Early gas breakthrough during CO2 flooding is often aggravated by dominant flow channels formed in prior waterflooding. We developed a CO2-triggered silicate system (SAS) for proactive profile control in high-temperature and high-salinity reservoirs. Owing to its low initial viscosity, SAS can be preferentially placed in high-permeability channels before CO2 injection. Dissolved CO2 then lowers pH and triggers silicate condensation, leading to in situ formation of silica particles that selectively plug dominant flow paths. The generated inorganic Si–O–Si network endows the system with strong thermal and salinity tolerance. Characterizations including FTIR, XPS, TGA, SEM, particle size analysis, pH/conductivity monitoring, HOMO–LUMO analysis and molecular dynamics simulations were conducted to reveal the acid-triggered structural evolution induced by CO2 dissolution. Sand-pack displacement experiments further demonstrate that SAS pretreatment increases total oil recovery from 49.5% to 67.2%. This CO2-triggered in situ particle system provides a simple and effective strategy for mitigating gas channeling and enhancing CO2 flooding performance in harsh reservoirs.

Lithium carbon dioxide (Li-CO 2 ) batteries exhibit an ultrahigh theoretical energy density of 1876 Wh∙kg −1 and enable potential CO 2 capture for carbon neutrality. However, acidic CO 2 reacts with Li-metal anodes (CO 2 shuttle effect), causing pulverization and battery failure. Herein, we propose a separator gas barrier design strategy to address the critical issue of CO 2 shuttle-induced corrosion in Li- CO 2 batteries. The core of this strategy lies in a diamond-like carbon (DLC)-modified separator, which is engineered to possess exceptional gas barrier properties. Theoretical calculations and systematic experimental verifications collectively confirm that this separator efficiently suppresses the CO 2 shuttle effect, fundamentally mitigating Li-anode corrosion. Notably, the Li-CO 2 battery with this separator achieves a long cycle life over 1200 h (500 mAh∙g −1 , no extrinsic metal-based catalyst)—over 5 times longer than that with a pristine separator (240 h). This work provides a novel, universal design paradigm to enhance the cycling stability of metal-gas batteries (e.g., Li-O 2 , Na-CO 2 ), addressing a long-standing challenge in high-performance metal-gas energy storage systems by using separators as “gas barriers” to protect metal anodes.

Electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction to multi‑carbon products offers a sustainable route to fuels and chemicals, yet suffers from sluggish C C coupling and competing hydrogen evolution. Here, we report a rationally engineered Cu 3 N/Cu@C heterostructure catalyst that delivers markedly enhanced CO 2 electroreduction performance. The optimized catalyst achieves a 65.3% Faradaic efficiency toward multi‑carbon products and a half-cell energy efficiency of 35.3% at −1.1 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode. Combined in situ attenuated total reflectance surface enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations reveal that interfacial charge transfer at the Cu 3 N/Cu junction modulates the electronic structure of Cu sites, elevates local pH, strengthens CO 2 adsorption and activation, and suppresses hydrogen evolution. Importantly, the tailored interface facilitates asymmetric C C coupling between *CO and *COH intermediates, stabilizing the key *OCCOH species and accelerating multi‑carbon products formation. This work underscores heterointerface engineering as a powerful strategy to control reaction microenvironments and C C coupling pathways, guiding the development of high-performance copper-based CO 2 reduction reaction catalysts.

The MPAN-g-HEC product exhibits CO 2 responsiveness. • CO 2 gas protonates MPAN-g-HEC to MPAN + -g-HEC. • MPAN + -g-HEC can enhance the stability of CNF-based Pickering emulsion. • Alternating CO 2 and N 2 in the system switches the emulsification and separation. Cellulose has been widely used in conventional Pickering emulsions, yet its application in stimulus-responsive Pickering emulsions remains relatively limited. In this paper, cellulose-based CO 2 /N 2 stimuli-responsive polymer compounds (MPAN-g-HEC) were prepared through the hydrophobic modification of hydroxyethyl cellulose using the maleopimaric acid 2-dimethylaminopropylamine imide with a tertiary amine group (MPAN). The grafting rate of MPAN-g-HEC was controlled by adjusting the HEC-to-MPAN mass ratio. Specifically, five grafted products (MPAN-g-HEC I∼V) were prepared, and the grafting rate increased from 9.24% to 48.43%. The addition of CO 2 resulted in the protonation of MPAN-g-HEC, converting it to the MPAN + -g-HEC. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) values of MPAN + -g-HEC ranged from 0.28 to 0.88 g/L, with corresponding surface tensions of 40.8–43.3 mN/m. The product with the best performance (MPAN-g-HEC IV, abbreviated as MPAN-g-HEC) is used to enhance the stability of Pickering emulsions of cellulose nanofibers. These stimuli-responsive Pickering emulsions exhibit stability due to the electrostatic interactions between MPAN + -g-HEC and CNF, as well as the formation of interfacial films at the oil-water interface. In addition, the alternating passage of CO 2 and N 2 can achieve the interconversion between emulsification and demulsification, and the process is reversible. Rheological tests show that the G′ and G″ tend first to decrease and then increase, indicating that the Pickering emulsion first undergoes damage and then reforms a network structure. Asymmetric Ni-N-Cl sites are built by NH 4 Cl vaporization. • Ni-N-Cl overcomes the kinetic challenges and delivers excellent CO 2 reduction performance. • XAFS, DFT and CW-ODMR reveal the asymmetric coordination mechanism. • Cl coordination creates electron-rich Ni centers with shifted d-band. • Ni-N-Cl achieves 86.2% CO Faradaic efficiency and enables durable Zn-CO 2 batteries for 53 h operation. Electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction reaction to value-added chemicals represents a promising pathway for sustainable carbon utilization. However, the symmetric coordination environment of conventional M-N 4 single atom sites restricts electronic structure regulation and limits their intrinsic activity. Herein, we develop an asymmetric Ni-N-Cl coordination structure synthesized via high-temperature NH 4 Cl vaporization assisted strategy. This Cl-mediated asymmetric coordination induces a distinct charge redistribution, generates an electron enriched Ni center and an upward shift of the d-band center closer to the Fermi level. These intrinsic modulations significantly facilitate CO 2 activation and proton transfer to the *COOH, thereby lowering the reaction energy barrier. Consequently, the Ni-N-Cl catalyst achieves a CO Faradaic efficiency of 99.67% at -0.7 V vs. RHE in H cell and 17 h long term stability at -100 mA cm -2 in flow cell. Furthermore, this catalyst delivers a peak power density of 1.62 mW cm -2 and a durability of 53 h. This study provides a general methodology for the rational design of asymmetric single atom catalysts through orbital engineering for high-efficiency energy storage technologies. Layered double hydroxide (LDH) bearing numerous hydroxyl groups shows high affinity with CO 2 and is promising in mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) based CO 2 capture. However, its non-porous structure limits the further improvement of CO 2 permeability. In this work, 3D hollow CoNi-LDH nanocages were developed to construct low-resistance and CO 2 -philic transport channel in MMM by in-situ etching of ZIF-67 template. The resultant material exhibits hollow structure with cavity size of about 500 nm, mesopores and micropores from LDH stacking and ZIF-67 template. The outer layered CoNi-LDH nanosheets can attract more CO 2 molecules by their abundant hydroxyl groups, resulting in an improvement in dissolution selectivity of CO 2 over N 2 . Meanwhile, the tortuous gas diffusion paths originated from 2D nanosheet stacking can further enhance the CO 2 selectivity over N 2 . Moreover, the hollow nanocages provide CO 2 molecules with fast transport path, resulting in high CO 2 permeability. As a result, compared with pure Pebax membrane and 2D LDH/Pebax MMM, all the 3D hollow CoNi-LDH/Pebax MMMs present enhanced CO 2 permeability. The 3D hollow CoNi-LDH-2h/Pebax MMM performs the highest CO 2 permeability of 135.49 Barrer, which are increased by 141.95% and 71.50% than those of the above two membranes, respectively. The selectivity of 3D hollow CoNi-LDH-2h/Pebax MMM is about 26.30% higher than that of the pure Pebax membrane. The present membrane presents comparable CO 2 capture capacity in contrast with most reported Pebax based MMMs and surpasses the Robeson upper bond. Together with the good long-term stability, the 3D hollow CoNi-LDH nanocages are believed to be a promising candidate for MMMs to improve CO 2 capture.

The exploitation of highly active and stable catalysts for reduction of CO2 and water oxidation is one of the approaches to facilitate scalable and sustainable CO2 reduction potentially at the industrial scale. Herein, a feasible strategy to rationally build an overall CO2 + H2O electrocatalytic reaction device is the preparation and matchup of a high-performance CO2 reduction catalyst and low-cost and highly active oxygen anode catalyst. A heterostructured nanosheet, γ-NiOOH/NiCO3/Ni(HCOO)2, exhibited superior catalytic activity in the oxygen evolution reaction, and was integrated with CoPc/Fe–N–C to build an overall CO2 + H2O cell with a current density of 10 mA cm−2 at a very low cell voltage of 1.97 V, and the faradaic deficiency of CO2 to CO was maintained at greater than 90% at 1.9 V.

Summary The electrocatalytic reduction of CO 2 is an attractive method for reducing greenhouse gases and producing chemical feedstocks. However, the activation of C=O bonds limits the reaction kinetics; therefore, understanding the mechanism of C=O bond activation can guide the design of high-performance catalysts. Here, we investigate the C=O bond activation mechanism during the electroreduction of CO 2 to CO on ZnO. Using in situ experimental techniques and quantum chemical calculations , we find that defects in ZnO promote the formation of Zn–ZnO x interfaces during CO 2 reduction, which mediates an intimate-junction exciton state by the metal semiconductor heterophase. This promotes the formation of CO 2 radicals, exposing electron donation centers for CO 2 adsorption and redox centers for cleaving stable C=O bonds. The internal electric field generated by the heterojunction enhances the initial C=O activation by facilitating the interaction between the metalized Zn d-orbital and the O π -orbital in CO 2 .

The reaction of cellulose with CO2 in the presence of various organic superbases resulted in a novel CO2 derivative dissolution strategy for cellulose, presenting a special solvent system for cellulose dissolution processing and derivatization. The properties of the cellulose solution are important for the preparation of particular regenerated materials via dissolution processing. Herein, properties of the cellulose solution in a CO2/1.8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene/dimethyl sulfoxide (CO2/DBU/DMSO) solvent system were first systematically studied, and it was found that the apparent viscosities of cellulose solutions were highly dependent on the cellulose type, concentration and temperature. The overlap concentrations (c*) were determined to be 2 and 0.6 wt% for the microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) and wood pulp solutions, respectively. The Cox–Merz rule was valid for cellulose solutions in the CO2/DBU/DMSO solvent system. Furthermore, taking advantage of the reversible chemistry of CO2 in this solvent system, a reversible CO2-controlled sol–gel transition of the newly achieved cellulose solution in CO2/DBU/DMSO was identified by dynamic rheology of measuring the temperature dependence of storage modulus (G′) and loss modulus (G′′). Furthermore, the interesting CO2-controlled sol–gel transition was developed via integrated thermal-induced CO2 release and anti-solvent extraction for the preparation of regenerated cellulosic gel materials and then cellulose films with a tensile strength of 44.3 MPa. Interestingly, it was found that the regenerated cellulose through this approach turned out to be a cellulose IVI crystalline structure.

Carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) as greenhouse gas is the primary cause of global warming. One of the ideal routes to remedy CO 2 emission is to transform it to hydrocarbons by photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 . However, poor yield and product selectivity of photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 pose significant challenges to its widespread applications. To address this critical issue, a coupled system that integrates photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 with photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC) is developed for direct power generation using CO 2 . In this coupled system, the products by photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 works as the fuels for the PFC to directly generate electricity. Direct power generation by this coupled system is demonstrated via only in the presence of CO 2 as the input under illumination. A short circuit current density of 0.175 mA/cm 2 and a maximum power output of 0.110 mW/cm 2 are yielded for the case with the supply of CO 2 , which are much higher than those without CO 2 . Moreover, it is interesting to find that the fuel concentrations at the PFC outlet are even higher than those at the PFC inlet, implying that the coupled system proposed in this study can not only generate the electricity but also yield the solar fuels. This work opens a new avenue for the CO 2 utilization toward direct power generation.

Monoethanolamine (MEA) solution has been used widely in the post-combustion CO 2 capture process; however, the high heat duty and reaction temperature (e.g. 125°C) for MEA regeneration leads to a high energy requirement (nearly 70–80% of the total running cost). We report the use of solid particles (H-Zeolite Socony Mobile-5 (HZSM-5), quartz, and activated carbon) to facilitate the mass transfer of CO 2 bubble nucleation and enhance the CO 2 desorption rate. The results show that the mass transfer of CO 2 from liquid phase to gas phase is the rate-determining step, rather than the chemical reaction. The addition of HZSM-5 particles in the solution significantly enhanced CO 2 bubble nucleation by providing nucleation sites and gas cavities, leading to an average CO 2 desorption rate enhancement of 43.2%, and an energy consumption reduction of 23.3%. This process also operated at ∼95°C, which is a much lower temperature than that used in the commercial process and is feasible for industrial applications. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Using porous materials to selectively adsorb CO 2 from flue gas or natural gas is a promising method for mitigating CO 2 emission and purifying methane. Here, we synthesized an L-aspartic acid based microporous metal-organic framework (MIP-202) and studied its adsorptive separation performance for CO 2 /CH 4 and CO 2 /N 2 mixtures. Results show that MIP-202 had ultrahigh CO 2 /CH 4 (72.9 and 241.5 for CO 2 /CH 4 = 50/50 and 10/90, respectively) and CO 2 /N 2 (1,950,000 and 2129.1 for CO 2 /N 2 = 50/50 and 15/85, respectively) IAST selectivities at 298 K and 100 kPa. The high selectivity was verified by the calculations of Henery’s law selectivity and breakthrough experiments. Metropolis Monte Carlo simulation calculations show that CO 2 with greater polarizability and quadruple moment tends to occupy the pore walls of large cages with higher polarity, while the less polar CH 4 or N 2 majorly being adsorbed in the pore walls of small cages with lower polarity, resulting in the ultrahigh CO 2 /CH 4 and CO 2 /N 2 separation selectivities. MIP-202 exhibits low CO 2 adsorption enthalpy (17.2–30.7 kJ/mol), superior persistent reusability after five cyclic adsorption experiments, easy desorption performance at 298 K, moderate water and moisture stability, good stability under dry and humid SO 2 atmosphere, and low ligand cost ($36/kg). MIP-202 extrudates were prepared by an extrusion molding method using hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) as the binder and they retained 97.35% CO 2 uptake of MIP-202 powder at room temperature and pressure. This work shows that MIP-202 is an industrially promising material for the separation of CO 2 /CH 4 and CO 2 /N 2 mixtures.
