A series La-doped WO 3 /SrTiO 3 heterojunctions photocatalyst were successfully prepared using solvothermal method . The as-fabricated heterostructures composite included La-doped WO 3 fluff spheres tightly grew on the surface of SrTiO 3 cubic particles. The crystallanity, structural, morphological and optical features of the catalysts were characterized using several techniques including XRD , XPS , SEM, TEM UV−vis and HRTEM. The photocatalytic activity of the heterojunction was evaluated by the photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO) under visible-light irradiation. The influence of La doping and SrTiO 3 molar ratio on heterojunctions photocatalysts was investigated. Among the as-prepared photocatalysts, the LWS50 sample exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity , almost 100% MO were completely decomposed within 75 min under visible light irradiation (λ > 420 nm). Compared with the pure WO 3 and SrTiO 3 , the enhancement of photocatalytic activity was mainly attributed to the three-dimensional hierarchical structure and the effectively transfer and separation of photogenerated electron–hole pairs in La doped WO 3 and SrTiO 3 heterojunctions

Bimetallic MOFs-derived hierarchical WO 3 /ZnWO 4 /CoWO 4 heterostructures were prepared by electrospinning for achieving superior n-butanol-sensing property at low operating temperatures. Porous chain-like structures can gradually transformed into porous mulberry-like structures composed of various accumulated particles as increasing the additive amount of Zn/Co-ZIFs. High selectivity and stability of WO 3 -based composites to 100 ppm n-butanol can be observed at 25 °C, including the large sensitivity of 32 and the fast response/recovery times of 115/179 s. The enhanced gas-sensing performance is primarily ascribed to the increased specific surface area, plentiful polyoxometalate, and effective heterojunctions, obviously promoting surface/interface absorption behavior and electron transport process.

Hydrogenolysis of glucose and cellobiose, used as the model feedstocks, over Ni–WO3/SBA-15 catalysts has been investigated to probe the influencing factors for the conversion of cellulose to ethylene glycol (EG). The conversion of glucose and cellobiose to EG showed different dependencies on reaction temperature; a lower reaction temperature was needed for the former. Additionally, the surface atomic ratio of W to Ni on the Ni–WO3/SBA-15 catalysts was the key factor for the product distribution. Both glucose and cellobiose had their own optimum W–Ni ratio for the production of EG, and the ratio of W to Ni for glucose was slightly lower than that of cellobiose. On the other hand, the Ni–WO3/SBA-15 catalysts were thoroughly characterized by N2 adsorption–desorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), hydrogen-temperature programmed reduction (H2-TPR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results indicated that the reducibility of Ni–WO3/SBA-15 catalysts with high Ni loading was more similar to that of pure NiO. More importantly, the change of surface atomic content of Ni and W of Ni–WO3 catalysts with various Ni loadings resulted from the surface W species of the catalysts being gradually covered by Ni species with the increase of Ni loading.

WO 3 is one of the inspiring sensing materials that show high response to O 3 ; an efficient fabrication of WO 3 film with incorporation of complementary additives is essential for enhanced sensitivity. Here we report film deposition by liquid flame spraying, characterization of nanostructured WO 3 -reduced graphene oxide (rGO) composites and their gas-sensing activities to O 3 . The starting feedstock was prepared from WC l6 and rGO for pyrolysis synthesis by flame spraying. Nano-porous WO 3 -rGO films were successfully fabricated and characterized by transmission electron microscopy , field emission scanning electron microscopy , Raman spectrometry , thermal analyses and X-ray diffraction. Nanosized WO 3 grains exhibited oriented nucleation on rGO flakes whereas rGO retained intact its nano-structural features after spraying. Constrained grain growth of WO 3 of 60–70 nm in size was realized in the rGO-containing films with as compared to ~220 nm in the pure WO 3 film. The WO 3 -rGO film sensors showed quicker response to O 3 and faster recovery than rGO-free WO 3 film sensors. Addition of rGO in 1.0 wt% or 3.0 wt% in the films caused a significantly reduced effective working temperature of the film sensors from ~ 250 °C to ~ 150 °C.

A novel WO 3– x /TiO 2 film as photoanode was synthesized for photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) reduction of CO 2 into formic acid (HCOOH). The films prepared by doctor blade method were characterized with X-ray diffractometer (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The existence of oxygen vacancies in the WO 3– x was confirmed with an X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and the accurate oxygen index was determined by a modified potentiometric titrimetry method. After 3 h of photoelectrocatalytic reduction, the formic acid yield of the WO 3– x /TiO 2 film is 872 nmol/cm 2 , which is 1.83 times that of the WO 3 /TiO 2 film. The results of PEC performance demonstrate that the introduction of WO 3– x nanoparticles can improve the charge transfer performance so as to enhance the performance of PEC reduction of CO 2 into formic acid.

Although the conversion of cellulose to polyols is currently well-developed, the production of the considerably valuable ethylene glycol (EG) is still challenging. Reactions have long relied on the design of suitable catalysts to obtain a high selectivity and yield of EG. Herein, using well-shaped rectangular tungsten trioxide nanosheets as the substrate, we investigated the catalytic performances of various metal supported catalysts for the convertion of cellulose to EG. Results show that Ru/WO3 is more favorable for EG production, with the highest EG yield of 76.3% over the 1% Ru/WO3 nanosheet catalyst. Our characterizations and activity tests suggest that the embedding of Ru nanoparticles onto the WO3 nanosheets produces more W5+ active sites under the same reduction conditions (NaBH4 or H2), which act as Lewis base sites to promote the glucose retro-aldol condensation reaction. Moreover, the Ru/WO3 catalyst holds a portion of Ru in the form of amorphous RuOxδ+ phases, which could further increase the H+ released into an aqueous solution for cellulose hydrogenolysis. A possible catalytic mechanism for this hydrogenolysis process is accordingly proposed.

In our work, we have successfully synthesized WO3 nanosheets via a simple, fast, and organic additives-free hydrothermal method. The obtained products are 200–500 nm-sized with square corners and high crystallinity. A possible formation mechanism of WO3 nanosheets is discussed in this study based on the experimental results and our understanding. WO3 nanosheets modified with Pt exhibit enhanced photocatalytic activity of tetracycline compared with bare WO3 nanosheets under visible-light irradiation (λ > 420 nm). Furthermore, the effects of Pt as cocatalyst can be clearly drawn, and the degradation ratio of 2% Pt/WO3 nanosheets is over 3 times that of bare WO3 nanosheets, which is reasonable to expect the obvious Pt-dependent activity. The addition of 10 mL of iso-propanol leads to a considerable decreased degradation ratio (DR) of tetracycline (TC) on 2% Pt/WO3 photocatalysts, further indicating the ·OH radicals do exist in the process of the photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) of TC.

The flower-like WO 3 structures were successfully synthesized by a simple calcination of W 18 O 49 nanowires obtained by a microwave-assisted solvothermal method . The as-prepared products were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy , X-ray powder diffraction, transmission electron microscopy , and nitrogen adsorption and desorption measurements. The results indicated that the building blocks of the flower-like structure were intercrossing single crystalline WO 3 nanorods with diameter of about 30–40 nm and length of about 300–400 nm. The gas sensing properties of as-prepared products to NO 2 and acetone were investigated. It was found that the sensor based on WO 3 nanostructures exhibited excellent selectivity and high sensitivity toward NO 2 at optimum temperature of 90 °C, giving a response of about 42 to 40 ppb NO 2 . Significantly, operating at 300 °C, the sensor's response and recovery time to 100 ppm acetone was only 1 s and 6 s, respectively.

Developing reliable and portable sensors for detection of highly toxic mustard gas is extremely important for public security. However, gas sensors based on pristine metal oxide semiconductors often suffer from high working temperature, inferior response, and inadequate detection limit owing to their poor intrinsic conductivity and weak adsorption toward target gases, thereby hindering their wide application. Herein, hierarchical WO 3 -Bi 2 WO 6 heterostructures were fabricated as sensing materials to comprehensively improve their sensing properties to 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (2-CEES, a mustard gas simulant). The optimized sensor based on WO 3 -Bi 2 WO 6 -2 displayed short response time of 1.4 s and high sensing response (R a /R g = 63) to 50 ppm 2-CEES at 133 °C, together with an ultra-low detection limit of 10 ppb. The improvement of WO 3 -Bi 2 WO 6 -2 in sensing properties are synergistically attributed to the amount of heterojunction and surface adsorption sites, which were proved by DFT calculations and a series of characterizations. This work might pave the way for further developing heterostructure-based sensors for 2-CEES detection with superior sensing properties.

Bacterial infections pose a severe threat to human health and the living environment. Photodynamic antimicrobial strategies have attracted attention since they are not affected by the development of drug resistance by the organisms. Cuprous oxide (Cu 2 O) is a promising material for application in the photocatalytic antimicrobial field due to its excellent photo responsiveness. However, the fast recombination of photogenerated carriers and poor stability limit the application of Cu 2 O. This paper uses the advantages of the exceptional strength of copper oxide (CuO) and the photocatalytic potential of tungsten trioxide (WO 3 ) to design a photocatalytic antimicrobial WO 3 /Cu x O composite agent. The structure of the composite material reveals that CuO particles and WO 3 nanosheets are grown in-situ on octahedral Cu 2 O crystals, with the outermost layer primarily consisting of WO 3 . Simultaneously, the ternary composite structure utilizes interfacial interactions to regulate the electronic structure, which acts as the conduit for electron transfer. The killing effect of WO 3 /Cu x O on Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) after visible-light irradiation reaches 100.00%, which is 2.57 times higher than that of Cu 2 O and 34 times higher than that of WO 3 . The outstanding antimicrobial ability is attributed to the constructed stepped double Z-type heterojunction structure, which realizes multi-channel transfer of carriers and retains the carriers with superior redox capacity, increasing the quantum yield of reactive oxygen species (ROS). The ROS generated by photoexcitation of WO 3 /Cu x O is the main reason for the superior antibacterial performance. The detection results indicate that ROS oxidizes the bacterial physiological structure, resulting in noticeable depressions, wrinkles, and ruptures in Escherichia coli. Meanwhile, during the mixing and collision process between bacteria and the material, metal ions can denature protein structures, and the bacterial cell surface can be punctured or even torn. These factors collectively affect bacterial activity. This work provides effective ways and methods for designing efficient antimicrobial agents.

As a prevalent volatile organic compound (VOC), acetone plays a significant role in diverse domains, such as environmental protection, industrial production, and medical diagnosis. However, if acetone is not adequately monitored and disposed of, it can result in immeasurable adverse effects on human health and the natural environment. Therefore, it is essential to realize the highly sensitive, convenient, and efficient real-time detection of acetone. In this study, MoS2 quantum dots (QDs) were modified on flower-like WO3 nanorod structure through the hydrothermal approach to fabricate a WO3/MoS2 sensor. The sensing performance of the sensor for acetone was investigated. The results showed that the sensor had a response value of 14.96 for 30 ppm of acetone gas at optimum operating temperature (132 °C), which was 3.2 times the performance of a pure WO3 gas sensor. The response of the WO3/MoS2 sensor was reduced by only 20% under a relative humidity of 85%. Besides, the sensor still maintained a high response (11.25 for 30 ppm) under high curvature conditions (120°). Finally, the sensitization effects of MoS2 QDs, including the formation of n-n heterojunction with WO3 and the catalytic overflow of oxygen species, were discussed in detail. This study provides a valuable reference for the construction of low-temperature and high-performance gas sensors based on QD-sensitized metal oxide nanomaterials.

Tungsten trioxide (WO 3 ) is recognized as a promising anode material for asymmetric supercapacitors (ASCs), yet its low conductivity and stability as well as energy density greatly limit its development. Herein, a flexible Ce-doped WO 3 (Ce 1.5% -WO 3 ) nanowire array with rich oxygen vacancies is grown on carbon cloth by a solvothermal synthesis. The specific capacitance of Ce 1.5% -WO 3 is 493F g −1 at 4 A/g and remains 90.4 % after 5000 cycles, superior to that of WO 3 nanowire arrays (416F g −1 , 80.3 %). The improved performance mainly stems from the synergistic effects of more oxygen vacancies, higher specific surface area, wider lattice spacing, faster ion diffusion, and electron transport generated by Ce doping. As-prepared ASC device can reach an energy density of 31.7 Wh kg −1 at a power density of 700 W kg −1 . Furthermore, two flexible soft-packaged ASCs connected in series can illuminate different electronic devices. This strategy proves the great application prospect of Ce-doped WO 3 nanowire arrays flexible electrodes in supercapacitors.
