Tetracycline Removal by Hercynite-Biochar from the Co-Pyrolysis of Red Mud-Steel Slag-Sludge

Xian Zhou,Xia Chen,Wei Han,Yi Han,Mengxin Guo,Ziling Peng,Zeyu Fan,Yan Shi,Sha Wan

The sludge-derived biochar is considered an effective emerging contaminants adsorbent for wastewater treatment. In this paper, red mud and steel slag (RMSS) was used for improving sludge dewaterability and enhancing the sludge-derived biochar adsorption capacity. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and a scanning electron microscope (SEM) were employed to comprehensively characterize the mineral composition, functional group, and morphology of the adsorbent. RMSS was able to improve the sludge dewatering performance by providing a skeleton structure to promote drainage and Fe(III) to decrease the Zeta potential. The dosage of 20 mg/g RMSS was able to reduce the specific resistance to filtration (SRF) and the Zeta potential of sludge from 1.57 × 1013m/kg and −19.56 mV to 0.79 × 1013m/kg and −9.10 mV, respectively. The co-pyrolysis of RMSS and sludge (2:8) induced the formation of biochar containing FeAl2O4(PS80). The PS80 exhibited a large surface area (46.40 m2/g) and high tetracycline (TC) removal capacity (98.87 mg/g) when combined with H2O2(PS80-H2O2). The adsorption process of TC onto PS80 and PS80-H2O2was well described by the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic model, indicating physisorption and chemisorption behavior. The results indicated that co-pyrolysis of RMSS sludge PS80-H2O2could enhance the biochar adsorption capacity of TC, attributable to the degradation by ·OH generated by the heterogeneous Fenton reaction of FeAl2O4and H2O2, the release of adsorbed sites, and the improvement of the biochar pore structure. This study proposed a novel method for the use of RMSS to dewater sludge as well as to induce the formation of FeAl2O4in biochar with effective TC removal by providing a Fe and Al source, achieving a waste-to-resource strategy for the integrated management of industrial solid waste and sewage sludge.

Effect of glycerol addition on the pyrolysis characteristics and pyrolytic product distribution of cigar tobacco

Wu Jian,Chen Zhen,Wang Jun,Wang Yiqun,Jiang Jian,Xiao Weiqiang,Xia Qian,Zhang Jiabao,Zhou Guojun,Zhang Junsong,Liang Miao

Cigar tobacco residues are a special air-cured tobacco material with increasing production in domestic. In this present study, the effect of glycerol addition on the pyrolysis characteristic, kinetic behavior, and release of pyrolytic products was investigated by using thermogravimetry coupled with online FTIR and self-built infrared tubular furnace. The thermal weight loss process of cigar tobacco could be divided into four stages, and the glycerol exhibited significant impact on the pyrolysis process. The stage II corresponding the decomposition of volatile components and hemicellulose shifted to the lower temperature accompanied with an increase of DTG max and weight loss at this stage. The T i , T f , and residues were decreased, while the CPI was increased as for the CT-G sample, indicating an increased reactivity and comprehensive pyrolysis performance. Gauss peak fitting was used to separate the pyrolysis process of different pseudocomponents in the tobacco biomass. Pyrolysis kinetic analysis based on Coats-Redfern method showed that the activation energy for the decomposition of each pseudocomponents decreased after the addition of glycerol. The online FTIR and MS analysis also reflected the interaction between glycerol and biomass through the release of pyrolytic gaseous products. GC–MS was further used to analyze the compositions of pyrolytic products in the trapped particulate matter under different heating rates. High heating rate was beneficial for the sufficient release of pyrolysis products and aroma compounds. The glycerol addition inhibited the generation of alkaloids, phenols, esters, ketones, acids, and heterocyclic compounds, indicating some effect may exist between cigar tobacco and glycerol.

Effect of Mixed Fe/Ca Additives on Nitrogen Transformation during Protein and Amino Acid Pyrolysis

Linlin Yi,Huan Liu,Geng Lu,Qiang Zhang,Jiaxing Wang,Hongyun Hu,Hong Yao

Considerable amounts of NOx are generated from the thermal utilization of solid wastes. To control NOx emission, we investigated the influence of mixed Fe/Ca additives on the generation of NOx precursors (HCN and NH3) during pyrolysis at 873, 1073, and 1273 K. Protein, proline, and phenylalanine were selected as model compounds to represent the primary nitrogen forms in typical solid wastes, such as biomass and sludge. According to the results, the iron effect is a remarkable property that enables the obvious reduction of NH3. This was most likely because NH3 was consumed by iron compounds to generate FeNx. Iron compounds facilitated thermal cracking of heterocyclic N with the release of HCN. Ca(OH)2 promoted the conversion of HCN to NH3 and fixed HCN to form CaCxNy simultaneously. These intermediates (FeNx and CaCxNy) play important roles in the reduction of NOx precursors. A lower emission of NOx precursors was observed with mixed Fe/Ca additives than with either Fe or Ca individually. This is because the generation of Ca2Fe2O5 enhanced the tranformation of intermediates to N2. The transformation of intermediates to N2 was enhanced at elevated temperatures, which allows for the lowest emission of precursors (NH3 and HCN) at 1273 K, with a higher ratio of Ca2Fe2O5 in char.

Preparation of furfural by catalytic pyrolysis of cellulose based on nano Na/Fe-solid acid

Xiaowei Bai,Jian Li,Chenxi Jia,Jingai Shao,Qing Yang,Yingquan Chen,Haiping Yang,Xianhua Wang,Hanping Chen

In this study, a new-type of Na/Fe solid acid catalyst was synthesized to achieve efficient conversion of cellulose into furfural. The influence of Na/Fe mass ratios (0.05–2%), pyrolysis temperature (350–750 °C), and catalyst to cellulose ratio (0.2:1–20:1) was investigated through pyrolysis–gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS), and the structure of Na/Fe catalyst was characterized with various approaches. Through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the morphologies of the catalysts were found to exhibit rod-like, prismatic, spherical, and amorphous shapes with increasing Na/Fe. The results indicated that the selectivity of furfural increased with increasing Na/Fe ratio, and reached the highest value (61.4%) at a Na/Fe ratio of 1.42, after which it decreased with further increases in the Na/Fe ratio. Higher temperature and higher catalyst to biomass ratio are favorable for furfural formation, but exceedingly high temperature and catalyst to biomass ratio inhibit its formation. The maximum furfural yield could be achieved at 550 °C and catalyst to cellulose ratio of 10. The proposed catalytic pathway of cellulose pyrolysis for furfural is the promotion of the conversion of glucose monomers into dehydrated sugars such as LGO and DGP, which undergo secondary cracking to form furfural.

Deconstruction of lignite macromolecular network via DMF-assisted deep eutectic solvents for directed pyrolysis valorization

Xiaoxiao Zhou,Miaomiao Feng,Dandan Luo,Lan Yi,Jialing Chen,Pengzhi Bei,Hao Luo,Xiaoqin Wu,Wen-Ying Li

Unlocking the cross-linked network structure of low-rank coal is pivotal for its high-value utilization, yet this process is severely constrained by mass transfer resistance. To address this challenge, a “carrier-permeation” synergistic strategy is proposed herein, which integrates high-permeability dimethylformamide (DMF) with high-activity deep eutectic solvents (DES). Molecular dynamics simulations indicate that DMF may function as a molecular carrier, promoting the deep penetration of viscous DES components into the coal matrix. Experimentally, this synergistic effect induces substantial physical restructuring: particle size is reduced by more than 82% (to 22.57 μm) and the aromatic interlayer spacing ( d 002 ) is increased to 0.355 nm via effective disruption of stacking interactions. Chemically, the system achieves an exceptional desulfurization rate of 90.81%, along with the selective cleavage of ether bridges and long aliphatic chains (CH 2 /CH 3 ratio minimized to 2.71). Consequently, pyrolysis pathways are substantially redirected by this structural remodeling, shifting product distribution from low-value alkanes to high-value olefins (50.47%) and esters (24.09%). A molecular-scale deconstruction system is elucidated, offering a novel approach for clean and value-added utilization of lignite.

Comparative study on composition and pyrolytic behavior of tobacco extracts from solvent extraction and pyrolysis

Pengfei Lu,Rongcheng Wu,Guangwen Xu,Bin Zhang

This study systematically compared tobacco extracts prepared by solvent extraction and by pyrolysis in terms of their chemical composition, thermal stability, and pyrolysis product distribution. An innovative, systematic validation framework integrating residue pyrolysis and extract re-pyrolysis was employed to directly discriminate between extraction-induced compositional effects and pyrolysis-condition effects. This framework elucidates intrinsic correlations among extraction methods, chemical composition, and thermal behavior from the perspectives of aroma diversity and phenolic suppression. The results revealed that the extraction yield increased from 7.08 % to 33.48 % with increasing solvent polarity, while pyrolysis achieved an even higher yield (36.80 %) through high-temperature pyrolytic conversion. Solvent extracts exhibited polarity-driven compositional differences, whereas pyrolysis-derived extract (Py-Ext) was enriched in characteristic aroma compounds such as furfuryl alcohol and maltol, and contained more target compounds (19 types) than solvent extracts (9–15 types). Thermal analysis revealed that the solvent extracts decomposed primarily within the 135–279 ℃ range, yielding product distributions that were highly sensitive to pyrolysis conditions. In contrast, Py-Ext exhibited volatility-dominated thermal behavior that resulted in stable product distributions across a broad operational range. Extract re-pyrolysis revealed that the compositional incompleteness of solvent extracts prevents them from achieving the aromatic richness of Py-Ext, even under identical pyrolysis conditions, while residue pyrolysis confirmed that key aroma precursors were retained in the solid phase during extraction. Meanwhile, solvent extraction markedly suppressed phenolic formation during re-pyrolysis through precursor removal at the source. Overall, the proposed validation framework establishes a causal method–composition–behavior relationship, providing a basis for the rational design of tobacco extracts for targeted applications.

A Pyrolysis-Assisted Strategy for High-Temperature Resistant Afterglow Materials Through Defect-Mediated Emission Mechanisms

Jiaxue Ren,Zexuan Chen,Zhuo Li,Song Shen,Henggang Wang,Yongqing Zhai,Zhengxu Cai,Zhenguang Wang

Achieving high-temperature-resistant afterglow is highly desirable yet challenging, primarily due to exciton deactivation at elevated temperatures. In this work, a co-pyrolysis strategy was proposed to achieve such afterglow by modulating the emission dynamics of organic molecules through introducing of structural defects. These defects facilitate exciton transfer to guest molecules, extending and balancing the lifetimes of both thermally activated delayed fluorescence and phosphorescence processes. The structural defects also promote thermoluminescence, wherein elevated temperatures trigger the release of trapped electrons to the guest molecules, thereby contributing significantly to the exceptional high-temperature afterglow stability. Additionally, the pyrolysis process generates ammelide, which protects excitons from deactivation. These synergistic effects yield afterglow materials exhibiting a photoluminescence quantum yield of 59.9% and an emission lifetime of 3.5 s. Remarkably, intense afterglow emission persists from 25 to 150°C with negligible changes in emission color, intensity, and decay kinetics. These findings provide valuable insights for modulating the emission dynamics of afterglow materials, suggesting promising applications in information security, biomedical diagnosis, and chemical sensing.

Overcoming bamboo recalcitrance via deep eutectic solvent pretreatment combined with pyrolysis for enhanced pyrolytic sugars

Kai Wu,Yijie Zheng,Mingfan Li,Wenguang Zheng,Mingguang Song,Liandong Hu,Ke Yang,Jiajun Yu,Huiyan Zhang

Renewable and short-season bamboo is a potential feedstock to produce pyrolytic sugars (e.g., levoglucosan) that can be upgraded into liquid fuels and chemicals. However, cellulose in bamboo is tightly intertwined with lignin and hemicellulose, forming a high recalcitrance and complex composition, resulting in hindering the effective release of levoglucosan during fast pyrolysis. The novel route of bamboo pretreated by deep eutectic solvents (DESs) coupled with fast pyrolysis was proposed for producing pyrolytic sugars. The results showed that the bamboo pretreated by choline chloride (ChCl)/formic acid (FA) produced the levoglucosan yield of 198.6 mg/g via fast pyrolysis, increased by about 43 times as compared to raw bamboo, while the relative contents of phenols and acids were significantly reduced. The characteristic analysis showed that the activation energy of the pretreated sample is in a direct proportional relationship with the crystallinity index. The change of crystallinity index and removal of lignin and AAEMs promoted the levoglucosan formation. This work provides an effective route to convert highly resistant lignocellulose into pyrolytic sugars via fast pyrolysis.

Catalytic properties of CuO–Cr2O3–PbO ternary nanocomposites favorable for the pyrolysis of ammonium perchlorate

Guang-pu Zhang,Yu-hang Cheng,Miao-miao Li,Lei Xiao,Hu Guo,Wei Jiang,Ga-zi Hao

In this study, CuO–Cr 2 O 3 –PbO ternary nanocomposites (TNCs) with different atomic ratios of Cu:Cr:Pb (5:2:8, 5:4:6, 5:6:4, 5:8:2) were synthesized by means of efficient mechanical milling. As confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), uniform and impurity-free CuO–Cr 2 O 3 –PbO TNCs with an average grain size of 30 nm were successfully obtained. The catalytic properties of CuO–Cr 2 O 3 –PbO TNCs favorable for the pyrolysis of ammonium perchlorate (AP) were studied through thermogravimetric (TG) analysis and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results show that TNC-8, which has an atomic ratio of 5:8:2 (Cu:Cr:Pb), exhibited the highest catalytic activity for the pyrolysis of AP when the pyrolytic temperature of AP decreased from 441.3 °C to 360.2 °C and the Gibbs free energy ( Δ G ≠ ΔG≠ ) decreased from 199.8 kJ·mol −1 to 175.2 kJ·mol −1 , as compared to CuO–Cr 2 O 3 –PbO nanocomposites with other atomic ratios.

Sequential pyrolysis of coal and biomass: Influence of coal-derived volatiles on property of biochar

Chao Li,Yifan Sun,Lijun Zhang,Qingyang Li,Shu Zhang,Xun Hu

Coal and biomass are two important carbonaceous feedstock and their co-pyrolysis has been proven to modify the fuel properties of resulting oil and char. Nevertheless, how do the volatiles from coal impact the property of biochar from biomass is largely unknown. In this study, sequential pyrolysis of coal in upper bed with sawdust, cellulose, or lignin in lower bed at 600 °C was investigated. The volatiles from the pyrolysis of coal did react with the biochar from biomass, which promoted cracking reactions and resulted in the formation of more gases at expense of biochar. The coal-derived volatiles enhanced the cracking or gasification of sugar derivatives and impacted the evolution of aromatic phenols. Furthermore, coal-derived volatiles also promoted the cracking or deoxygenation of oxygen-containing functionalities, making the biochar carbon-rich with higher crystallinity but reduced the thermal stability. Additionally, the hydrophilicity and the evolution of functionalities on surface biochar was also significantly affected by the volatiles from pyrolysis of coal.

Mesoporous Cu-Ce-Ox Solid Solutions from Spray Pyrolysis for Superior Low-Temperature CO Oxidation

Rengui Li,Yixuan Yang,Na Sun,Long Kuai

Development of Pt group metal-free catalysts for low-temperature CO oxidation remains critical. In this work, active and stable mesoporous Cu-Ce-O x solid solutions are prepared by using spray pyrolysis. The specific surface areas and pore volumes reach as high as 170 m 2 g −1 and 0.24 cm 3 g −1 , respectively. The results of CO oxidation study suggest that (1) the catalyst obtained by spray pyrolysis possesses much higher activity than those made by co-precipitation, sol-gel, and hydrothermal methods; (2) the optimal Cu 0.2 -Ce 0.8 -O x solid solution presents a reactivity over 28 times that of both single-component CuO and CeO 2 at 70 °C. Based on the study of pure-phase Cu-Ce-O x solid solutions by selective leaching of segregated CuO x species, the active center for CO oxidation is confirmed as the bimetallic Cu-Ce-O site, whereas the individual CuO x particles not only act as spectators but also block the active Cu-Ce-O sites. A low apparent activation energy of approximately 48 kJ mol −1 is detected for CO oxidation at the Cu-Ce-O site, making Cu-Ce-O x solid solutions able to present high activity at low temperature. Furthermore, the Cu-Ce-O x catalysts exhibit excellent stability and thermal tolerance toward CO oxidation. Graphical Pt-free CO oxidation : Well-shaped mesoporous Cu-Ce-O x solid solutions were produced for low-temperature CO oxidation by using a nitrate spray pyrolysis route, and a selective leaching strategy was adopted to remove the surface segregated CuO x species. The bimetallic Cu-Ce-O site was confirmed as the active center for CO oxidation, whereas the individually segregated CuO x species not only acted as spectators, but also blocked the active Cu-Ce-O sites (see scheme).

Catalytic Fast Pyrolysis of Wheat Stalk with Transition Metal Nitrides to Upgrade the Pyrolytic Products

Iqbal Tahir,Lu Qiang,Zhang Zhen-Xi,Ali Zulfiqar,Li Kai,Ma Shan-Wei,Abbas Adnan,Dong Chang-Qing

Analytical pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) technique was employed to explore lignocellulosic biomass catalytic pyrolysis with transition metal nitride catalysts (TiN, ZrN, and W2N). Various factors like suitability of catalysts, catalyst to biomass (C/B) ratio and pyrolysis temperature on pyrolytic product distribution were investigated for their roles in improvement of fuel properties of pyrolysis oil. The results indicated that TiN significantly facilitated the cleavage of lignin to produce phenolic compounds. It also devolatilized holocellulose to produce organic volatile compounds by reducing linear aldehydes while increasing furans and cyclopentanones. The maximum volatile product yield was recorded when the pyrolysis temperature was 500 °C and C/B ratio was 1. It was further noted that maximum contents of phenolics, cyclopentanones and furans produced from the catalytic process were 1.53, 1.37 and 1.80 times higher than those in the noncatalytic process, respectively. In addition, the content of linear aldehydes was reduced expressively to 3.32 times compared to non-catalytic process. The maximal content of stable phenolics obtained from the catalytic process was 2.31 times greater than non-catalytic process. Comparing overall effect, TiN was most capable to upgrade bio-oil by lowering oxygen content and increasing phenolics, cyclopentanones and furans. It expressed promising catalytic properties towards high grade pyrolysis oil.
