In this paper, explain a new relationships between Bi 3+ content, the phase crystal, microstructure and conductivity for Sm and Bi co-doped Ce 0.8− x Sm 0.2 Bi x O 1.9−1/2 x ( x = 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2) electrolytes prepared by co-precipitation method. The XRD patterns showed that this compounds exhibit a fluorite-type cubic structure after the samples calcined at 700 °C for 4 h and the cell volumes of increased when the Bi content increased. In addition, for the samples sintered at 1400 °C for 4 h, the Bi doping improves the relative density, the grain size and the average thermal expansion coefficient (TEC). More in details, the relative density and TEC increase with the Bi content. Form the AC impedance spectroscopy measurements, the conductivity of the sintered samples is found to improve with the increasing of Bi content (for x ≤ 0.15), which is ascribed to the increasing of the number of oxygen ion vacancies and the increase in the unit cell volume. However, the conductivity decreases when the Bi content is further increased (0.15 < x ≤ 0.2), which is ascribed the reduction of the number of free oxygen vacancies. The highest conductivity at 800 °C is 5.6 × 10 −2 S/cm and the activation energy is 0.83 eV for Ce 0.65 Sm 0.2 Bi 0.15 O 1.825 , indicating that this would be a promising electrolyte for the intermediate temperature-solid oxide fuel cell applications.

The technique of thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) is favorable for the fabrication of a porous scaffold due to a number of advantages. In this work the poly(L-lactide-co-glycolide-co-ε-caprolactone) (PLLGC) terpolymer was synthesized by melt copolymerization and porous scaffolds thereof from its solution in 1,4-dioxane were fabricated by using the TIPS method. The effects of fabrication parameters, including polymer concentration and freezing temperature, on the morphology, pore size and mechanical properties were studied. The results showed that the average pore size of the PLLGC porous scaffold increased with a decrease in PLLGC concentration and the pore size resulting from freezing at 4 °C (about 20–100 μm) was significantly larger than for other samples (20–50 μm) frozen at lower temperatures. The porosity of the scaffolds decreased with increasing PLLGC concentration or decreasing freezing temperature. On the other hand, the compressive strength of the scaffolds increased with the increase of PLLGC concentration or the decrease of freezing temperature, as would be expected. The present results can be applied in design to control the processing parameters of TIPS for a scaffold with desired pore morphology.

The traditional impregnation method for preparing supported catalysts often faces challenges such as particle agglomeration and weak support–metal interactions. This study focuses on utilizing the exsolution method to prepare Fe, Co, and Ni supported catalysts from ABO3-type perovskites, aiming to overcome these challenges. Experimental results show that LaBO3 perovskites with different B site metals (B = Fe, Co, Ni) exhibit different metal exsolution kinetics in the ammonia synthesis reaction. LaNiO3 demonstrates an initial activity of 782.2 μmol g−1 h−1 within the first 2 hours of the reaction, maintaining stability beyond 80 hours. In contrast, LaFeO3 and LaCoO3 exhibit prolonged initiation periods for the metal exsolution process, reaching activities of 7873.8 μmol g−1 h−1 and 8046.7 μmol g−1 h−1, respectively, after approximately 80 hours. The degree of B-site metal exsolution was investigated using X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) and Rietveld refinement of XRD data, revealing exsolution rates of 72.03%, 69.3%, and 86.3% for Fe, Co, and Ni, respectively, after 80 hours of reaction. This study not only introduces the exsolution method for ammonia synthesis but also empirically validates several computational predictions, thereby supporting both theoretical and practical research.

Copper-based electrocatalysts demonstrate significant potential for electrochemical CO 2 reduction toward value-added chemicals. However, achieving selective synthesis of multi-carbon (C 2+ ) products on copper-based catalysts remains a substantial challenge. In this study, a Cu 2 O electrocatalyst (Mg 0.1 -Cu 2 O-SC) doped with magnesium (Mg) and surface-modified by sodium citrate (SC) was successfully synthesized via a simple wet chemical reduction method. The Mg 0.1 -Cu 2 O-SC achieves a Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 77.8% and a partial current density of 357.9 mA cm −2 for C 2+ products, which is 1.35 times higher than the FE of unmodified Cu 2 O. Mg 0.1 -Cu 2 O achieves an enhancement in the FE for CO, demonstrating that the Lewis-acidic Mg weakens the bond strength of Cu−*CO and enhances the local concentration of *CO by attracting electrons from Cu. In situ spectroscopic analysis reveals that the surface modification of SC facilitates the *CO to *CHO hydrogenation, which shifts the C−C coupling to a more favorable *CO−*CHO route with a lower-energy barrier and consequently improves the FE for C 2+ products. Theoretical calculations indicate that the electron-withdrawing effect of Mg induces a downward shift in the copper d-band center. Energy barrier analyses reveal that SC effectively lowers the energy barriers for both the water dissociation reaction and the *CO−*CHO coupling reaction. This work confirms that Mg effectively modulates the adsorption behavior of key intermediates and synergistically optimizes the reaction pathway in concert with SC.

The hygroscopic nature of ethylene glycol (EG) can induce spontaneous fluctuations in water content throughout anhydrous EG media. However, the residual water content may affect metal electrodeposition process in the EG media. Therefore, this study elucidates water content effect on Co(II) reduction process and cobalt electrocrystallization mechanism. Compared with those in anhydrous EG, the Co(II) electrochemical reduction mechanism and the metallic cobalt electrocrystallization mechanism in EG containing various water contents remain unchanged. Co(II) reduction follows one-step irreversible reaction. However, varying water content can modify some reduction characteristics such as nucleation overpotential, peak potential, peak current density, and kinetic irreversibility in the EG-H 2 O system. Cobalt nucleation follows a typical diffusion-controlled mechanism and demonstrates the three-dimensional instantaneous growth behavior. Additionally, adding water to anhydrous EG can alter the Co(II) transport mechanism and interface reaction kinetics, and lead to the occurrence of adsorption phenomena that do not occur in anhydrous EG. Importantly, with increasing water content, the charge transfer resistance of Co(II) decreases gradually. The kinetic control can transition from electrochemical polarization at low overpotentials to mixed diffusion/charge-transfer control at high overpotentials. Water content exhibits a negligible effect on the composition of cobalt deposits, but a significant effect on their microstructure. These findings collectively demonstrate that the role of water in the cobalt electrodeposition process cannot be ignored in EG-based electrolytes, and controlling the water content can precisely regulate the cobalt coatings microstructure. This work provides a simple and efficient method for precisely controlling material microstructure.

Tb3+/Gd3+-codoped BiF3 nanoparticles were synthesized via a controlled, room-temperature co-precipitation method to address the critical challenge of low photoluminescence (PL) quantum efficiency in singly Tb3+-doped fluoride phosphors. Structural analysis confirmed a stable cubic phase (Fmm) with successful substitutional doping on Bi3+ sites. At the optimal 5 : 5 mol% Tb : Gd ratio, a quantum yield of 13.5%—a fourfold enhancement over Tb3+-only systems—was achieved. The mechanism of enhancement operates through two complementary, excitation-wavelength-dependent pathways: (I) Under short-UV irradiation (230–260 nm), Gd3+ acts as a sensitizer—harvesting photons via its 8S7/2 → 6IJ/6PJ transitions and transferring energy to Tb3+ via resonance Gd3+ → Tb3+ energy transfer, directly proven by excitation spectroscopy. (II) Under 365 nm excitation—where Tb3+ is the primary absorber and Gd3+ absorbs negligibly—Gd3+ enhances PL efficiency through a complementary crystal field modification mechanism: Gd3+ substitution modifies the local phonon environment around bulk Tb3+ sites, reducing the non-radiative depopulation rate of the 5D4 excited state. This is directly evidenced by time-resolved PL decay showing +65% and +87% elongation of Tb3+ bulk lifetime components (τ2 and τ3) upon co-doping. CIE chromaticity analysis confirms high-purity green emission. These findings provide dual-mechanism characterization of Gd3+/Tb3+ co-doping in BiF3, establishing a rational design framework for Gd3+-enhanced lanthanide phosphors.

The widespread occurrence of carbamazepine (CBZ) in aquatic environments necessitates efficient water treatment technologies. This study developed a cobalt-doped iron oxychloride (Co-FeOCl) catalyst via a facile calcination method to activate peracetic acid (PAA) for enhanced degradation of CBZ. The incorporation of Co into the FeOCl structure dramatically boosted the catalytic performance, with 0.5Co-FeOCl exhibiting superior activity compared to pristine FeOCl. The 0.5Co-FeOCl/PAA system achieved an apparent rate constant of 0.039 min⁻ 1 , 19.5 and 5.6 times higher than that of the PAA alone (0.002 min⁻ 1 ) and FeOCl/PAA (0.007 min⁻ 1 ) systems, respectively. Mechanistic investigations revealed that the degradation was primarily driven by organic radicals (CH 3 C(O)OO• and CH 3 C(O)O•) and high-valent metal species (Co(IV) and Fe(IV)). The Co doping established synergistic Fe(II)/Fe(III)-Co(II)/Co(III) redox cycles, effectively accelerating the rate-limiting Fe(III) reduction step and facilitating continuous generation of reactive species. XPS analysis confirmed an increased surface Fe(II) content after reaction, supporting this synergistic mechanism. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations proved that Co sites exhibit superior adsorption capacity for PAA compared to Fe sites on three main facets. This work not only presents 0.5Co-FeOCl as a highly efficient and stable catalyst for PAA activation but also provides fundamental insights into the synergistic mechanisms in bimetallic/PAA systems for remediating refractory organic pollutants.

In this work, a unique three-dimensional (3D) network NiFeCoP@Ti₃C₂Tₓ composite, consisting of Co, Fe co-doped Ni 2 P (NiFeCoP) nanosheets anchored on Ti₃C₂Tₓ nanosheets via heterojunction, was situ constructed by phosphidizing the NiFeCo-LDH@Ti₃C₂Tₓ precursor. The 3D network structure establishes a 3D conductive network while generating a built-in electric field at the heterointerface, which efficiently accelerates electron/ion transport and simultaneously improves the structure stability of the electrode. DFT calculations demonstrate that Co doping further optimizes the electronic structure of NiFeCoP, introduces additional active sites, thereby promoting electrochemical reaction kinetics. Meanwhile, the synergistic effect among Ni, Fe, and Co with different redox potentials effectively buffers the volume changes during charge/discharge processes. Consequently, NiFeCoP@Ti₃C₂Tₓ as lithium ion batteries (LIBs) anode shows outstanding electrochemical performance at different current density (950 mAh/g after 340 cycles at 0.5 A/g, 816 mAh/g after 900 cycles at 1 A/g, 541 mAh/g after 1000 cycles at 2 A/g).

Dinuclear metal synergistic catalysis (DMSC) has been evidenced to be effective in enhancing the catalytic activity for CO 2 reduction. However, the reaction kinetics of CO 2 reduction is still limited by the local CO 2 concentration around the dinuclear catalytic centers. Inspired by the structure of carbonic anhydrase, we have designed and synthesized a dinuclear cobalt(II) complex with an –OH group. This complex not only exhibits DMSC for CO 2 reduction but also possesses excellent capture capacity for CO 2 molecules. Consequently, the complex demonstrates high efficiency for the photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 to CO, with turnover number reaching as high as 43,400 and a selectivity of 97%. Even in 10% CO 2 , the complex still shows state-of-the-art catalytic activity. The results of experiments and theoretical calculations reveal that besides the DMSC contributing to the enhanced catalytic activity, the –OH group in the dinuclear cobalt(II) complex facilitates the capture of CO 2 by the formation of HCO 3 − intermediates, thereby enhancing the affinity towards CO 2 and boosting the catalytic activity for CO 2 -to-CO conversion.

Developing catalysts with high metal utilization rates for activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) has attracted extensive attention. Herein, Co and N co-doped hierarchical porous carbon (Co/HOPNC) was synthesized successfully for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation to degrade phenol . Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) confirmed that this hierarchical porous carbon indeed offered a site for the highly dispersed with low doping amount of Co. The 1.5 % Co/HOPNC exhibited the optimal removal efficiency and admirable adaptability to pH, temperature and different co-existing ions, which was credited to the highly dispersing Co atoms. Furthermore, the leaching of Co showed a neglectable impact on catalytic efficiency, revealing metal leaching was indeed inhibited. Remarkably, singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) and high-valence Co-oxo species were verified as major contributors to enhance the catalytic activity. This finding gives a unique insight in PMS activation mechanism triggered nonradical pathways of hierarchical porous carbon materials. Moreover, the 1.5 % Co/HOPNC displayed an outstanding effect on phenol degradation in actual wastewater which expressed great potential in practical applications.

CoS 2 /Co-Ni layered double hydroxides (LDHs) with a rational tailored pore structure are developed by partial sulfurization of Co-ZIF-L and subsequent Ni 2+ etching for the transformation of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) to layered double hydroxides . The as-synthesized CoS 2 /Co-Ni LDHs maintain the leaf-like structure and have rich hierarchical pores. More importantly, CoS 2 nanoparticles are uniformly embedded among Co-Ni LDH layers, facilitating mass diffusion and favorably exposing more active sites. Benefiting from these desirable compositional and structural features, a remarkable specific capacitance (capacity) of 1784 F/g (223 mAh/g) at 1 A/g is delivered by CoS 2 /Co-Ni LDHs. Furthermore, the as-assembled CoS 2 /Co-Ni LDH//activated carbon as the asymmetric supercapacitor device also exhibits a high energy density of 125 Wh/kg at a power density of 800 W/kg and a superb capacitance retention of 98 % after 5000 cycles, outperforming many Co-Ni LDH based electrode materials reported in the literature.

Considering their actual commercial large-scale applications, research on non-precious metal catalysts has garnered much interest. Particularly, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are used as non-precious metal catalysts because of their controllable, high surface area and rich N content. Herein, a MOF is transformed into a three-dimensional and porous Co–N–C catalyst by a one-step synthesis method and the joint action of Zn and PVP is reported. The catalyst exhibited efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performance (E1/2 = 0.83 V vs. RHE) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance (Ej10 = 1.69 V vs. RHE). More meaningfully, the Zn–air battery (ZAB) assembled with the catalyst, exhibited superior 3100 min cycling charging/discharging stability and a high power density of 109.8 mW cm−2, compared with the Pt–RuO2 of 2600 min of cycling charging/discharging stability and power density of 96.1 mW cm−2. The solid-state ZAB based on the catalyst also showed excellent rechargeable flexibility and stability. Undoubtedly, this is a bifunctional oxygen electrocatalytic catalyst with practical application value.
