatment under the air. The catalytic performance of as-prepared catalysts was evaluated in chemoselective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde. The varied product distribution demonstrates that supports affect markedly on selectivity. Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR) spectroscopy reveals that the high selectivity towards cinnamyl alcohol could be attributed to the preferential adsorption of aldehyde group. Meanwhile, the existence of Pt δ+ could enhance activity markedly by facilitating the spillover of activated H species.

Investigation on Pt-WO3 Catalytic Interface for the Hydrodeoxygenation of Anisole

Wanru Yan,Jiating Li,Nan Ma,Zemin An,Yuanjie Xu,Lizhi Wu,Li Tan,Yu Tang

As a model compound for lignin derivatives, anisole and its conversion are crucial for the upgrading of biomass resources. Anisole molecule contains a characteristic aryl ether bond (Caryl-O-CH3); therefore, the selective cleavage of the C-O bond to efficiently produce high-value chemicals poses a significant challenge. Constructing bimetallic synergistic active sites through tuning the metal-support interface is considered an effective strategy. In this work, the WO3-promoted Pt/SiO2catalysts were investigated to enhance the performance of anisole hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) to hydrocarbons. Experimental results demonstrate that WO3significantly promotes HDO selectivity, increasing from 37.8% to 86.8% at 250 °C. Moreover, moderate doping improves low-temperature (<250 °C) HDO activity, confirming the presence of synergistic effects. In contrast, excessive WO3suppresses anisole conversion. Characterization results reveal that WO3stabilizes metallic Pt and facilitates H2dissociation. Concurrently, strong hydrogen spillover between Pt and WO3promotes oxygen vacancy formation on WO3. This transforms disordered adsorption of anisole on SiO2into directed adsorption of the anisole’s oxygen species onto WO3. This work achieves high anisole HDO selectivity through the Pt-WO3interface tuning, offering novel insights for efficient lignin conversion.

Nanoconfinement-engineered sintering-resistant Pt–high-entropy alloy clusters for dehydrogenation

Xicai Tian,Yuan Shu,Panpan Wang,Bochen Zhao,Zequn Zhang,Pengfei Zhang

Developing high-entropy alloy clusters (HEACs) with precise size-composition control and exceptional thermal stability faces persistent synthesis barriers, particularly in controlling Ostwald ripening and particle-migration-driven sintering during catalytic operation. Herein, we demonstrate a mechanochemistry-driven interfacial confinement strategy that enables the self-assembly of Pt-HEACs on MgO nanoarchitectures via dynamic adsorption between Mg(OH) 2 nanoparticles and M x (acac) y precursors. This process produces island-type Pt-HEACs/MgO heterostructures exhibiting exceptional anti-sintering properties, maintaining sub-3 nm dispersion on SiO 2 supports even after 800 ℃ H 2 treatment—a stark contrast to the severe aggregation observed in non-confined counterparts. When evaluated for propane dehydrogenation, the Pt-HEACs/MgO/SiO 2 achieves near-equilibrium propane conversion (45.9 %) and moderate catalyst life time (τ without H 2 ) 546.3 h. Operational spectra and DFT analysis reveal that higher configurational entropy in Pt-HEACs enhances electron enrichment at Pt active sites, which kinetically promotes propylene desorption and consequently suppresses carbon deposition.

Organic Field-Effect Transistors Based on Chemical-Plated Pt/Ag Electrodes

Chenyang Zhao,Xiaochen Ren

In this study, we successfully prepared silver electrodes through a silver mirror reaction. By carefully regulating the amount of ammonia complexing agent in the silver–ammonia solution, we effectively suppressed the decomposition of the plating solution while reducing the surface roughness of silver films from 9.22 nm to 4.42 nm. The electrical conductivity of our solution-processed silver layers was nearly one order of magnitude higher than that of conventional inkjet-printed silver electrodes. When applied as source-drain electrodes in organic field-effect transistors (OFETs), these electrodes enabled devices with an average mobility of 0.13 cm 2 /(V·s) and remarkably low mobility variation of only 8.7%. Furthermore, we modified the silver electrodes through chemical platinum plating, achieving a significant 0.74 eV alteration in work function, which demonstrates the great potential of chemical plating for surface functionalization in solution-processed organic electronic devices.

Cutting-Edge Technology for Early Intervention in Myocardial Infarction: Portable Fingertips-Based Immunobiosensor

Zhichao Yu,Di Wu,Yuan Gao,Yunsen Wang,Yongyi Zeng,Dianping Tang,Xiaolong Liu

Early intervention in acute myocardial infarction can minimize myocardial damage and improve patient survival. Herein, a low-cost device-free portable immunobiosensing platform for flexible monitoring of immediate myocardial infarction is reported. CuS-Pt nanofragments (CuS-Pt NFs) with high photothermal conversion efficiency (≈26.41%) are synthesized by liquid-phase polarity-mediated synthesis. The CuS NFs are loaded in situ with platinum (Pt) nanoreactors using a solvothermal reduction strategy, which is employed to enhance the efficiency of gas production. The resulting CuS-Pt nanocatalysts are encapsulated within liposomes for signal cascade amplification. Specifically, cardiac troponin I (cTn I), a target biomarker in serum, is captured on pre-modified microtiter plates and formed into a classical sandwich model. The thermo-chemically kinetically enhanced CuS-Pt reactor is released through a one-step chemical treatment and transferred to a closed gas generator. Under the excitation of a near-infrared laser emitter, the internal pressure in the gas generator device increases with time and drives the carbon quantum dot solution in the connected hose. The moving distance shows a correlation with the target concentration. This work provides a new implementation for the development of low-cost, efficient pressure immunosensors without the requirement of a readout device.

Electrochemiluminescence sensor based on resonance energy transfer for detection of chlortetracycline hydrochloride in food

Yujia Song,Li Tian,Ruidan Li,Yanjia Guo,Pengfei Han,Hanyue Jiang,Wenzhuo Wang,Jing Wang

In this work, a highly sensitive electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensor for Chlortetracycline hydrochloride (CTC) detection was constructed. The complex of g-C 3 N 4 -chitosan (g-C 3 N 4 @CS) and Pt NPs@MIL-101(Fe) were modified to the electrode. In g-C 3 N 4 -S 2 O 8 2− system, g-C 3 N 4 served as an ECL signal. Synthesized Pt NPs@MIL-101(Fe) acted as a novel coreaction promoter of the system, further enhancing the ECL signal. With the addition of CTC, the ECL signal decreased, and this quenching phenomenon was mainly because of ECL-RET and the related mechanism was studied. Under the best conditions, a strong linear relationship was observed between the change in ECL signal (ΔI) and the logarithm of CTC concentration (lgC CTC ), spanning from 5 × 10 −14 to 5 × 10 −9  mol L −1 . The linear equation was ΔI = 16,817 + 1179.4 lgC CTC with a correlation coefficient of 0.995. The method demonstrates an exceptionally low detection limit of 1.7 × 10 −14  mol L −1 (S/N = 3), making it suitable for real sample analysis.

Significantly improved Curie temperature and electrical properties of Sm-doped Pb(Ni1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbZrO3-PbTiO3 by introducing Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3

Haoran Yu,Liang Cao,Jiajia Wang,Jian Guo,Ji Zhang,Shan-Tao Zhang

Pb(Ni1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbZrO3-PbTiO3 (PNN-PZ-PT) is one of the typical relaxor-PT piezoelectric systems. In order to further improve its Curie temperature (Tc) and piezoelectric properties, nominal Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 (PMN) is introduced into 2mol% Sm-doped 0.36PNN-0.28PZ-0.36PT to form a (0.36 − x)PNN-xPMN-0.28PZ-0.36PT:0.02Sm (x = 0–0.24) quaternary solid solution. The phase, microstructure, domain structure, and electrical properties of the solid solution ceramics were investigated systematically. All the samples exhibit a single phase perovskite structure and are situated around the rhombohedral-tetragonal morphotropic phase boundary. With increasing x, the Tc increases gradually, while the piezoelectric coefficient d33 increases initially and decreases subsequently, reaching a peak value of 725 pC N−1 at around x = 0.15. In particular, this optimal composition illustrates high performance with Tc = 176 °C, planar electromechanical coupling factor kp = 0.63, remanent polarization Pr = 30 μC cm−2, and coercive field Ec = 8.9 kV cm−1. This study illustrates the viability of incorporating PMN into PNN-PZ-PT to optimize the comprehensive electrical properties, potentially offering a valuable guide for developing high performance relaxor-PT materials.

A Networked Catalytic Layer Derived from Composite Nanowires Integrated with Pt Core and Active Pt-Doped RuO2 Shell for Efficient Proton Exchange Membrane Water Electrolysis at Low Anode Loadings

Heng Zhang,Lili Liu,Liu Pei,Dongdong Wang,Xindong Wang

The deployment of ruthenium-based catalysts in low-loading anodes of proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers is hindered by their insufficient stability and limited catalyst utilization. This work presents a novel core–shell nanowire electrocatalyst (PRO@Pt) consisting of a Pt nanowire core coated with a Pt-doped RuO2 active shell. Characterization and theoretical calculations reveal that the incorporation of Pt dopants and the resulting lattice expansion elevate the electron density on Ru sites, weaken Ru–O covalency, and optimize intermediate adsorption, thereby enhancing the electrocatalytic activity and stability of RuO2 for oxygen evolution reaction. In 0.5 M H2SO4, PRO@Pt-2/18 exhibits a low overpotential of 173 mV at 10 mA cm–2. Moreover, the catalyst network constructed by the intertwined PRO@Pt nanowire bundles avoids electrical isolation and ensures efficient electron transport throughout the electrode, even at a low loading. The single cell with the low-loading reticular catalyst layer (0.11 mg cm–2) conveys an extremely low voltage of 1.72 V at 3 A cm–2 and an average degradation rate of only 5 μV h–1 in the latter stage of 1450 h of operation. This study provides a new strategy for developing efficient and durable low-loading anodes for industrial water electrolysis.

Fe–N–C Support-Enhanced Pt Catalyst for High-Performance Oxygen Reduction

Xinquan Wu,Zhen Sun,Hao Li,Xiaolei Guo,Zhen-Feng Huang,Ruijie Gao,Chengxiang Shi,Xiangwen Zhang,Lun Pan,Ji-Jun Zou

Platinum-based catalysts are highly effective for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), but their prohibitive cost and insufficient activity impede large-scale commercialization. Herein, we report a Pt@Fe-NC electrocatalyst synthesized by depositing uniform platinum nanoparticles onto an iron–nitrogen–carbon (Fe–NC) support via an ethylene glycol reduction method. The Fe–NC support, prepared from an iron (II)-1,10-phenanthroline complex precursor to ensure high iron utilization, modulates the electronic structure of the Pt nanoparticles, thereby enhancing both catalytic activity and stability. The optimized Pt@Fe-NC catalyst (13.54 wt% Pt) exhibits exceptional ORR performance in acidic media, with a half-wave potential of 0.852 V and notable stability. When integrated into a zinc-air battery, the catalyst delivered a high specific capacity of 652.66 mAh g Zn −1 . Furthermore, a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) employing this catalyst achieved a high open-circuit voltage (OCV) of 0.964 V and a peak power density of 1.722 W cm −2 , outperforming most previously reported Pt-based catalysts. This study highlights a synergistic strategy between Pt nanoparticles and metal-nitrogen-carbon (M–N–C) supports to boost ORR performance, presenting a viable path toward advanced, cost-effective catalysts for energy conversion devices like PEMFCs and zinc-air batteries. Graphical A method of preparing Fe–NC loaded Pt nanoparticle catalysts is presented. The method is used to prepare Fe–NC substrate by loading iron complexes with 1,10-phenanthroline on carbon black and then Pt nanoparticles obtained by ethylene glycol reduction method are loaded on the Fe–NC substrate. The results show that the enhanced activity of the Pt@Fe-NC catalyst is due to the modification of the electronic structure of Fe on Pt in the Fe-NC support.

Polymer-supported quaternary ammonium ionic liquid for efficient capture of Pt(IV)

Meng Cheng,Wenjing Liu,Chenxi Yang,Qian Jia,Ziyang Yang

Developing efficient materials capable of selectively extracting platinum from secondary resources represents a critical step toward addressing the global shortage of platinum resources and environmental concerns. In this study, we report the rational design and successful synthesis of a novel polymer-supported quaternary ammonium ionic liquid (CPR-BDEA) for the selective separation and recovery of platinum (Pt(IV)). CPR-BDEA exhibited an impressive maximum adsorption capacity 411.5 mg/g (pH=4) and maintained excellent selectivity for Pt(IV) even in the competitive multi-ion systems. Its practical applicability was validated by effective Pt(IV) capture from real leaching solutions derived from e-waste and spent automotive catalyst. Furthermore, CPR-BDEA exhibited excellent regenerability and still maintained a high recovery efficiency for Pt(IV) after five cycles. Finally, with the aid of various characterization technologies and density functional theory (DFT), the adsorption mechanism between CPR-BDEA and Pt(IV) was revealed detailly, including electrostatic attraction, hydrogen bonds and van der Waals between the side chain of CPR-BDEA and Pt(IV), ion exchange and other interactions. It is expected that this study would provide fundamental insights into the design and preparation of quaternary ammonium salt functionalized materials and contribute to the development of sustainable strategies for the selective separation of precious metals from secondary resources.
