Engineering Cu2O@BN photocatalytic heterojunction for synchronous kinetic enhancement and reaction pathway regulation in peroxymonosulfate activation

Yu Deng,Jie Liu,Xiaohui Wu,Tao Zhou,Mingjie Huang

The robust redox cycle of the catalytic center is essential for enhancing sustainable water purification in Fenton-like catalysis. However, the unequal of electron donation and acceptance, especially slow reductive half-reactions, often limit the process. Herein, we developed a photocatalytic heterojunction by integrating cuprous oxide (Cu 2 O) with hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN). The h-BN component acts as an electron sink, promoting electron-hole pair separation and efficient Cu + regeneration. This design enhances peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation for bisphenol A (BPA) degradation, achieving rate constants 3.79 and 12.22 times higher than Cu 2 O/PMS/Light and Cu 2 O/PMS systems, respectively. Moreover, the formation of the heterojunction optimizes the electronic structure of Cu 2 O by upshifting the d-band center. This results in stronger PMS adsorption compared to pristine Cu 2 O. Enhanced surface binding weakens the O-O bond in PMS, enabling a shift from a nonradical to a mixed radical-nonradical degradation pathway for BPA. This strategy offers an effective approach of heterostructures to modulating both the kinetics and pathways of Fenton-like catalysis for environmental remediation.

Ag-decorated Cu2O porous hollow catalyst for promoting CO2 electroreduction to C2H4 via enrichment of CO

Jianhao Li,Zhicheng Hu,Shuhuan Han,Dapeng Cao,Xiaofei Zeng,Jianfeng Chen

Electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) to multi-carbon product, especially for ethylene (C 2 H 4 ), provides a favorable pathway for carbon neutrality and renewable energy storage. However, the second-order C-C coupling reactions in CO 2 RR need always the high activation/driven energy in dynamics originating from the trace C 1 intermediate product. Herein, we synthesized the Ag-decorated Cu 2 O porous hollow core-shell catalyst named Ag@Cu 2 O where Ag nanoparticles uniformly distributed on inner the surface of the hollow Cu 2 O (H-Cu 2 O) via the sacrificial template method. Benefiting from the synergistic hollow structure and electron transfer from Cu and Ag to O, Ag@Cu 2 O catalyst delivers the excellent C 2 H 4 Faradaic Efficiency (FE) of 55 % ± 2 % at −1.0 V (vs. RHE), which is superior to the most reported catalysts. More importantly, in situ infrared spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal the introduction of Ag can decrease the activation energy required for *CO and C-C coupling.

A highly sensitive non-enzymatic glucose electrode based on truncated octahedral CuO-modified Cu2O@Cu composite

Xin Ban,Jiamu Li,Wenwen Sun,Aijia Sun,Huayi Li,Zhengchun Yang,Peng Pan,Jie He,Rui Zhang,Yang Zhao

A highly sensitive non-enzymatic glucose electrode based on truncated octahedral CuO-modified Cu 2 O@Cu composite was fabricated by a simple hydrothermal method combined with a two-step liquid-phase reduction process. Research on utilizing nanostructures to increase the contact opportunities between electroactive materials and target analytes, thereby enhancing electrocatalytic activity, is currently insufficient. In this study, we employed a reduction method to create a core–shell structure with copper shells encapsulating internal nanomaterials. This structure was designed to provide more active sites for glucose molecules, thereby enhancing the electrocatalytic response current of glucose. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to characterize the morphology and components of the products obtained from each step, while the CuO/Cu 2 O@Cu ternary composites were specifically analyzed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). For glucose detection, CuO/Cu 2 O@Cu composite was modified onto a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) as a working electrode for electrochemical performance testing. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) test results indicate that the CuO/Cu 2 O@Cu-GCE electrode exhibits a sensitivity of 771 μA cm −2 mM −1 within the glucose concentration range of 0 to 10 mM, with a detection limit of 3.39 μM. Chronoamperometry (CA) results demonstrate that the electrode achieves a sensitivity of 1067 μA cm −2 mM −1 in the glucose concentration range of 0 to 1 mM, with a detection limit of 0.56 μM. Exhibiting a broad linear response range, high sensitivity, minimal detection limit, and robust selectivity against common interferents, the electrode maintained 99 % stability over four days and retained more than 85 % of its current response for two weeks, also showing notable sensitivity in artificial sweat samples. Owing to its simple fabrication, cost-effectiveness, and outstanding electrochemical properties, the CuO/Cu 2 O@Cu composite offers significant potential for application in non-enzymatic glucose sensing.

A cubic Cu2O@Ag bioprobe for label-free SERS classification of hepatic fibrosis and hepatocellular carcinoma

Yujiao Xie,Xue Li,Lei Xu,Chenguang Zhang,Yong Ren,Xiaofeng Shi,Liyun Fu,Jing Wang,Xiawei Xu,Yue Liu,Yue Hu,Zhouxu Zhang,Jiahao Zhang,Ting Yao,Wenzhi Ren,Tianxiang Chen,Xiaoyu Qian,Xiaotian Wang,Jie Lin,Aiguo Wu

Early diagnosis and treatment of liver fibrosis can effectively prevent chronic liver disease from developing into hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Conventional techniques to detect liver fibrosis are complex and expensive. The development of non-invasive and sensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) can significantly reduce the time and cost, which is important for improving the efficiency of diagnosis and detection of liver disease. In this study, we developed a cubic core–shell Cu2O@Ag SERS bioprobe for label-free identification of HCC and hepatic fibrosis. The constructed composite substrate has shown impressive SERS sensitivity and good stability. Trace molecules (alizarin red and rhodamine 6G) with concentrations as low as 10−10 mol L−1 could be detected. Cubic Cu2O@Ag also exhibited good SERS stability, since the smallest relative standard deviation (RSD) of Cu2O@Ag-MB (methylene blue) was only 8.80%. Then, the spectral analysis of these three molecules (AR, MB, and R6G) was carried out by applying a machine learning-assisted LDA model, and the classification accuracy reached 100%. Subsequently, four different types of hepatocytes were identified and classified by using the established model and label-free SERS detection with a desirable accuracy of 91.38%. This innovative technology will further facilitate the early diagnosis of HCC and liver disease and assist in the rationalization of clinical treatment.

Yueyun Huang,Jiahua You,Yingru Ding,Yun Xie,Ting Wang,Fanglong Zhu,Weiping Gong,Zhenting Zhao

Non-enzymatic glucose detection is an effective strategy to control the blood glucose level of diabetic patients. A novel hierarchical core–shell structure of nickel hydroxide shell coated copper hydroxide core based on copper foam (Ni(OH)2@Cu(OH)2-CF) was fabricated and derived from NiO@Cu2O-CF for glucose sensing. Cyclic voltammetry and amperometry experiments have demonstrated the efficient electrochemical catalysis of glucose under alkaline conditions. The measurement displays that the fabricated sensor exhibits a detection scale of 0.005–4.5 mM with a detection sensitivity of 4.67 µA/µM/cm2. It has remarkable response/recovery times in respect of 750 μM glucose (1.0 s/3.5 s). Moreover, the NiO@Cu2O-CF shows significant selectivity, reliable reproducibility and long-term stability for glucose determination, suggesting it is a suitable candidate for further applications.

Light-assisted Schottky barrier enhancement for selective detection of L-cysteine using Ni/Cu2O/Ag nanocubes

Xiangyang Chen,Zhensen Liang,Aodi Hu,Minggang Zhao

L-Cysteine (L-Cys), a sulfur-containing amino acid, plays a crucial role in various biological processes. Rapid and accurate detection of L-Cys in the human body is significant for clinical diagnosis and drug analysis. However, classic electrochemical sensing mechanisms are usually based on redox reactions, and substances with similar redox properties in the serum can easily interfere with the detection process. In this study, we present a novel approach for the detection of L-Cys using Schottky barriers of Ni/Cu2O/Ag nanocubes. The electrode exhibits excellent selectivity towards L-Cys due to the specific interaction between Cu2O and L-Cys through the formation of Cu–S bonds. The Schottky barrier at the Cu2O/Ag interface, formed due to the difference in work functions, impedes electron transfer and can be modulated by the adsorption of charged L-Cys molecules. The introduction of light irradiation enhances the barrier modulation capability, resulting in improved sensitivity. Experimental results demonstrate that the Ni/Cu2O/Ag electrode exhibits a linear response to L-Cys concentration within 0–2400 nM at pH 3.0 and pH 7.0, with a low detection limit of 11.86 nM. The electrode shows excellent performance in real sample analysis, exhibiting high recovery rates and low relative standard deviations. The light-assisted barrier enhancement mechanism provides a new avenue for the development of highly selective and sensitive electrochemical sensors.

Electrodeposition of p-type Cu2O on n-type TiO2 nanosheet arrays for enhanced photoelectrochemical water splitting

Lin Wang,Hai Yu,YaXin Wang,Miao Chun,QianQian Lei,XinPing Yao,XiaoChen Yao,Xin Wei,JianGuo Lv,Yan Xue,JingWen Zhang,SiWen Zhou,DanDan Qu

This study synthesized p-type Cu 2 O using an electrodeposition method and firmly attached it to TiO 2 nanosheets based on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrates, forming a dense film that serves directly as a photoanode for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. Characterization techniques such as XRD, SEM, XPS, and UV–Vis confirmed the successful deposition of Cu 2 O on the TiO 2 nanosheets, forming a p-n heterojunction structure. The incorporation of Cu 2 O effectively broadened the light absorption range of TiO 2 , with a cut-off wavelength red-shifting to 537 nm, enabling it to absorb more visible light. Photoelectrochemical tests showed that under illuminated unbiased conditions, the photocurrent density of Cu 2 O-TiO 2 reached 0.3 mA/cm 2 , which is 7.5 times that of TiO 2 . After applying a small bias (0.5 V), the photocurrent density further increased to 2.1 mA/cm 2 , 5.2 times that under unbiased conditions, indicating that the introduction of electricity effectively accelerated the separation efficiency of photo-generated carriers. The Cu₂O-TiO₂ heterojunction exhibited significantly higher photocurrent density (measured by LSV) and charge transfer efficiency (evaluated by EIS) than pure TiO₂. This research provides new insights for PEC water splitting technology and serves as a reference for designing high-performance photocatalysts.

High-efficiency Cu2O/CuFe-LDH nanocomposite for Fenton degradation of organic pollutants: Boosted dual redox cycles

Yanrui Su,Xiaoyu Li,Zimu Gao,Jiajia He,Zizhen Liu,Linjun Duan,Tian Sun,Jiaoge Wu,Dan Liang,Chaojun Wei,Faying Fan,Wa Gao

The incorporation of dual redox sites within catalytic materials for H 2 O 2 activation represents a promising approach to enhance the efficiency of pollutant decomposition. In this study, Cu 2 O modified CuFe-LDH nanocomposite (Cu 2 O/CuFe-LDH) was successfully synthesized via in situ topotactic transformation of CuFe-LDH. The catalytic degradation performance of the Cu 2 O/CuFe-LDH nanocomposite was investigated utilizing tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) as a typical antibiotic contaminant. It demonstrated exceptional catalytic activity, achieving a TCH elimination rate of 93.0 % in 60 min. A rate constant value of 0.0426 min −1 was calculated for the pseudo-first-order kinetic model, which was 1.6 times and 5.0 times higher than those of CuFe-LDH and Cu 2 O, respectively. Moreover, the Cu 2 O/CuFe-LDH nanocomposite demonstrated remarkable cycling stability (85 % degradation rate after 5 recycling cycles), a wide pH range (3−11), resistance to background ion interference, and lower toxicity of the products of degradation. Based on radical scavenger tests and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, it was verified that TCH degradation was mediated by 1 O 2 , •OH and •O 2 - , with 1 O 2 playing an essential role. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and density functional theory (DFT) investigations indicate that the remarkable catalytic efficacy of Cu 2 O/CuFe-LDH is predominantly due to the synergistic interactions between Cu 2 O and CuFe-LDH, with Cu 2 O promoting the accelerated dual Cu 2+ /Cu + and Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ cycling. Thus, the Cu 2 O/CuFe-LDH nanocomposite exhibits exceptional efficiency, environmental friendliness and recyclability, rendering it an ideal candidate for practical wastewater treatment applications.

Theory-Guided Modification of Ionic Liquid on Cu2O Promotes Asymmetric C–C Coupling for CO2 Conversion

Shilun Wang,Wei Peng,Heliang Ma,Xingdi Pan,Yao Shen,Jingkai Zhao,Jiexu Ye,Qiaoli Wang,Pengfei Xie,Shihan Zhang,Xiang Gao

The electrocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2RR) by copper oxide-based materials is conducive to the formation of high value-added products, but their activities and selectivities remain unsatisfactory. Organic ligand modification is a promising strategy to achieve a high CO2RR activity. Here, the modification of Cu2O with 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (Bmim-Cu2O) enhanced the adsorption of reaction intermediates and improved the stability of the catalyst in the CO2RR, which displays a high Faradaic efficiency of ≈85% to C2+ products with a current density as large as ≈352.5 mA cm–2. In situ characterization reveals a stronger *CO signal with bridge configuration and a stronger *OCCHO signal over Bmim-Cu2O than unmodified Cu2O and can improve the stability during electrochemical CO2 reduction. Density functional theory calculations show that local molecular modulation can effectively regulate the electronic structure of Cu2O and enhance the adsorption of *CO and *CHO intermediates through the stabilization of a noncovalent interaction, which can greatly promote the asymmetric *CO–*CHO coupling in the electrochemical reaction process.

One step in-situ grown Cu2O NPs on CF for efficient electrochemical nitrate reduction to ammonia

Yanjun Wang,Yuancai Lv,Yifan Liu,Minghua Liu

Rapid industrial growth and widespread fertilizer application have led to nitrate contamination in water, threatening ecosystems and human health. There is growing interest in developing electrocatalysts to convert nitrates into ammonia, enabling wastewater recycling and transforming harmful substances into valuable ammonia. In this study, we presented an eco-friendly, cost-effective electrocatalyst suitable for large-scale industrial production. It was designed specifically for the electrochemical reduction of NO 3 – to NH 3 (NO 3 − RR). Cu 2 O nanoparticles were synthesized on Cu foam through a simple one-step in situ growth approach. The conversion of Cu + , serving as the active site during NO 3 − RR, into nanoscale Cu had been investigated. Cu + sites initiated the conversion of nitrate to nitrite and subsequently facilitated the reduction of nitrite to ammonia while being transformed into nano-grained Cu. The newly generated Cu, with a larger specific surface area and lower charge transfer resistance, improved Faradaic efficiency (FE) for NH 3 in the NO 3 − RR process. As a result, an impressive nitrate removal rate of 100 % and a relatively high ammonia yield rate of 1514.67 µg h −1 cm −2 , along with a low residue of nitrite-N (0.21 ppm) can be achieved in solutions containing 100 ppm of nitrate-N.

Synthesis and characterization of Cu-Cu2O/reduced graphene oxide for enhanced iodide adsorption through multiple pathways

Ning Pan,Minjie Chen,Junjie Tan,Lei Liao,Rong Nie,Jianpeng Xu,Run Lei,Hao Zou,Hao Lei,Zhijie Chen,Xiaoqin Nie

Fabricating efficient copper-based adsorbents for radioactive iodine removal is crucial for environmental protection and waste volume reduction, particularly in the treatment of radioactive waste from hospitals. In this study, a composite of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) supported by Cu-Cu 2 O nanocrystals (Cu-Cu 2 O/RGO-3) was synthesized via a one-step method and evaluated for its effectiveness in iodide removal from water. The composite was comprehensively characterized using XRD, SEM, FT-IR, and XPS analyses. The effects of copper content, pH, contact time, iodide concentration, temperature, and coexisting anions on iodide uptake were systematically investigated. In the Cu-Cu 2 O/RGO-3 composite, copper primarily existed as metallic Cu, along with a small amount of Cu 2 O. Cu-Cu 2 O/RGO-3 exhibited a significantly higher I - adsorption capacity compared to Cu powder, effectively reducing I - concentrations from 8.6 to 0.029 mg/L within just 3 min, demonstrating a rapid uptake rate for trace I - . Furthermore, the maximum adsorption capacity reached 152.1 mg/g at pH 7.0, surpassing that of many reported copper-based adsorbents. The composite showed selectivity in the presence of competing ions like Cl - , NO 3 - , and SO 4 2- , but HCO 3 - at higher concentrations inhibited I - adsorption. Post-adsorption analysis revealed that iodine was present solely as CuI. XPS analysis indicated that residual carboxyl groups in RGO facilitated the oxidation of Cu and promoted redox reactions between Cu(OH) 2 and Cu, providing multiple pathways for generating additional Cu + ions, thereby enhancing I - adsorption. This study offers a practical approach for modifying carbon-based materials with copper compounds, emphasizing the potential of copper-based materials for effective iodide purification in wastewater treatment.

Controllable synthesis of janus Cu2O/ZnO nanoarchitectures for photothermal enhanced fenton catalytic-driven dye contaminant degradation

Zhigang Hu,Tian Gao,Jinghua Li

A janus polydopamine-coated Cu 2 O/ZnO nanoarchitectures (ZnCuO@PDA) is presented and show favorable applications in environmental remediation, specifically dye degradation. The nanoarchitectures consisted of a heterostructure co-composed of the N-type semiconductor ZnO and the narrow bandgap P-type semiconductor Cu 2 O as the core. The formation of the Cu 2 O/ZnO heterojunction lowered the rate of electron-hole complexation, and the PDA provided the nanomaterials with excellent photo-thermal properties and active sites, which worked together to enhance the degradation rate for dye by photothermal enhanced Fenton catalytic effect. Rhodamine B (RhB) was served as modal dye contaminant, then the degradation experiments showed that the low concentration of ZnCuO@PDA exhibited excellent dye degradation over a wide pH range. Furthermore, ZnCuO@PDA exhibits favorable biocompatibility and recyclability, making it an environmentally sustainable and economically multiphase catalytic system. This innovation presents a novel approach for effective dye degradation.
