A novel cellulose acetate/poly (ionic liquid) composite air filter

Zhu Mengni,Cao Qiping,Liu Bingyang,Guo Haoyu,Wang Xing,Han Ying,Sun Guangwei,Li Yao,Zhou Jinghui

Abstract Global air pollution poses a serious risk to human health. Among the variety of types of pollution, inhalable particulate matter (PM 2.5) is proved to be extremely harmful. In this work, a simple method was designed to synthesize a novel air filter, which composed of cellulose acetate and poly (ionic liquids) by using the technique of macromolecular design and electrostatic spinning process. The introduction of poly (ionic liquids) effectively reduced the diameter of fibers and thus obtains nano-fibrous filters. The removal rate of PM 10 and PM 2.5 particle by the filters reached 99.65% and 97.94%, respectively. Furthermore, the filters exhibited excellent antibacterial properties against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus , and no obvious cytotoxicity was observed in vitro culturing cell. After multiple recycling, the filters still maintained excellent antimicrobial properties and fibrous morphology due to the stable covalent bonds between cellulose acetate and poly (ionic liquids). This is a novel strategy to prepare high-quality air filters, which have great potential applications in air purification. Graphic abstract We fabricated a kind of green electrospinning material with stable antibacterial properties through organic synthesis and molecular design. Preparation of Cellulose Nanoparticles from Foliage by Bio-Enzyme Methods

Zhengjie Tang,Mingwei Yang,Mingli Qiang,Xiaoping Li,Jeffrey J. Morrell,Yao Yao,Yanwei Su

There are vast reserves of foliage in nature, which is an inexhaustible precious resource. In this study, the chemical components of five foliage types (pine needles, black locust tree leaves, bamboo leaves, elm leaves and poplar leaves) were analyzed, including cellulose content, hemicellulose content, and lignin content. The bio-enzymatic method was then used to prepare cellulose nanoparticles (CNPs) from these five kinds of leaves, and the prepared CNPs were analyzed using TEM, FTIR, FESEM, and XRD. The results showed that the content of hemicellulose in bamboo leaves was the highest, and the lignin content in the other four leaves was the highest. The cellulose content in the five kinds of foliage was arranged from large to small as pine needles (20.5%), bamboo leaves (19.5%), black locust leaves (18.0%), elm leaves (17.6%), and poplar leaves (15.5%). TEM images showed that the CNPs prepared by the five kinds of foliage reached the nanometer level in width and the micrometer level in length; therefore, the CNPs prepared in this study belonged to cellulose nanofibers (CNFs). The results of FTIR and XRD showed that CNFs prepared by the enzyme treatment exhibited a typical crystalline structure of cellulose II. The degree of crystallinity (DOC) of CNFs prepared from pine needle, poplar leaves, and bamboo leaves are 78.46%, 77.39%, and 81.51%, respectively. FESEM results showed that the CNFs prepared from pine needles, poplar leaves and bamboo leaves by enzymatic method presents a three-dimensional (3D) network structure, and their widths are 31 nm, 36 nm, and 37 nm, respectively. This study provides a meaningful reference for broadening the use of foliage types and improving their added value. Keywords:foliage;cellulose nanoparticles;bio-enzyme

Raman imaging-assisted customizable assembly of MOFs on cellulose aerogel

Yuan Zhanhong,Meng Dingding,Wu Yingzhu,Tang Guangqing,Liang Ping,Xin John H.,Ye Dongdong

Because of a weak interface-bonding force between metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and substrates and the loss of customization in structural designs owing to the lack of the regulation of ion sites, MOFs tend to escape from the constructed composite template. In this study, the as-prepared 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidyl-1-oxyl (TEMPO)-oxidized algae cellulose nanofibers (TACFs) were used to chelate metal ions at controllable sites and subsequently firmly entangle the assembled MOF crystals. The distribution of ions and synthesized MOFs inside the gel was monitored using Raman imaging technology, which provided an intuitive approach for visually observing the ions and MOF distribution. Using this technology, the synthesized customizable TACFs@ZIF-67 aerogels exhibited a high specific surface area (734.7 m 2 /g), low density (6.18 mg/cm 3 ), controlled particle distribution, good underwater structural stability, and excellent adsorption of dyes. This study provides a way for solving the dispersion problem of MOFs in nanofibrous aerogels using Raman imaging technology-assisted microcosmic fixed-point design.

Dialdehyde Nanocrystalline Cellulose as Antibiotic Substitutes against Multidrug-Resistant Bacteria

Huize Luo,Hai Lan,Ruitao Cha,Xinning Yu,Pangye Gao,Pai Zhang,Chunliang Zhang,Lu Han,Xingyu Jiang

Antibiotic abuse resulted in the emergence of multidrug-resistant Gram-positive pathogens, which pose a severe threat to public health. It is urgent to develop antibiotic substitutes to kill multidrug-resistant Gram-positive pathogens effectively. Herein, the antibacterial dialdehyde nanocrystalline cellulose (DNC) was prepared and characterized. The antibacterial activity and biosafety of DNC were studied. With the increasing content of aldehyde groups, DNC exhibited high antibacterial activity against Gram-positive pathogens in vitro. DNC3 significantly reduced the amounts of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) on the skin of infected mice models, which showed low cytotoxicity, excellent skin compatibility, and no acute oral toxicity. DNC exhibited potentials as antibiotic substitutes to fight against multidrug-resistant bacteria, such as ingredients in salves to treat skin infection and other on-skin applications.

Superhydrophobic Hierarchical Structures from Self-Assembly of Cellulose-Based Nanoparticles

Xiangyu Tang,Wei Huang,Yanjun Xie,Zefang Xiao,Haigang Wang,Daxin Liang,Jian Li,Yonggui Wang

The research of using bio-based nanocellulose to construct novel structures with tailored functions has attracted wide attention over the past few years. Unlike most of the studies starting with hydrophilic nanoscaled cellulose, undecenoate cellulose esters (UCEs) with different degrees of substitution (DSs) are used in this report to construct (super)hydrophobic coatings. UCE1.9 with a DS of 1.9 is composed of spherical nanoparticles (NPs), which have an average size of 112.8 nm. A crystalline cellulose core is present within UCE1.9 according to solid-state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Self-assembly turned UCE1.9 NPs into microparticles (MPs) via a solvent-exchange process. The self-assembled UCE1.9 MPs dispersed in ethanol are well distributed on diverse substrates by spray coating to form superhydrophobic surfaces with micro/nanoscale hierarchical structures, which showed static water contact angles larger than 150° and sliding angles less than 10°. The prepared superhydrophobic surface holds its original superhydrophobicity when exposed to acidic or alkaline conditions and high temperatures. Moreover, UCE3 NPs constructed by UCE3 molecule chains with a DS of 3 tremendously enhanced the mechanical stability after addition into UCE1.9 MPs coatings, which was evaluated through sandpaper rubbing and tape peeling tests. Thus, these novel (super)hydrophobic coatings derived from sustainable cellulose are promising candidates for constructing biodegradable superhydrophobic materials.

Comparative Study on Different Modified Preparation Methods of Cellulose Nanocrystalline

Xinhui Wang,Na Wang,Baoming Xu,Yili Wang,Jinyan Lang,Junliang Lu,Guorong Chen,Heng Zhang

Different modification process routes are used to improve the modified cellulose nanocrystalline (MCNC) with higher fatty acid by esterification reaction and graft polymerization to obtain certain hydrophobic properties. Two preparation methods, product structure and surface activity, are compared and explored. Experimental results show that the modified product is still at the nanometer level and basically retains the crystal structure of the raw cellulose nanocrystalline (CNC). The energy consumption of the two preparation methods is low; however, the esterification method with co-reactant requires short reaction time, and the degree of substitution of the product is high. The modified product prepared by grafting polymerization method has a high HLB value and amphiphilicity, which can effectively reduce the surface tension of water. Therefore, it can be used as a green and environmentally friendly surface-active substance. Keywords:CNC;esterification reaction;graft copolymerization;hydrophobic modification

Nano-sized fibrils dispersed from bacterial cellulose grafted with chitosan

Xu Liu,Yang Wang,Zheng Cheng,Jie Sheng,Rendang Yang

Bacterial cellulose is an attractive material due to its outstanding biocompatibility, nanometer size and high purity, but the difficulty of dispersing has restricted its wide applications. In this study, chitosan was grafted onto bacterial cellulose by Schiff base reaction, and then obtained the nano-sized fibrils by ultrasonic dispersion process. Different concentrations of NaIO 4 with various time and temperature were applied, and the maximum grafting amount of chitosan was 12.38%. The obtained products were characterized by FTIR, XRD, SEM and TEM. From the dispersibility and stability behavior research, the suspension containing chitosan was more uniform and showed better acid and temperature stability. It can also be observed in SEM and TEM images that the bacterial cellulose were dispersed into single ones and the diameter of the isolated fibril was 30–80 nm.

Effect of Swelling Pretreatment on Properties of Cellulose-Based Hydrochar

Jianglong Liu,Shen Zhang,Caidi Jin,Shuang E,Kuichuan Sheng,Ximing Zhang

Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) has been demonstrated as an effective method for preparing hydrochar to realize efficient utilization of biomass resources. In this study, both trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) and phosphorous acid (PA) under low temperature were used as swelling solvents to disrupt the cellulose crystalline structure within 1 h with distinct physiochemical properties. After TFA and PA swelling pretreatment, by means of hydrothermal carbonization, two varieties of swollen cellulose-derived hydrochars were produced. The results showed that the TFA and PA swelling pretreatment significantly enhanced the dehydration and deoxidation of cellulose through an HTC process. The H/C value and O/C value of swelled cellulose are lower than nonswelled by more than 4% at 220 °C, which demonstrates that the dehydrogenation reaction is enhanced during the hydrothermal process of swollen cellulose. Particle size as well as microscopic arrangement of hydrochars were distinctly different due to swelling cellulose. The particle size of hydrothermal carbon microspheres increases by a swelling process at the same hydrothermal carbonazition temperature. TFA-HTC have an estimate diameter of 0.2 μm at 220 °C, which is equivalent to the size of CEL-HTC-280. This study illustrates the mechanism for hydrothermal carbonization of TFA and PA swollen cellulose and provides a novel route for directionally regulating hydrothermal carbon microspheres and developing carbon-based catalysts.

Preparation of Cellulose Films from Sustainable CO2/DBU/DMSO System

Longming Jin,Jianyun Gan,Gang Hu,Long Cai,Zaiquan Li,Lihua Zhang,Qiang Zheng,Haibo Xie

Cellulose films are regarded as sustainable materials having wide applications in food packaging, separation, etc. Their preparation substantially relies on sufficient dissolution. Herein, various celluloses adequately dissolved in a new solvent system of carbon dioxide,1, 8-diazabicyclo [5.4.0] undec-7-ene and dimethyl sulfoxide (CO2/DBU/DMSO) were made in to films using different regeneration reagents. The films regenerated from ethanol and methanol presented homogeneous and smooth surfaces, while those from 5 wt % NaOH (aq.) and 5 wt % H2SO4(aq.) showed rough surfaces, as analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The films regenerated from 5 wt % NaOH (aq.) and 5 wt % H2SO4(aq.) rendered cellulose II structures, while those regenerated from alcohols had amorphous structures as evidenced using fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) results. The films made of microcrystalline cellulose had a good light transmittance of about 90% at 800 nm with a tensile strength of 55 MPa and an elongation break of 6.5%, while those from wood pulp cellulose demonstrated satisfactory flexibility with a tensile strength of 91 MPa and an elongation break of 9.0%. This research reports a simple, environmental, and sustainable method to prepare cellulose films of good mechanical properties.Keywords:CO2;cellulose dissolution;cellulose films;regeneration

Functionalized Imidazalium Carboxylates for Enhancing Practical Applicability in Cellulose Processing

Airong Xu,Lin Chen,Jianji Wang

Developing cellulose-based products is highly important because of their low-cost, reproducibility, and biodegradability. However, extensive application for cellulose has been actually hindered due to its well-known insolubility. Herein, some 22 novel functionalized imidazalium carboxylates exhibit tremendously enhanced dissolution capacity for cellulose even without extra energy consumption and are much superior to the previously reported solvents so far. Systematic investigations reveal that the powerful dissolution capacity for cellulose mainly results from the contribution of the imidazolium skeleton cation, not replacing acidic H atoms in imidazolium skeleton by alkyl, binding more allyl in N atoms of imidazolium cation, and binding an electron-donating group in carboxylate anion. Of particular importance, porous cellulose materials with varying micromorphology, for the first time, are reported by tuning the anionic and/or cationic structures of an IL. Moreover, the regenerated cellulose material retains sufficient thermostability and chemical structure. Therefore, this investigation provides a viable strategy for practical application in cellulose conversion into valuable products even without extra heating.

Microcrystalline Cellulose Surface-Modified with Acrylamide for Reinforcement of Hydrogels

Changzhuang Bai,Xuejiao Huang,Fei Xie,Xiaopeng Xiong

In this work, microcrystalline cellulose particles (MCC, 25 μm) were modified with acrylamide under microwave irradiation. The functional groups or polyacrylamide (PAM) chains modified on the surface of the particles facilitated their even dispersion in water. So, the acrylamide-modified MCC (AM-MCC) particles were then dispersed in aqueous solution of monomer of N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMAA), which was later polymerized to prepare a poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide) (PDMAA)-based composite hydrogel. The microstructure of the composite hydrogel was carefully studied with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The mechanical properties of the composite hydrogel were investigated through compressive and tensile tests. Our results indicate great improvement in the mechanical properties upon addition of the AM-MCC particles for the composite hydrogel. The analyses suggest that the evenly distributed AM-MCC particles can act as a physical cross-linker to connect the neighboring polymer chains to strengthen the composite hydrogel, on the basis of their strong interactions, including hydrogen bonding and chain entanglements. However, over-loading (more than 5.6 wt%) of the AM-MCC would lead to aggregation of the AM-MCC particles to destroy the uniform microstructure of the composite hydrogel, resulting in a reduction of the reinforcement effect. The reinforcement effect of the AM-MCC has also been evidenced by PAM-based composite hydrogels, which were prepared in a similar way. Moreover, the recoverability, cyclic, and swelling behaviors have been measured to indicate potential applications of the composite hydrogels. Therefore, our work provides an inexpensive but active filler of AM-MCC, which can be well-dispersed in water media and is suitable to reinforce hydrogels.

Preparation and Evaluation of New Cellulose Acetylsalicylate Chiral Stationary Phase

Yang LI,Jin-Ke ZHU,Hua FENG,Lian-Jie LI,Deng-Gao JIANG

Cellulose acetylsalicylate chiral stationary phase (ACSP) was synthesized by using cellulose and o -acetylsalicylryl chloride, and its enantioseparation ability was evaluated by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Commercial Chiralcel OJ column was evaluated for comparison. The effects of mobile phase composition and double ester carbonyls of derivative on enantioseparation were investigated. The structure of the obtained derivative was characterized by infrared (IR) spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. Hexane-isopropanol (90:10–80:20, V/V , 0.1% DEA or TFA) was selected by comparison of four mobile phases, namely hexane-isopropanol, hexane-ethanol, hexane-methanol-isopropanol and hexane-methanol-dichloroethane. Seven racemates of catecholamines and amides were used to evaluate its chiral recognition ability in normal phase elution mode, and the regularity and characteristics of the novel chiral stationary phase were explored. The chromatographic results showed that cellulose ACSP exhibited high enantioseparation ability for catecholamines and some racemates with amide group due to the hydrogen-bond, dipole interaction of carbonyls of acetylsalicylate and the π-π interaction with benzene ring, and the optimum amount of diethylamine or trifluoroacetic acid was 0.1%.
