The development of excellent photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution is of great significance to solving the global energy crisis. In this work, a novel 3D hierarchical CdS/NiAl-LDH photocatalyst was fabricated by a facile electrostatic assembly strategy, which was composed of 1D CdS nanorods and 3D flower-like NiAl-LDH microspheres . Under the visible irradiation, the CNA-20 hierarchical photocatalyst presents the optimum hydrogen evolution rate achieved to 3.24 mmol g −1 h −1 , which is improved 6.23-fold in comparison with the pure CdS. Through the analysis of energy band structures and first-principles calculation, the type-Ⅱ charge transfer mechanism was proposed. Driven by the built-in electric field, as well as the effect of intimate interface contact of CdS and NiAl-LDH, the photogenerated charge could be achieved rapidly separate and migrate, which effectively promotes the H 2 evolution. This well-designed synergistic 1D/3D interface interaction and provides an economic approach to rationally developing metal-free photocatalysts for hydrogen production .

To produce high energy density , clean hydrogen fuel by photocatalytic water splitting has become one of the important strategies for solving the shortage of fossil fuels in the future, so it is of great significance to improve photocatalytic performance. MXene with high conductivity and layered nanostructure is an excellent charge transport layer material, which can effectively enhance the photocatalytic performance of composites. Here, a novel 2D CdS/2D Nb 2 CT X composite was successfully prepared by a combination of electrostatic self-assembly and solvothermal reaction. The addition of Nb 2 CT X greatly hinders the agglomeration of CdS nanosheets , and the optimized CdS/Nb 2 CT X -40 composite presents a high photocatalytic H 2 evolution rate of 5040 μmol/g/h, which is 4.3 times higher than that of pristine CdS nanosheets. In particular, the formation of Schottky heterojunction leads to a significant redistribution of charges on the CdS/Nb 2 CT X composite, which can accelerate the photo-generated charge separation and transfer of CdS nanosheets, allowing more photo-generated electrons to drive the water splitting reaction. Moreover, the photoelectrochemical measurements, electron spin resonance (ESR) detection and the first-principles calculations confirm the effective charge transfer and more active free radicals of the CdS/Nb 2 CTx composite.

Multi-level memory can greatly improve information density, so it has been widely studied. In this study, a carbazole-based donor–acceptor polymer poly[2,7-9-(heptadecan-9-yl)-9 H -carbazole- alt -7 H -benzimidazo[2,1- a ]benz[ de ]isoquinolin-7-one] (PCz-BB) is synthesized, which exhibits flash-type ternary memory behavior. Further, CdS nanoparticles (NPs) are embedded into the prepared polymer to enhance the storage performance. The current–voltage ( I – V ) characteristics of memory devices based on PCz-BB:CdS composites and the effect of the embedding ratio of CdS NPs on the memory devices are studied. It is verified that the ON2/ON1/OFF current ratios of the devices at low CdS embedding concentrations are improved, and the threshold voltages are also reduced. The memory device based on the optimal embedding concentration (3 wt% CdS) exhibits a high ON2/ON1/OFF current ratio of 18631:72:1, a low threshold voltage of −0.40/−1.20 V, and excellent stability. The mechanism of resistive switching is explained by the theory of charge traps and conductive filaments. This work provides a new avenue for high-performance multi-level organic electrical storage materials.

Photocatalytic cleavage of lignin C O bonds is a promising way to depolymerize lignin into aromatic value-added chemicals. However, the dispersibility of lignin in solvents and photocatalytic efficiency still face great challenges. Here, a micelle aqueous medium (CTAB-15) composed of hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide and water was successfully prepared. 2-phenoxy-1-phenylethanol (lignin model compounds, PPol) and dioxanesolv poplar lignin have a good dispersion in CTAB-15. Compared to the previous reports, the highest photocatalytic efficiency can be obtained under optimal conditions by using the photocatalyst CdS. The main products formed by photocatalytic cleavage of lignin C O bonds are phenols and ketones. Mechanism studies show that CTAB-15 can provide sufficient hydrogen by photo-driven dissociation of water for photocatalytic cleavage of lignin C O bonds, which is critical to rapidly improving photocatalytic efficiency. The hydrogen, which is used to form acetophenone, comes from H 2 O and PPol. However, the hydrogen needed to form phenol comes only from PPol itself. In addition, the photocatalytic reaction follows a photogenerated electron-hole coupled redox process. This work develops a new direction for promoting the high-value utilization of lignin.

Graphical Single Z-scheme Cu 7 S 4 /CdS Janus nanoparticle impact electrochemistry is performed, revealing that optimizing the Cu 7 S 4 /CdS ratio can decrease the accumulation of holes on valence band of CdS for inhibiting photo-corrosion and promote the accumulation of electrons on the conduction band of Cu 7 S 4 for boosting the electron reducibility. Direct Z-scheme Cu 7 S 4 /CdS Janus photocatalysts are successfully prepared by cation exchange method. Extensive studies containing single-nanoparticle impact electrochemistry are performed and reveal that optimizing the Cu 7 S 4 /CdS ratio can decrease the accumulation of holes on valence band of CdS for inhibiting photo-corrosion and promote the accumulation of electrons on the conduction band of Cu 7 S 4 for boosting the electron reducibility. With the optimized heterostructures, hydrogen evolution is remarkable promoted up to 21.62 mmol/g/h and quantum efficiency is up to 14.37% using polylactic acid plastic waste as feedstock.

Cocatalyst can greatly facilitate the charge separation efficiency and decrease the activation barrier of a specific reaction, thus contributing the improved photocatalytic performance. Herein, PdS/CdS/MoS 2 was synthesized via a facile microwave-assisted approach. Owing to the coexistence of PdS and MoS 2 , respectively serving as oxidation and reduction cocatalyst, PdS/CdS/MoS 2 displayed enhanced photocatalytic performance in both hydrogen production (6610 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 ) and benzylamine oxidation (87% conversion) in comparison with the individual and binary composite counterparts. The improved photocatalytic activity was mainly attributed to the high charge separation efficiency and lowed activation barrier. Furthermore, the introduction of PdS can timely extract photogenerated holes from CdS, which effectively inhibits the photo-corrosion of CdS, endowing it with high stability. This work paves the way for developing efficient chalcogenide photocatalysts.

The fabrication of S-scheme heterojunctions has received considerable attention as an effective approach to promote the separation and migration of photoexcited electron/hole pairs and retain strong redox abilities. Herein, an imine-based porous covalent organic framework (COF-LZU1) is integrated with controllably fabricated CdS hollow cubes, resulting in the formation of an S-scheme heterojunction. When the COF content reaches 1.5 wt%, the COF/CdS heterostructure (1.5%COF/CdS) achieves the highest hydrogen generation rate of 8670 μmol·h –1 ·g –1 , which is approximately 2.1 times higher than that of pure CdS. The apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 1.5%COF/CdS is approximately 8.9% at 420 nm. Further systematic analysis shows that the intimate contact interface and suitable energy band structures between CdS and COF can induce the formation of an internal electric field at the heterojunction interface, which can effectively drive the spatial separation of photoexcited charge carriers and simultaneously maintain a strong redox ability, thus enhancing the photocatalytic H 2 evolution performance.

A highly selective fluorescence sensor based on boron and nitrogen co-doped carbon quantum dots (BN-CDs) was firstly constructed for the determination of 1,1-diamino-2,2-dinitroethylene (FOX-7). The BN-CDs fluorescent probe was prepared by a simple, green, and low-cost one-pot hydrothermal carbonization method. The BN-CDs with good dispersion had strong fluorescence property, and the particle size was about 3 nm. The Fourier transform infrared spectrum and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed that B and N elements were successfully co-doped into CDs. Under the optimal experiment condition, BN-CDs fluorescent probe had a good linear relationship with the concentrations of FOX-7 in the range of 0–80 μM, and the limit of detection was 0.41 μM. The fluorescence of BN-CDs decreased with the increase of FOX-7 concentration, which was ascribed to inner filter effect . The fluorescent sensor has high sensitivity and good selectivity , which can be successfully applied in actual water samples with satisfactory recovery.

To solve the recovery problem of nanosized powder form of photocatalysts, our work was devoted to develop a macroscale membrane-shaped photocatalyst with outstanding efficiency as well as high stability. Specifically, zinc oxide (ZnO) and cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanoparticles were successfully loaded onto the polyurethane (PU) matrix through blending and in-situ growth way, respectively. The introduction of ZnO can effectively improve the membrane hydrophilicity and endow it with some photo-catalysis capability without disturbing membrane structural integrity. After the construction of CdS/ZnO heterojunction , the photocatalytic activity obtained further enhanced. Compared with ZnO/PU (ZP) and CdS/PU (CP), CdS/ZnO/PU composite membrane (CZP) displayed the highest photocatalytic performance. The efficiency of CZP in the degradation of potassium ethyl xanthate (PEX) reached up to 97.06%, which is 7.21 and 5.42 times higher than the ZP and CP, respectively. Furthermore, CZP also exhibited satisfactory performance for removing multifarious refractory organic pollutants including potassium butyl xanthate, potassium amyl xanthate, Rhodamine B, methylene blue , crystal violet, tetracycline , and levofloxacin. Finally, the possible photocatalytic reaction mechanism of representative PEX contaminant over CZP membrane surface was discussed in detail. Overall, this novel composite porous membrane exhibited outstanding application potential in wastewater remediation.

This study reports the synthesis of CdS/WS2 composites via a green and ultra-low-cost hydrothermal method. By controlling the relative mass ratio between WS2 and CdS, an n–n type CdS/WS2 heterostructure, with excellent NH3 gas-sensitive properties, was developed and investigated at room temperature. Compared with pristine WS2 and CdS, the CdS/WS2-40%wt composite exhibited excellent selectivity of more than 4 orders of magnitude for sensing NH3, a very short recovery time of 3 s, and ultrahigh selectivity at room temperature. The large specific surface area of the CdS/WS2 composite increased the active sites for the gas-sensitive reaction. Additionally, the 2D morphology of CdS/WS2 and the heterojunction formed between WS2 and CdS contributed to the improved performance. Anti-humidity interference tests showed that the CdS/WS2 sample remained stable under real-time monitoring of NH3 at different ambient humidity values. This study paves the way for designing high-performance gas sensors operating at room temperature.

The urothermal method is a useful and unique method for preparation and design of three-dimensional (3D) nanoarchitectures. Using thiourea as the sulfur source and cadmium acetate as the cadmium source, hexagonal cone morphology CdS nanomaterial was prepared by urothermal reaction. During the reaction process, the evolution of the structure and morphology of the intermediate product is tracked to study its formation mechanism, and it contains two processes. One is the transformation from cubic CdS to hexagonal CdS, and the other is the growth and development of hexagonal CdS. In addition, studies on water splitting under visible light ( λ ≥ 420 nm) show that CdS with a hexagonal single-cone morphology has a better photolysis property (10.5 mmol h −1 g −1 ) than the CdS with morphology of particles, rods, and flowers reported in the literature, which is mainly due to the exposure of {0001} active crystal plane.

Perovskite oxides are considered promising efficient and cost-effective water splitting electrocatalysts under alkaline conditions because of their excellent hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity. However, due to their poor electron transfer and lack of exposed active sites, their HER activity is still much lower than that of precious metal catalysts. Besides, to date, few studies have been reported on the HER in complex water systems. In this study, a new composite electrocatalyst, SrCo0.7Fe0.3O3−δ@CdS, with a core–shell structure (denoted as SCF@CdS) was successfully prepared using an in situ coprecipitation method, which exhibited efficient HER activity in an alkaline environment and oilfield wastewater. The better electrocatalytic performance of SCF@CdS than pure SCF can be attributed to the larger specific surface area and more exposed active sites in this core–shell structure, and the lone pair electrons from S in CdS can also form coordination bonds with the vacant orbital of Co in the perovskite by sharing electron pairs, thus increasing the concentration of oxygen vacancies. This study provides a strategy to improve the HER performance of perovskite catalysts in complex water systems via the construction of a core–shell structure.
