Inspired by the nature photosynthesis, fabrication of Z-scheme system is an effective strategy to enhance the photocatalytic activity, via which photogenerated electrons and holes that take part in the redox reactions can be separated spatially and temporally, while their strong redox capability can still be preserved. It is of great importance to construct good Z-scheme demo systems, and yet a considerable challenge to verify the charge transfer direction, which is vital for designing and fabricating the photocatalytic systems with high efficiency. Here ZnS@ZnO core-shell nanostructures were fabricated via simply annealing ZnS(en) 0.5 precursor, which exhibited superior activity for solar fuel production to ZnS. The Z-scheme mechanism was proposed based on the experimental results of charge transfer study. Direct intimate contact is formed at interface due to in-situ growth with common Zn cation. Specifically, ZnS X O 1–X and/or defects may be formed at the interface, which behave like a mediator in a Z-scheme system. All these account for the observed efficient separation of charge carriers and enhanced activity of photocatalytic reduction.

In this study, a novel Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst was developed by integrating g-C3N4nanoplates into ZnIn2S4microspheres. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis revealed a directional electron transfer from g-C3N4to ZnIn2S4upon heterojunction formation. Under irradiation, electrochemical tests and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy demonstrated significantly enhanced charge generation and separation efficiencies in the ZnIn2S4/g-C3N4composite, accompanied by reduced charge transfer resistance. In photocatalytic CO2reduction, the ZnIn2S4/g-C3N4composite achieved the highest CO yield, 1.92 and 5.83 times higher than those of pristine g-C3N4and ZnIn2S4, respectively, with a notable CO selectivity of 91.3% compared to H2(8.7%). The Z-scheme heterojunction mechanism, confirmed in this work, effectively preserved the strong redox capabilities of the photoinduced charge carriers, leading to superior photocatalytic performance and excellent long-term stability. This study offers valuable insights into the design and development of g-C3N4-based heterojunctions for efficient solar-driven CO2reduction.

Developing effective and robust catalysts with high gas adsorption capacities and electron-hole separation rates for direct photochemical N 2 reduction reaction is extremely crucial but remains quite challenging. Here, a novel dual Z-scheme heterostructured polyoxometalate/activated carbon/TiO 2 (Co 4 PW 9 -C-TiO 2 ) ternary composite was constructed through a well-designed two-step hydrothermal method and first applied for efficient and stable N 2 fixation under mild conditions without any precious-metal cocatalysts and organic scavengers. The rational heterostructure brings a remarkable NH 3 production rate of 399.9 µmol·h −1 ·g cat -1 ·L -1 , which significantly exceeds the corresponding binary composites, and about 9-fold and 6-fold improvement over that of discrete TiO 2 and Co 4 PW 9 , respectively. Further comprehensive characterization and analysis revealed a reasonable dual Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism and demonstrated that such superior photocatalytic performance can be ascribed to the unique structure of the ternary composite, including the improved solar energy utilization efficiency, enhanced N 2 absorption ability, facilitated photoexcited charge carrier transport/separation rate and elevated redox ability. This work provides a reasonable construction strategy to further develop excellent catalysts for photocatalytic ammonia synthesis.

We synthesized BiVO 4 mesocrystals with ordered assembly structure, and studied the structural order and the relationship between the photodegradation of Rhodamine B. Au nanoparticles (NPs) were successfully loaded onto Meso-BiVO 4 by light-assisted induction, and Cd nanoparticles were further selected to be deposited on Au nanoparticles to form Z-scheme photocatalyst Meso-BiVO 4 -Au-CdS heterostructures. We try and propose to analyze its ordered assembly structure by XRD for the first time. The results show that Meso-BiVO 4 is a mesocrystal with highly exposed (001) plane and directional assembly structure. The charge separation efficiency of all samples was studied by PL spectroscopy. The results show that the Z-scheme Meso-BiVO 4 -Au-CdS can promote the charge separation and obtain the best carrier separation efficiency. Thus, it has the best photocatalytic activity in the experiment of photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B. The main active species in the degradation process were confirmed by free radical trapping experiment, and the degradation mechanism was put forward.

Bacterial infections pose a severe threat to human health and the living environment. Photodynamic antimicrobial strategies have attracted attention since they are not affected by the development of drug resistance by the organisms. Cuprous oxide (Cu 2 O) is a promising material for application in the photocatalytic antimicrobial field due to its excellent photo responsiveness. However, the fast recombination of photogenerated carriers and poor stability limit the application of Cu 2 O. This paper uses the advantages of the exceptional strength of copper oxide (CuO) and the photocatalytic potential of tungsten trioxide (WO 3 ) to design a photocatalytic antimicrobial WO 3 /Cu x O composite agent. The structure of the composite material reveals that CuO particles and WO 3 nanosheets are grown in-situ on octahedral Cu 2 O crystals, with the outermost layer primarily consisting of WO 3 . Simultaneously, the ternary composite structure utilizes interfacial interactions to regulate the electronic structure, which acts as the conduit for electron transfer. The killing effect of WO 3 /Cu x O on Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) after visible-light irradiation reaches 100.00%, which is 2.57 times higher than that of Cu 2 O and 34 times higher than that of WO 3 . The outstanding antimicrobial ability is attributed to the constructed stepped double Z-type heterojunction structure, which realizes multi-channel transfer of carriers and retains the carriers with superior redox capacity, increasing the quantum yield of reactive oxygen species (ROS). The ROS generated by photoexcitation of WO 3 /Cu x O is the main reason for the superior antibacterial performance. The detection results indicate that ROS oxidizes the bacterial physiological structure, resulting in noticeable depressions, wrinkles, and ruptures in Escherichia coli. Meanwhile, during the mixing and collision process between bacteria and the material, metal ions can denature protein structures, and the bacterial cell surface can be punctured or even torn. These factors collectively affect bacterial activity. This work provides effective ways and methods for designing efficient antimicrobial agents.

Photocatalytic technology has been widely studied, discussed, and tested as a feasible wastewater degradation technology. The present study demonstrated the preparation of g-C 3 N 4 material using solid-state sintering method and the construction of Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 /g-C 3 N 4 heterostructure via hydrothermal method. This direct contact Z-type heterojunction improves the wide bandgap of Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 monomer, enhances its photoresponsiveness, and thus improves its photocatalytic performance. During the process of photocatalytic experiments, an environment of cold and hot fluctuations were created, and the pyroelectric effect was utilized to induce self-polarization of the material and formed an internal electric field. It improves the transport ability of electron–hole pairs and suppresses their recombination in the transport path. According to the degradation experiment results, the degradation efficiency of pyroelectric synergistic heterojunction photocatalysis reached 88.7%, which was 2.27 times that of Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 . It proves that the photocatalysis by pyroelectric synergistic heterojunction has good application prospects.

Herein, first, MIL-125 samples were synthesized via a hydrothermal method. Then, Ag species were doping on the surface of MIL-125 samples via the photolysis of silver nitrate. Finally, the Z-scheme MIL-125/Ag/BiOBr composite was synthesized via a directed liquid assembly method. The structure, morphology, and optical properties of the prepared samples were investigated via X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopic mapping, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, N2 adsorption–desorption analysis, ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, surface photovoltage analysis, transient photocurrent response analysis, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and electron spin resonance analysis. Photocatalytic experiments indicated that the photocatalytic Cr6+ reduction efficiency of MIL-125/Ag/BiOBr heterojunctions was 85.7% at pH = 6, which was approximately 5.5 and 2.2 times higher than that using BiOBr and MIL-125 alone, respectively. This performance was attributed to the intimate interfacial contact between MIL-125 and BiOBr and the doping of Ag species, which increased the transfer and separation of photogenerated carriers and inhibited the recombination of electrons and holes. Furthermore, the possible photocatalytic Cr6+ reduction mechanism of the Z-scheme MIL-125/Ag/BiOBr photocatalyst was proposed.

Molecular catalysts have attracted significant attention in photocatalytic CO 2 reduction (PCR) due to well-defined structure and exceptional catalytic selectivity. However, they are still limited by recycling challenges and inherent instability. Forming an organic-inorganic composite can address these issues and enhance PCR performance simultaneously. Herein, we developed a flower-like Z-scheme heterojunction of cobalt porphyrin ([meso-tetra(4-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin], CoTPPS) and ZnIn 2 S 4 (ZIS). The optimized ZIS@CoTPPS exhibited a superior CO evolution rate of 388.26 μmol g −1 h −1 , which is 8.96 times of pristine ZIS (43.32 μmol g −1 h −1 ). The superior PCR activity is contributed by the enhanced light absorption, and photoinduced charge separation facilitated by the Z-scheme structure and the cobalt active sites. Moreover, theoretical calculations confirm the heterojunction relies on a substantial interfacial coupling between the Zn atoms of ZIS and the sulfonic acid groups of CoTPPS through coordination assembly. This investigation affords a useful inspiration for consciously constructing novel ZIS-incorporated atomistic Z-scheme photocatalysts.

Ciprofloxacin accumulates in aqueous environment due to its non-degradability. Photocatalysis, as an economical and efficient treatment technology for organic matter, is mostly used to remove antibiotics from water environment. However, the photocatalytic performance is limited by photocatalysts, which suffer from wide band gap and severe recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes. Therefore, we developed a Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst Fe-ZIF-8@AgCl, which was synthesized by combining pre-prepared Fe-ZIF-8 with AgCl. Meanwhile, the X-ray diffractometer, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were employed to characterize the structure of Fe-ZIF-8@AgCl, and a series of photoelectric tests were conducted to demonstrate the photocatalytic properties of Fe-ZIF-8@AgCl. The results revealed that Fe-ZIF-8@AgCl had a remarkable 71.9 % removal efficiency of ciprofloxacin by photodegradation in 120 min. Fe-ZIF-8@AgCl could help reduce band gap energy, inhibit the recombination of photoelectrons and holes, lower the charge transfer resistance, and enhance the photocurrent response. Furthermore, Fe-ZIF-8@AgCl still maintained a high photocatalytic performance after 4 cycles, and ·O 2 - was detected and identified as the main photocatalytic active factor. Subsequently, the charge transfer mechanism of direct Z-scheme heterojunction was proposed, and the photocatalytic degradation pathways of ciprofloxacin were analyzed. In this study, Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst was prepared and showed great potential for efficient photodegradation of ciprofloxacin.

SnO 2 quantum dots, ranging from 10 to 30%, were combined with ZnO nanosheets to create a heterojunction photocatalyst. This composite was generated using a basic hydrothermal method, which was then followed by high-temperature calcination to enhance the photocatalytic activity of ZnO. The results showed that the synthesized SnO 2 nanoparticles with tetragonal rutile phase and ZnO nanosheets with hexagonal fibrillar zincite phase, the coupling of SnO 2 quantum dots and ZnO nanosheets improved the separation efficiency of the photogenerated carriers, and at the same time broadened the photoresponse range. Through the degradation of the organic dye Rhodamine B (RhB), the best photocatalytic activity was found at 20% amount of SnO 2 in the composite sample (SZ-2), and the degradation efficiency of RhB reached 96.5% at the light irradiation time of 100 min. In addition, an in-depth study of the photocatalytic mechanism of the constructed heterojunction by active group trapping experiments, and the results showed that •O 2 − and h + were the main active substances in this degradation system. Meanwhile, the SZ-2 photocatalyst was tested for five cycles, and the degradation efficiency of the 5th cycle was 72%. The cycle test indicates that the SZ-2 sample is highly stable and reusable. Therefore, the results showed that the prepared SnO 2 /ZnO heterojunction photocatalysts are suitable materials for degrading organic dyes.

Photoreduction of toxic Cr(VI) in wastewater to less toxic Cr(III) presents an effective approach to address the environmental issues. Nevertheless, the photocatalytic performance of these photocatalysts is severely constrained by their narrow light absorption range and the rapid recombination of photo-generated electrons and holes. Herein, DUT-67/Fe 2 O 3 heterojunction photocatalysts were prepared by a simple mechanical grinding method. The formation of DUT-67/Fe 2 O 3 heterostructures not only increased the specific surface area and light absorption range, but also improved the separation of photogenerated charge carriers. Compared to the pristine DUT-67, DUT-67/Fe 2 O 3 exhibited significantly improved photocatalytic performance in the reduction of Cr(VI), achieving a reduction efficiency of up to 94 % within 40 min. Active species trapping experiments identified that electrons served as the primary species in the photocatalytic process. Coupled with electron spin resonance and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, a comprehensive mechanism for the photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) by DUT-67/Fe 2 O 3 Z-scheme heterojunction was proposed. This work offers new insights into the underlying mechanisms involving in the interfacial charge transfer and Cr(VI) photoreduction processes.

The cooperation of heterojunction and magnetic field can effectively improve the efficiency of photocatalytic degradation of pollutants. Herein, CoFe 2 O 4 /BiFeO 3 Z-scheme heterojunctions (CFO/BFO) were applied in the magnetic field-assisted photocatalytic reaction generated by a rotating permanent magnet for the degradation of berberine hydrochloride, which achieved a degradation rate of 96.49% and showed good stability and recoverability. The active substances controlling the reaction were holes and superoxide radicals . The excellent magneto-photocatalytic performances of CoFe 2 O 4 /BiFeO 3 can be attributed to the construction of the Z-scheme heterojunction, the magnetoelectric effect produced by the synergistic combination in the magnetic field, and the driving force of the Lorentz force for photocatalysis .
