This research was designed to improve the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers in TiO2through the construction of a PN heterojunction. The motivation behind this was to tackle the problems of the narrow light response range and the high electron-hole recombination rate of TiO2. By simple one-step implementing electrospinning and calcination procedures, CuO/TiO2PN heterojunction nanofibers were successfully synthesized. XRD and SEM analyses confirm that the heterojunction is a nanofiber structure composed of TiO2and CuO, with the TiO2containing anatase and rutile phases. The PL reveals that the fluorescence intensity of the heterojunction is lower compared to that of pure TiO2, and this implies a remarkable enhancement in the carrier separation efficiency. Under xenon light irradiation, for the optimized sample, the degradation rate of RhB exceeds 80%. This degradation rate is 68% higher than that of pure TiO2. The improvement in photocatalytic performance can be ascribed to the efficient charge separation driven by the built-in electric field within the PN junction and the extended light absorption range. The photoelectrochemical test further verified that the photocurrent density of the heterojunction system was 52.42% higher than that of the single TiO2, providing a new strategy for designing efficient photocatalytic systems.

Formic acid, a corrosive and toxic organic compound, poses risks to health and ecosystems due to environmental residues, highlighting the need for efficient detection methods. This study synthesized pure CuO and Co-doped CuO (CCO) cocklebur-like nanostructures using a one-step hydrothermal method. Moreover, the crystal structure, morphology, and elemental composition of CCO-4 samples were also investigated. Experimental results demonstrated that the optimal sample, CCO-4, exhibited a gas sensing response value of 118.6–100 ppm formic acid at an operating temperature of 125°C, which is approximately 16.5 times higher than that of pure CuO. Additionally, CCO-4 displayed excellent comprehensive performance, including low power consumption, a detection limit as low as 100 ppb, good selectivity for formic acid, and long-term stability. Based on Lewis acid-base theory and the formation of Cu 2 + −O 2 -• metal ion complexes, the gas sensing process and sensitization mechanism of CCO-4 were systematically analyzed. These findings offer new theoretical and technical pathways for developing low-power, high-performance formic acid sensors.

Harnessing the full solar spectrum through photothermal co-catalysis represents a transformative approach for optimizing energyconversion and advancing sustainable development. Herein, a hollow spherical Cu/CuO-Fe3O4 composite was developed as a photothermal cocatalyst for efficient hydrogen evolution. The unique hollow spherical architecture significantly enhances solar light harvesting, reduces thermal dissipation, and provides an ideal confined environment for catalytic reactions. Metallic Cu serving as the primary contributor to the LSPR effect, enabling effective light harvesting and photothermal conversion. Meanwhile, CuO, as a semiconducting oxide, contributes to charge separation and transfer, working synergistically with Fe3O4. A robust heterojunction interface between Cu, CuO, and Fe3O4 ensures efficient separation and migration of photogenerated charge carriers. This synergy, combining the LSPR effect of Cu, the photothermal properties of Fe3O4, and the catalytic functionality of CuO, results in significantly enhanced hydrogen evolution activity. Operated under an oxygen-mediated mechanism, the catalyst achieved an impressive hydrogen evolution rate of 13,371.36 μmol·gcatalyst-1·h-1 at a partial oxygen pressure of 1.0 atm. These findings underscore the potential of hollow spherical Cu/CuO-Fe3O4 composites as advanced photothermal co-catalysis as a viable pathway for next-generation clean energy applications.

Electrochemical ammonia synthesis via nitrate reduction reaction (NO 3 RR) offers a sustainable solution for mitigating nitrate pollution while recovering valuable nitrogen resources. Conventional flow-by/batch systems suffer from slow kinetics and low current efficiency due to a thick boundary layer at the electrode surface, which impairs NO 3 RR activity and selectivity. This study introduces a novel flow-through configuration employing a micron-porous CuO-Co 3 O 4 composite membrane electrode for enhanced NO 3 RR. Computational fluid dynamics simulations revealed a significantly thinner boundary layer (∼10 μm) in the flow-through mode compared to flow-by (>120 μm). Consequently, the flow-through mode exhibited a seven-fold increase in NO 3 RR kinetics, boosting the ammonia Faradaic efficiency (FE) from 7.2 % to 79.8 %. Optimization of the Co 3 O 4 membrane electrode, addressing parameters of Cu/Co loading and pore size, further enhanced performance. This achieved high ammonia selectivity and FE (up to 95.7 % and 88.1 %, respectively) across a broad nitrate concentration range (0.02–1.0 g N L −1 ). Mechanistic investigations, integrating scavenger-quenching experiments, electrochemical analyses, and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy demonstrated that ammonia synthesis primarily followed the dominance of the direct electron transfer (DET) between the flow-through cathode and nitrate/nitrite, while hydrogen species (H*) served an auxiliary function. These results underscore the effectiveness of the flow-through membrane electrode configuration in facilitating efficient electrochemical ammonia synthesis, offering valuable insights for the advancement of electrochemical technologies for pollution control and resource recovery.

This study introduces a flexible bifunctional planar micro-supercapacitor with integrated self-sensing piezoresistive capability (BPMSC-SSPC) through the development of a screen-printing ink derived from laser-induced graphene (LIG) and pseudocapacitive CuO nanoparticles. Utilizing this ink, patterned CuO/LIG electrodes are fabricated via scalable screen-printing technology, enabling the seamless integration of energy storage and pressure sensing into a single flexible platform. The resultant all-in-one device operates via a synergistic pseudocapacitive-piezoresistive mechanism, exhibiting a high areal capacitance of 6.38 mF·cm -2 , an energy density of 0.886 mWh·cm -2 , and a power density of 0.05 mW·cm -2 , alongside robust mechanical stability under deformation. Furthermore, the BPMSC-SSPC demonstrates remarkable pressure-sensing functionality, enabling precise detection of physiological signals (e.g., wrist flexion, respiration, swallowing) and facilitating advanced communication modes such as Morse code transmission. This work overcomes traditional constraints imposed by discrete energy-storage and sensing components, offering a scalable and cost-effective fabrication pathway toward multifunctional wearable systems. By bridging energy autonomy with adaptive sensing in a unified architecture, the presented platform aligns with the emerging paradigm of miniaturized, integrated, and multifunctional flexible electronics, thereby expanding the design possibilities for next-generation smart wearables and human-machine interfaces.

Electrochemical CO 2 reduction to multi-carbon fuels and chemicals is intriguing but remains a challenge. Here, we report that a combination of Sn doping and creation of oxygen vacancies (V O ) can synergistically boost CO 2 reduction to C 2 H 4 over CuO nanosheets with an onset potential of −0.7 V (versus reversible hydrogen electrode). The activity and selectivity of CuO can be easily tuned by manipulation of Sn dopant and V O contents. The Faradaic efficiency toward C 2 H 4 formation over Sn-doped CuO(V O ) approaches 48.5% ± 1.2%, which maintains stability over 24 h at a mild overpotential, in contrast to a maximum of 26.8% ± 2.2% over pristine CuO. The Sn-doped CuO(V O ) catalyst presents an approximately 2.3-fold improvement in C 2 H 4 current compared to undoped CuO at similar overpotentials. Theoretical calculations further show that doping of Vo-enriched CuO surface by Sn lowers the dimerization energy of adsorbed CO intermediate, thereby promoting C–C coupling to yield C 2 H 4 .

Catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) of biomass-derived furfural (FAL) to furfuryl alcohol is recognized as one of the most versatile techniques for biomass valorization. However, the irreversible sintering of metal sites under the high-temperature reaction or during the coke removal regeneration process poses a serious concern. Herein, we present a silicalite-1-confined ultrasmall CuO structure (CuO@silicalite-1) and then compared its catalytic efficiency against conventional surface-supported CuO structure (CuO/silicalite-1) toward CTF of FAL with alcohols. Characterization results revealed that CuO nanoparticles encapsulated within the silicalite-1 matrix are ∼1.3 nm in size in CuO@silicalite-1, exhibiting better dispersion as compared to that in the CuO/silicalite-1. The CuO@silicalite-1, as a result, exhibited nearly 100-fold higher Cu-mass-based activity than the CuO/silicalite-1 counterpart. More importantly, the activity of the CuO@silicalite-1 catalyst can be regenerated via facile calcination to remove the surface-bound carbon deposits, unlike the CuO/silicalite-1 that suffered severe deactivation after use and cannot be effectively regenerated.

Transition-metal oxide (MxOy)-based persulfate (PDS) activation processes have demonstrated enormous potential for pollutant degradation in water purification. However, the mechanistic insight of PDS activation by a MxOy catalyst concerning the mediate role of the organic substrate remains obscure. Here, we demonstrated that the in situ-formed phenoxyl radical on the CuO surface can trigger efficient persulfate activation for phenol degradation. The formation of the phenoxyl radical was an inner-sphere process, which involved the successive steps of chemisorption through surface hydroxyl group substitution and the subsequent spontaneous electron transfer reaction from adsorbed phenol to CuO. The organic substrate phenol can be oxidized by the PDS molecule and surface-bound SO4•– through the nonradical and free-radical pathways, respectively. Such a unique “half-radical” mechanism resulted in an extraordinarily high PDS utilization efficiency of 188.9%. More importantly, a general rule for phenoxyl radical formation was concluded; it can be formed in the cases of organic substrates with a Hammett constant σ+ lower than −0.02 and metal ion of a 3d subshell between half-filled and fully filled. This study clarifies the mediate role of the organic substrate for interfacial PDS activation on MxOy and also gives new insights into the rational design of a highly efficient MxOy catalyst for selective phenolic/aniline pollutant degradation in wastewater.

This investigation examines the thermocatalytic behavior of hollow Cu 2 O/CuO nanocomposites toward a molecular perovskite energetic material. The incorporation of hollow Cu 2 O/CuO nanocomposites at weight percentages of 1 %, 5 %, and 10 % consistently reduced the peak thermal decomposition temperature ( T p ) compared to pure DAP-4. Specifically, the T p values decreased by 50.70 °C, 76.98 °C, and 78.46 °C, respectively. This enhanced thermal stability was accompanied by a corresponding decrease in activation energy values, which were lower by 115.9 kJ/mol, 200.57 kJ/mol, and 209.98 kJ/mol, respectively. Base on the findings, we proposed a possible catalytic decomposition mechanism of DAP-4 mediated by hollow Cu 2 O/CuO nanocomposites.

Widespread nitrate contamination in water challenges both aquatic ecosystems and drinking water safety, and the electrocatalytic nitrate reduction to ammonia (eNRA) presents a promising sustainable way to convert pollutants to value-added products. However, most existing eNRA systems operate efficiently only under highly alkaline and concentrated conditions that are incompatible with real wastewater. Here, we report a hollow heterostructured Co3O4/CuO catalyst which permits efficient eNRA in neutral aqueous media over a wide range of environmentally relevant nitrate concentrations (1-250 mM). The catalyst achieves NH3 Faradaic efficiencies above 97% in the 10-250 mM nitrate range and maintains 86% even at 1 mM nitrate. Furthermore, the catalyst showed excellent stability over 100 hours of continuous operation. In situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis suggests that the hollow architecture creates a spatially confined microenvironment that accelerates the hydrogenation of NOx intermediates toward NH₃, and density functional theory calculations indicate the ensemble effect of Co3O4/CuO interface in reducing the free-energy changes of key nitrate reduction steps. This work highlights a structure engineering strategy in electrocatalysts for efficient nitrate remediation and wastewater treatment.

Catalytic hydrolysis of ammonia borane presents a promising pathway for hydrogen production. Herein, pyroligneous acid, a byproduct of biomass pyrolysis, was employed for the green synthesis of a NiO–Co 3 O 4 –CuO microparticle catalyst, and the catalytic performance for hydrogen evolution via ammonia borane hydrolysis was evaluated. The synergistic effects among CuO, NiO and Co 3 O 4 were found to significantly enhance catalytic activity. The porous structure of the catalyst facilitated the catalytic reaction. The optimized green-synthesized NiO–Co 3 O 4 –CuO catalyst demonstrated exceptional hydrogen production efficiency of 1153 mL⋅g −1 ⋅min −1 , validating the advantages of plant-derived extracts as both reducing and stabilizing agents in catalyst preparation. These findings provide critical insights for designing high-performance oxide catalysts for ammonia borane hydrolysis. With its cost-effectiveness and superior catalytic performance, the NiO–Co 3 O 4 –CuO catalyst emerges as a prime candidate for practical hydrogen production applications. Furthermore, this research highlights the substantial potential of environment friendly synthesis approaches in developing advanced energy conversion materials.

Abstract Selective detection of trace (weakly reducing) dimethyl sulfide (DMS) in highly humid exhaled breath using metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) sensors, with the presence of strong reducing H2S interference gas, is essential for the early diagnosis of hepatic diseases. However, it remains a big challenge in principle. Herein, a bilayer MOS sensor with a Pd–WO3 sensing film and a CuO/Al2O3 filtering overlayer was proposed. The temperature-dependent H2S catalytic oxidation experiment suggests that CuO could effectively filter H2S even under room temperature. Dispersing the CuO particles into insulative Al2O3 carrier could not only selectively remove H2S without significant consumption of DMS but also isolate the underlying Pd–WO3 sensing layer’s response signal from interference caused by that of CuO. By adding the CuO/Al2O3 1:9 filtering overlayer, the response ratio of DMS to H2S was significantly enhanced from 3.3 to 50.4, furthermore, an ultrahigh response (701.3) to 10 ppm DMS, and a low limit of detection of 10 ppb under 90% RH were achieved, which promises the future breath disease diagnosis.
