PANI/BiVO4 photoanode drived Fe-Br solar redox flow battery system for efficient solar energy conversion and storage

Jiangxin Wang,Yuancheng Zhong,Xu Zhang,Xianfeng Xu,Minmin Liu,Kuanhong Mei,Kaixin Zhang,Weiguo Xu,Shuo Li

The efficient integration of photovoltaic conversion and energy storage technologies is critical to overcoming constraints in solar energy utilization. Solar rechargeable flow batteries (SRFBs) integrate solar energy conversion and storage via photoelectrode-driven redox processes, enabling economically viable pathways for sustainable solar energy storage. However, SRFB development faces limitations of thermodynamic voltage ceilings imposed by photoelectrode/redox couple energy level mismatches and the long-term durability of photoelectrodes. In this study, a PANI/BiVO 4 (PBVO) photoelectrode was fabricated, effectively preventing direct contact between BiVO 4 (BVO) and the electrolyte, thereby suppressing the photocorrosion issues. Meanwhile, [Fe(CN) 6 ] 3- /[Fe(CN) 6 ] 4- and Br - /Br 3- (Fe-Br) redox pairs with high redox reversibility were used in the SRFB system. The designed PBVO Fe-Br SRFB achieved ultra-long stability and a sustained photocurrent for up to 50 h. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the charge transfer pathway in the PBVO electrode within the Fe-Br SRFB was verified, providing insights into the design of SRFBs.

Photoelectrochemical cell with Co3O4/BiVO4 photoanode and CoFe2O4 cathode: An efficient persulfate activation system for organic pollutants degradation

Xuanran Geng,RenFu Zhang,Peiyun Zhang,Xiaoying Yuan,Can Yang,Yidong Hou,Jinshui Zhang,Meirong Huang

The integration of photoelectrochemical (PEC) technology with persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes has emerged as a promising approach for efficient pollutant removal in environmental remediation. Herein, we developed a novel PEC system combining a Co 3 O 4 /BiVO 4 (CO/BVO) photoanode with a CoFe 2 O 4 /carbon paper (CFO/CP) cathode for activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) toward bisphenol A (BPA) removal. The enhanced photogenerated charge separation in CO/BVO and the PMS activation by CFO/CP in the PEC system enabled complete BPA degradation within 60 minutes under optimized conditions (1.0 V bias, 1.0 mM PMS). The influence of PMS concentration, applied bias, pH, and coexisting anions on BPA degradation was thoroughly investigated. Radical scavenging experiments combined with electron paramagnetic resonance analysis identified •SO 4 - , •OH, and photogenerated holes as dominant reactive species. The system also exhibited good stability over five consecutive cycles, with minimal metal ion leaching. This work demonstrates the potential of an efficient PEC system integrated with sulfate radical-based AOPs, offering an innovative approach for organic pollutant remediation in wastewater treatment.

Organic semiconductor poly-2,6-diaminoanthraquinone composite and Bi loading synergistically enhance the photoelectrochemical cathodic protection performance of BiVO4

Juan Liu,Yingnan Qin,Meiqi Wang,Hengjun Liu,Tao Zheng,Jing Tian,Jing Wang

BiVO 4 -based materials have attracted extensive research as advanced photoanode for photogenerated cathodic protection. However, the performance of BiVO 4 -based photoanodes is greatly hindered by its weak charge migration and positive conduction band potential. Herein, poly-2,6-diaminoanthraquinone (PDAAQ)/Bi was grafted on BiVO 4 to improve the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers and enhance the reducing ability of photogenerated electrons. Studies show that a type II heterojunction can be formed between PDAAQ and BiVO 4 , which accelerates the separation of photogenerated carriers at the interface. In addition, the Bi monomers anchored on BiVO 4 /PDAAQ then expand the light absorption range through the surface plasmon resonance effect. Consequently, the obtained BiVO 4 /PDAAQ/Bi photoanode exhibits a promising photocurrent density of 40 μA·cm -2 , while the photoinduced potential drop is 540 mV, which is approximately 1.4 times of BiVO 4 materials. These outcomes provide general ideas for the design of organic-inorganic heterozygous systems for achieving eco-friendly corrosion protection.

Efficient degradation of bisphenol A with MoS2/BiVO4 hetero-nanoflower as a heterogenous peroxymonosulfate activator under visible-light irradiation

Xiao Zheng,Xiaodong Zhang,Yanpeng Cai,Shan Zhao,Shuguang Wang

Photocatalyst activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) under visible-light irradiation to construct a photo-Fenton system has shown great application prospect for environmental remediation. In this study, MoS 2 /BiVO 4 heterojunction nanoflowers were successfully synthesized by hydrothermal method and used to activate PMS under visible-light to achieve highly efficient degradation of bisphenol A (BPA). The constructed heterojunction showed excellent catalytic activity , which was attributed to the synergistic effect of effective separation of charge carriers and PMS activation . In the MoS 2 /BiVO 4 /PMS/vis system, 2-MoS 2 /BiVO 4 (2-MB) exhibited the highest degradation rate constant for BPA (0.1747 min −1 ), which was 91.9 times of pure MoS 2 and 38.0 times of pure BiVO 4 , respectively. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and radical quenching experiments demonstrated that the oxidative degradation of BPA was mainly participated by SO 4 − , OH, 1 O 2 and h + active species. Through the analysis of energy band structure and element valence state of photocatalyst and the identification of reaction intermediates, the degradation mechanism and degradation pathways were proposed. In addition, MoS 2 /BiVO 4 heterojunction showed high catalytic ability for various organic pollutants (herbicides, pesticide intermediates, antibiotics and dyes), and common anions (Cl − , SO 4 2− and NO 3 − ) and humic acid (HA) had little effect on its degradation efficiency. This study has provided a new solution for the use of heterojunction photocatalysts for visible-light assisted PMS activation to achieve highly efficient degradation of organic pollutants.

Hydrothermal synthesis of Mo,N-CQDs Co-modified BiVO4 for enhanced photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue under visible light

Cong Zhang,Huidong Xiong,Zhonghao Zhao,Xiaoyu Sun,Jingliang Cheng,Chaxiu Guo,Huadong Liu

In response to the need for efficient elimination of methylene blue (MB) from dye-containing wastewater, a Mo, N-co-doped carbon quantum dot-modified BiVO 4 (5% Mo, N-CQDs/BiVO 4 ) composite photocatalyst was developed. Pristine BiVO 4 suffers from rapid charge carrier recombination and limited visible-light utilization. Introduction of Mo, N-CQDs establishes a synergistic enhancement mechanism: (1) Mo, N-CQDs act as electron mediators, improving interfacial charge separation and migration, as evidenced by reduced charge transfer resistance. Mo doping introduces impurity energy levels that trap electrons and retard recombination, while nitrogen doping enhances electron tunneling and reduces interfacial resistance. (2) UV-Vis DRS confirms bandgap narrowing and enhanced visible-light absorption. (3) Photoelectrochemical analysis reveals significantly enhanced photocurrent response and reduced charge transfer resistance, confirming improved charge separation efficiency. Under visible light, the composite achieved a degradation rate constant of 0.04089 min −1 toward MB, a 3.31-fold enhancement over pure BiVO 4 , with >95% removal within 80 min. Radical trapping identified superoxide radicals (·O 2 − ) and holes (h + ) as the predominant active species, with h + contributing ∼62% of the activity. The catalyst retained 88.65% of its initial efficiency after four cycles, demonstrating good stability. This study provides a viable charge-regulation strategy using multi-element co-doped carbon quantum dots for semiconductor modification, highlighting its potential in dye wastewater treatment.

Harnessing the photothermal effect of PDA-mediated plasmon Ag NPs to activate fluorinated BiVO4 for enhanced solar water oxidation

Nannan Chen,Lianqing Yu,Chong Liu,Zhe Li,Xiaohan Jin,Yaping Zhang,Haifeng Zhu

The efficiency of solar-driven water splitting has long been constrained by the poor utilization of the full-spectrum solar energy by semiconductors. This study leverages the localized photothermal effect of polydopamine (PDA)-mediated plasmonic Ag nanoparticles (NPs) to activate small-polaron hopping conduction in fluorinated BiVO 4 . This activation enhances light absorption and photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance. Experimental evidence indicates that fluorination optimizes both bulk properties and surface wettability. Concurrently, the PDA acts as a multifunctional interfacial layer, ensuring robust adhesion of Ag NPs and serving as an effective hole-transport medium. The synergistic photothermal effect of the intrinsic broadband absorption from PDA and the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) from Ag NPs endows the photoanode with a photocurrent density of 4.96 mA cm −2 at 1.23 V RHE , photo-stability exceeding 10 h, and enhanced light-harvesting capability. Further mechanistic studies unveil that fluorination induces the elongation of local chemical bonds, facilitating reducing the reaction energy barrier. Notably, the loading of PDA@Ag photothermal layer introduces valence band tail states, which effectively narrow the bandgap and accelerate hole transfer. This work offers a novel paradigm for pioneering utilization of photothermal materials to convert thermal energy dissipation into a valuable resource for enhancing PEC performance.

Interfacial charge regulation on porphyrin copper metal-organic frameworks /BiVO4 S-scheme nanocomposites for CO2 photoreduction in pure water

Zhenlong Zhao,Shuai Xu,Ji Bian,Hongjun Wu,Xinyu Wei,Donghui Hu,Zhuo Li,Ziqing Zhang,Liqiang Jing

The construction of S-scheme heterojunction is an effective approach to achieve high-efficiency photocatalytic conversion, where efficient interfacial charge transfer plays a crucial role. Herein, two-dimensional reduced graphene oxide (rGO) modulated porphyrin copper metal–organic frameworks/BiVO 4 (Cu-MOF/rGO/BVO) S-scheme nanocomposites with wide visible-light response are manufactured for photoreduction CO 2 . The optimized one exhibits approximately 13-fold photoactivity improvement compared with the pristine BVO nanosheets in pure water system. The high photoactivity is mainly ascribed to the S-scheme charge transfer between Cu-MOF and BVO and accelerated interfacial charge transfer modulated by rGO. The introduced rGO is capable of not only forming strong chemical interactions with both Cu-MOF and BVO, but also providing “highway” for electrons transfer, efficiently strengthening the S-scheme charge transfer. Moreover, it is revealed that the porous structure and well-defined Cu 2 (COO) 4 node of Cu-MOF creates a microenvironment conducive to CO 2 activation mainly based on electrochemical reduction measurement, in situ diffuse reflectance infrared spectra and density functional theory. This work highlights the importance of interfacial charge regulation for constructing S-scheme heterojunction and presents a feasible avenue for efficient conversion of solar-to-fuels.

NiFe-LDH/BiVO4–BOD Photocatalytic Fuel Cell for Bias-Free and Selective 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural Oxidation to 2,5-Furandicarboxylic Acid

Yuehan Zhang,Panpan Zhao,Zhixuan Yu,Jianguo Zhao,Junfeng Zhai,Shaojun Dong

The efficient conversion of renewable biomass into value-added products is essential for sustainable development. In this work, we report a two-chamber photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC) consisting of a NiFe-LDH/BiVO4/FTO photoanode and a BOD/TCPP/BP/ITO biocathode, which allows for the simultaneous accomplishment of energy conversion and bias-free production of 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA). After optimization, the PFC achieves a maximum power density of 859.0 ± 3.0 μW cm–2 at 0.52 V. TEMPO-mediated 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) oxidation occurs spontaneously within the PFC upon illumination due to the potential difference between the photoanode and biocathode, effectively and selectively converting HMF to FDCA with a yield (%) and Faradaic efficiency of approximately 100%, and possesses good durability after six cycles (30 h) of FDCA production (retaining 90.8% of its initial value). Therefore, the proposed PFC offers a promising solution to the challenges associated with the conversion of renewable biomass.

Construction and photocatalytic performance of dual Z-scheme BiVO4/AgBr/Ag2MoO4 heterojunction for enhanced photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B

Xiaohua Zheng,Huilin Han,Ruomeng Zhang,Jingting Yang

Photocatalysis is a green and efficient technology for degrading organic pollutants. However, its development is restricted by the high recombination rate of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. In this study, double-Z-type BiVO 4 /AgBr/Ag 2 MoO 4 ternary photocatalysts were successfully synthesized by a one-step precipitation method at room temperature, and their photocatalytic performance for degrading rhodamine B (RhB) was investigated. The composition and microstructure of the photocatalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), cold field scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), specific surface area testing, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results of ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV–Vis DRS), photoluminescence (PL), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) indicate that the optical properties of the photocatalysts are good. Under visible light irradiation, the BiVO 4 /AgBr/Ag 2 MoO 4 photocatalyst with Ag 2 MoO 4 mass fraction of 12% achieved a degradation rate > 99% within 12 min, with degradation rates 260.5, 6.1, and 161.7 times that of pure BiVO 4 , AgBr, and Ag 2 MoO 4 , respectively. In addition, holes (h + ) and superoxide radicals (·O 2− ) are the main active species, and hydroxyl radicals (·OH) also have a certain influence during the photocatalysis process, according to the active species capture experiments. This study demonstrates that the ternary photocatalyst has the potential to efficiently degrade organic pollutants under sunlight.

Unraveling the mechanism underlying the enhanced photoresponse in BiVO4-modified TiO2 nanorod arrays for quasi-solid-state solar cells

Defeng Wu,Bing Zhou,Yun Li,Siyu Lu,Zongbiao Liu,Jianlong Zhang,Mingliang Ma,Na Wang,Xin Shang,Kaiying Wang

Enhancing the visible light response of wide-bandgap semiconductors is crucial for the advancement of oxide-based solar devices. Here, we report a TiO 2 nanorod array (TNRAs)/BiVO 4 heterojunction photoanode fabricated via a cyclic spin-coating strategy, where the number of coating cycles (10, 15 or 20) is used to regulate the deposition of BiVO 4 . The formation of a type-II band alignment facilitated efficient charge separation, while the incorporation of BiVO 4 extended the light absorption from ∼400 nm to ∼500 nm, as confirmed by UV–Vis spectroscopy. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy revealed reduced charge transfer resistance, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations showed that the bandgap narrowed and visible-light absorption increased with increasing BiVO 4 thickness. The optimized heterojunction (15 deposition cycles) delivers a photocurrent density of 1.41 mA cm - 2 in the quasi-solid-state solar cell ∼19 times that of the pristine TNRAs (0.075 mA cm - 2 ) with a power conversion efficiency of 0.277%. The device also exhibits remarkable photocurrent stability in the quasi solid electrolyte (QSE). This study elucidates the interplay between heterointerface structure and optoelectronic performance and offers a scalable route to engineering stable, high-efficiency, oxide-based solar energy systems.

Efficient degradation of imidacloprid in wastewater by a novel p-n heterogeneous Ag2O/BiVO4/diatomite composite under hydrogen peroxide

Jing Chen,Qifang Ren,Chunshan Xu,Bin Chen,Shaohua Chen,Yi Ding,Zhen Jin,Wanmi Guo,Xinyu Jia

In this study, Ag 2 O/BiVO 4 /diatomite composite with p-n heterojunction structure was synthesized by simple hydrothermal method with diatomite as carrier. It was found that under the action of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), the imidacloprid (IMD) could be effectively degraded by the composite. Systemic evaluations was conducted on effects of pH value, catalyst dosage, H 2 O 2 concentration, initial IMD concentration, and anion on how effeciently this new photocatalytic composite can degrade IMD. The results show that the p-n heterojunction formed between the two contact surfaces of Ag 2 O nanoparticle and BiVO 4 promotes the charge transfer between the interfaces, inhibits recombination of electrons and holes, and thus significantly improves the catalytic performance. The stability and reusability of Ag 2 O/BiVO 4 /diatomite composites were tested with ICP experiment and cyclic experiment. Active substance capture experiment and ESR reveal the photocatalytic reaction mechanism and confirm that superoxide radical ( O 2 − ), hydroxyl radical ( OH), and h + can promote the degradation of IMD. The degradation products and the intermediates of IMD were identified through LC-MS, on a basis of which the possible transformation pathway was proposed. In situ synthesis of p-type Ag 2 O and n-type BiVO 4 heterojunction composites has opened a new direction for photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants.
