Yb3+/Er3+-doped Bi2(MoO4)3−z(WO4)z phosphors were synthesized via a hydrothermal method combined with subsequent calcination. Under the excitation of a light source of 980 nm, Bi2(MoO4)3:Yb3+/Er3+ phosphors exhibited strong upconversion green light and weak red light emissions. By doping WO42− in Bi2(MoO4)3:Yb3+/Er3+ phosphors, the upconversion luminescence intensity of the phosphors significantly enhanced, which is 42 times higher than that of the undoped WO42− phosphor. With an increase in WO42− doping content, the final color coordinates of Bi2(MoO4)3−z(WO4)z:Yb3+/Er3+ phosphors were (0.2352, 0.7274), which is closer to the standard green CIE coordinates. The maximum CP of WO42−-doped phosphors is as high as 116.68%, which is 74.44% higher than that of the undoped WO42− phosphor. Based on the thermally coupled energy levels (TCLs) of Er3+ (2H11/2/4S3/2 → 4I15/2) in Bi2(MoO4)2.7(WO4)0.3:14%Yb3+,3%Er3+ phosphor, the SR value reached a maximum of 0.0081 K−1 at 323 K and the SA value reached a maximum of 0.0099 K−1 at 398 K. The obtained Bi2(MoO4)3−z(WO4)z:Yb3+/Er3+ phosphors are suitable for upconversion luminescent materials for green displays and have potential advantages in optical temperature measurement.

Studies have shown that emissions in the NIR-II and NIR-III regions exhibit high tissue penetration, along with superior performance in biological and medical imaging applications. Therefore, developing NIR phosphors capable of simultaneously show emissions in both the NIR-II and NIR-III regions holds significant value. Herein, we developed a novel Cr 3+ /Er 3+ co-doped NaBaScSi 2 O 7 phosphor that demonstrates efficient dual-band emission in both NIR-II and NIR-III regions under visible light excitation, enabled by highly effective Cr 3+ →Er 3+ energy transfer. The energy transfer efficiencies calculated by the emission intensity and fluorescence lifetime are 65.3% and 47.4%, respectively, with the energy transfer mechanism dominated by dipole-dipole interaction. The prepared phosphor can be effectively excited by multiple excitation sources (378 nm, 492 nm, 808 nm, and 980 nm), generating distinct emission responses, highlighting its potential for anti-counterfeiting applications. Additionally, the distinct temperature-dependent optical properties of Cr 3+ and Er 3+ offer a viable approach for non-contact temperature detection, achieving a relative sensitivity of 0.8% K -1 and a temperature resolution of 0.126 K at 498 K. The NIR-II/III pc-LED fabricated by NaBaScSi 2 O 7 : 1%Cr 3+ , 0.2%Er 3+ demonstrates outstanding non-invasive imaging capability and accurate predictions for organic solvents. This study presents a strategy for developing phosphors capable of simultaneous NIR-II/III emission, and significantly advances their multifunctional applications in NIR optical thermometry and NIR pc-LED technologies.

Harvesting near-infrared (NIR) light to address the energy crisis and environmental pollution remains a challenge. In this study, full-spectrum-driven photocatalysts were realized through the design of Er 3+ /Yb 3+ co-doped Bi 3 Ti 2 O 8 F nanoplates. The Bi 3 Ti 2 O 8 F: Yb 3+ , Er 3+ nanoplates, when excited at 980 nm, demonstrated nearly single-band red upconversion (UC) emission. Furthermore, the corresponding UC emission mechanism was elucidated through the relationship between pump power and the UC emission spectrum. The experimental results and DFT calculation analysis revealed that the Er 3+ dopant ions form an impurity energy level, which broadens the light photoresponse range and promotes the separation of electron-hole (e − /h + ) pairs. Consequently, Bi 3 Ti 2 O 8 F:Yb 3+ , Er 3+ nanoplates exhibit 1.42 times better photocatalytic degradation of ciprofloxacin (CIP) than Bi 3 Ti 2 O 8 F under full-spectrum light irradiation and 4.54 times better than Bi 3 Ti 2 O 8 F: Er 3+ under NIR light irradiation. The trapping experiments and EPR analysis reveal that •O 2 – and h + are the main active species during the photocatalytic reaction process. Thus, this work demonstrates that efficient bismuth-based broadband photocatalysts can be developed through the simultaneous application of UC emission and doping engineering.

Multifunctional phosphors that integrate optical temperature measurement and counterfeit detection capabilities have garnered considerable interest owing to their diverse application potential. In this study, novel CaLaLiTeO6:Mn4+/Er3+phosphors were prepared via the high-temperature solid-phase method. The phase structure and morphology characterization confirmed the successful synthesis of CaLaLiTeO6material with effective doping of Mn4+and Er3+into the host lattice. Upon excitation at 379 nm, the CaLaLiTeO6:Mn4+/Er3+material exhibits far-red emission at 716 nm (Mn4+:2Eg→4A2g) and green emission at 525/548 nm (Er3+:2H11/2/4S3/2→4I15/2). The emission peak intensities of Er3+and Mn4+ions in the CaLaLiTeO6:0.015Mn4+/0.01Er3+sample displayed distinct variations with temperature under different excitation wavelengths (325 nm, 379 nm, and 980 nm). Subsequently, a dual-mode optical temperature sensing system was developed based on the fluorescence intensity ratio and the dual excitation single-band ratiometric method, which achieved a maxed relative sensitivity of 1.12% K−1at 343 K. Moreover, the excitation-dependent luminescence color changes of CaLaLiTeO6:Mn4+/Er3+make it particularly suitable for anti-counterfeiting applications. The present study underscores the dual-functional capabilities in sophisticated non-contact optical temperature measurement and anti-counterfeiting applications.

Photoluminescence (PL) and mechanoluminescence (ML), serving as core mechanisms of emerging intelligent luminescent materials, hold momentous promise for applications in information security, display technologies, and self-powered sensing. However, conventional intelligent luminescent materials face critical limitations, including the difficulty in constructing multiplexing systems, dependence on ultraviolet (UV) pre-irradiation, and constraints of monochromatic emission. To address these limitations, a series of Er 3+ mediated piezoelectric Ca 3 Ga 4 O 9 :Eu 3+ samples is designed and developed, establishing a four-wavelength-excitation optical multiplexing platform, where each excitation source selectively activated distinct lanthanide energy transfer pathways while enabling tricolor PL tuning from orange-red to yellow to green. Simultaneously, intriguing ML is also achieved, featuring non-pre-irradiation and multicolor (continuous red-to-green emission) tunability characteristics. More importantly, combining systematic experimental investigations and density functional theory calculations, the underlying mechanism of the ML has been elucidated as the synergistic contribution of triboelectric and piezoelectric effects. The developed Ca 3 Ga 4 O 9 :Eu 3+ embellished by Er 3+ displayed intriguing potential application in grayscale analysis anti-counterfeiting films, and self-powered cipher lock system.

Here, a new type of Sb 3+ ions alloying with RE 3+ (RE = Er, Ho) ions heavy concentration doped Cs 2 NaBiCl 6 double perovskites (DPs) was successfully synthesized by solvothermal method. The structure and morphology of all samples were characterized with X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The excitation and emission spectra for all samples are investigated in detailed. Under 354 nm excitation, a strong broad blue emission band from 400 to 500 nm is obtained in Cs 2 NaBiCl 6 :15 mol%Sb 3+ DPs. Compared with the Cs 2 NaBiCl 6 :RE 3+ sample, the emission intensities of Er 3+ and Ho 3+ ions for Cs 2 NaBiCl 6 :Sb 3+ /RE 3+ DPs are enhanced by 38 and 29 times due to alloying Sb 3+ ions, respectively. And the self-trapped exciton (STE) emission intensity is also dramatically increased. The energy transfer process from free exciton (FE) to STE and excited state level of RE 3+ contribute to increased luminescence intensity. In addition, the temperature-dependent luminescence spectra of Cs 2 NaBiCl 6 :Sb 3+ /RE 3+ samples were measured from 83 to 423 K. The luminescence thermal enhancement phenomenon is obtained at lower temperature range. At last, the anti-counterfeiting application of Cs 2 NaBiCl 6 :Sb 3+ /RE 3+ samples is elaborated due to their bright multi-color emission under different excitation and temperatures.

A series of chiral nanostructured bismuth bromide doped with Er 3+ , Yb 3+ (D-BYE) phosphors were synthesized using a solvothermal method followed by an air annealing strategy. The upconversion luminescence (UCL) spectra were also recorded under 980 nm laser excitation in the temperature range from 295 to 565 K. The UCL intensity of D-BYE is about 34 times higher compared to the achiral nanostructured bismuth bromide doped with Er 3+ , Yb 3+ (A-BYE) phosphor. Optical temperature sensing of phosphors was achieved by evaluating the temperature sensing behavior using thermally coupled (TCLs) or non-thermally coupled (NTCLs) levels of Er 3+ . Impressively, the maximum relative sensitivity (S R ) value of the D-BYE phosphor was 1.32% K -1 using the NTCLs method, which is about 1.6 times higher than the sensitivity of the TCLs-based method (0.86% K -1 ). The results of this work demonstrate the great potential of D-BYE phosphors for optical temperature sensing.

A series of Er 3+ /Yb 3+ co-doped NaY(WO 4 ) 2 (NYWO) phosphors are prepared by molten salt synthesis (MSS) with Na 2 SO 4 as solvent. The holding temperature, holding time, and solvent-to-solute mass ratio parameters are regulated. The structure, morphology, and luminescence properties of the samples were tested by XRD, SEM, and fluorescence spectrometers, respectively. The lamellar sample is prepared at 900℃ for 5 h when solvent-to-solute is 3, which has the highest pure green upconversion luminescence (UCL) intensity under 980 nm laser excitation. It is demonstrated that the UCL intensity of the samples prepared by MSS is higher than that of solid sintered samples. The maximum absolute sensitivity (S A ) and relative sensitivity (S R ) are 0.012184 K⁻ 1 at 507 K and 0.01102 K⁻ 1 at 303 K, respectively. These materials can be used for pure green luminescence displays and temperature sensing.

A novel upconversion phosphor, Ca 3 (VO 4 ) 2 co-doped with Yb 3+ and Er 3+ , was successfully synthesized via a high-temperature solid-state method. Under 980 nm near-infrared excitation, this material exhibits remarkable upconversion luminescence, with intense green emissions at 527 nm and 550 nm, and a weaker red emission at 657 nm. The optimal doping concentrations were determined to be 0.03 for Yb 3+ and 0.005 for Er 3+ , enabling maximum luminescent efficiency. Spectroscopic investigations including upconversion photoluminescence, excitation, and emission spectra confirmed that the upconversion follows a distinct energy transfer mechanism: Yb 3+ ( 2 F 5/2 ) + Er 3+ ( 4 I 11/2 ) → Yb 3+ ( 2 F 7/2 ) + Er 3+ ( 4 F 7/2 ). In addition to its excellent luminescent properties, the Ca 3 (VO 4 ) 2 : 0.03Yb 3+ /0.005Er 3+ phosphor exhibits reliable optical thermal sensitivity over a wide temperature range (298–673 K), with a peak relative sensitivity of 1.11 % K −1 at 298 K. These outstanding optical characteristics make Ca 3 (VO 4 ) 2 : 0.03Yb 3+ /0.005Er 3+ a promising candidate for display and lighting technologies.

The rapid expansion of data-intensive technologies such as 5G, AI, and cloud computing is pushing optical communication systems to their limits, necessitating the development of advanced materials to extend bandwidth into the L- and U-bands. Fluoro-sulfo-phosphate (FSP) glasses, owing to their multi-anionic compositions and tunable network structures, offer a promising platform for next-generation broadband fiber amplifiers. In this work, a mixed-cation approach employing K + and Ba 2+ is employed to manipulate the local structural environment and enhance glass-forming ability, lifetime (8.7–9.22 ms for Er-doped, ∼10 ms for Er 3 + /Yb 3+ co-doped), emission cross-section (0.59-0.70 × 10 − 20 cm 2 ), energy transfer efficiency (∼85 %), and thermal quenching resistance. Despite their similar sizes and electronegativities, K + and Ba 2+ exhibit contrasting field strengths and polarizabilities, enabling a controlled balance between network connectivity and local disorder. Thermodynamic modeling and experimental results confirm that the introduction of mixed cations significantly broadens the glass-forming region. The addition of AlF 3 further strengthens the network, allowing for the preparation of stable K/Ba-FSP glasses with improved mechanical, thermal, and chemical properties. Spectroscopic analysis reveals a substantial enhancement in L-band emission efficiency and gain characteristics, with performance improvements ranging from 30 % to 150 % over conventional glass hosts. These findings position K/Ba-FSP glasses as a robust and high-performance candidate material system for broadband rare-earth-doped fiber amplifiers and lasers.

NaYF 4 :10Er/0.5Ho/30Ca@NaYF 4 is designed to achieve up-conversion luminescence color adjustment under 980 nm excitation. Ho 3+ doping enhances the red emission level of the system and changes the characteristic green emission into red emission. Importantly, Ho 3+ doping increases the difference in pumping time between green and red excited states. Under short pulse-width laser excitation, the red excited state does not have enough time to be populated, which weakens the emission of red emission, and the ratio of green to red emission will change. It is an effective up-conversion luminescence enhancement method to change the symmetry of crystal field around lanthanide ions by doping Ca 2+ . The green and red emission intensities of NaYF 4 :10Er/0.5Ho/30Ca doped with 30% Ca 2+ ions are 9.0 and 6.3 times higher than those of Ca 2+ free samples, respectively.

Er 3+ -doped oxide glasses face severe concentration quenching at high doping levels, limiting their emission efficiency and laser performance. Here, a germanate glass system achieves ultrahigh Er 3+ doping concentration (11.91 × 10 20 cm −3 ) without significant quenching while enhancing thermal stability (ΔT = 242 °C). Under 980 nm excitation, the 2.7 μm emission exhibits nearly linear intensity growth (R 2 = 97.4%) and achieves a high gain coefficient of 5.75 cm −1 . Moreover, the up-conversion emission shows a tunable color from yellow-green to orange-red, achieving a maximum absolute temperature sensitivity of 3.352 × 10 −3 K −1 at 558 K. The local structure evolution of the Er 3+ and glass network was systematically investigated using Raman spectroscopy, Pair distribution function (PDF), and X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS). This local structural engineering strategy not only provides a viable route for developing high-performance Er 3+ -doped germanate glasses but also broadens prospects for applications in high-power 2.7 μm fiber lasers and multifunctional optical sensors.
