HighlightsPTFE/SiO2–ER/FR superhydrophobic coatings for anti-icing and de-icing of insulators were designed. The micro/nanoscale hierarchical structure imparts good superhydrophobicity to PTFE/SiO2–ER/FR.PTFE/SiO2–ER/FR superhydrophobic coatings achieve good durability against UV irradiation or freeze–thaw cycling.PTFE/SiO2–ER/FR superhydrophobic coatings possess good anti-icing and de-icing performance under natural icing conditions. This work describes the preparation of PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene)/SiO2(silicon dioxide)–ER (epoxy resin)/FR (fluorosilicone resin) superhydrophobic coatings using the spray method to improve the anti-icing and de-icing performance of transmission line insulators. The coatings exhibit a consistent fluorine distribution (32.86 wt%), which enhances their low surface energy, alongside SiO2nanoparticles that occupy the interstices between PTFE particles, resulting in a dense micro- and nanoscale hierarchical structure. Consequently, the coatings have good superhydrophobicity, featuring a contact angle of 173.9° and roll angle of 1.2°. Following 66 days of UV irradiation, the contact angle remains above 150°, and the roll angle is approximately 15°, accompanied by a slight increase in ice adhesion strength. Following 26 freeze–thaw cycles, the contact angle stabilizes at around 157°, showing good environmental durability. Natural icing studies validate the coatings’ good anti-icing and de-icing efficacy: in comparison to common insulators, the coated insulators demonstrate a 14.2% reduction in ice accretion weight and a 67.7% reduction in maximum ice ridge length.

Background Benzophenones (BPs), widely used UV filters and endocrine disruptors globally known for their estrogenic effects, are raising growing concerns about chronic reproductive toxicity in males due to their increasing environmental concentrations. This study aims to reveal the effects and mechanisms of male reproductive injury induced by environmentally relevant concentrations of BPs exposure. Methods The study employed NHANES analysis, animal experiments, cell experiments, network toxicology, and molecular docking, and used transcriptome sequencing along with various biochemical and molecular experimental methods to measure downstream indicators. Results Analysis of the NHANES database indicates that BP-3 exposure showed dose-dependent associations with reduced total testosterone (TT)/estradiol (E2)/sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) and elevated testosterone deficiency (TD) risk. Effects attenuated but held direction after multi-pollutant adjustment. The results of animal experiments indicate that chronic exposure to BPs (PND1-PND240) impaired fertility and offspring development, reduced body weight, anogenital distance, and testis coefficient, and altered histopathology, sperm quantity, and quality. Differentially expressed genes were predominantly enriched in energy metabolism and integrity of actin cytoskeleton, and disulfidptosis-related metabolic/redox indicators were dysregulated in the testis. Notably, even short-term exposure to BP-3 disturbs the levels of disulfidptosis-associated metabolic drivers (PND1-PND56). In GC-2 cells, BP-3 reduced cell viability and antioxidant capacity, induced morphological alterations, elevated ROS level, and upregulated disulfidptosis markers. The involvement of disulfidptosis was confirmed by the addition of the antagonist TCEP and agonist KL-11743. Notably, estrogen receptor (ER) directly regulates disulfidptosis. Zeaxanthin dipalmitate (ZD) alleviates BPs-induced male reproductive injury by modulating disulfidptosis. Co-culture assays further confirmed BP-3 disrupts testicular metabolic coupling and triggers disulfidptosis. Conclusion BPs exposure induces male reproductive dysfunction via ER-mediated disulfidptosis. ZD can alleviate this dysfunction. Mitochondrial short-chain enoyl-CoA hydratase 1 deficiency (ECHS1D) is a rare and severe encephalopathy linked to neurodevelopmental disorders, yet the connection between metabolic dysfunction and impaired neurogenesis remains unclear. In this study, we demonstrate that the loss of Echs1 in neural stem/progenitor cells (NSPCs) leads to fatty acid accumulation, which hinders proliferation and differentiation while promoting apoptosis. Mechanistically, Echs1 deficiency increases crotonyl-CoA levels, resulting in global histone crotonylation (Kcr) with an enrichment of H3K9cr. Neurodevelopmental gene promoters, such as the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress regulator Atf4 , acquire H3K9cr. Atf4 then upregulates fatty acid synthase ( Fasn ), creating a feed-forward loop that exacerbates lipid accumulation. Inhibiting Fasn can rescue these defects. Alleviating ER stress through tauroursodeoxycholic acid (TUDCA) or Atf4 inhibition restores neurogenesis in vitro and enhances survival in vivo. This study uncovers an Echs1 -H3K9cr- Atf4 - Fasn axis that links metabolism to neurogenesis through epigenetic reprogramming and suggests TUDCA as a potential treatment for ECHS1D. In neural stem cells, ECHS1 deficiency rewires metabolism, driving a histone crotonylation-dependent feedback loop that impairs neurogenesis. The study reveals a mechanistic link between mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation and brain development and suggests tauroursodeoxycholic acid as a potential therapy.

Although extensive research has been conducted on cation vacancies in photocatalysts, the significance of vacancy defects in photocatalytic reactions and deep-going understanding of the intrinsic mechanisms are still limited. Herein, an appropriate introduction of zinc vacancies on ZnIn 2 S 4 (ZIS) is rationally designed through Er or La (Er/La)-doping. Aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) directly demonstrates distinct zinc vacancies (V Zn ), which is also confirmed by electron spin resonance analysis. The results of experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations manifest that Er/La-doping not only promotes the formation of V Zn but also enhances the built-in electric field, thus facilitating the rapid transfer of carriers. In addition, femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy (fs-TAS) reveals that V Zn induces a supplementary charge transfer pathway, thereby enhancing charge separation efficiency. As a result, the desired photocatalytic CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) to syngas capacity is finally achieved on Er 0.2 -ZIS, with tunable H 2 /CO ratios, exceeding that of untreated ZIS by over 2 times. This study not only exploits a novel avenue to develop high-activity cation vacancies photocatalysts but also provides new perspectives in regulating the photogenerated carrier dynamics.

Considering the economic benefits and environmental pollution, it is of great significance to recover rare earth elements from wastewater. In this article, the modified bacterial cellulose is the raw material, and multi-wall carbon nanotubes are added to construct together. The ion imprinting technology is introduced to prepare a silicon-based modified film for the recovery of Er(III) and selectively adsorption function of Er(III) in experiments. The maximum adsorption amount of modified carbon nanotube silicon bacterial cellulose composite imprinted membrane can reach 46.52 mg L−1, and the adsorption capacity is greatly improved compared to other methods that of the non-imprinted membrane. The adsorption efficiency of Er(III) can reach 92%.

Pure cubic phase and uniform BiF3:Ln3+ (Ln = Ho, Er, Tm)/Yb3+ nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared by coprecipitation. The growth mechanism of BiF3:2%Er3+/20%Yb3+ NPs was proposed based on evolution analysis of the time-dependent morphology, in which BiF3:2%Er3+/20%Yb3+ was formed through the growth process of “nucleation to crystallization and Ostwald ripening”. The upconversion luminescence (UCL) properties and mechanism of BiF3:Ln3+ (Ln = Ho, Er, Tm)/Yb3+ under dual-wavelength excitation were also systematically investigated. The emission intensity of BiF3:2%Er3+/20%Yb3+ by dual-wavelength excitation (λ = 980 nm + 1550 nm) was 1.49 times more than that excited by 1550 nm or 980 nm individually. Furthermore, the properties of the bright white and multicolor UCL showed that yellow, purple, green, or pinkish light could be observed by controlling the doping concentration of Ln3+ (Ln = Yb, Er, Tm, and Ho), indicating that they had potential applications in backlight sources of color displays and security labeling. The temperature sensitivity of BiF3:2%Er3+/20%Yb3+ exhibited a downward tendency and its max value was about 0.0036 K−1 at 273 K. Cell toxicity tests showed that the UCNPs in phospholipid aqueous solution presented low cytotoxicity. Also, in vivo imaging and X-ray imaging revealed that the BiF3:2%Er3+/20%Yb3+ NPs had deep penetration and high contrast, which meant it could be used as a potential probe and contrast agent in in vivo optical bioimaging.

A plasmon-enhanced upconversion composite Y 2 O 3 :Er/Au@TiO 2 (SYE/A@T) with a three-dimensional starlike morphology is prepared and then mixed with submicron TiO 2 (200 nm) to form a multifunctional scattering layer in TiO 2 -based dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). In such starlike micronsized upconverter, Au nanoparticle-assisted plasmon effect can intensify the upconversion emission of Y 2 O 3 :Er, and simultaneously TiO 2 coating can improve the charge transport within SYE/A@T. Therefore, the SYE/A@T shows extended light-absorbing range to near-infrared region and improved light-scattering ability, leading to an improved photovoltaic performance of DSSCs. With the optimum mixing ratio, a conversion efficiency of 8.62% is attained, which is a significant improvement of 27.6% compared with the cell without adding SYE/A@T. Our work provides a feasible strategy to prepare an upconversion composite with plasmon-enhanced emission and enable this composite to accommodate the DSSCs system and improve the conversion efficiency of DSSCs.

Ultrasmall pure hexagonal phase NaYF4:Yb,Er is successfully prepared via the solvothermal method. The upconversion (UC) luminescence of hexagonal phase NaYF4:Yb,Er nanocrystals is ten times stronger than that of cubic phase nanocrystals with the same size of 6 nm. XRD results reveal that heating above 673 K leads to conversion of the hexagonal phase to the high-temperature cubic phase, whereas the cubic nanocrystals undergo phase transformation from normal cubic at room temperature to hexagonal at 673 K and further to high-temperature cubic above 773 K. The hexagonal nanocrystals exhibit emission enhancement after heat treatment up to 573 K. Further heating above 773 K induces a decreasing trend in emission due to the phase transition to the high-temperature cubic phase. The cubic phase exhibits decreasing luminescence with temperature due to strong cross relaxation and then increasing luminescence above the temperature of 673 K due to the hexagonal phase transformation. The luminescent properties of both the normal cubic phase and high-temperature cubic phase indicate that different crystal fields exist in these two phases due to the rearrangement of ligands around Er3+ at high temperature.

Oral administration of TMAO elevated aqueous humor TMAO levels and effectively delayed cataract progression in diabetic rats. • TMAO inhibited the upregulated migration, apoptosis, ROS production and epithelial-mesenchymal transition levels induced by high glucose in lens epithelial cells. • RNA-seq confirmed that the attenuation of endoplasmic reticulum stress is a key mechanism underlying the protective effects of TMAO against high-glucose-induced phenotypic changes in lens epithelial cells. • TMAO protected lens epithelial cells against high-glucose-induced endoplasmic reticulum stress by improving the solubility of unfolded protein. • TMAO shows potential as a safe and effective treatment for diabetic cataract by targeting endoplasmic reticulum stress, without accelerating diabetic disease progression. This study aims to investigate the protective effects of trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), a natural occurring chaperone, on delaying diabetic cataract (DC) progression. Rats were divided into 4 experimental groups: untreated controls, TMAO treatment only, streptozotocin-induced diabetic mellitus (DM), and DM with TMAO therapy. After 10 weeks, aqueous humor TMAO levels and lens opacity were assessed. Immunofluorescence analyses and Western blotting were utilized to evaluate epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-related genes in lens epithelial cells (LECs). In vitro, HLE-B3 cells were treated with or without TMAO under high glucose (HG) environment (50 mmol/L), then collected for RNA-seq. Apoptosis and reactive oxygen species (ROS) were evaluated by flow cytometry while endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS)-related genes were observed by western blotting. Elevated aqueous humor TMAO levels were detected in DC rats, compared to controls. In vivo and ex vivo, TMAO reduced HG-induced lens opacity and EMT in LECs. In vitro experiments demonstrated that HG resulted in enhanced apoptosis, migration, ROS and EMT-related genes in HLE-B3 cells while TMAO addition diminished these effects. RNA-seq revealed that the inhibition of ERS was the key factor to reverse the impacts of HG on LECs by TMAO and mechanistic investigations suggested that ERS-related pathway were significantly inhibited in TMAO treated LECs under HG or tunicamycin-induced ERS. Moreover, TMAO improved the solubility of lens protein in DC rats. Our study pioneered the confirmation of the protective role of TMAO in DC through inhibiting lens protein unfolding, suppressing ERS, and alleviating ERS-induced apoptosis, ROS and EMT in LECs.

SnSe demonstrates unparalleled potential in thermoelectric applications, combining non-toxicity, low cost, and abundant sources. Furthermore, polycrystals have good machinability and are easier to prepare. Here, we report a high peak ZT of 2.0 at 873 K in Pb and Er co-doped polycrystalline SnSe prepared through the hydrothermal method. An ultralow lattice thermal conductivity of 0.13 W m−1 K−1 at 873 K is obtained by introducing endogenous hetero-/homo-structural nanoprecipitates and Sn vacancies into the matrix to construct a multiscale scattering structure for phonons. Meanwhile, with the band alignment and flattening induced by Pb and Er co-doping, the effective mass is increased thus leading to a large Seebeck coefficient. Pb and Er co-doping not only optimizes the energy band structure of SnSe, but also optimizes the carrier concentration, thus simultaneously leading to enhanced electrical conductivity as well as enhanced electrical transport properties. Therefore, a high peak ZT of 2.0 is achieved in Pb and Er co-doped polycrystalline SnSe due to the markedly ultralow thermal conductivity and enhanced power factor. This work proposes a novel approach to synergistically regulate the electrical and thermal transport properties of polycrystalline SnSe-based thermoelectric materials through constructing endogenous hetero-/homo-nanostructures combined with band alignment.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) and photothermal therapy (PTT) have been explored widely for application in cancer treatment. In this work, we describe the synthesis of CaTiO3:Yb,Er (CTO) nanofibers co-conjugated with Rose Bengal (RB) and gold nanorods (AuNRs), which offer the potential for combined upconversion photoluminescence (UCPL) and enhanced, synergistic PDT and PTT. Based on this delivery platform, RB and AuNRs served as the PDT and PTT agents, respectively. RB and AuNRs have strong and well-matched absorption with the green and red emissions of UCPL CTO nanofibers respectively, hence a single 980 nm continuous wave laser with deep tissue penetration can be employed to allow PDT and PTT to occur simultaneously. The nanocomposite can effectively convert the near-infrared (NIR) radiation from the laser into a combination of targeted hyperthermia and generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). In comparison with PDT or PTT alone, the combined PDT/PTT treatment showed significantly enhanced suppression of the viability of Hep G2 cells in vitro, demonstrating its potential for use in oncology.

Chemodynamic therapy (CDT) can effectively induce immunogenic cell death (ICD) in tumours and is thus a promising strategy for boosting the efficacy of immunotherapy. However, the mechanism by which CDT enhances ICD and lowers ICD efficiency is unknown and this restricts its clinical application. In this study, a second near-infrared (NIR-II) window irradiation-triggered hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) self-supplying nanocomposite ((Cu 2 Se-CaO 2 )@LA) was constructed. The modified lauric acid was melted by the heat energy of the NIR-II irradiation, to expose the CaO 2 nanoparticles, and they then reacted with water to produce H 2 O 2 and Ca 2+ . H 2 O 2 was then converted to hydroxyl radicals by the photothermal-enhanced CDT process of the Cu 2 Se nanocubes. Notably, the CDT and Ca 2+ overload was found to induce sequential damage to the mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum (ER), which upregulated the PERK-mediated eIF2α phosphorylation pathway and caused subsequent ICD. NIR-II irradiation of the (Cu 2 Se-CaO 2 )@LA also increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation and this was sufficient to increase dendritic cell maturation, attracting cytotoxic T lymphocytes, and suppressing tumour growth in vivo. Overall, we demonstrated that an enhanced CDT strategy under NIR-II exposure and H 2 O 2 self-supply can induce extensive ICD by inducing mitochondria-associated ER stress, which represents a highly effective and promising strategy for ICD amplification and tumour immunotherapy. Statement of significance In this study, a second near-infrared window (NIR-II) irradiation-triggered and H 2 O 2 self-supplying nanocomposite (named (Cu 2 Se-CaO 2 )@LA) was constructed and tested both in vitro and in vivo . These nanoparticles demonstrated promising antitumor activity as designed. Mechanistically, the nanoparticles could damage mitochondria and upregulate the PERK-mediated eIF2αphosphorylation pathway, further causing endoplasmic reticulum stress, and inducing immunogenic cell death through dendritic cell maturation and cytotoxic T lymphocyte recruitment augmented activity. This system represents a highly effective and promising strategy for enhancing tumor immunotherapy and provides new insights for future studies and design refinements.
