In-situ decoration of Cu2(OH)3F on BiOBr with exposed (010) facets: Heterojunctions and photo-Fenton-like synergistic promote Cu+/Cu2+ circulation

Yaxin Guo,Yonggang Liu,Shiduo Hao,Xueying Zhang,Yonghao Yu

Among various advanced oxidation processes , coupling photocatalysis and Fenton-like reactions can overcome the inherent drawbacks of the single technology , which is usually used to remove organic contaminants from wastewater. In this paper, Cu 2 (OH) 3 F/BiOBr composites with (010) facets exposed surface were prepared by a simple hydrothermal method. The degradation efficiency of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCl) solution with Cu 2 (OH) 3 F/BiOBr composite in the photo-Fenton-like system reached 98.8 % within 60 min, and the degradation activity was 4.18 and 2.46 times considerably greater than those of photocatalytic and Fenton-like reactions, respectively. After 5 cycles, the degradation efficiency was still maintained at 89.8 %, demonstrating the exceptional stability of the catalyst. Moreover, based on the characterization of the catalyst, it was found that the high exposure of the crystal plane of the BiOBr material (010) not only speeds up the electron transport between Cu 2 (OH) 3 F and BiOBr and improves the rapid conversion of Cu 2+ ions, but also slows down the rapid electron-hole recombination. Then the free radicals during the reaction were captured, which found that ·OH, ·O 2 − and h + were the main active components in this synergistic degradation system. Finally, the mechanism of Cu 2 (OH) 3 F/BiOBr (010) heterojunction photo-Fenton-like synergistic degradation was proposed. This work can provide an effective pathway for the removal of antibiotics from wastewater.

Triggering sustainable regeneration of Fe2+ by S-scheme Bi2Fe4O9/BiOBr heterojunction toward highly efficient peroxymonosulfate activation for visible-light-driven removal of thiabendazole

Guanwei Peng,Yanyu Xie,Ying Wang,Qi Yu,Youyi Huang,Shuwu Liu,Limin Lu

Peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-assisted photocatalytic processes are economical and green strategies for the treatment of pesticide pollution. However, its degradation efficiency is severely hindered by the sluggish kinetics of active centers regeneration and low charge-transfer. Herein, S-scheme Bi 2 Fe 4 O 9 /BiOBr heterogeneous material was designed to activate PMS for thiabendazole (TBZ) degradation. Bi 2 Fe 4 O 9 and BiOBr have similar structural unit of [Bi 2 O 2 ] 2+ to share the Bi-O bonds, which is favorable to form asymmetric interface and enhance the polarization. Based on these unique characteristics between Bi 2 Fe 4 O 9 and BiOBr, a robust internal electric field in the S-scheme heterojunction is built, which could provide driving force to boost the electron-transfer process and encourage the sustainable regeneration of Fe 2+ . After optimizing the proportion of Bi 2 Fe 4 O 9 on the composite, it was found that 50 wt% Bi 2 Fe 4 O 9 /BiOBr (BFB-50) exhibits the best TBZ removal efficiency after 30 min visible light irradiation, which is 2.25 and 12 folds compared to Bi 2 Fe 4 O 9 and BiOBr, respectively. Furthermore, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and radical trapping experiments indicate that 1 O 2 and SO 4 •- involving oxidation mechanism impart maximum contribution towards TBZ degradation. The possible pathways of TBZ degradation are reasonably proposed by the HPLC-MS and the toxicity evolution of TBZ is appraised using the ECOSAR software. This study provides an insight into the fabrication of S-scheme heterojunction for environment remediation through the photocatalysis/sulfate-mediated advanced oxidation process.

One-pot solvothermal assembly of CeO2/Ce-BiOBr hollow microsphere heterojunctions for efficient degradation of Congo red driven by visible LED light irradiation

Dongsheng Chen,Xiangyang Xu,Pengtao Lei,Jianyu Ge,Yuanlin Tong,Chenyu Huang,Xianghui Fu

Morphology control and heterostructure construction are two essential aspects in designing and synthesizing photocatalysts . Herein, hollow microsphere heterojunctions of CeO 2 and Ce 3+ doped BiOBr (Ce-BiOBr) were fabricated adopting a facile one-pot solvothermal approach. Owing to the positively charged Ce species, the interlamellar repulsion can be reduced and the specific surface area of these microsphere can be increased. The as-generated Ce 4+ /Ce 3+ redox centers can synergistically improve the transfer and separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers. When used to treat Congo red (CR), 0.1CBOB with a Ce/Bi molar ratio of 0.1:1 exhibits the best photodegradation efficiency (94.63%) and kinetic rate (0.01119 min −1 ) under visible light-emitting diode (LED) light irradiation , which are remarkably superior to pure BiOBr and CeO 2 . The results of radical capture experiment show that photogenerated hole (h + ), superoxide radical (·O 2 − ) are the main active species in the process of photocatalytic degradation.

Improved Photo-Carrier Transfer by an Internal Electric Field in BiOBr/Nrich C3N5 3D/2D S-Scheme Heterojunction for Efficiently Photocatalytic Micropollutant Removal

Changjun You,Chunchun Wang,Mingjie Cai,Yanping Liu,Baikang Zhu,Shijie Li

Photocatalytic wastewater decontamination techniques hold eminent promise in mitigating environmental deterioration, yet the lack of distinctive photocatalysts prevents their further large-scale application. Herein, an S-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst BiOBr/C 3 N 5 (BBN) was fabricated for efficiently dislodging micropollutants under visible light. Among the BBN samples, the optimal BBN-2 demonstrated exceptional activity in photocatalytic TC removal with a rate constant of 0.0139 min ‒1 , which surpassed that of pure BiOBr and C 3 N 5 by 0.6 and 2.8 times, respectively. The spatially segregated photoredox sites and efficient photo-carrier separation propelled by an internal electric field are found to play a cardinal role in promoting photoreaction kinetics. Moreover, BBN-2 exhibited remarkable resistance to environmental interference and stability, retaining a high activity level after five runs. Through active radical detection, •O 2 ‒ , h + and •OH were identified as the primary active species in the photocatalytic reaction process. This research would encourage the exploration of C 3 N 5 -based photocatalysts for environmental protection. Download: Download high-res image (91KB) Download: Download full-size image

The BiOBr/PVDF film prepared by in situ deposition and phase transformation has high piezo-photocatalytic performance for efficient degradation of Rh B

Zhou Hengqing,Li Xiao,Gao Guoqi,Sun Huajun,Liu Xiaofang

BiOBr/PVDF composite films with different precursor doping amounts were successfully prepared by in situ deposition phase conversion technology. The physicochemical properties of the composite films were analyzed in detail, and their piezoelectric-photocatalytic performance was systematically investigated. The experimental results showed that BP-0.8 (with a doping amount of 0.8 mmol for the BiOBr precursor) exhibited the best catalytic performance. Under the synergistic effect of visible light irradiation and ultrasonic vibration, the degradation rate of BP-0.8 for 50 mL of 40 mg/L Rhodamine B (Rh B) solution within 60 min could reach 96.73%, and the apparent reaction rate constant (k) of this sample was 0.06198 min⁻ 1 . It was 3.81 times and 27.06 times that of photocatalysis alone and piezoelectric catalysis alone, respectively. The radical capture experiment proved that the main active groups involved in the reaction were h⁺ and ·OH, and the mechanism of piezoelectric photocatalysis of BiOBr/PVDF composite thin films was proposed. In addition, compared with powder catalysts, flexible BiOBr/PVDF membranes were easier to recycle, did not require complex treatment, and still maintained good catalytic activity after ten cycles of testing. This work demonstrated the contribution of the piezoelectric effect to photocatalytic water purification and provided a promising strategy to utilize solar and mechanical energy.

Hierarchical bismuthyl bromide microspheres assembled by laminas as efficient negative material for aqueous alkali battery

Jiuli Chang,Luyao Ma,Wenfang Liang,Fang Xu,Dapeng Wu,Kai Jiang,Yuming Guo,Zhiyong Gao

Bismuth (Bi) based compounds are promising negative materials in aqueous alkali batteries (AABs) for the 3-electron redox chemistry of Bi element within low potentials, the exploration of new Bi-based negative materials is still a meaningful work in this field. Herein, a hierarchical bismuthyl bromide (BiOBr) microspheres material assembled by laminas was prepared via solvothermal reaction and attempted as negative battery material for AAB. The pronounced redox reactions of Bi species in low potential enable high battery capacity, and the porous texture with high hydrophilicity facilitates diffusion of OH – and participation in faradaic reactions. When used as negative battery electrode, the BiOBr could offer decent specific capacity ( C s , 190 mAh g −1 at 1 A g −1 ), rate capability ( C s remained to 163 mAh g −1 at 8 A g −1 ) and cycleability (85% C s retention after 1000 charge–discharge cycles). The AAB based on BiOBr negative electrode could export an energy density ( E cell ) of 61.5 Wh kg −1 at power density ( P cell ) of 558 W kg −1 and good cycleability. The current work showcases valuable application expansion of a traditional BiOBr photocatalyst in battery typed charge storage.

Atom-sharing BiOBr/Bi2S3 Z-scheme heterostructure decorated on flexible carbon fiber cloth as an effective and easily recyclable photocatalyst for Cr(VI) elimination

Meng Lan,Yubo Zhang,Xiaoli Dong,Nan Zheng

The development of flexible membrane-shaped photocatalysts with superior catalytic activity for the treatment of heavy metals in wastewater is of great significance, but it remains an extremely large challenge. In this work, atom co-sharing BiOBr/Bi 2 S 3 Z-scheme heterostructures were constructed in situ on flexible carbon fiber cloth substrate by combining solvothermal and ion exchange method. The prepared CFC/BiOBr/Bi 2 S 3 membrane-shaped photocatalyst exhibits good flexibility, water permeability and retrievability. After adsorption for 1 h and visible-light irradiation for 60 min, controllable and optimized synthesized CFC/BiOBr/Bi 2 S 3 –2 shows exceptional activity towards hexavalent chromium with the removal efficiency of 91%. The excellent reduction performance is attributed to the individual charge transport path of Z-scheme, which provides the driving force for photocarriers transport and excellent redox ability. In addition, the tight interfacial contact between BiOBr and Bi 2 S 3 by sharing bismuth atoms allows for rapid charge transfer and accelerates photogenerated carrier separation. This study provides some constructive insights for developing an immobilized membrane-shaped photocatalyst with excellent photocatalytic activity and easy recovery to treat chrome-containing wastewater, which has a promising application in the field of water remediation.

In-Situ Anchoring Pb-Free Cs3Bi2Br9@BiOBr Quantum Dots on NHx-Rich Silica with Enhanced Blue Emission and Satisfactory Stability for Photocatalytic Toluene Oxidation

Yanmei Guo,Jinxi Chen,Yixin Zhao,Yongbing Lou

Graphical Greener approach to toluene oxidation : Pb-free Cs 3 Bi 2 Br 9 @BiOBr perovskite quantum dots (QDs) are anchored on the surface of NH x -rich monodisperse silica (A−SiO 2 ) via N−Bi chemical bonding to isolate QDs from each other, thus enhancing surface passivation and suppressing optical decay. Additionally, the novel composites as photocatalysts are used to drive the oxidation of toluene and demonstrate astonishing conversion rates with high selectivity. All-inorganic metal halide perovskite quantum dots (QDs) have attracted attention from researchers with their fascinating optoelectronic properties. However, blue-emitting perovskite QDs typically have low photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY). For potential commercial applications, it is preferable to replace Pb with an element having low toxicity. Here, Pb-free Cs 3 Bi 2 Br 9 @BiOBr perovskite QDs were anchored on the surface of NH x -rich monodisperse silica (A−SiO 2 ) via N−Bi chemical bonding to isolate QDs from each other, thus enhancing efficient surface passivation and suppressing optical decay. Compared to unanchored QDs, Cs 3 Bi 2 Br 9 @BiOBr QDs/A−SiO 2 composites exhibited significantly enhanced blue emission performance, the PLQY of which increased from 16.62 % to 77.26 %, in addition to good water and environmental stability. Finally, the novel composites as photocatalysts were used to drive the oxidation of toluene, a template reaction of C(sp 3 )−H bond activation and demonstrated astonishing conversion rates (4317 μmol g −1 h −1 ) with high selectivity (around 87 %).

Polyacrylic acid/polyethylene glycol hybrid antifouling interface for photoelectrochemical immunosensing of MDA-MB-231 cells using BiOBr/FeTPPCl/BiOI co-sensitized composite as matrix

Xin Liu,Dawei Fan,Chenchen Zhang,Xinrong Shao,Hongmin Ma,Yong Zhang,Xueying Wang,Qin Wei,Huangxian Ju

An ultrasensitive photoelectrochemical (PEC) antifouling immunosensor was proposed using BiOBr/FeTPPCl/BiOI as matrix and polyacrylic acid (PAA)/polyethylene glycol (PEG) as hybrid antifouling interface for MDA-MB-231 detection. An indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode was successively modified with bismuth oxybromide (BiOBr) with layered crystal structure, which was sensitized with tetraphenyl iron(Ⅲ) porphyrin chloride (FeTPPCl) to widen the absorption range of visible light, and decorated with bismuth oxyiodide (BiOI) nanosheets to improve the PEC response. The joint action of PAA and PEG could offset the adsorption of non-specific proteins on the immunosensing interface for obtaining good antifouling performance. Based on the specific interaction of sialic acid (SA) on the cytomembrane with 3-aminophenylboronic acid (APBA), and the synergistic antifouling effect of PEG and PAA, a simple PEC immunosensing method was developed for the quantitative determination of MDA-MB-231 cells. This proposed antifouling PEC immunosensor exhibited a wide linear range (1 × 10 2 ∼ 1 × 10 6 cells·mL -1 ) and a low detection limit (30 cells·mL -1 ). The development of antibody-free immunosensors may improve the application for the diagnosis of human breast cancer.

Enhancing visible-light driven photocatalytic performance of BiOBr by self-doping and in-situ deposition strategy: A synergistic effect between Bi5+ and metallic Bi

Qiangshun Wu,Siqi Chai,Hanpei Yang,Zhao Gao,Ruichen Zhang,Lina Wang,Li Kang

A novel composite photocatalyst of Bi/BiOBr-Bi 5+ was successfully developed via a facile two-step procedure. The co-existence of self-doped Bi 5+ and in-situ deposited Bi(M) was evidenced by X-ray diffraction, field-emission transmission electron microscope and X-ray photoelectron spectra. Its photocatalytic performance on the Rhodamine B (RhB) degradation under visible light irradiation displayed a significant improvement compared with that of Bi/BiOBr or BiOBr-Bi 5+ , which was mainly attributed to the synergistic effect between Bi(M) and Bi 5+ . For Bi(M), enhancement of visible-light absorption capacity was beneficial from surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect while the promoted separation of photoinduced charge carriers was attributed to the formation of oxygen vacancies (OVs) and Schottky-barrier. Besides, Bi(M) induced a predominant exposure of (0   1   0) facet, further enhancing photocatalytic performance. Differently, Bi 5+ brought a narrowed bandgap of BiOBr in increasing the carrier density. A plausible mechanism towards RhB degradation was proposed based on analysis of electron transfer pathway and determination of dominant active species. The work offers new routes to enhance the photocatalytic performance of Bi-based materials without introducing any impurities.

Achieving current density of 815 mA/cm² for electrochemical CO₂ reduction to formate by enhancing *OCHO intermediate adsorption through intercalated Bi single atoms in BiOBr

Huawang Zhao,Yuxin Xie,Bihong Lv,Guohua Jing,Yongdan Li

The CO 2 electrochemical reduction reactions (CO 2 ER) to produce high-value formate are crucial for closing the anthropogenic CO 2 cycle. Modulating the adsorption energy between *OCHO and Bi atoms in Bi-based catalysts could enhance both the activity and selectivity for formate formation. Here, a Bi/BiOBr nanosheet with highly dispersed Bi single atoms in intercalations was synthesized through NaBH 4 treatment of BiOBr, which retained the intercalated Bi atoms after electrolysis (Bi/BiOBr-D). The intercalated Bi atoms optimize the Bi-6p band center (0.016 eV) and charge distribution in Bi/BiOBr-D, enhancing the coupling between the O-2p orbitals of *OCHO and the Bi-6p orbitals as well as the electron transfer dynamics between Bi and the *OCHO intermediate, which improves the stability of the *OCHO intermediate during CO 2 ER. Further studies demonstrate that enhanced *OCHO adsorption reduces the Gibbs free energy barrier for the CO 2 →*OCHO process and suppressing the formation of the *H intermediate. Those advantages lead to high selectivity (FE of 96.83 %) in H-type cell, and excellent activity (j HCOO- of 815 mA/cm²) and productivity (15.22 mmol/h·cm²) in flow cell for formate production over Bi/BiOBr-D sample.

Synthesis, characterization and performance evaluation of a novel flower-like ZnZr MOF/FeWO4/BiOBr/Ti photoanode with type II heterojunction and visible light response

Hanlu Zeng,Yunlan Xu,Dengjie Zhong,Qingmei Qiao,Yuqin Yang

The performance of a photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC) depends on its photoelectrode. In this work, a novel three-dimensional flower-like hierarchical photoanode Zn Zr MOF/FeWO 4 /BiOBr/Ti was synthesized, characterized and applied in PFC to degrade rhodamine B and generate electricity simultaneously. The characterization results of XRD, SEM, EDS, FI-IR, DRS, and XPS show that the photoanode was successfully prepared. The loading of FeWO 4 and Zn Zr MOF widened the nanosheet spacing of BiOBr, which enhanced the light absorption intensity, broadened the light absorption band edge from 467.6 nm to 490.2 nm, and increased the photocurrent density from 0.0149 mA/cm 2 to 0.156 mA/cm 2 . The maximum photocurrent density, maximum power density, degradation rate , and FF of the PFC with the prepared photoanode were respectively 0.256 mA·cm −2 , 22.65 μW·cm −2 90.48 % (1 h), and 0.216, which were far higher than those of PFCs with mono and binary photoanodes. The strong photocatalytic performance of the photoanode is attributed to the type II heterojunction formed between BiOBr and FeWO 4 , which helps to separate electron-hole pairs. The main reactive materials responsible for degrading rhodamine B are h + and ·O 2 - . This research provides a new idea for developing an efficient visible light response photoanode.
