Controlled synthesis of Sn-based oxides via a hydrothermal method and their visible light photocatalytic performances

Jinghui Wang,Hui Li,Sugang Meng,Xiangju Ye,Xianliang Fu,Shifu Chen

Controlled synthesis of Sn-based oxides with a different valence state is still a challenge. Here, we developed a facile hydrothermal method for selective preparation of SnO2, Sn2+ doped SnO2 (Sn2+–SnO2), and SnO/SnO2 composites, and SnO with SnCl2 as a precursor. The valence state of Sn was regulated successively from Sn4+ to Sn2+ through controlling the hydrothermal solution from an O2-rich to an O2-deficient atmosphere, which was achieved by adding H2O2 or urea into the solution. The structure, absorption, morphology, and the visible light photocatalytic performance of the products were investigated systematically. SnO2, Sn2+–SnO2, SnO/SnO2, and SnO could be prepared in a H2O2-contained, H2O, urea-contained, and N2 purged urea-contained solution, respectively. For Sn2+–SnO2, the doping amount of Sn2+ could be further tuned by varying the hydrothermal temperature, while for SnO/SnO2, the coupling amount of SnO could be controlled by the dosage of urea. Visible-light-induced photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange was achieved successfully on Sn2+–SnO2 and SnO/SnO2. However, further work is still required to improve the stability of the samples due to vulnerability of Sn2+.

Flexible Narrow Bandgap Sn–Pb Perovskite Solar Cells with 21% Efficiency Using N,N′-Carbonyldiimidazole Treatments

Jixi Zeng,Jing Wang,Jinzhao Wang,Jia Li,Jiwen Chen,Feng Wei,Jing Zhang,Weijie Song,Xi Fan

Flexible tin–lead (Sn–Pb) mixed perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are among the promising flexible photovoltaics, owing to the narrow bandgap (NBG) of Sn–Pb perovskites, flexible and wearable features, and their role as a critical component in all-perovskite tandem photovoltaics. However, the flexible Sn–Pb PSCs suffer from a low power conversion efficiency, no higher than 18.5%, along with limited stability. Herein, we reported an efficient and stable flexible NBG Sn–Pb PSC via an N,N′-carbonyldiimidazole (CDI) passivation strategy. CDI, with strong adsorption energy, preferentially binds to Sn2+ compared with oxygen (O2), thus effectively inhibiting the adsorption of O2 on perovskite surfaces. The transfer of electron density around Sn2+ dramatically decreased, thus suppressing Sn2+ oxidation. The CDI treatments endowed the Sn–Pb mixed films with fewer defects, improved crystallinity, better morphology, and matched energy-level alignment. The flexible Sn–Pb devices exhibited a high PCE of 21.02%. Besides, the devices showed enhanced stability and promoted flexibility. This work provides a pathway to visibly increase the efficiency and stability of the flexible Sn–Pb mixed photovoltaic cells.

Low-concentration and high-efficiency detection of triethylamine (TEA) based on Sn-doped WO3 gas sensors

Junsheng Wen,Boyan Fu,Leyao Bi,Jiahui Lin,Jiaxing Fu,Wenyue Tian,Chunjie Wang,Yue Wang

Recently, the monitoring of TEA has garnered significant attention, particularly concerning food safety, which could potentially lead to health risks. However, current studies on the detection of TEA using tungsten trioxide (WO 3 ) materials are suboptimal and require the exploration of effective WO 3 -based sensitive materials. This work employs a one-step solvothermal method to synthesize Sn-doped WO 3 materials with varying ratios and analyzes their selectivity and sensitivity to gases. The physicochemical properties of materials were characterized using multiple techniques including XRD, SEM, XPS, BET and Raman spectroscopy. The high response to TEA gas is successfully achieved by adjusting the doping amount of Sn 4+ (∼12 wt%). Qualitative analyses indicate that 10 wt% Sn-WO 3 exhibits superior response to TEA in all samples, showcasing a response of 94.5 at 175 °C for 100 ppm TEA, which is 5.7 times higher than that of WO 3 . Also, the related mechanisms were studied in detail. The low-intensity ratio of the (002) facet, small particle size, large specific surface area, and high concentration of oxygen vacancy defects resulting from Sn 4+ doping play pivotal roles in enhancing the response to TEA. It is expected that this work will contribute to advancements in WO 3 -based materials in the field of gas sensing.

One-pot synthesis and improved photocatalytic performance of Sn/Cl co-doped TiO2-ZnO nano-heterojunctions

Jingyi Yu,Hao Sun,Cong Zheng,Weiwei Jiang,Nan Wang,Zhiqiang Li,Sumei Wu,Hualong Tao,Tingting Yao,Hualin Wang,Shimin Liu,Chaoqian Liu,Wanyu Ding,Zhihua Zhang

Pure TiO 2 , Sn/Cl co-doped TiO2 and Sn/Cl co-doped TiO 2 -ZnO were fabricated and compared by a novel one-pot method to improve the photocatalytic performance of pure TiO2, which accomplishes the construction of heterojunctions simultaneously with doping by volatile solid solution. TG-DSC, XRD, FTIR, XPS, SEM, EDS, TEM, SAED, UV–Vis, PL and EIS were characterized to investigate the influence mechanism of Sn/Cl co-doping and ZnO content (0, 25, 50, 75, and 100 mol.%) on the thermal effect, crystal structure, morphology, composition, charge transfer behavior and photocatalytic performance of samples. Results indicate that ZnO appears and SnO2 disappears simultaneously with anatase TiO2 as the main phase by increasing ZnO content, and the morphology is changed from irregular sphere to sphere-sheet and sphere-plate correspondingly. The photocatalytic degradation efficiency first increases and then decreases, and achieves the maximum value of 73 % by SCT/Z50 which has sphere-sheet heterostructure containing more hydroxyl radicals, under 15 W weak-UV light irradiations for 3 h using methyl orange (MO) as pollutant. The excellent photocatalytic performance is attributed to the structural and morphological effects of Sn/Cl co-doping and ZnO introduction, which can increase the electron-hole separation efficiency. The optimized composition also has great potential in practical photocatalytic application due to the commercial advantage that ZnO is much cheaper than TiO2.

The surface gradient doping of Sn enables CuO high selectivity for electro-reducing CO2 to HCOOH

Mengmeng Zhang,Xu Chen,Hui Xue,Zhijia Zhang,Yang Wang,Yifang Zhang,Yida Deng,Yong Jiang

As an effective strategy to turn waste into treasure, electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction (eCO 2 RR) producing value-added chemicals such as HCOOH attracts unremitting interest. However, the practical applications are limited by poor activity and selectivity, the key is to develop economical-efficient catalysts. Herein, gradient-doped Sn on the CuO surface (Sn-CuO) was developed for eCO 2 RR in an H-cell. Typically, the main reaction pathway of *OCHO → HCOOH was obtained via in situ experiments and further verified by theoretical calculations. Furthermore, the lowest Δ G *OCHO and Δ G *OCHO − Δ G *H as well as the highest Δ G *COOH enlist Sn-CuO with sufficient proton to produce HCOOH while inhibiting CO and H 2 by-products. Finally, the synthesized Sn-CuO delivers a maximum partial current density (23.6 mA cm −2 ) at −1.3 V REH and Faradic efficiency (91.5 %) at −1.2 V RHE for HCOOH, indicating excellent activity and selectivity.

Sn modified carbon support PdCo bimetallic oxide for boosting low-temperature dehydrogenation of dodecahydro-N-ethylcarbazole

Wenhua Zhou,Xiaoxuan Li,Chao Chen,Teng Guo,Jianghao Wang,Kaige Wang,Bolong Li,Zhenyu Zhang,Jie Fu

Liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs) have garnered considerable attention and have undergone extensive studies owing to their high hydrogen storage density and ease of storage and transportation. Research has shown that carbon-supported bimetallic alloys exhibit exceptional performance as catalysts for low-temperature dehydrogenation. Nevertheless, developing high-efficiency carbon support catalysts and revealing the interaction between active metals and support remains challenging but significant. In this work, a cost-effective metal-modified activated carbon (AC) was synthesized and loaded with PdCoO active sites for low-temperature dehydrogenation of dodecahydro-N-ethylcarbazole (12H-NECZ) to produce hydrogen. The results show that: (1) Introducing tin (Sn) into the AC support to form highly dispersed PdCoO/Sn 2 -C improves the pore distribution and size of the catalyst, promoting the dispersion of active metals on the surface; (2) The interface effect between PdCoOx and Sn-C supports effectively regulates the electron transfer inside the catalyst, enhances the synergistic effect between metals, and reduces electron transfer resistance, thereby improving dehydrogenation catalytic activity. The results show that at 140 °C, 12H-NECZ was completely dehydrogenated after 8 h, with a selectivity of 92.5%, while the palladium loading was only 2.2 wt%. This study provides a suitable method for the targeted design of catalysts by altering the electronic effects of supports.

Sn nanoparticles anchored on three-dimensional N-doped graphene for fast and durable Na-ion storage

Yu Xie,Xiangdong Ma,Fei Wang,Wanru Wang,Ruiqi Li,Tingrui Li,Xiaojie Liu,Jirong Mou,Jujun Yuan,Bin Li,Xiaokang Li,Jun Liu

Tin (Sn) has been recognized as a viable anode material for sodium-ion batteries due to its non-toxic nature, affordability, and high specific capacity. Nonetheless, Sn experiences substantial volume changes during charge–discharge processes, which results in accelerated capacity degradation. Herein, a novel solvothermal method is developed to synthesize a composite of tin nanoparticles covalently bonded to nitrogen-doped three-dimensional graphene (Sn/3DNG) through stable C-Sn bonds. The design of the Sn/3DNG composite effectively mitigates the volume changes of tin during sodium insertion/extraction process by using the robust framework of 3DNG to confine and support Sn nanoparticles. The presence of C-Sn bonds prevents the tin nanoparticles from clumping together, thereby enhancing the electrode’s durability. Owing to these improvements, the Sn/3DNG anode exhibits a cyclic retention of 87.7 % after 800 cycles and maintains a substantial specific capacity of 350 mAh g -1 at 5 A g -1 . This advancement underscores the potential of Sn-based nanocomposites in advancing the next generation of rechargeable batteries.

Sn/SnO2/C Prepared by Carbothermal Reduction Method as the Anode Material for Sodium-Ion Batteries

Liu Xinyu,Li Mingzhao,Shi Chonghua,An ShuQing,Wang Jing,Yao Shaowei

SnO 2 has a high theoretical capacity when used as an anode material for sodium-ion batteries, but has poor electrical conductivity. In this work, to enhance its electrochemical performance, Sn/SnO 2 /C composites were fabricated through a facile approach. Sn/SnO 2 /C composites were obtained by mechanical grinding of SnC 2 O 4 mixed with acetylene black and subsequent heat treatment in an inert atmosphere. In this material, SnO 2 provides higher capacity, while Sn not only provides higher capacity, but also increases the conductivity of the material. Additionally, the added carbon both improves the conductivity of the material and helps to distribute the material uniformly to alleviate the volume expansion of the Sn-based material. Results indicate that Sn/SnO 2 /C-519 exhibits excellent cyclic and rate performance. This paper provides valuable references for designing simple and low-cost anode materials for sodium-ion batteries.

Study on Preparation of Sn–Er–Beta Zeolite and Its Catalysis of Glucose to Lactic Acid

Dong Wenjie,Cai Ao,Wu Sui,Qi Beimeng,Dai Zhixi

A porous Sn–Er–Beta zeolite catalyst was rapidly prepared by introducing Sn source with water bath method and Er source with solid-state ion exchange method. When adding 180 mg catalyst, 225 mg glucose and 10 mL water into a reaction kettle at 200 °C for 2 h, the yield of lactic acid can reach 71.2%. After being recycled 5 times, the lactic acid yield of the catalyst can still reach 45.3%. The physical and chemical properties of Sn–Er–Beta zeolite were characterized, and it was confirmed that the catalyst had a multi-stage pore structure, with Sn and Er elements existing in the zeolite skeleton. Among them, the increase of Lewis acidity, Brønsted acidity and special strong alkaline sites of Sn–Er–Beta zeolite caused by the introduction of Sn, and the Lewis acidic sites are further increased after the introduction of Er. The combination of Sn and Er obviously improves the catalyst’s capability to catalyze glucose and fructose to produce lactic acid. This provides an important reference value for the directional catalytic process of sugars. Graphical abstract

Understanding and manipulating the crystallization of Sn–Pb perovskites for efficient all-perovskite tandem solar cells

Yang Xuke,Ma Tianjun,Hu Haojun,Ye Wenjiang,Li Xin,Li Mingyu,Zhang Afei,Ge Ciyu,Sun Xianglang,Zhu Yongxin,Yan Shuyu,Yan Jun,Zhou Ying,Li Zhong’an,Chen Chao,Song Haisheng,Tang Jiang

All-perovskite tandem solar cells are promising as next-generation high-efficiency photovoltaic devices. However, further progress in tin-lead (Sn–Pb) mixed perovskites, which are essential as the narrow-bandgap bottom sub-cell, is hampered by unbalanced crystallization processes, leading to inhomogeneous films and reduced power conversion efficiency (PCE). Here we provide a complete understanding of the formation of Sn–Pb films, from the precursor solution to the final film. We find that the total crystallization barrier for Sn-based perovskites is limited by the desorption of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), while Pb-based perovskites experience a smaller DMSO desorption barrier. By engineering the reaction barrier in mixed films via tailoring the DMSO content, we obtain synchronous Sn–Pb perovskite crystallization and high-quality homogeneous films. On the basis of this understanding, we demonstrate single-junction Sn–Pb perovskite solar cells with a PCE of 22.88% and all-perovskite tandem devices with a certified PCE of 28.87%, fabricated by antisolvent-free methods. The unencapsulated tandem devices retain 87% of their initial PCE after about 450 h with maximum power point tracking under 1 sun illumination.

Boosting seawater desalination driven by electroreduction of CO2 to formate on bimetallic Sn/Cu polyphthalocyanine frameworks

Minzhang Li,Man Liang,Wei Wang,Beichi Luo,Yanhong Ji,Longzhang Dong,Lu Guo,Danling Tang,Guangguo Ying,Fuming Chen

Electrochemical desalination offers a promising route to address water scarcity, but current methods often face limitations in salt removal rate and capacity. This study introduces an ultrafast electrocatalytic desalination system that leverages the electrochemical reduction of CO 2 to formate (CO 2 RR) to drive efficient salt removal. The optimized bimetallic Sn/Cu-based polyphthalocyanine (Sn 2 Cu 1 PPc) exhibits exceptional CO 2 RR performance, achieving a peak FE formate of 90.3 % at −1.0 V vs. RHE and a j formate of 84.8 mA cm −2 . In-situ spectroscopic analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the incorporation of Cu-N 4 units into the Sn-based polyphthalocyanine (SnPPc) promotes CO 2 adsorption and facilitates active hydrogen provision, leading to the observed enhancement in CO 2 RR activity. Using the Sn 2 Cu 1 PPc catalyst, our system achieves a salt removal rate of 1701.3 μg cm −2 min −1 and a formate production rate of 0.79 mmol h −1 cm −2 when treating natural seawater, resulting in potable water with 99.06 % salt removal efficiency. This performance is enabled by a high current density (∼70 mA cm −2 ) during CO 2 RR, which significantly enhances ion transport across the membranes, making this one of the most effective desalination approaches reported. This work demonstrates the potential of coupling CO 2 RR with desalination for sustainable water production and CO 2 mitigation, while also advancing the design of efficient Sn-based electrocatalysts for formate production.

Integrated Sn/CNT@NC hierarchical porous gas diffusion electrode by phase inversion for electrocatalytic reduction of CO2

Shuai Fan,Zihao Fan,Huiyuan Cheng,Manman Feng,Xuemei Wu,Dongwei Pan,Fujun Cui,Gaohong He

A 3D integrated hierarchical porous N-doped Sn/CNT@N C gas diffusion electrode is proposed via phase inversion to synergistically improve electron-proton-gas transfer and efficiency of CO 2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). Hierarchical porous structure is tuned by the carbon nanotube additive during phase inversion, which integrates microporous layer and diffusion layer to decrease mass transfer resistance comparing with the 2D layer structure of commercial carbon paper . XPS results show that Sn/CNT@N C 800 contains pyridinic nitrogen and pyrrolic nitrogen with catalytic activity. EIS and LSV curves show that Sn/CNT@N C 800 is beneficial to reduce mass transfer resistance and increase current density after twice hydrophobic treatments. As a result, Sn/CNT@N C 800 shows higher CO 2 RR electrocatalytic activity. The reaction rate and Faraday efficiency of CO at 12 mA cm −2 increase by 40.2% and 40.6%, respectively compared with Sn/carbon paper. The reaction rate and Faraday efficiency of formate are also slightly higher than those of Sn/carbon paper.
