Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose/polyvinyl alcohol/clove essential oil composite hydrogel with integrated antibacterial, antifreeze, and conductive properties as a wearable sensor for human motion monitoring

Kunying Yu,Bingyou Luo,Haiyu Yang,Jingjin He,Ziqi Zhu,Peiyuan Li,Haiyi Zhong

Conductive hydrogels have emerged as promising materials for flexible wearable electronics; however, their facile fabrication remains challenging. This study presents an antifreeze, antibacterial, and conductive hydrogel constructed from biomacromolecules sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC-Na) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The hydrogel was synthesized via a simple one-pot method in an ethylene glycol/water (EG/H₂O) binary solvent system, incorporating lithium chloride (LiCl) and clove essential oil (CEO), followed by a single freeze-thaw cycle. The synergistic framework of CMC-Na and PVA endowed the hydrogel with robust mechanical flexibility and structural integrity. LiCl integration achieved high ionic conductivity (6.94Sm −1 ), while EG imparted exceptional freezing resistance, maintaining flexibility and conductivity at −50 °C. CEO provided potent antibacterial activity against common pathogens, significantly mitigating bacterial contamination risks. Owing to its high strain sensitivity, fast response time (<200 ms), and environmental resilience, the hydrogel served as an effective wearable sensor for real-time monitoring of human joint movements, subtle physiological signals. This work establishes a CMC-Na/PVA -based multifunctional hydrogel design paradigm, offering a scalable strategy for next-generation smart wearable devices.

Quantitative Analysis of Ginger Maturity and Pulsed Electric Field Thresholds: Effects on Microstructure and Juice’s Nutritional Profile

Zhong Han,Pan He,Yu-Huan Geng,Muhammad Faisal Manzoor,Xin-An Zeng,Suqlain Hassan,Muhammad Talha Afraz

This study used fresh (young) and old (mature) ginger tissues as model systems to investigate how plant maturity modulates the response to pulsed electric field (PEF), a non-thermal processing technology. Specifically, the influence of tissue maturity on dielectric behavior and its downstream effect on juice yield and bioactive compound extraction was systematically evaluated. At 2.5 kV/cm, old ginger exhibited a pronounced dielectric breakdown effect due to enhanced electrolyte content and cell wall lignification, resulting in a higher degree of cell disintegration (0.65) compared with fresh ginger (0.44). This translated into a significantly improved juice yield of 90.85% for old ginger, surpassing the 84.16% limit observed in fresh ginger. HPLC analysis revealed that the extraction efficiency of 6-gingerol and 6-shogaol increased from 1739.16 to 2233.60 µg/g and 310.31 to 339.63 µg/g, respectively, in old ginger after PEF treatment, while fresh ginger showed increases from 1257.88 to 1824.05 µg/g and 166.43 to 213.52 µg/g, respectively. Total phenolic content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC) also increased in both tissues, with OG-2.5 reaching 789.57 µg GAE/mL and 336.49 µg RE/mL, compared with 738.19 µg GAE/mL and 329.62 µg RE/mL in FG-2.5. Antioxidant capacity, as measured by ABTS•+and DPPH•inhibition, improved more markedly in OG-2.5 (37.8% and 18.7%, respectively) than in FG-2.5. Moreover, volatile compound concentrations increased by 177.9% in OG-2.5 and 137.0% in FG-2.5 compared with their respective controls, indicating differential aroma intensification and compound transformation. Structural characterization by SEM and FT-IR further corroborated enhanced cellular disruption and biochemical release in mature tissue. Collectively, these results reveal a maturity-dependent mechanism of electro-permeabilization in plant tissues, offering new insights into optimizing non-thermal processing for functional food production.

Sustained-release electrospun films incorporated with oregano essential oil: Characterization, release kinetics and active packaging application for chicken breast

Bo Li,Tianchi Tang,Mengyue Jiang,Hui Chen,Yanhong Bai

Sustained-release nanofilms incorporated with oregano essential oil (OEO) were developed by emulsion electrospinning using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and quaternary-ammonium chitosan (QAC). The SEM, FTIR and XRD results showed that OEO was successfully encapsulated in the PVA/QAC nanofiber with a diameter range of 158.0–179.6 nm. The incorporation of OEO significantly enhanced the mechanical and barrier properties of PVA/QAC nanofilm, concomitantly mitigating its hydrophilic nature. The prepared PVA/QAC-OEO nanofilms demonstrated excellent antioxidant properties and antimicrobial activities against S. aureus and E. coli (the maximum inhibition zones achieving 23.13 ± 0.72 mm). The release kinetics results showed sustained release of OEO from the PVA/QAC nanofilms, and the release kinetics of OEO adhered to the Fickian + First order dynamics model (R 2  = 0.9570–0.9997), indicating that a combination of random diffusion and polymer structural relaxation influenced the release of OEO. Furthermore, preservation research showed that the PVA/QAC-OEO nanofilms significantly inhibited the rise in pH, total volatile base nitrogen (TVB-N), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARs), and total viable count (TVC) in chicken breasts stored at 4 °C, while also maintaining their color and texture properties. Particularly, chicken breasts wrapped in PVA/QAC-OEO 3 film exhibited an extended shelf life for 4 days. Therefore, the PVA/QAC-OEO nanofilms could be a prospective packaging material for meat preservation.

Synthesis and characterization of functional Monascus yellow pigment-tannic acid complexes via Co-pigmentation

Kaize Zheng,Xueling Qin,Lingchun Meng,Yusheng Liang,Junwei Qin,Zhenqiang Wu,Zhenfeng Huang

Natural Monascus yellow pigments (MYPs) have potential in the food industry due to their safety, but their application is limited by low biological activity and stability. Novel MYPs complexes, Monascus yellow pigments-tannic acid (MYPs-TA), were synthesized by spontaneously incorporating TA through intermolecular co-pigmentation in this work. Structural analysis revealed that multiple interactions contributed to the formation of complexes, including hydrogen bonding, π-π stacking, and hydrophobic interactions. The MYPs-TA exhibited characteristic ultraviolet signals of both MYPs (380 nm) and TA (276 nm), and the crystalline structure of MYPs transitioned to an amorphous form. These phenomena confirmed the tight combination of MYPs and TA. Color tonality, physicochemical stability as well as antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of MYPs were significantly improved after interaction with TA. Besides, MYPs-TA exhibited optimal stability and functionality in high-temperature processed foods such as baked goods or pasteurized products. This study provides a novel approach for synthesizing functional MYPs complexes with superior stability.

Integrating zebrafish model and network pharmacology for screening and identification of edible herbs with therapeutic potential of anti-photoaging: A promising drug Gentiana rigescens Franch.

Ruoxin Chen,Jiahao Ren,Zhenlong Zhou,Wenjun Zhang,Jianyu Su

Gentiana rigescens Franch. extract have demonstrated various important bioactivities, however, their potential against photoaging has yet to be evaluated. This study explored the anti-photoaging effects of Gentiana rigescens Franch. root extract (GRFR) and stem (GRFS), along with their underlying mechanisms and bioactive components, using the UVB-induced zebrafish model. GRFS demonstrated superior anti-photoaging efficacy compared to GRFR. GRFS significantly alleviated UVB-induced tail fin damage, increasing the relative tail fin area from 31.23% to 80.92% (at 1mg/mL), and reducing ROS levels from 244.80% to 150.95%. It also inhibited lipid peroxidation, lowering malondialdehyde (MDA) levels from 202.87 nmol/g to 142.83 nmol/g. Furthermore, GRFS enhanced antioxidant enzyme activities, increasing superoxide dismutase (SOD) from 80.94 U/g to 104.06 U/g. Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) indicated substantial distinctions in the composition and content of major constituents between GRFR and GFRS, which may explain the differences in their anti-photoaging activities. And then network pharmacology was used to investigate possible mechanisms of GFRS, which identified five potential targets including CTNNB1, ESR1, AKT1, JUN and EGFR, as well as three key active compounds including aspartyl-phenylalanine (Asp-Phe), N-acetyl-L-phenylalanine (N-Acetyl-L-Phe), and phenylalanyl-tyrosine (Phe-Tyr). Finally, the molecular docking revealed that Phe-Tyr exhibited the strongest binding affinity for AKT1 (-8.86 kcal/mol), indicating that it may be the most potent anti-photoaging compound in GFRS. These findings suggest that G . rigescens , with its potent anti-photoaging properties, offers superior protection against UVB-induced photoaging and holds promise as a natural therapeutic agent.

Impact of an integrated piston-gap and microfluidic high-pressure homogenization system on the stability and quality of lemon emulsions

Shikang Tang,Naiwen Xing,Yidian Li,Xuejiao Wang,Chaofan Guo,Xiaosong Hu,Junjie Yi

Lemon emulsion, enriched with vitamin C, organic acids, and dietary fiber, is widely utilized in food applications due to its refreshing flavor and associated health benefits. However, traditional pasteurization (PT) techniques commonly employed to prolong shelf life often lead to nutrient degradation and sensory deterioration. This study investigates the impact of a high-pressure homogenization system integrating piston-gap and microfluidic technologies (IPM-HS) on the quality and stability of lemon emulsions. Emulsions composed of fresh lemon juice, olive oil, and Tween 80 were treated at 200, 300, and 400 MPa. The IPM-HS treatment significantly enhanced turbidity (up to 1.5-fold), reduced particle size below 500 nm, and achieved effective microbial reduction, with no viable microorganisms detected at any pressure level. In addition, EAI and ESI values increased significantly with pressure, indicating enhanced emulsifying capacity and long-term physical stability. Zeta potential measurements showed more negative values after IPM-HS treatment, suggesting improved electrostatic repulsion and greater emulsion stability. The L* value increased markedly from 62.39 to 89.81 at 400 MPa, indicating a shift in color from light yellow to milky white. Emulsions treated with IPM-HS exhibited stable nanostructures with no phase separation during 30-day storage, in contrast to untreated and thermally treated controls. Moreover, total phenolic content increased from 0.49 to 0.58 mg GAE/g ( p  < 0.05), and antioxidant activity was well preserved. Flavor analysis using electronic tongue and nose revealed minimal deviation from the control group. Overall, IPM-HS markedly improves emulsion stability, physicochemical quality, and nutritional retention while maintaining sensory attributes, underscoring its potential as a promising non-thermal processing technology for emulsion-based product development.

Pickering emulsion stabilized by soy lecithin-derived lipid nanoparticles to amplify the antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory functions of rose essential oil

Qiqi Ge,Jiaxing Zhang,Yuhui Wang,Jiayurui Liu,Huaanzi Hu,Wencai Wang,Cheng Wang

Addressing the growing consumer demand for natural ingredients, this study introduces a novel strategy to enhance the functionality of essential oils in food systems. Rose essential oil (REO), valued for its antimicrobial activities, faces limitations due to instability and poor bioavailability. We report a soy lecithin-derived lipid nanoparticles (SL-LNPs)-stabilized Pickering emulsion, employing it for REO delivery. SL-LNPs, synthesized via a facile method, exhibit optimal interfacial properties (θ ≈ 86°) enabling the formation of stable, submicron oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions. Encapsulation within the Pickering emulsion significantly improves the stability and antioxidant capacity of REO. This system demonstrates a marked increase in the antibacterial properties of REO against representative Gram-positive ( Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) and Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)) and Gram-negative ( Escherichia coli ( E. coli )) bacterial strains. In vitro experiments show that compared with REO emulsion, SL-LNPs Pickering emulsion has excellent biocompatibility and enhanced REO bioavailability. These findings establish SL-LNPs as promising and multifunctional Pickering emulsion stabilizers, facilitating next-generation delivery systems for sustainable food preservation and health-promoting functional foods.

pH-Responsive Bilayer Hydrogel with Synergistic Antibacterial/Anti-inflammatory Effect for Infected Wound Healing

Mengxin Huangfu,Yuankun Ren,Wei Yang,Yu Liu,Xiyu Li

Hydrogels are promising candidates for wound dressings owing to their good biocompatibility, high-water retention, and extracellular matrix-mimicking structure. However, conventional single-layer hydrogels are hard to cope with given the dynamic pH fluctuations (pH 6–8.9) of infected wounds, which exacerbate bacterial colonization and oxidative stress. Here, we engineered a multifunctional bilayer hydrogel (named PPTC) comprising a hydrophobic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) top layer and a polyacrylamide (PAM)-based bottom layer integrated with tannic acid (TA) and curcumin-loaded alginate microspheres (Alg@Cur). The PDMS top layer was adopted to prevent external contamination and moisture loss, while the adhesive PAM-TA-Alg@Cur (PTC) bottom layer was designed to achieve a pH-responsive therapeutic synergy. In vitro studies showed that TA exhibited a rapid release (76.66% within 12 h) to suppress bacterial proliferation and inflammation, while Alg@Cur could slowly release curcumin in a pH-dependent manner (90.32% at pH 8.5 vs 38.06% at pH 6, cumulatively), targeting alkaline microenvironments to mitigate oxidative stress. Their synergy demonstrated potent antibacterial activity (≥99.90% inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli) and reactive oxygen species scavenging ability (93.89% DPPH elimination). In a rat-infected wound model, the PPTC bilayer hydrogel synergistically accelerated infected wound healing by reducing inflammation, enhancing collagen deposition, and promoting angiogenesis. This work pioneers a pH-driven therapeutic platform for advancing smart dressings for infected wound management.

Medicinal Plant-Derived Carbon Dots Nanozymes Ameliorate Ulcerative Colitis via Anti-inflammatory, Antioxidant, and Gut Barrier-Protective Effects

Yifan Li,Qian Li,Yuanyuan Zhu,Chenye Huang,Huanyu Li,Zhichao Deng,Chenxi Xu,Wenlong Wang,Liyuan Chen,Shanli Zhang,Manli Cui,Mingzhen Zhang,Mingxin Zhang

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease characterized by oxidative stress, immune dysregulation, and compromised intestinal barrier integrity. Current therapeutic agents are frequently limited by safety concerns. To address this clinical challenge, we pioneered the development of an innovative nanotherapeutic system derived from the medicinal plant Atractylodes macrocephala via hydrothermal synthesis, which integrates antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and barrier-restorative functionalities. Comprehensive characterization demonstrated that A. macrocephala-derived carbon dots (AM-CDs) possess a uniform particle size (∼5.0 nm), abundant surface hydrophilic groups, and exhibit potent antioxidant activity by scavenging over 95% of hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and superoxide anions (•O2–). AM-CDs confer therapeutic benefits via a tripartite mechanism: potent antioxidant activity, characterized by the direct elimination of excessive intestinal reactive oxygen species (ROS), thereby disrupting the oxidative stress cascade; anti-inflammatory modulation, evidenced by the significant downregulation of key pro-inflammatory cytokines, including TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1β; and barrier reinforcement, demonstrated by enhanced secretion of mucin in the colonic mucus layer, restoration of intestinal epithelial tight junction proteins such as ZO-1 and occludin, and reduced infiltration of M1 macrophages and neutrophils. Mechanistic investigations revealed that these therapeutic benefits are mediated through coordinated regulation of critical signaling pathways, including PI3K-Akt, Jak-STAT, TGF-β, and MAPK, which synergistically orchestrate anti-inflammatory responses and barrier restoration. In conclusion, this study introduces an interdisciplinary approach termed “natural medicine-nanotechnology-multitarget modulation,” which presents a multifunctional platform based on plant-derived carbon dots for the treatment of UC. The enhanced efficacy of AM-CDs, surpassing that of conventional 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) treatments, along with their favorable biosafety profile and potential for clinical translation, offers an innovative therapeutic strategy for the precise management of IBD.

Separation of lignin from bamboo using type IV deep eutectic solvents for enhancing the antioxidant properties of chitosan films

Yinzheng Li,Guixin Guo,Tianying Chen,Peng Lu,Yanjun Tang

To promote the functionalization of chitosan-based films, lignin separated from Moso bamboo using type IV deep eutectic solvents (DESs; FeCl 3 /glycerol (Gly), AlCl 3 /Gly, and CuCl 2 /Gly) was incorporated into chitosan to prepare lignin/chitosan composite films. For comparison, lignin pretreated with an aqueous NaOH solution was prepared and used for forming a film. The systematic characterization of lignin samples and lignin/chitosan composite films was performed using advanced analytical techniques. Gel permeation chromatography showed that the type-IV-DES-pretreated lignin sample possessed a lower molecular weight and more uniform structure than the NaOH-pretreated lignin sample, which was more conducive to increasing the compatibility between lignin and chitosan. 31 P nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and two-dimensional heteronuclear correlation results revealed that the excellent antioxidant activity of lignin following AlCl 3 /Gly pretreatment was due to the high phenolic hydroxyl group content (1.16 mmol/g). Moreover, the free-radical scavenging capacity of the resulting DES-pretreated lignin/chitosan composite film reached 83.12 %, which was 3.4-fold higher than that of the pure chitosan film. In general, type-IV-DES-pretreated lignin was superior to NaOH-pretreated lignin in terms of enhancing the ultraviolet-shielding ability, antioxidant capacity, and antibacterial properties of the chitosan films. Notably, these films have great potential for use in food packaging applications.

A Multifunctional Janus Electrospinning Dressing with Sequential Drug-releasing Property for Programmed Treatments of Chronic Infected Wounds

Zhi Qu,Yang Wang,Zequan Liu,Wenzhan Fu,Xinmeng Li,Shenglin Ma,Lingwan Hao,Yu Wang,Weihua Liu,Rujian Jiang

Wound dressings equipped with disinfection and wound tissue regeneration capabilities demonstrate significant potential in chronic wound management. However, current multifunctional dressings can rarely accommodate multiple repair processes accurately due to the time-dependent variational wound microenvironment. Herein, a Janus wound dressing is developed based on electrospun nanofibrous scaffold featuring programmed drug release performance and asymmetrical wettability. Specifically, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofiber membrane as the outer layer to resist the external biofouling and provide essential mechanical support for the inner layer was firstly constructed. Subsequently, the inner layer composed of polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) and polylactic acid (PLA) fibers which are separately loaded with bacterial-targeted nanoparticles (VHA NPs) and composite particle of zeolite imidazolate frameworks-8 containing deferoxamine (ZD NPs) is fabricated on the PVDF membrane. Experimental results demonstrated that the degradation rate of the inner layer could be precisely controlled to sequentially deliver the loaded drugs into the wound site. Taking advantages of the synergistic therapeutic effects including significant antibacterial activity, admired antioxidant property and remarkable angiogenesis performances, the fabricated Janus dressing (PF/PHPD) achieves superior performance for promoting infected wound healing in a full-thickness skin wound model, much better than that of conventional bandage and clinical antibiotic treated wound.

Ultrasonic extraction of polyphenols from roots of Ilex asprella: Structural characterization, antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-hyperlipidemic activities

Jiarong Su,Peishan Li,Xinrui Tang,Zihao Chen,Qiang Peng,Huilin Li,Qianhua Zhang,Shengjie Lu,Famin Wen,Huaicheng Qin,Yongguang Bi,Juan Guo,Fansheng Kong,Haijie Jin,Canzhao Chen,Huiyan Xu

Plant polyphenols have gained increasing attention due to their abundant and powerful biological activities. However, polyphenols from roots of Ilex asprella (RIAPs) remain largely unexplored, with limited research on their composition and bioactivity, making it necessary to focus on RIAPs. In the present study, single - factor analysis and response surface optimization were performed for the extraction of RIAPs via an ultrasonic bath extraction method. The findings demonstrated that at 50 % ethanol concentration, 30 min of ultrasonic time, and 300 W of ultrasonic power, the maximum extraction content of RIAPs was 30.14 ± 0.41 mg/g. Compound and structural analysis via high-resolution liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and a Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrometer confirmed that polyphenols were the majority of compounds comprising RIAPs, in addition to small amounts of alkaloids and trace amounts of other compounds such as amino acids. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images revealed that RIAPs exhibited a densely reticulated and fragmented microstructure. In addition, bioactivity experiments demonstrated significant antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-hyperlipidemic activities of RIAPs, supporting their potential pharmaceutical applications. This study provides an experimental foundation for further pharmacological research and potential drug development of RIAPs.
