Flower–shaped ZnIn 2 S 4 made by the traditional solvothermal method has a high rate of e – –h + recombination, limiting the photocatalytic reactions and its application. To address this issue, potassium sodium tartrate was added during solvothermal synthesis process to prepare ZnIn 2 S 4 photocatalysts with excellent photocatalytic performance. When the added dosage of potassium sodium tartrate was 0.4 g, the obtained ZnIn 2 S 4 photocatalysts (ZIS–0.4) showed a sheet–like structure and exposed more active (110) facet. Multiple characterization methods indicated that ZIS–0.4 exhibited the highest separation efficiency of photogenerated e – –h + pairs and electron migration. As a result, ZIS–0.4 showed the most superior photocatalytic efficiency in reducing Cr(VI). Following 20 minutes of exposure to visible light, ZIS–0.4 achieved a reduction rate of 99.3 % for Cr (VI), while the reduction efficiency of flower–shaped ZnIn 2 S 4 prepared without potassium sodium tartrate (ZIS–0) was only 28.5 %. The pseudo–first order kinetic reaction rate constant of ZIS–0.4 (0.244 min –1 ) was 15.25 times higher than ZIS–0 (0.016 min –1 ). Electron paramagnetic resonance and radical trapping experiments have verified that the main reactive substances were e – and ·O 2 – in Cr(VI) reduction process.

The sustainable conversion from solar energy to chemical energy is realized by using photocatalytic technology to produce hydrogen and hydrogen peroxide. In this work, the construction of a direct Z-scheme heterojunction is of great significance for improving the efficiency and stability of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE) and photocatalytic hydrogen peroxide production (PHP). In this study, P-doped h-BN (PBN) nanosheets are used to support the in-situ growth of ZnIn 2 S 4 nanoflowers via wet chemical method, and sandwich-like PBN/ZnIn 2 S 4 hierarchical heterostructures are successfully synthesized. The PHE performance of PBN/ZnIn 2 S 4 (∼59.46 μmol/h) is ∼ 2.35 times than that of the original ZnIn 2 S 4 (∼25.27 μmol/h), and the PHP performance (∼122.82 μmol/L/h) is 39.37 times than that of PBN (∼3.12 μmol/L/h). The excellent photocatalytic performance of PBN/ZnIn 2 S 4 can be attributed to the following points: (1) the acceleration of the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs induced by the formation of Z-scheme heterostructure; (2) reasonable design and construction of sandwich-like PBN/ZnIn 2 S 4 hierarchical heterostructure; (3) the promotion the migration and separation of photogenerated carriers by the built-in electric field. This work provides new ideas for the development of high-efficiency PHE and PHP Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst design.

Multiplex modification is considered as one of attractive methods to achieve highly-efficient photocatalytic water splitting into hydrogen evolution performance. Herein, MoS 2 /S v -ZnIn 2 S 4 /ZnS (MS/S v -ZIS/ZS) composites were constructed by a facile in-situ engineering technique. The sulfur vacancy, Ohmic-type contact and I-type heterojunction were systematically integrated into the composites. The unique structure could not only facilitate a directional charge transfer and accelerate the charge extraction, but also enhance the charge utilization and improve the hydrogen reduction reaction dynamics. As a result, the composites exhibited a promoted hydrogen evolution rate of 9.5 mmol g −1 h −1 , which was about 3.8 times higher than that of pure ZIS. This work may extend the in-situ preparation strategy and motivate the intensive investigation of high-efficiency ZIS-based photocatalysts.

Photocatalytic technology plays a critical role in uranium extraction by converting soluble U(VI) into insoluble U(IV), underscoring the need to develop efficient catalysts for the photoreduction of U(VI) in aqueous environments. To address this challenge, researchers have developed core–shell MoO 3-X @ZnIn 2 S 4 (M@ZISn) photocatalysts, co-regulated through homometallic ion doping and heterojunction engineering, for U(VI) extraction. The M@ZIS 0.5 photocatalyst demonstrated outstanding performance, achieving a removal rate of 98.84 % and a removal capacity of 296.52 mg·g −1 within 90 min. Optical characterization revealed that its superior photocatalytic activity stems from three key factors: (1) Mo 5+ doping and heterojunction formation effectively suppressed the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, (2) the core–shell structure provided an efficient pathway for the transfer of photogenerated carriers, and (3) Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations confirmed that homometallic ion doping and heterojunction engineering optimized the semiconductor’s bandgap structure and enhanced its performance. Notably, when applied to spiked natural water samples (from the Yellow River, Salt Lake, and seawater), the M@ZIS 0.5 catalyst maintained a high removal rate of 78.82 %, demonstrating its potential for practical applications in real-world water systems.

While semiconductor photocatalysis holds great promise for solar-to‑hydrogen conversion, the intrinsic limitations of rapid charge recombination and narrow spectral response continue to impede practical implementation. Herein, this study successfully constructed a ZnIn 2 S 4 /Co 0.15 Fe 0.85 S 2 (ZIS/Co-FS) S-scheme heterojunction with photothermal enhancement effects. Cobalt (Co) doping not only induced a phase transition of FS from the marcasite phase to the pyrite phase, transforming its morphology from interlaced flakes into nanoparticles, but also adjusted the conduction band position to a more negative potential, effectively optimizing the energy band structure. Performance tests revealed that the optimal sample, ZIS/Co-FS-2%, achieved a photocatalytic hydrogen production rate of 2.2 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 , which was 7.3 times and 2.2 times higher than those of pure ZIS and undoped ZIS/FS, respectively. By combining various characterization results along with density functional theory calculations, the charge transfer pathway following the S-scheme heterojunction was further validated, suppressing the recombination of photoinduced charges. The photothermal effect raised the surface temperature of photocatalyst particles and thus significantly accelerated the reaction kinetics. This study offers a novel strategy for designing efficient metal sulfide photocatalysts through the synergistic integration of transition metal doping, heterojunction engineering, and photothermal.

Zinc indium sulfide (ZnIn 2 S 4 , ZIS), a visible-light-responsive photocatalyst, has garnered significant attention due to its facile synthesis, high stability, suitable band gap, and abundant active sites. This study innovatively constructed a CNT@Ag@ZIS tubular structure, introducing Ag mediators as electron donors at the CNT-ZIS interface. Results demonstrate that the Ag mediators establish clear interfacial contact with both hexagonal ZIS and CNT. Consequently, ZIS exhibits markedly enhanced photocurrent response and improved separation efficiency of photogenerated charge carriers. The catalyst achieved a remarkable hydrogen evolution rate of 18.44 mmol g −1 h −1 , representing an 8.7-fold enhancement over pristine ZIS. The study revealed that Ag, with its high Fermi level, facilitates interfacial electron transfer to ZIS. This induces a downshift of the p-band center (3p orbitals of S) in ZIS, simultaneously prolonging the H─S bond length and increasing the antibonding orbital occupation. This electron restructuring creates electron-rich S (2+δ)− active sites, substantially lowering the H 2 desorption energy barrier. Thus, the surface reaction kinetics of the sulfide are optimized through a regulation strategy targeting antibonding orbitals.

In this work, a novel photocatalyst of ZnIn 2 S 4 /Ni(dmgH) 2 was designed by a simple chemical precipitation method and used to enhance hydrogen evolution under visible light irradiation. Along with vigorous discharges of hydrogen bubbles, an optimal rate of 36.3 mmol/g/h was reached under UV–Vis light for hydrogen evolution, nearly 4.9 times of the one from pure ZnIn 2 S 4 . The heterojunction exhibits steady hydrogen evolution capability and owns a high apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 20.45% under the monochromatic light at 420 nm. By coupling ZnIn 2 S 4 with Ni(dmgH) 2 , an extraordinary photochromic phenomenon was detected and attributed to the active Ni-S component in situ formed between the nickel and sulfur composites under light irradiation. The emerging sulfide benefits light absorption of the system and separation of photogenerated electron and hole pairs. Besides providing a promising photocatalyst for visible light hydrogen production, the present work is hoped to inspire new trends of catalytic medium designs and investigations.

Simultaneous redox reactions on photocatalysts make it possible to use wastewater for hydrogen production . The controlled synthesis of ultrasmall metal carbides effectively enhances the photocatalytic efficiency under this system. Here, we report a new type of cocatalyst in which a three-dimensional (3-D) nitrogen-doped carbon cage (NGC) of metal–organic framework derivatives encapsulates ultrasmall MoC nanoparticles (MoC@NGC), promoting simultaneous degradation of organic pollutants and hydrogen production by ZnIn 2 S 4 (ZIS). Characterization analyses showed that MoC accelerated the separation of the photogenerated carrier and effectively reduced the overpotential of hydrogen evolution , while NGC promoted the good dispersion of MoC particles and provided sufficient sites. The MoC@NGC/ZIS composite exhibited a high hydrogen (H 2 ) evolution rate of 1012 µmol g –1 h −1 , which exceed that of ZIS loaded with platinum. In the coupled system, where the electron donor was replaced with rhodamine B (RhB), the mechanism analysis showed that RhB and the as-generated intermediates consumed holes and facilitated hydrogen evolution. In addition, we designed a combined photocatalytic anoxic and oxic sequence process to achieve the recovery of hydrogen energy during the treatment of dye wastewater. This study provides a new way for cooperation between energy development and environmental protection.

Nowadays, developing a cost-effective, easy-to-operate, and efficient signal amplification platform is of important to microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPAD) for end-use markets of point-of-care (POC) assay applications. Herein, an ultrasensitive, paper-based photoelectrochemical (PEC) bioassay platform is constructed by in situ grown ZnO/ZnIn2S4heterojunctions onto paper fibers, which acted as photoactive signal amplification probes for enhancing the sensitivity of antibodies-based diagnostic assays, for the sensitive detection of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) targets. The crystalline flake-like ZnIn2S4composited with hexagonal nanorods (NRs) morphology of ZnO is an in situ grown, at the first time, onto cellulose fibers surface supported with Au nanoparticle (Au NP) modification to improve conductivity of the device working zone. The obtained composites on paper fibers are implemented as a flexible paper-based photoelectrode to realize remarkable performance of the fabricatedμPAD, resulting from the enhanced PEC activity of heterojunctions with effective electron-hole pair separation for accelerating photoelectric conversion efficiency of the sensing process under light irradiation. Once the target AFP was introduced into the biosensing interface assistant, with a specific recognition interaction of AFP antibody, a drastically photocurrent response was generated, in view of the apparent steric effects. With the concentration increase of AFP targets, more immune conjugates could be confined onto the biosensing interface, eventually leading to the quantitative decrease of photocurrent intensity. Combined with an ingenious origami design and permitting the hydrophobic/hydrophilic conversion procedure in the bioassay process, the ultrasensitive PEC detection of AFP targets was realized. Under the optimized conditions, the level of AFP could be sensitively tracked by the preparedμPAD with a liner range from 0.1 to 100 ng mL−1and limit of detection of 0.03 ng mL−1. This work provides a great potential application for highly selective and sensitive POC testing of AFP, and finally, developments for clinical disease diagnosis.Keywords:μPAD;photoelectrochemical;alpha-fetoprotein;point-of-care assay;immunosensing

Graphical Gloves on : A ZnO/ZnS/ZnIn 2 S 4 (ZnO/ZnS/ZIS) photoanode is fabricated by simple but effective sequential ion-exchange reactions. The prepared coaxial “glove” structure photoanode facilitates protection of the inner layer of ZnO, simultaneously boosting charge separation and the oxygen evolution reaction kinetics and achieving a stable photocurrent density of 1.146 mA cm −2 at 1.2 V RHE , approximately 2-fold higher than that of pristine ZnO. Serious degradation and the short photogenerated carrier lifetime for the wide-bandgap semiconductor ZnO have become prominent issues that negatively affect photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. Herein, a novel electron transport pathway was constructed by simple but effective coaxial growth of ZnO/ZnS/ZnIn 2 S 4 heterostructure nanoarrays to increase the carrier separation efficiency. This new photoanode fulfilled the requirements of both favorable band alignment and stability, achieving a stable photocurrent density of 1.146 mA cm −2 at 1.2 V RHE , which was approximately twice that of pristine ZnO. Detailed experimental studies revealed that the improved PEC activity was due to the lattice-matching interface coherency that activated the carrier transport pathway, giving rise to an optimized interfacial electronic structure for promoted charge separation by the built-in electric field and strengthened water oxidation activity. This design may provide a new approach to fabricating various efficient lattice-matching coherent interface photoanodes for PEC water splitting.

In photocatalysis as a “green chemistry” technology, the development of efficient strategies to fabricate high-performance micro-nano photocatalysts with robust solar light utilization to deal with persistent pharmaceutical products in the wastewater system is crucially important. In order to improve the photoelectric activity, interfacial charge transfer, and reduce the recombination rate of photo-generated electron-hole pair, a Z-scheme TiO 2−x @ZnIn 2 S 4 heterojunction was prepared by hydrothermal method . The morphological structure and optical properties of the prepared catalysts were extensively characterized. Experimental results show that the rich of oxygen vacancies in TiO 2−x benefits the formation of local defect energy levels at the bottom of the CB , which can be advantageous to broaden the light absorption range. Likewise, the TiO 2−x @ZnIn 2 S 4 showed 12.4-fold and 7.70-fold higher photocatalytic performance pristine TiO 2−x and ZnIn 2 S 4 towards the degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) and nitrofurantoin (NFT) in real water matrix and solution water. Furthermore, the photo-decomposition pathway of NFT was proposed by HPLC-MS, and the Z-scheme electron transfer mechanism in TiO 2−x @ZnIn 2 S 4 heterojunction was proposed and discussed in detail. This work emphasizes a facile method for designing high-efficiency oxygen vacancy mediated titanium-based photocatalysts with excellent photoactivity in environmental remediation.

Metal sulfides have attracted extensive attention in photocatalysis , but are limited by the high combination rate of photo-induced charges due to their bulky structures. Herein, a bioinspired three-dimensional (3D) penetrating structured micro-mesoporous Z-scheme heterojunction of NiCoFe-layered double hydroxides@ZnIn 2 S 4 (NiCoFe-LDH@ZIS) with S vacancies was constructed. The NiCoFe-LDH@ZIS heterojunction was prepared by limiting the growth of ZIS through intercalating flower-like ZIS within dandelion-like LDH. The obtained NiCoFe-LDH@ZIS demonstrated a superior photocatalytic H 2 evolution (PHE) rate (113.57 mmol g −1 h −1 ) and 97.78 % conversion rate of benzylamine oxidation, simultaneously. This superior photocatalytic performance benefits from the enhanced charge separation induced by the combination of 3D penetrating micro-mesoporous structure, the introduction of S vacancies, and Z-scheme heterojunction. This dimensional-matched 3D penetrating porous heterojunction affords more abundant active sites, accelerated separation of photogenerated carriers, and reduced activation energy of H 2 evolution. This unique structure provides a feasible reference for bi-functional photocatalytic reactions.
