While mechanochemical reactions have garnered attention for their broad applicability and readily attainable operational conditions, their utilization in wastewater purification, particularly for the treatment of chromium-containing effluents, remains limited. In this study, we present a novel mechanism for ball milling-mediated reduction and immobilization of hexavalent chromium, achieving removal efficiencies of up to 93.7% over a pH range of 2.0 to 10.0. This mechanism advocates for the concurrent effect of mechanical force to facilitate the reduction of Cr(VI) to its stable surface form (Cr(III)), and the precipitation of BaCrO 4 , thereby immobilizing the chromium species. Density functional theory calculations demonstrate that oxygen vacancies can efficiently adsorb Cr(VI), thereby imparting electrons to it, consequently facilitating reduction processes. This study provides novel insights into metal ion-contaminated wastewater treatment and the role of naturally generated mechanical forces on the redox processes of chromium species.

Cr/Co-MOFs were synthesized via a solvothermal method using chromium acetate and cobalt chloride hexahydrate as metal ions, and trimeric acid as the organic ligand. The structures of Cr/Co-MOFs were characterized using Fourier infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy techniques. These Cr/Co-MOFs were used for removing organic contaminants in wastewater treatment. Fleroxacin and Rhodamine B (RhB) were specifically selected as target molecules in this study to evaluate the removal efficiency based on the mass of Co/Cr-MOFs, concentrations of organic contaminants, and adsorption time. Experimental findings indicated that at a Co/Cr-MOFs dosage of 100 mg, with initial concentrations of Fleroxacin (30 ppm) and RhB (20 ppm), removal efficiencies achieved were 95% and 99%, respectively. Within a timeframe of 5 h, Co/Cr-MOFs attained adsorption capacities amounting to 269.6 mg·g −1 for fleroxacin and 289.5 mg·g −1 for RhB. The interaction between Co/Cr-MOFs and fleroxacin, as well as RhB, is primarily attributed to factors such as pore size, hydrogen bonding, electrostatic charge, and π–π interactions. Moreover, theoretical analysis corroborated these experimental results by demonstrating conformity between the adsorption process and both second-order kinetic model equations alongside Langmuir isotherm model equations. Collectively, the experimental data combined with theoretical investigations underscore the practical significance associated with employing Co/Cr-MOFs for effective eradication of organic pollutants.

The reduction and adsorption of Cr(VI) are critical challenges in environmental remediation. In this study, corn straw modified with polyethyleneimine (PEI-CS) was synthesized as carriers to immobilize Bacillus licheniformis MZ1 (PEI-CS-MZ1), enabling simultaneous Cr(VI) reduction and Cr(III) fixation in a high efficiency. Notably, PEI-CS-MZ1 achieved 95.61 % and 81.96 % Cr(VI) reduction under extreme conditions (pH 8 and 11 % salinity), respectively. Furthermore, this composite completely reduced 100 mg/L Cr(VI) within 24 h while maintaining 76.96 % Cr(III) fixation, which was significantly superior to free MZ1 and PEI-CS. PEI-CS-MZ1 also demonstrated exceptional stability, retaining 89.8 % Cr(VI) reduction after 10 operational cycles. This strategy revealed that Cr(VI) reduction and Cr(III) fixation were accomplished via cooperativity of bio-reduction, chemical reduction, chemisorption, and physical adsorption. This work provides theoretical foundations for designing immobilized microbial systems toward efficient remediation of Cr(VI)-contaminated wastewater.

Removing hexavalent chromium (Cr⁶⁺) from wastewater is of great significance for ecological environment, human health, and sustainable industrial development. In this work, Cu-Al2O3 nano powders and Cu-Al2O3@AD nanocomposite were prepared by coprecipitation method, which were used to adsorb Cr⁶⁺. The materials Cu-Al2O3@AD have ordered structures, and rich functional groups as verified by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), energy spectrum analysis (EDS), and field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). Then, Cu-Al2O3@AD was used as adsorbents for fast and efficient removal of Cr⁶⁺ from aqueous solution by batch equilibrium experiments. The experimental results demonstrate that when the adsorbent dosage was10 g/L, the pH value was 3, the initial concentration of Cr6+ was 2 μ g/mL, and the reaction temperature was 30℃, the adsorption performance of Cu-Al2O3@AD is the best, with a removal rate of up to 90%. The adsorption kinetic and isotherm data follow the pseudo-first-order equation and the Langmuir model, respectively. The adsorption mechanisms of Cr⁶⁺ are ascribed to the monolayer adsorption.

A photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor based on a BiVO 4 semiconductor and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) was successfully prepared for the sensitive detection of Cr(Ⅵ) ions. The calcination temperature was found to be very important for the PEC properties of BiVO 4 . The BiVO 4 -modified indium tin oxide electrode (ITO/BiVO 4 ) calcined at 300 °C generated a low cathodic photocurrent response under light irradiation. BiVO 4 /AuNPs materials were coupled via electrostatic adsorption to enhance the photoelectric conversion performance of BiVO 4 . The use of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) to modify electrodes reduce the background current. The developed ITO/BiVO 4 /AuNPs/L-Cys PEC sensor was used to detect of Cr(VI). The Cr(Ⅵ) ion concentrations showed a good linearity between 10 pM and 1 μM with a detection limit of 9.1 pM (S/N = 3). The prepared PEC sensor exhibited high sensitivity, a wide linear range, and good selectivity. This work provides a promising platform for the analytical detection of heavy metal ions.

Photoelectrocatalytic approaches show promise for contaminate removal in wastewater through redox reactions. However, the direct treatment of very low concentration heavy metals is a challenging task. Copper bismuth oxide is considered as a potential photocathode material due to its appropriate bandgap width and excellent light absorption properties. In this work, we utilize copper bismuth oxide photoelectrodes with micrometer-scale pores to achieve the efficient and complete reduction of micromolar-level hexavalent chromium(VI) in wastewater. In a continuous 180 min experiment, the reduction rate of 5 µM hexavalent chromium reached 97%, which is an order lower than the drinking standard. Such a process was facilitated by the unique hierarchical microstructure of the oxide thin film and the porous morphology. On the other hand, the structural evolution during the operation was analyzed. A surface passivation was observed, suggesting the possible long-term practical application of this material. This study serves as an important reference for the application of photoelectrocatalysis in addressing Cr(VI) pollution in wastewater, with implications for improving water quality and environmental protection.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), as promising photocatalysts, have been widely used in Cr(VI) removal due to their high porosity and structural tunability, whereas the simple hybridization of MOFs was not beneficial for the separation of photogenerated carriers. In this study, a novel Al-doped and hydroxyl-functionalized Zr-based MOF (named as Al/Zr-UiO-66-(OH)2) was synthesized via dual strategies of bimetallization and hydroxylation. Characterization results confirmed that the incorporation of Al and hydroxyl groups effectively reduced the bandgap and enhanced separation efficiency of photogenerated charge. Al/Zr-UiO-66-(OH)2 (1:5) exhibited outstanding photocatalytic reduction performance towards Cr(VI) (99.3% within 2 h) under visible light. The photocatalytic rate of Al/Zr-UiO-66-(OH)2 (K = 0.0148 min-1) was 74 times higher than that of UiO-66 (K = 0.0002 min-1). Trapping experiments, EPR and XPS analysis revealed that highly efficient photoreduction of Cr(VI) into Cr(III) was attributed to electrons and ·O2- radicals. These findings provide a feasible strategy for designing MOF-based photocatalysts for practical environmental remediation.

Improving water vapor adsorption performance at low humidity and enhancing thermal conductivity are beneficial for the performances of adsorption refrigeration materials. In this study, MIL-101(Cr) was integrated with graphene oxide (GO) and calcium chloride (CaCl₂) to develop high-performance composite adsorbents. The materials were characterized by XRD, Raman spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption, and thermal conductivity measurements. Adsorption and desorption tests revealed that the MIL-101(Cr)/2% GO + 20% CaCl₂ composite exhibited the best performance, achieving a dynamic adsorption capacity of 0.368 g/g and a 36% increase in thermal conductivity compared to pure MIL-101(Cr). Meanwhile, the heat and mass transfer performance of the materials and the COP and SCP of the system were analyzed by modeling the adsorbent and the system under the corresponding operating conditions, and MIL-101(Cr)/2% GO + 20% CaCl₂ showed the best performance among all the samples of the present study in all these models. Furthermore, the composite demonstrated excellent stability after 50 adsorption-desorption cycles, retaining a desorption efficiency above 93%. The synergistic effects of GO and CaCl₂ significantly improved both water vapor adsorption and thermal conductivity, making this composite a promising candidate for energy-efficient adsorption refrigeration systems.

A new Ag/Cu metal-organic nanozyme with MOF-like features was developed. • Dual ligands and Ag/Cu co-incorporation enable dual enzyme-mimicking activities. • “Kill two birds with one stone”: one nanozyme discriminates Cr(III) and Cr(VI). • Orthogonal channels allow direct Cr(III)/Cr(VI) quantification without subtraction. • Smartphone-assisted analysis enables chromium speciation in river water. Chromium predominantly exists as Cr(III) and Cr(VI) in aquatic environments, which differ markedly in physicochemical properties and toxicity. Rapid and direct discrimination of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) remains challenging because conventional chromium speciation methods often require redox pretreatment, multiple recognition elements, or indirect calculation. Herein, a new Ag/Cu-containing metal-organic nanozyme with MOF-like structural characteristics (Ag-BC@Cu) was developed. Ag-BC@Cu exhibited laccase-like and peroxidase-like activities and was used to construct an orthogonal colorimetric sensor for discrimination of Cr(III) and Cr(VI). Cr(III) selectively inhibited the laccase-like pathway, whereas Cr(VI) enhanced the peroxidase-like pathway, producing independent colorimetric responses at 510 and 652 nm, respectively. Generally, both chromium species were directly discriminated and quantified using a single nanozyme without redox pretreatment, multiple probes, or subtraction-based calculations. The detection limits of the orthogonal colorimetric sensor were 0.05 mg·L -1 for Cr(III) and 0.0047 mg·L -1 for Cr(VI). Smartphone-assisted analysis further enabled portable visual detection of chromium speciation. The colorimetric sensor exhibited good selectivity and was successfully applied to river-water samples, with results consistent with LC-ICP-MS. This work provides a simple “kill two birds with one stone” strategy for chromium speciation, with potential for portable water-quality monitoring. A dual enzyme-mimicking Ag-BC@Cu nanozyme enabled the orthogonal colorimetric detection of Cr(III) and Cr(VI). Cr(III) selectively inhibited the laccase-like activity, whereas Cr(VI) enhanced the peroxidase-like activity, enabling successful application to river-water samples. Cr (VI) contamination has posed severe challenges to water quality, food safety, and land resources. Microbial reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) has drawn considerable attention due to its low cost and environmental friendliness. However, recent reports have shown that Cr(VI) generates highly migratable organo-Cr(III) rather than stable inorganic chromium minerals during the biological reduction process. In this work, it was reported for the first time that spinel structure CuCr 2 O 4 was formed by Bacillus cereus in Cr biomineralization process. Different from known biomineralization models (biologically controlled mineralization and biologically induced mineralization), the chromium-copper minerals here appeared as specialized minerals with extracellular distribution. In view of this, a possible mechanism of biologically secretory mineralization was proposed. In addition, Bacillus cereus demonstrated a high conversion ability in the treatment of electroplating wastewater. The Cr(VI) removal percentage reached 99.7%, which satisfied the Chinese emission standard of pollutants for electroplating (GB 21,900–2008), indicating its application potential. Altogether, our work elucidated a bacterial chromium spinel mineralization pathway and evaluated the potential of this system for application in actual wastewater, opening a new avenue in the field of chromium pollution treatment and control.

Although silver phosphate (Ag 3 PO 4 ) exhibits high quantum efficiency and intriguing photocatalytic ability, its poor light stability limits its wide application. Herein, structurally stable and porous Ag/Ag 3 PO 4 /reduced graphene oxide microspheres are fabricated with electrostatic spraying, freezing, lyophilizing and crosslinking and used for the first time to remove toxic Cr(VI) ions with high efficiency and durability. Polydopamine serves as both moderate reductant and effective linker for Ag/Ag 3 PO 4 components to distribute well on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) sheets with controlled Ag/Ag 3 PO 4 ratios, endowing the porous microspheres with fast transfer of electrons and enhanced structural stability. Both the heterogeneous junctions of Ag/Ag 3 PO 4 and the conductive rGO sheets accelerate the electron transfer from Ag 3 PO 4 to Ag and rGO, decrease the recombination of electrons and holes and enhance the light stability of Ag 3 PO 4 . In addition, both the photogenerated electrons of Ag 3 PO 4 and the π electrons on rGO sheets reduce Cr(VI). The resulting porous microspheres deliver an excellent visible light photocatalytic efficiency of 0.62 mg min −1 g −1 (quantum yield of 2.37%) for reduction of Cr(VI) under the light intensity of 800 mW cm −2 , and a high removal efficiency of more than 90% of Cr(VI) over 30 h under a continuous photocatalytic removal system. These outstanding performances make the structurally stable and porous microspheres promising for continuous removal of Cr(VI) ions.

Hollow carbon spheres (HCSs) with flexible morphology configuration and pore structure have always been expected owing to their promising broad applications. In this work, chemical reaction kinetics guided strategy was proposed to tailor the size and pore structure of HCSs based on the modified stöber method. By varying the reaction temperature and the moment of adding carbon precursors to the solution of tetrapropyl orthosilicate (TPOS), the particle size, cavity diameter, shell thickness and pore size could be tuned conveniently. By altering the reaction temperature from 6 to 45 °C or varying the time-lag of adding carbon precursors from 0 to 180 min, the size, shell thickness and pore size of HCSs could be successfully tailored in the range of 199–697 nm, 10–104 nm and 4.35–18.87 nm, respectively. Moreover, the resulting HCSs not only exhibited excellent adsorption for Vitamin B 12 (VB 12 ), methylene blue (MB) and Cr(Ⅵ), but also featured with selective adsorption for different-sized adsorbates. This demonstrates that the chemical reaction kinetics guided pore structure tuning strategy could be an effective way to develop adsorbents with specific pore structure.
