Temperature is a key operating variable that governs both activity and selectivity in the electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR). Here, we systematically elucidate the temperature-dependent behavior of a bismuth-based catalyst supported on carbon nanotubes (Bi-CNT) over a broad window of 303–343 K. The catalyst delivers a maximum Faradaic efficiency of 95% for formate at 318 K, accompanied by a high partial current density for formate of 285.6 mA cm −2 at a total current density of 300 mA cm −2 . By combining in-situ Raman spectroscopy with molecular dynamics simulations, we reveal that the moderate heating enhances formate selectivity through a cooperative increase in local alkalinity and a restructuring of the hydrogen‑bond network of interfacial water, which suppress the hydrogen evolution reaction. At elevated temperatures, the attenuation of local alkalinity and the growth of weakly hydrogen‑bonded water populations promote CO and H 2 formation, leading to diminished formate selectivity. These findings establish temperature‑mediated control of the interfacial microenvironment as an efficient strategy for robust, high‑rate CO 2 ‑to‑formate conversion under industrially relevant, thermally dynamic operating conditions.

Polyaniline (PANI) is a promising organic thermoelectric material, but its application is limited by the intrinsic trade-off between electrical conductivity ( σ ) and Seebeck coefficient ( S ). Here, we report a multi-interface engineering strategy to enhance the thermoelectric performance of PANI/Bi₂Te₃ composites. HCl-doped PANI (HPANI) and Bi₂Te₃ are mechanically mixed, and a small amount of emeraldine base PANI (PANI-eb) is introduced to construct additional organic–inorganic interfaces. XPS and UV-vis spectroscopy reveal that these interfaces induce partial de-doping of HPANI, progressively widening the optical bandgap from 1.49 eV to 2.96 eV and reducing carrier concentration. Simultaneously, the increased interfacial density creates energy barriers that filter low-energy carriers, enhancing the average carrier mobility. Hall measurements confirm a mobility increase from 39.9 to 118.6 cm²·V⁻¹·s⁻¹ at 10 wt.% PANI-eb, while carrier concentration decreases monotonically. Temperature-dependent transport further supports the energy-filtering mechanism. Optimized hot pressing at 75 °C improves interfacial contact and polymer chain ordering, leading to simultaneous enhancement of σ and S . The resulting composite achieves a room-temperature S of 149.1 μV·K⁻¹, σ of 17.35 S·cm⁻¹, and a power factor of 38.59 μW·m⁻¹·K⁻¹, which is comparable to the best literature values for bulk PANI-based composites. This work demonstrates that rational interfacial design with PANI-eb, combined with moderate thermal treatment, provides an effective strategy to balance σ and S in polymer-based thermoelectric materials.

The circular dichroism (CD) signal of D-BiOBr/Bi 0.3 g flipped and intensified. • The nanosheets of D-BiOBr/Bi 0.3 g were arranged in a spiral (counterclockwise) manner, forming petal-shaped nanospheres. • 0.3 g D-BiOBr/Bi exhibits a CO production rate of 84.27 μmol・g −1 h −1 , 3.34 times the value of D-BiOBr and 4.00 times that of 0.3 g pristine BiOBr/Bi sample. • LSPR boosts the migration of spin−down polarized electrons and improves the separation efficiency of photogenerated electron−hole pairs. Chiral inorganic nanomaterials have shown considerable promise in photocatalysis, owing to their distinctive optical activity and asymmetric interfacial effects. Metallic bismuth (Bi) exhibits a localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect, which markedly enhances both the generation and separation efficiencies of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. By employing D-sorbitol as a chiral inducer, we successfully synthesized chiral D-BiOBr/Bi nanocomposites. We propose that the synergistic integration of metallic Bi and chiral BiOBr enables effective modulation of chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS), thereby enhancing spin polarization and promoting CO production from CO 2 reduction. Among the prepared samples, D-BiOBr/Bi 0.3 g exhibited the highest photocatalytic CO 2 reduction activity, selectively converting CO 2 to CO. The CO production rate of D-BiOBr/Bi 0.3 g was 84.27 μmol g −1 h −1 , which was 4.00 times and 3.34 times that of BiOBr/Bi 0.3 g and D-BiOBr respectively. Furthermore, magnetic conductive atomic force microscopy (Mc-AFM) measurements revealed that D-BiOBr/Bi 0.3 g generated the strongest tunneling current with an opposite polarity compared to its controls, providing indirect evidence for CISS-associated spin-selective charge transport. Collectively, our findings demonstrate a strong coupling between the LSPR of metallic Bi and structural chirality, which cooperatively boosts spin-polarized electron generation, accelerates electron-hole pair separation, and significantly improves photocatalytic CO 2 reduction performance.

Diatomite-induced amino coordination transformation Bi-MOF composite was prepared. • Surface silanol groups modulate Bi 3+ coordination, inducing amino ligand transformation. • The coordination transformation forms highly dispersed NH 2 -Bi-MOF nanowhiskers. • The composite shows enhanced photocatalysis, cycling stability and lower costs. Developing photocatalysts featuring outstanding catalytic activity and economic viability contributes greatly to artificial carbon cycling and addressing energy and environmental challenges. In this study, we adopted a strategy combining amino ligand modification with diatomite support to successfully synthesize amino-modified NH 2 -Bi-MOF/diatomite composites. These materials utilize the silanol groups on the diatomite surface to modulate the coordination environment of the Bi 3+ metal centers, inducing the conversion of amino ligands and promoting the formation of Bi-N bonds, thereby transforming the morphology of the NH 2 -Bi-MOF from an agglomerated state to highly dispersed nanowhiskers. The characterization results indicate that the highly dispersed structure endows the material with outstanding chemical stability, light-harvesting capability, CO 2 adsorption capacity, and carrier separation efficiency. Meanwhile, the optimal sample, NH 2 -Bi-MOF/diatomite-0.2, achieves a CO production rate of 10.440 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 , representing increases of 78% and 45% compared to Bi-MOF and NH 2 -Bi-MOF, respectively. Notably, no apparent decline in catalytic performance was observed after four cycles. Furthermore, the introduction of diatomite substantially reduces catalyst preparation costs. This study also systematically elucidates the conversion mechanism of amino ligands and the interfacial synergy between diatomite and NH 2 -Bi-MOF, clarifying the photocatalytic CO 2 reduction pathways and core mechanisms of the composite material. The findings provide new insights for the development and industrial application of highly efficient and economical photocatalysts. Efficient photocatalytic nitrogen fixation critically depends on rapid charge carrier transport and effective surface reactions. In this study, a Bi 2 MoO 6 -based photocatalyst was successfully developed through surface modification with varying concentrations of ascorbic acid. After modification by ascorbic acid, defects were introduced on the surface of Bi 2 MoO 6 catalyst, which changed the octahedral coordination environment of MoO 6 , resulting in structural adjustment, reduced band gap, increased conduction potential, and reduced surface work function. These changes facilitated accelerated photo-induced charge migration and separation of Bi 2 MoO 6 . Consequently, the efficiency of photogenerated charge carrier separation was significantly enhanced, resulting in improved photocatalytic performance. Notably, the optimized BMO-1 catalyst exhibited a maximum NH 3 production rate of 240.5 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 without the use of sacrificial agents under visible light irradiation, which is 4.5 times higher than that of pristine Bi 2 MoO 6 . This work demonstrates a simple, effective, and controllable strategy for catalyst modification to boost photocatalytic nitrogen fixation performance.

The direct upgrading of biomass-derived aqueous ethanol to produce long-chain alcohols is important due to the growing demand for value-added sustainable fine chemicals and liquid fuel. In this work, a bimetallic Ni@C catalyst was synthesized by using a facile sol–gel method with bismuth (Bi) doping. The bimetallic NiBi-1/1@C catalyst exhibited distinct advantages in forming C6+ high-carbon alcohols and inhibiting C1 byproducts compared with the monometallic Ni@C. Optimally, an ethanol conversion up to 87.2% with a C6+ alcohol selectivity of 79.9% was demonstrated and the C1 byproduct selectivity was suppressed to 10.1%. The doping of Bi modulates the adsorption of aldehydes on the Ni site, which inhibits the C–C cleavage side reaction, thus realizing the direct and efficient conversion of an ethanol solution to C6+ alcohols. These findings provide a promising strategy for directly converting biomass-derived ethanol to sustainable high-carbon alcohols and biofuel precursors.

SnO 2 -based materials are promising electrocatalysts for the conversion of CO 2 to formate however increasing their activity further is challenging due to the suboptimal CO 2 adsorption and activation capacity. The interfacial engineering has proven effective in modulating the electronic structure and adsorption behavior of electrocatalysts. Herein, a heterostructure Bi/SnO 2 was constructed for the CO 2 electroreduction to formate in which a formate Faraday efficiency of 94.9 % and single-pass carbon efficiency of 40.3 % were achieved at −1.0 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode in 1.0 M KOH. During a 30-hour stability test, the current density was nearly constant without a significant decrease while the formate Faraday efficiency was maintained around 90 %. This remarkable activity is attributed to the strong electronic interaction arising from p–p orbital coupling at the Bi/SnO 2 interface, according to the experimental and theoretical investigations. The computational insights suggest that the p–p orbital coupling promotes the electron transfer from Bi to SnO 2 and optimizes the adsorption strength of the intermediate (*OCHO) to enhance the catalytic activity. The formation of *OCHO during formate generation was confirmed by the i n situ attenuated total reflectance surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy. This work might contribute key insights into the mechanisms underlying activity enhancement via strong electronic interaction between dual p- block metal catalysts.

Core-shell photonic microcapsules (PhMCs) have the advantage of rich structural color compared with homogeneous photonic crystal microspheres, and thus have higher application value. How to prepare structurally color controllable PhMCs with responsive functions is increasingly urgent, which is related to the possibility of further expanding their applications. In this report, we integrate microfluidic and controlled etching techniques to conveniently prepare structurally color controllable responsive PhMCs and successfully apply them in the fields of metal ion detection and optical anti-counterfeiting. Microfluidics endows PhMCs with controllable and homogeneous dimensions. Meanwhile, controlled etching gives PhMCs shells a controllable ratio of opal/inverse-opal structures. The fully-etched PhMCs were designed as metal ion detectors to identify the existence of metal ions in the solution through the change of structural color. Notably, the partially etched PhMCs have three structural colors of red/green/yellow, which is the first time that triple stop band gaps PhMCs have been prepared based on two materials. The triple information has been switched by adjusting the transmission/reflection modes and the temperature to explore the function of an optical anti-counterfeiting model. Our study provides a new path for the construction of functionalized PhMCs, and further expands its potential application value.

As Ni-based electrochromic (EC) materials have a wider band gap, low electron conductivity, and limited reactive sites, it is challenging for Ni-based EC materials to obtain high optical modulation with a realistic colored state and high coloration efficiency. This study presents Ni-Bi hydroxide (Ni-Bi-40, Ni-Bi-60, and Ni-Bi-80) for dual-functional EC and energy storage films, aiming to address challenges in Ni-based EC materials. By introducing Bi³⁺, which have a larger ionic radius than Ni²⁺, the films experience lattice strain, inducing crystalline distortions that expand interlayer spacing and enhance ion mobility. This leads to significant improvements in EC performance, with optical modulation values of 77 %, 80 %, and 60 % and transmissive colored states of 20 %, 2 %, and 0 % for Ni-Bi-40, Ni-Bi-60, and Ni-Bi-80 films, respectively. These films demonstrate high cyclic stability up to 7000 seconds and coloration efficiency of 49, 52, and 41 cm²/C. In terms of energy storage, the films achieve specific capacitance of 32.1, 58.3, and 65.4 F/cm² at 5 mV/s for Ni-Bi-40, Ni-Bi-60, and Ni-Bi-80 films, with GCD tests yielding 83.0, 153.0, and 365.0 mF/cm² at 8 mA/cm², respectively. These findings highlight the potential of Ni-Bi films for advanced multifunctional applications in energy-efficient technologies.

In this study, bi-functions of surface adsorption and laccase like catalysis were integrated by the hybrid membranes of Cu-MOF (Cu-2MI) uniformly incorporated polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) for the first time, which endow an unexpected utility in surface physical adsorption and chemical catalytic engineering. In which, the loading of Cu-2MI was varied to optimize the surface performance of the membranes. The adsorption conditions were optimized based on batch adsorption experiments, and the adsorption kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamics were discussed by using theoretical models to elucidate the adsorption mechanism. In addition, the laccase-mimicking catalytic performance of these Cu-2MI/PVDF hybrid membranes was explored based on the colorimetric reaction of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DP). The laccase-like catalytic kinetics, including K m and V max , were determined, and their catalytic stability under varying pH, temperature, organic solvents, and storage time was systematically tested and compared to that of free laccase. The maximum adsorption capacity of the obtained Cu-2MI/PVDF hybrid membrane for acid fuchsin (AF) is 4789.5 μg cm −2 . Moreover, the hybrid membrane exhibits a good linear relationship in the range of 5.0–750 μM in adrenaline detection, with a detection limit of 3.60 μM. This work highlights the exceptional surface activity and stability of the Cu-MOF/PVDF hybrid membranes, which ensure promising applicability in surface physical and chemical engineering.

In the realm of sustainable road construction, bio-oil has emerged as a promising and eco-friendly alternative for rejuvenating aged asphalt. Nevertheless, challenges arise due to poor stability, diminished performance at elevated temperatures, and limited anti-aging properties. This study introduces an innovative approach by blending biochar, obtained from the pyrolysis of waste coffee grounds, into bio-oil to create a composite modified regenerator. Initially, the study conducts a microscopic characterization of the biochar using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Subsequently, the rheological properties of this composite rejuvenated asphalt are evaluated across low, moderate, and high-temperature ranges using bending beam rheometer (BBR), linear amplitude sweep (LAS), and multiple stress creep and recovery (MSCR) tests. Departing from the traditional emphasis on initial property restoration, it further delves into performance alterations after re-aging of rejuvenated asphalt through temperature sweep (TS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) tests, providing a comprehensive assessment of the anti-aging characteristics of rejuvenated asphalt. Additionally, gel permeation chromatography (GPC) is employed to quantitatively analyze the changes in asphalt molecular weight distribution. The microscopic characterization reveals the development of a rough and porous structure within the biochar, facilitating enhanced adhesion and interaction between the rejuvenator and the asphalt binder. Moreover, bio-oil rejuvenated asphalt exhibits excellent low-temperature crack resistance and moderate-temperature fatigue resistance. Following the incorporation of biochar, notable enhancements in high-temperature rutting resistance and anti-aging properties are observed, validating the efficacy of the biochar with bio-oil composite modified regenerator. To achieve optimal performance outcomes, a biochar content of 6 % (as a proportion of aged asphalt), corresponding to a 1:1 ratio of biochar to bio-oil, is recommended. Under this condition, the properties of the composite modified rejuvenated asphalt demonstrate comparability to those of the original asphalt. In summary, this research underscores the potential for integrating waste coffee biochar material into infrastructure development, thereby promoting circular economy principles and advancing more sustainable construction practices.

van der Waals heterojunctions (vdWHs) have emerged as a promising strategy to improve the optoelectronic properties of materials for use in optoelectronic devices. In this study, independent tellurium nanotube (Te NT) structures with diameters of approximately 80 ± 10 nm were first synthesized. Subsequently, zero-dimensional (0D) bismuth quantum dots (Bi QDs) were uniformly deposited on the surface of one-dimensional (1D) Te NTs via a hydrothermal bottom-up assembly process, successfully constructing a mixed-dimensional Bi/Te van der Waals heterojunction (vdWH) with Bi QDs densely distributed around the Te NTs. The nonlinear optical properties of the heterojunction were systematically investigated. Due to the built-in electric field at the tellurium/bismuth interface, these vdWHs show significantly enhanced nonlinear absorption, lower saturation intensity, and improved carrier transport. These properties make Bi/Te vdWHs promising candidates for advanced optical applications. Furthermore, stable ultrashort pulses and bound-state solitons at a 1.5 μm wavelength were generated by incorporating Bi/Te vdWHs as saturable absorbers within an erbium-doped fiber laser cavity. Such findings highlight the potential of Bi/Te vdWHs as a versatile platform for developing high-performance optical devices with enhanced optoelectronic and nonlinear optical properties.
