Fabrication of flower-like Ag/lignin composites and application in antibacterial fabrics

Kai Chen,Shengrong Yuan,Jinze Li,Yan Zhang,Fengfeng Chen,Dongming Qi

The bacterial infection and its transmission pose a great threat to life and health, which leads to the urgent development of efficient and broad-spectrum antibacterial agents. Herein, Ag/lignin layered nanoflower (Ag/EHL-CM-0.05) was synthesized by using biomass lignin as reducing and capping agents and silver nitrate as precursor. The study showed that the size distribution of Ag NPs was uniform distribution and about 20–40 nm. The crystal surface of Ag NPs was Ag (111) surface. The minimum inhibitory concentration of Ag/EHL-CM-0.05 against E. coli and S. aureus was all 7.8 μg/mL, which was the lowest of other Ag/lignin antibacterial materials and reached a level nearly as polycationic antibacterial agents. The antibacterial mechanism suggested that Ag/EHL-CM-0.05 could release OH and Ag + , which could cause bacterial death. Finally, Ag/EHL-CM-0.05 was sprayed onto the viscose fabrics by liquid-phase spray deposition method. It was found that the inhibition zone diameter of modified viscose fabrics against E. coli and S. aureus only dropped about 0.16 cm on average after friction treatment and 0.32 cm on average after washing treatment. This work provides a new idea for the design and synthesize of efficient, broad-spectrum, and bio-compatible antibacterial agents, which has important social, economic, and environmental significance.

Polyethyleneimine-modified alkali lignin semi-interpenetrating polymer network for oil/water separation

Zhang Kangwei,Lv Wenjun,Zhang Yuxuan,Chen Guangli,Gao Xiaofang,Huang Yanfen

Oily wastewater is produced throughout the petroleum extraction process, from drilling and oil production to collection and transportation. Such effluent comprises not only large amounts of free and emulsified oil, but also a variety of poisonous and hazardous compounds. When these compounds are released without appropriate treatment, contaminating drinking water sources via groundwater penetration, and causing irreparable damage to ecosystems and human health it is difficult to be reversed. With global petroleum demand rising and environmental standards tightening, the scientific and efficient treatment of such oily wastewater to achieve the dual objectives of ‘compliant discharge’ and ‘resource recovery’ has emerged as an urgent global challenge for both the petroleum industry and the environmental sectors worldwide. Separation of components in oily wastewater presents a pressing challenge, extending beyond mere oil-water separation to encompass the isolation of other harmful constituents. Developing an economical, environmentally sound, and highly efficient membrane remains a significant technical hurdle. This study presents a semi-interpenetrating polymer network (semi-IPN) hydrogel with oil-water separation functionality, fabricated from the renewable green resource alkanolamine (AL). Lignin was first modified using polyethyleneimine (PEI), followed by incorporation of semi-IPN polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) linear molecules, after adding SiO 2 nanoparticles, the resulting semi-IPN hydrogel exhibited remarkable superhydrophilicity (OCA = 156°) and strong chemical stability. This superhydrophilic behaviour was attributed to low surface energy and the roughness imparted by the SiO 2 nanoparticles. With a stable average efficiency of 99%, it overcomes the difficulty of attaining stable separation across various oil phases while retaining continuously high separation efficiency. Elucidate the difference of molecular structure of lignin from small-diameter bamboo

Min Wu,Lin Wang,Ren Zhang,Zhiyu Zhang,Mang Wu,Youhong Wang,Liang Zhou

Although small-diameter bamboo represents a renewable biomass resource with high accessibility, systematic investigations into the molecular architecture of its lignin constituents remain limited. In this study, DES and ball-milling methods were employed to extract lignin from small-diameter bamboo and Moso bamboo, and the lignin structures obtained via these two methods were analyzed and characterized. The results show that the DES for extracting lignin is significantly more efficient than ball-milling. DES can promote the cleavage of the β-O-4 bonds in lignin, and subsequently, the lignin undergoes a condensation reaction, thereby increasing the phenolic hydroxyl group content and elevating the S/G ratio. For instance, in comparison with ML- Bm , DL- Bm exhibits a significantly reduced β- O -4 content of only 12.7%, while the phenolic hydroxyl group content reaches a high value of 6.23 mmol/g and the S/G ratio increases from 1.3 to 2.4. Furthermore, DES-extracted lignin exhibited enhanced molecular weight accompanied by an increased polydispersity index (Đ). The molecular weight of lignin exerts a more pronounced influence on the T g than does the hydroxyl group content. This work is of great significance for optimizing the lignin extraction process and its functional utilization, providing technical support for the upgrading of the bamboo industry and the development of the biomass economy.

Engineering Fluorine-Free Superhydrophobic Wood via Lignin Nanospheres for Sustainable Surface Protection

Fei Wang,Zeping Tan,Wenhao Yi,Fuquan Xiong

Superhydrophobic coatings can effectively enhance the stability and durability of moisture-absorbing materials like wood. Yet, their poor environmental compatibility, weak mechanical durability, and limited functionality hinder further practical use. Herein, a fluorine-free superhydrophobic wood coating was constructed using lignin nanospheres via a simple spray-coating process. The hydrophobic performance of the coating shows a nonmonotonic dependence on the octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) amount. Insufficient OTS results in a sparse and adhesive surface, whereas excessive OTS buries the hierarchical structure. Under ideal conditions with a mass-to-volume ratio of 3.3 μL/mg between the OTS and lignin, the coating develops a unique hierarchical structure that demonstrates exceptional superhydrophobicity (contact angle: 163.6° ± 0.5°, rolling angle: 5.3° ± 0.2°) and self-cleaning capabilities. The superhydrophobic coating maintains structural integrity and performance stability under various mechanical damage conditions. Furthermore, the coating exhibits significant photothermal effects, maintaining consistent temperature increases across five heating/cooling cycles, demonstrating excellent thermal stability. Leveraging its superior photothermal conversion capability, the coating enables efficient active deicing and rapid detachment upon substrate inclination. This study provides an innovative approach for the high-value utilization of lignin and the development of green, multifunctional, superhydrophobic coatings.

Dual effects of lignin derivatives produced by hydrothermal pretreatment on cellulase hydrolysis

Nianjie Feng,Xin Liu,Qiao Cheng,Xu Yang,Xiaotian Zhu,Yongming Xu,Jinchu Yang,Qian Wu

Efficient enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass is crucial for the development of non-food biofuels, but the efficiency is often hindered by the inhibitory interactions between cellulase and lignin. In this study, pseudo-lignin (PL) and lignin-like substances (LL) were extracted from hydrothermal pretreated residues and liquid, respectively, and the interactions between these lignin derivatives and cellulase were thoroughly studied. The results showed that PL had extremely strong hydrophilicity, which significantly increased the α-helix content of cellulase, thereby facilitating the improvement of enzymatic hydrolysis. In contrast, LL exhibited inhibitory effects on cellulase activity under hydrophobic interactions. From this, it can be seen that PL is beneficial for enzymatic hydrolysis and is not affected by the pretreatment severity and raw materials. This new perspective will provide a new insight for the combination of hydrothermal pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis technology.

Lignin-based carbon dots with adjustable singlet oxygen production for antibacterial application

Jiangze Wang,Li Li,Jianglei Sun,Yuxi Shi,Kaixuan Duan,Di An,Ya Zhou,Tong Mu,Die Hu,Tingxin Qian,Chao Liu,Chao Deng,Huining Xiao,Yuqian Liu

Bacterial resistance arising from antibiotic misuse necessitates the development of effective non-antibiotic antimicrobial agents. Herein, we report the synthesis of nitrogen-doped lignin-based carbon quantum dots (N,L-CQDs) with precisely adjustable singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) production efficiency for photodynamic antibacterial therapy. A one-pot hydrothermal method using alkali lignin and ethylenediamine was employed to fabricate a series of N,L-CQDs (N,L-CQDs 1–4 ) with controlled nitrogen-doping levels. Comprehensive characterization reveals that nitrogen-doping enhances graphitization, modifies surface states, and creates in-gap emission centers, leading to tunable optical properties. Crucially, the 1 O 2 quantum yield (QY) was found to be directly dependent on the doping degree, with an optimal value of 82.61%, ranking the top among the reported for carbon-based photosensitizers. Theoretical calculations attribute the maximal 1 O 2 QY to a minimized singlet-triplet energy gap (Δ E ST  = 0.27 eV), which facilitates intersystem crossing (ISC). The optimized N,L-CQDs 3 demonstrate potent, light-activated bactericidal activity against both Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) via 1 O 2 -mediated oxidative damage. Furthermore, when incorporated into a hydrogel patch, N,L-CQDs 3 significantly accelerated the healing of infected full-thickness wounds in a murine model by eliminating bacteria, modulating inflammatory cytokines, and promoting collagen deposition. This study not only establishes a strategy for tuning the photodynamic efficacy of biomass-derived carbon dots but also underscores their significant potential as low-cost and efficient antibacterial agents for translational wound care.

Innovative production of lignin nanoparticles using deep eutectic solvents for multifunctional nanocomposites

Tong Luo,Chao Wang,Xingxiang Ji,Guihua Yang,Jiachuan Chen,Chang Geun Yoo,Srinivas Janaswamy,Gaojin Lyu

A green and simple lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) production strategy was developed using deep eutectic solvents (DES). The LNPs were formed with corncob alkali lignin by sequential DES dissolution and self-assembling process. Uniform size and spherical shape of LNPs were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), zeta potential analyzer and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Less than 100 nm of LNPs were formed, and these particles were preserved without significant size-increase or precipitation within 30 days. The nanocomposite films prepared by incorporating the LNPs into biodegradable poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) matrix display good mechanical properties (tensile strength of 82.5 MPa and breaking strain of 103.3%), excellent UV-blocking (100% shielding of the UV spectrum region), strong hydrophobicity (static contact angle of 117.0°) and relatively high thermal stability (the maximum thermal weight loss temperature increased by 40 °C). Overall, this study not only facilitates the advancement of lignin-based nanotechnology by DES but also paves the way for the PVA polymer composites as potential food and medical packaging materials .

Dyeing of Silk through Iron Ion-Induced Formation of Hydrophobic Lignin Coatings

Ying Ma,Qinfu Lu,Shanshan Lv

There is a continuous demand for a specific type of Chinese silk fabric, which is one of China’s national intangible cultural heritage items called Xiang-Yun-Sha. Xiang-Yun-Sha is silk fabric dyed using the vegetable dyes from a yam and the mud from the Pearl Delta River. The ingenious and sophisticated dyeing process inspires us to explore new dyes for silk. Through learning from the traditional mud dyeing process of Xiang-Yun-Sha, especially the contents of the mud, lignin and iron species are recognized as key factors. Yet little attention has been dedicated to lignin as a dye despite its wide applications. In this study, the feasibility of using lignin to dye silk is investigated using sodium lignosulfonate and alkaline lignin as model systems. Thanks to their advantageous polyphenolic features, such as stacking tendency and ability to form stable complexes with iron ions, lignin-related compounds show excellent performance in serving as dyes by themselves, as well as protective coatings for other dyes; the dyed silk fabric could inherit anti-ultraviolet property from lignin. Considering that iron is inexpensive and that leftover lignin is a vastly underutilized biomass resource, this study offers a promising strategy to exploit the enormous potential of these naturally occurring materials by developing high value-added products.

The effect of water content on lignin solubilization in deep eutectic solvents

Yuling Zhang,Hongwei Ren,Hasmerya Maarof,Syarah Mat Udin,Yize Liu,Meiyu Li,Hajar Alias,Erhong Duan

Highly efficient, reversible and green dissolution of lignin is still a challenge, which hinders its wide scale-up applications. In this study, amino acid-polyol deep eutectic solvents (DESs) by employing l -arginine ( l -Arg) and l -proline ( l -Pro) as HBA and ethylene glycol (EG) and glycerol (Gly) as HBD were prepared as well as applied for dealkaline lignin (DAL) dissolution, to explore the efficient system for lignin dissolution and unveil the solubilization mechanism. The mostly used choline chloride (ChCl) based DESs were also evaluated as controlled groups. It was found that the higher value of α (hydrogen-bond donating ability) of DESs was conducive for DAL dissolution, due to the high content of β-O-4 bond in DAL. Among all the investigated DESs at water content of 2 wt%, ChCl/LA with the highest value of α (2.35) presented the best lignin dissolving ability (29.09 wt%). The effects of water content on the lignin dissolving ability of hydrated DESs were tested and discussed detailly, from a microcosmic perspective by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H NMR), solvatochromic parameters and quantum chemistry calculations. It was remarkable to find that added water greatly improved the mass transfer and activated the reaction sites in both l -Pro and l -Arg based DESs, thus enhancing or maintaining the lignin solubilities at high water concentrations. The hydrated l -Arg/EG DESs allowed a solubility enhancement of 3.49 and 2.16 times at 70 and 90 wt% water concentration, compared to l -Arg/EG/2 wt%H 2 O at 60 °C, which was environmentally friendly and economically attractive. However, the addition of water was a negative factor for ChCl based DESs, because water preferred to interact with Cl − with strong electronegativity, resulting in stronger interaction energy between hydrogen bond donors (HBD) and Ch + . This work provided a bridge connecting the microstructure and dissolving behavior of hydrated DESs, indicating that the addition of water could make DESs more versatile and flexible, thus boosting various potential applications such as gas capture, the dissolution and delivery of medicine.

Green fabrication of lignin nanoparticles/chitosan films for refrigerated fish preservation application

Wei Zhang,Pei Gao,Qixing Jiang,Wenshui Xia

Maximizing the waste valorization of renewable resources to develop biocomposite materials is highly desirable regarding environmental sustainability and food chain security. Herein, lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) obtained using deep eutectic solvent (DES) by anti-solvent strategy were employed as nanofillers in the chitosan matrix to fabricate novel bioactive packaging films. The results showed that adding LNPs reduced the swelling degree and water vapor transmittance of chitosan films. Upon introduction of LNPs content, the tensile strength of the composite films significantly increased by about 40%, whereas the elongation at break showed an opposite trend. When the content of LNPs was 10 wt %, the UV shielding and free radical scavenging ability of the composite films reached the maximum point. However, the diameter of the inhibition zone only increased at the addition of 1 wt%. Furthermore, the refrigerated (4 ± 1 °C) grass fish wrapped with composite films revealed better quality and the shelf life was extended to 10 days. Therefore, nanocomposite films provide an attractive and promising pathway for high value-added commercial utilization of lignin and chitosan for food packaging applications.

Lignin dissolution and lignocellulose pretreatment by carboxylic acid based deep eutectic solvents

Haitao Yu,Zhimin Xue,Ruifen Shi,Fengyi Zhou,Tiancheng Mu

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) composed by carboxylic acids and quaternary ammonium salts are potential candidate for lignocellulose dissolution and pretreatment . To both explore the most efficient DESs for lignocellulose dissolution and pretreatment as well as unveil the process mechanism, DESs composed by carboxylic acids as the hydrogen bond donors (HBDs) and quaternary ammonium salts as the hydrogen bond acceptors (HBAs) were prepared and further applied for kraft lignin (KL) dissolution as well as poplar and pine pretreatment. We found DES composed by lactic acid (LA) and allyltrimethylammonium chloride (ATMAC) with mole ratio of 2:1 is high-efficient for the dissolution of KL. In addition, 70% poplar lignin and 82% pine lignin could be removed at 120 ℃ for 6 h with a solid-to-liquid ratio of 1:10. Furthermore, the -OH and -COOH groups in HBDs of DESs provided active protons to cleave ether bonds and part of carbon-carbon bonds during lignin dissolution and extraction. Additionally, the KL solubility and the Kamlet-Taft (K-T) parameters (α and π * ) of the DESs showed good positive correlation. These findings give a deep insight into the dissolution mechanism of KL and pretreatment of lignocellulose, which is helpful for designing robust DESs for dissolution and pretreatment of lignocellulose.

Hemoglobin–Laccase Modifications of Ligninsulfonate: A Promising Synergistic Stratagem for Lignin Biodegradation

Jiaqi Li,Xu Chen,Ting Shi,Yi-Lei Zhao

Multicomponent systems, such as laccase cooperating with other proteins in ligninase, are able to modify the chemical structure of lignin efficiently and opens the door to potential applications. Here, an in-depth investigation of hemoglobin-assisted laccase oxidation of soluble lignosulfonate is carried out, using a combination of UV–visible spectroscopy, isothermal titration calorimetry, gel permeation chromatography, Raman spectroscopy, 2D nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and high-performance liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry. Intriguingly, hemoglobin enhances the exothermically oxidative process of the laccase reaction. Product characterizations suggest that hemoglobin may preferentially reduce the ratio of guaiacyl/syringyl subunits and promote phenylcoumaran formation simultaneously. The complicated interactions among hemoglobin, laccase, and lignin make a multiple-component reaction, suggesting that Fe-containing macromolecules have the capacity to mediate laccase based chemical modifications of lignin.
