Fabrication and mechanical properties of self-toughening ZrB2–SiC composites from in-situ reaction

Zhang Zhaofu,Sha Jianjun,Zu Yufei,Dai Jixiang,Liu Yingjun

Self-toughening ZrB 2 –SiC based composites are fabricated by in-situ reactive hot pressing. The effect of sintering additive content on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the composites is investigated. Microstructure observation found that the in-situ reactive hot pressing could promote the anisotropic growth of ZrB 2 grains and the formation of interlocking microstructure. Such microstructure could improve the mechanical properties, especially, for the fracture toughness. The improved mechanical properties could be attributed to the self-toughening structure related to the ZrB 2 platelets and the formed interlocking microstructure, which could trigger various toughening mechanisms such as grain pull-out, crack bridging, crack deflection, and crack branching, providing the main contribution to the high fracture toughness.

Preparation and ablation behavior of a ZrB2-SiC coating-matrix integrated C/C composite

Zhenxiao Tang,Yuanming Zhou,Ruizhi Liu,Maozhong Yi,Ke Peng

The preparation of a ZrB 2 -SiC coating-matrix integrated C/C composite was achieved by a slurry method and precursor infiltration and pyrolysis. The obtained composites consisted of a SiC outer layer, a ZrB 2 -SiC inner layer and a C/C-ZrB 2 -SiC substrate. Compared with a composite without the ZrB 2 -SiC layer, the mass ablation rates of the composite were reduced by 14.8 %, 12.0 %, and 19.4 %, and the linear ablation rates were reduced by 41.3 %, 28.2 %, and 14 %, respectively, after ablation under an oxyacetylene flame with a heat flux of 4.18 MW/m 2 for 60 s, 120 s, and 300 s. During the ablation process, the SiC outer layer played a role in reducing the heating rate and surface temperature and promoting the sintering of ZrO 2 so that the oxide layer avoided peeling off under large thermal stress. The ZrB 2 -SiC inner layer acted as an oxygen, heat and flow barrier, reducing the oxidation rate of the substrate.

Cf/(CrZrHfNbTa)C–SiC high-entropy ceramic matrix composites for potential multi-functional applications

Yang Hu,Dewei Ni,Bowen Chen,Feiyan Cai,Xuegang Zou,Fan Zhang,Yusheng Ding,Xiangyu Zhang,Shaoming Dong

In this work, C f /(CrZrHfNbTa)C–SiC high-entropy ceramic matrix composites with good load-bearing, electromagnetic shielding and ablation resistance were designed and reported for the first time. The composites were fabricated by an efficient combined processing of slurry infiltration lamination (SIL) and precursor infiltration and pyrolysis (PIP). Density and porosity of the as-fabricated composites are 2.72 g/cm 3 and 12.44 vol.%, respectively, and the flexural strength is 185 ± 13 MPa. Due to the carbon fiber reinforcement with high conductivity and strong reflection, and high-entropy (CrZrHfNbTa)C ceramic matrix with strong absorbability, the total Electromagnetic interference shielding efficiency (SE T ) of the composites with a thickness of 3 mm are as high as 88.2 dB and 90 dB respectively in X-band and Ku-band. This means that higher than 99.999999 % electromagnetic shielding is achieved at 8–18 GHz, showing excellent electromagnetic shielding performance. The C f /(CrZrHfNbTa)C–SiC composites also present excellent ablation resistance, with the linear and mass ablation rates of 0.9 µm/s and 1.82 mg/s after ablation at the heat flux of 5 MW/m 2 for 300 s (∼2450 °C). This work opens a new insight for the synergistic design of structural and functional integrated materials with load-bearing, electromagnetic shielding and ablation resistance, etc.

Joining of textured PLS-SiC ceramic with CaO-Al2O3-MgO-TiO2-SiO2 glass filler

Chuang-Tian Zhan,Jin-Yuan Wu,Kun-Heng Huang,Yun Li,Li-Xiang Wu,Sheng-Jin He,Yang-Qing Liu,Ze-Xi Zhang,Wei-Ming Guo,Jia-Xiang Xue,Hua-Tay Lin

The pressureless-sintered silicon carbide ceramic with and without surface texturing was joined with CaO-Al 2 O 3 -MgO-TiO 2 -SiO 2 glass filler. The experimental results showed that without texturing applied to SiC substrates, the shear strength of SiC joints was 40.8 ± 6.3 MPa, with failure occurring at the interlayer. Unfilled regions in the interlayer limited the shear strength of the joints. When texturing was applied to SiC substrates, SiO 2 layer was formed on the surface of substrates due to high-temperature oxidation, which subsequently promoted the wettability of filler on substrates. The textured grooves on SiC substrates could be filled with glass material during joining process. The shear strength of textured SiC joints was 69.3 ± 9.9 MPa with a mixed-mode failure when the direction of shear load was perpendicular to the texturing direction. The better wettability, larger joining area, and interlocking structure between the glass filler and substrates enhanced the shear strength of textured joints.

Novel interface enhancement strategy enables SiC fiber membrane for high-temperature gas/solid filtration

Chenpei Zhou,Dong Zou,Yutang Kang,Shasha Feng,Zhaoxiang Zhong,Weihong Xing

The high gas permeance of ceramic membranes is the most important indicator of hot-gas filtration. Ceramic membranes made of fibers show significant potential for filtering dust-laden gases owing to their high porosity and high gas permeance. A novel method is proposed for preparing a SiC fiber separation layer on a rigid ceramic support that endows the membrane with a high porosity. However, the interfacial adhesion between the support and separation layers was low as there were insufficient connection points. Therefore, a solvothermal method was proposed for the in-situ vertical growth of TiO 2 nanocords on the surface of a SiC support (SiC–TiO 2 ). Next, a SiC fiber separation layer was deposited on the SiC–TiO 2 support to improve the interfacial adherence. The fabrication parameters of the SiC fiber layer, such as the solid content of the coating slurry and sintering procedure of the separating layer, were investigated in detail. At a SiC fiber content of 6 wt%, spray-coating times of 2, and sintering temperature of 1150 °C, a complete fiber layer was successfully deposited on the rigid ceramic support. The resulting membrane had a thickness of 100 μm, porosity of 91%, average pore diameter of 6.8 μm, and gas permeance of 440 m 3 ·m −2 ·h −1 ·kPa −1 . In the filtration of dust-laden gas containing SiO 2 as simulated dust (average particle size, 0.3 μm), the rejection rate was >99.9%; further, after four cycles of filtration–backwashing, the pressure drop was <0.82 kPa. The outlet dust content was less than 0.1 mg m −3 . Moreover, this membrane exhibited superior filtration ability at 500 °C. The findings of this study can aid the fabrication of ceramic fiber membranes with a high gas permeance and high interfacial adherence for industrial applications.

SiC/Graphene Film by Laser CVD as an Implantable Sensor Material for Dopamine Detection

Cuicui Li,Yilun Cai,Jinrong Hu,Jiawei Liu,Honglian Dai,Qingfang Xu,Chitengfei Zhang,Xian Zhang,Kai Liu,Marina L. Kosinova,Takashi Goto,Rong Tu,Song Zhang

Implantable electrochemical sensor holds great promise in the real-time monitoring of dopamine (DA) to regulate body function. However, the real application of these sensors is limited by the weak current signal of DA in the human body and the poor compatibility of the on-chip microelectronic devices. In this work, a SiC/graphene composite film was fabricated using laser chemical vapor deposition (LCVD) and employed as a DA sensor. The graphene in the porous nanoforest-like SiC framework offered efficient channels for electronic transmission, leading to an enhanced electron transfer rate and consequently an increased current response for DA detection. The three-dimensional (3D) porous network also facilitated the exposure of more catalytic active sites toward DA oxidation. Besides, the wide distribution of graphene in the nanoforest-like SiC films reduced the interfacial resistance of the charge transfer. The SiC/graphene composite film exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity toward DA oxidation with a low detection limit of 0.11 μM and a high sensitivity of 0.86 μA·μM–1·cm–2. The film electrode also showed a wide linear response for DA in 0.5–78 μM, along with good selectivity, repeatability, and reproducibility. Furthermore, the cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) and live–dead assays revealed that the film is also biocompatible for biomedical applications. Therefore, the nanoforest-like SiC/graphene composite film via the CVD process enables a promising candidate for an integrated miniature DA biosensor with high detection performance.

Flexible SiC nanowire/mullite fiber composite aerogel with adjustable strength based on micromechanical design

Mingyuan Yan,Xudong Cheng,Lunlun Gong,Zhiyi Lun,Pan He,Long Shi,Chenjie Liu,Yuelei Pan

Owing to excellent high temperature resistance, high porosity and light weight, SiC aerogels possess great application prospects in thermal insulation and adsorption. However, poor mechanical properties of SiC aerogels, such as brittleness and non-bendability, hinder its application; it is still a challenge to improve and regulate the mechanical properties of SiC aerogels. Here, for the first time, we propose a micromechanical design strategy to prepare flexible SiC nanowire/mullite fiber composite aerogels (SMCAs). By optimizing the aspect ratio of the skeleton fibers to regulate the stress state of microstructures, the maximum compressive stress of that SMCAs could bear can be tuned systematically from 1.2 kPa to 1254.8 kPa, spanning 3 orders of magnitude. More importantly, thanks to its micromechanical design, SMCAs can withstand up to 80% compression deformation and up to 90° bending deformation. The present work provides a new idea for the regulation of mechanical properties of ceramic aerogels.

Electrodeposition of High-Quality Ni/SiC Composite Coatings by Using Binary Non-Ionic Surfactants

Han Rao,Weiping Li,Fuzhen Zhao,Yongfa Song,Huicong Liu,Liqun Zhu,Haining Chen

In order to increase the hardness, wear resistance and corrosion resistance of nickel-based coatings, pure nickel is often co-electrodeposited with silicon carbide (SiC) particles. However, SiC particles tend to agglomerate and precipitate in the bath, which reduces the amounts of nanoparticles and causes nonuniformity. Herein, we solve these problems by using binary non-ionic surfactants (Span 80 and Tween 60) to effectively disperse SiC particles (binary-SiC) in the bath, which suppresses nanoparticles agglomeration and leads to uniformly distributed SiC particles in the composite coatings. In comparison to the Ni/SiC coatings electrodeposited from the commonly used SDS-modified SiC, the coatings prepared with binary-SiC (Ni/binary-SiC) show finer crystallization and a smoother surface. In addition, the Ni/binary-SiC coatings exhibit higher hardness (556 Hv) and wear resistance (2.95 mg cm−2). Furthermore, higher corrosion resistance is also achieved by the Ni/binary-SiC coatings.Keywords:Ni/SiC composite coatings;co-electrodeposition;binary non-ionic surfactants;nanoparticle agglomeration;wear resistance

The N and P co-doping-induced giant negative piezoresistance behaviors of SiC nanowires

Xin Cheng,Lin Wang,Fengmei Gao,Weiyou Yang,Zhentao Du,Ding Chen,Shanliang Chen

The third-generation semiconductor silicon carbide (SiC) is identified as one of the vitally important candidate materials to serve as a functional unit that performs stably and reliably under harsh working conditions, with respect to its excellent piezoresistive effects and robust physical/chemical characteristics. In the current work, we put forward the fabrication of SiC nanowires with co-doped N and P elements, which were fabricated via the pyrolysis of a polymeric material. The as-grown nanowires have a typical diameter of ∼260 nm with a 10 surface. The measured transverse piezoresistance coefficient π[10] of the established SiC nanowires increased from 5.07 to −146.30 × 10−11 Pa−1 as the loading forces varied from 24.95 to 130.51 nN. Meanwhile, the corresponding gauge factor (GF) was calculated up to ca. −877.79, which is higher than the values for all SiC nanostructures ever reported. The mechanism concerning the giant negative piezoresistance behavior of SiC nanowire is proposed. The current exploration may pave a new avenue for the development of highly sensitive and robust pressure sensors that could survive under harsh working conditions.

Thermal conductivity and electrical insulation of epoxy composites with graphene-SiC nanowires and BaTiO3

Jing He,Hua Wang,Zheng Su,Yulan Guo,Xingyou Tian,Qiqi Qu,Yueh-Lung Lin

Graphene-SiC nanowires (GSiC nw ), the composite of multilayered graphene sheets and SiC nanowires, was prepared through a carbothermal reduction process. By means of incorporating SiC nanowires into multilayered graphene sheets (GS), the propagation of electron between graphene layers was effectively suppressed and the thermal conductivity was enhanced. However, the electrical conductivity of EP (Epoxy) composites was increased by one order of magnitude, which indicated that the separating effect of SiC nanowires on the electrical properties of GS was not ideal enough. Therefore, BaTiO 3 was introduced in EP composites. Experimental results revealed that the thermal conductivity of EP-BaTiO 3 composites was increased by 2.8 times (0.6434 W/m·K) with 0.092 vol% GSiC nw doping. Additionally, the electrical conductivity and the breakdown voltage of EP-BaTiO 3 composite decreased by 250.7% and 169.5% compared with neat EP, respectively. According to the thermal conductivity model, the thermal property of EP-BaTiO 3 composites with 0.6 vol% GSiC nw can reach 128 W/m·K.

High-performance B4C–TiB2–SiC composites with tuneable properties fabricated by reactive hot pressing

Xiaorong Zhang,Zhixiao Zhang,Yuming Liu,Aiyang Wang,Shi Tian,Weimin Wang,John Wang

In this work, we systematically studied the effects of powder characteristics (B 4 C, TiC and Si powders) on the existential form of toughening phases (SiC and TiB 2 ) as well as the overall microstructure and properties of B 4 C–TiB 2 –SiC composites fabricated by reactive hot pressing. The particle size of the TiC powder plays a largely determining role in the development of novel toughening phases, the TiB 2 –SiC composite structure, that are formed in the B 4 C matrix, while the Si particle size affects the agglomerate level of the SiC phase. The TiB 2 –SiC composite structure and SiC agglomerates enhance the fracture toughness, but decrease the flexural strength . Both the microstructure and mechanical properties of B 4 C–TiB 2 –SiC composites can be effectively tuned by regulating the combinations of the particle sizes of the starting powders. The B 4 C–TiB 2 –SiC composites demonstrate flexural strength, fracture toughness and Vickers hardness in the respective range of 567–632 MPa, 5.11–6.38 MPa m 1/2 , and 34.8–35.6 GPa.

Synergetic effect of Re alloying and SiC addition on strength and toughness of tungsten

Kejia Kang,Rong Tu,Guoqiang Luo,Jian Zhang,Jiawen Zhu,Qiang Shen,Lianmeng Zhang

In this study, Re alloying and self-generated hard phase enhancement were used to improve the strength and toughness of W. The arc-melting W-based composite with 10 wt% Re and 1 wt% SiC addition is composed of toughening W-Re matrix and ceramic particles (W 2 C and W 5 Si 3 ). This composite having high strain capacity (37.1%) at room temperature (more than 5 times of W), exhibits the excellent hardness (5.04 GPa), yield strength (0.92 GPa) and fracture strength (1.78 GPa) due to the synergetic mechanism, grain refinement, and good interfaces bonding state. The synergetic mechanism of Re and SiC addition on strength and toughness was proposed.
