Novel ZnO/NiO Janus-like nanofibers for effective photocatalytic degradation

Yangxiu Liu,Jin Jia,Yan Vivian Li,Jing Hao,Kai Pan

In recent years, Janus materials have become a research hotspot in the field of materials science; however, fabricating inorganic Janus-like nanofibers (NFs) is still a challenge. Herein, we report novel ZnO/NiO Janus-like NFs with efficient photocatalytic performance via an electrospinning method followed by calcination treatment. The morphology, structure, chemical composition and crystallinity of ZnO/NiO Janus-like NFs were studied in detail via SEM, TEM, HRTEM, EDS, FT-IR, XPS and XRD, indicating that the NFs had a perfect Janus-like structure composed of ZnO and NiO. A series of photocatalytic experiments were carried out in aqueous organic dye solutions under 365 nm UV radiation for 1 h, with the degradation rate of malachite green able to reach 96%, proving that the NFs have great potential in the field of organic dye degradation. Furthermore, a reasonable catalytic mechanism for the ZnO/NiO Janus-like NFs was proposed, which was discussed from the view of electron–hole pairs and p-n junctions. In short, the method in our work is expected to become a new way of effectively preparing functional inorganic Janus-like NFs.

Carbonic Anhydrase Immobilized by ZnO Nanoparticles for Catalytic CO2 Conversion

Liu Lian,Wang Xin,Gao Zixin,Zhan Yue,Yao Mengqin,Bao Jia

Carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) has emerged as a critical strategy in combating climate change and global warming. Carbonic anhydrase (CA) exhibits exceptional potential as a biocatalyst for CCUS processes due to its remarkable ability to accelerate CO 2 hydration. In this study, CA was immobilized on ZnO nanocarriers of varying morphologies. The optimal immobilization conditions and enzymatic properties of the immobilized CA were investigated, followed by catalytic CO 2 uptake and mineralization experiments. The immobilization process resulted in several improvements: enhanced overall thermal stability, an elevated optimal reaction pH of 8.50 (compared to 8.00 for free CA), retention of 84.98% original activity after 30 days of storage at 4 °C, and preservation of 85.36% initial activity after five recycling cycles. While the affinity between immobilized CA and its substrate increased, a decrease in activity was observed. The Michaelis constant (Km) for immobilized and free CA were determined to be 17.22 mM and 34.92 mM, respectively, with corresponding catalytic efficiency (Kcat/Km) of 20.49 M −1 -S −1 and 148.91 M −1 -S −1 . The catalytic performance of immobilized CA was investigated by carrying out the CO 2 adsorption assay. Notably, the catalytic efficiency of immobilized CA in CO 2 absorption and mineralization under various conditions was significantly enhanced. Graphical

Antibacterial properties and application of Bi2Sn2O7/ZnO composite photocatalytic materials

Jingmei Li,Yuhao Ji,Baitao Xian,Jianlai Liu,Deye Qu,Deming Han

In this experiment, Bi2Sn2O7/ZnO composite photocatalytic materials were synthesized by a hydrothermal method and characterized by XRD, SEM, and EDS, etc. The prepared Bi2Sn2O7/ZnO has a nanorod structure and high phase purity. The photocatalytic antimicrobial performance of Bi2Sn2O7/ZnO against bacteria and fungi under visible light was significantly better than that of single Bi2Sn2O7 and ZnO. In particular, 1000 mg/L 1:3 Bi2Sn2O7/ZnO showed an antimicrobial rate of more than 97% against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans, which are widely present in the nature. The free radical trapping experiments were selected and the antimicrobial mechanism was investigated, and the results showed that the antimicrobial process of the Bi2Sn2O7/ZnO system was regulated by the free radicals such as ·OH, h+, and e-, which were generated by its unique photocatalytic activity. Finally, MTT cytotoxicity experiments demonstrated that the Bi₂Sn₂O₇/ZnO composite was not toxic to cells. In addition, the antimicrobial performance of Bi2Sn2O7/ZnO on real livestock wastewater and the real-life application of the prepared Bi2Sn2O7/ZnO PCL composite antibiotic film for antimicrobial treatment of freshly cut fruits' surfaces under visible light were experimentally investigated. This study provides a new idea for Bi2Sn2O7/ZnO as a photocatalytic antimicrobial agent.

Hexagonal ZnO nanorings: synthesis, formation mechanism and trimethylamine sensing properties

Chao Li,Ying Lin,Feng Li,Linghui Zhu,Dongming Sun,Liang Shen,Yu Chen,Shengping Ruan

A one-step hydrothermal method assisted by polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was developed to synthesize hexagonal ZnO nanorings. X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to characterize the as as-prepared ZnO nanorings and deduce the possible formation mechanism. The as-prepared ZnO nanorings showed the well-defined hexagonal shape with a width of 0.75–1.4 μm, a thickness of 0.17–0.33 μm and a hollow size of 0.2–1 μm. The trimethylamine (TMA) sensing performance of the hexagonal ZnO nanorings was tested. The results indicated that the hexagonal ZnO nanorings showed a high response (47 to 100 ppm TMA), fast response/recovery rate (less than 23 s and 37 s, respectively), wide linearity in a relatively wide range (1–200 ppm TMA), low detectable TMA minimum concentration (less than 5 ppm) and good selectivity to TMA. In addition, the TMA-sensing mechanism of the hexagonal ZnO nanorings was also discussed.

Spectroscopic evidence that Li doping creates shallow VZn in ZnO

Jinpeng Lv,Yuan Liu

The simultaneous introduction of shallow acceptors and elimination of donor compensation is the key issue toward achieving p-type ZnO. Herein, through accurate control of the Li dopant configuration and systematic spectroscopy characterization, we obtain direct evidence that Li doping creates isolated VZn in ZnO with a luminescence peak around 414 nm (∼3.0 eV), and at the same time, removes donors. Interestingly, the same defect emission is also created by simple H2O2 treatment and appeared in a ZnO single crystal with abundant metal vacancies, unambiguously demonstrating its shallow acceptor characteristic.

Synthesis and photocatalytic properties of lotus-rootlike Au-ZnO nanostructures

Tang Jia,Zhou Bin,Zhang Shilin,Wang Zhuang,Xiong Lei,Li Peng

Unique lotus-rootlike Au-ZnO hybrid structures were obtained by controlling the deposition of pre-synthesized Au nanocrystals onto the surfaces of as-obtained ZnO structures. ZnO with lotus-rootlike structures was first prepared through a hydrothermal process. We also investigated the effects of various Au contents on the photocatalytic activities in detail. Notably, compared to the pure ZnO component, these resulting lotus-root-like Au-ZnO nanostructures with the appropriate amounts of Au content exhibited better photocatalytic efficiency.

Preparation of Ag@Ag3PO4@ZnO ternary heterostructures for photocatalytic studies

Chao Jin,Guanglei Liu,Lianhai Zu,Yao Qin,Jinhu Yang

In this article, we report a novel Ag@Ag 3 PO 4 @ZnO ternary heterostructures synthesized through a three-step approach. Firstly, single-crystalline Ag nanorods are fabricated and served as the templates for subsequent Ag 3 PO 4 deposition. Secondly, Ag 3 PO 4 crystals are grown around Ag core nanorods through a solution co-precipitation process, leading to the Ag@Ag 3 PO 4 binary heterostructures. Finally, ZnO nanorod arrays on the surface of the Ag@Ag 3 PO 4 heterostructures are realized via a seeded growth strategy, forming the typical Ag@Ag 3 PO 4 @ZnO ternary heterostructures. The photodegradation of rhodamine B under ultraviolet–visible light irradiation indicates that the Ag@Ag 3 PO 4 @ZnO ternary heterostructures exhibit much higher activities than pure Ag 3 PO 4 and binary heterostructures of Ag@Ag 3 PO 4 . The higher photocatalytic activity of the Ag@Ag 3 PO 4 @ZnO composites may be attributed to the effective photogenerated charge separation at heterointerfaces of Ag/Ag 3 PO 4 and Ag 3 PO 4 /ZnO, and the rapid electron transport along one-dimensional Ag and ZnO nanorods.

Facile synthesis of ZnO–C nanocomposites with enhanced photocatalytic activity

Jinjuan Xue,Shuaishuai Ma,Yuming Zhou,Zewu Zhang

This manuscript presents a facile route for the preparation of ZnO–C nanocomposites using zinc citrate dihydrate as a precursor through one-step calcination under a nitrogen atmosphere. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Raman spectroscopy and ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-vis DRS). The results showed ZnO nanoparticles, 5–10 nm in size, were distributed on the carbonaceous layers to form the ZnO–C nanocomposites. The as-prepared ZnO–C nanocomposites exhibited enhanced photocatalytic activity compared to pure ZnO with respect to methylene blue (MB) degradation under UV irradiation, which was attributed to the improved separation of photogenerated electrons and holes in the presence of carbonaceous layers. In particular, the rate of degradation of methylene blue (MB) with ZnO–C(550N) as a photocatalyst was 4.15 times faster than that of using bare ZnO nanoparticles. Furthermore, the ZnO–C nanocomposites could be easily recycled without an obvious decrease in photocatalytic activity. The resulting ZnO–C nanocomposites have potential applications in photocatalysis and environmental protection.

Highly Dispersed Ag2SO4 Nanoparticles Deposited on ZnO Nanoflakes as Photocatalysts

Cao Wenrong,Chen Lifang,Qi Zhiwen

Abstract Highly dispersed silver sulfate nanoparticles deposited on ZnO nanoflakes (ASZ) were successfully prepared by a simple solvothermal method with different silver contents. The prepared 3ASZ composite shows improved photocatalytic activity for rhodamine B degradation under UV–vis light irradiation compared with pure ZnO, Ag 2 SO 4 , and commercial TiO 2 (P25). The remarkable photocatalytic activity for ASZ composite maybe due to the synergistic effects between photo-reduced Ag and SO 4 2− on the surface of ZnO nanoflakes, which promote efficient separation of electron–hole pairs. Waterborne polyurethane/NiAl-LDH/ZnO composites with high antibacterial activity

Liang Xiong,Wei-De Zhang,Qing-Shan Shi,Ai-Ping Mai

Novel waterborne polyurethane (WPU) composites based on NiAl-LDH and ZnO were successfully synthesized by in-situ polymerization. The nanostructured NiAl-LDH/ZnO was first grafted by isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), forming the NiAl-LDH/ZnO-NCO complex with ―NCO group on the surface, which promotes its homogeneous dispersion in WPU matrix. The microstructure and particle distribution of the composites were characterized. The mechanical properties and the water resistance of the composites were improved. Furthermore, the composites also exhibit significant antibacterial activity towards G(−) Escherichia coli and G(+) Staphylococcus aureus . Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Synthesis and photocatalytic performance of Ag/AgCl/ZnO tetrapod composites

Wu Meng,Yan Luting,Li Jiali,Wang Lei

Ag/AgCl is a visible-light plasmonic photocatalyst that has attracted considerable attention because of its high visible-light absorption and activity owing to the surface plasmon resonance of noble-metal nanoparticles. In this study, Ag/AgCl/ZnO tetrapod composite was prepared by introducing ZnO tetrapods into Ag/AgCl prepared by a polydopamine reduction route. Ag/AgCl was densely deposited on the three-dimensional support framework provided by the ZnO tetrapods. The framework possessed a certain degree of porosity, thereby improving the specific surface area of the Ag/AgCl/ZnO composite. The interaction of ZnO with Ag/AgCl further increased the separation and transfer of electron–hole pairs. The Ag/AgCl/ZnO composite showed excellent photocatalytic activity and good stability. Under xenon lamp irradiation for 20 min, degradation of rhodamine B reached 90%. After four recycling tests, degradation remained stable without any sign of reduction. Ag/AgCl/ZnO tetrapod composite is shown to be a kind of green photocatalyst offering high activity, good stability, and recyclability.

Efficient photocatalytic oxidation of CH4 over Ag-modified ZnO nanorods

Chunlai Zhang,Yingdong Hao,Xingbo Wang,Deng Hu,Nannan Sun,Wei Wei

Photocatalysis is a highly promising strategy for the direct conversion of inert methane (CH4). In this study, a ZnO semiconductor with a nanorod morphology (r-ZnO) was synthesized using a template-directed hydrothermal method, which was further used to prepare nAg/r-ZnO photocatalysts through impregnation and reduction. The structure, composition, and microstructure of nAg/r-ZnO were characterized using techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and UV-visible absorption spectroscopy (UV-vis). The in-depth mechanism of the photocatalytic conversion of CH4 was revealed through electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and radical capture experiments. The results showed that the introduction of Ag species promoted the separation of photoinduced electron (e−) and hole (h+) pairs, which facilitated the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Therefore, the performance of photocatalytic CH4 oxidation can be significantly enhanced. Interestingly, formaldehyde (HCHO) was generated as the primary product instead of low-value methanol (CH3OH). Through optimization of Ag loading and reaction conditions, an excellent oxygenate (CH3OOH, CH3OH, and HCHO) yield of 15 551.60 μmol g−1 h−1 with a high selectivity of 98.46% was achieved simultaneously, which has been rarely reported in previous studies.
