Fluffy-like amphiphilic graphene oxide (f-GO) and its effects on improving the antifouling of PAN-based composite membranes

Wenxin Zhang,Yaqi Zhang,Yuze Wang,Shiwei Tian,Na Han,Wei Li,Wei Wang,Hongwei Liu,Xuhuan Yan,Xingxiang Zhang

Membrane fouling remains a significant restriction for the long-time operation. In this paper, fluffy-like amphiphilic graphene oxide (f-GO) was prepared by simple grafting silane coupling agent (KH-570) onto the graphene oxide matrix, and thus featured with good dispersion behavior in organic solution. The f-GO was further incorporated into the PAN-based (poly(acrylonitrile-methyl acrylate), P(AN-MA)) copolymer during the phase inversion process. Compared with the P(AN-MA) membrane, the resistance of the f-GO/P(AN-MA) composite membrane reduced from 4.49 × 10 −12  m −1 to 1.78 × 10 −12  m −1 . The pure water flux increased from 200 to 326 L/m 2 h, while the water contact angle declined from 92.8° to 68.3°. It is worthy to note that the fouling mode changed from irreversible fouling to reversible fouling , with the total fouling rate showing a half decay. The fouling recovery rate reached 98.16% and the BSA rejection rate increased from 70.59% to 99.33% as 0.5 wt% f-GO was incorporated. The f-GO is easily scaled up and can be widely applied in other polymer matrices , showing potential application prospects in the membrane separation and purification area. The f-GO/P(AN-MA) composite membranes with excellent water flux, BSA rejection and FRR, are candidates for further employment in wastewater purification applications.

Concanavalin A inhibits human liver cancer cell migration by regulating F‑actin redistribution and assembly via MAPK signaling pathway

Haoran Jiang,Xianxin Wen,Xue Zhang,Bingyu Zhang

Concanavalin A (Con A), the first and most typical representative of the legume lectin family, has a potent anti‑liver cancer effect by inducing cell apoptosis and autophagy. However, its function in human liver cancer cell migration remains unclear. The present study investigated the effect of Con A on the viability and migration of human liver cancer cells with different metastatic abilities. It was found that Con A could reduce the viability of human liver cancer cells (HCCLM3, MHCC97L and HepG2) and human hepatocytes (MIHA). In addition, Con A could inhibit human liver cancer cell migration specifically without affecting hepatocytes. Sugar inhibition assay showed that glucose‑related sugar binding sites played an important role in the inhibition of Con A on human liver cancer cell migration. In addition, Con A could affect HCCLM3 migration by activating ERK1/2, JNK1/2/3 and p38 signaling in the MAPK pathway. Moreover, Con A could regulate fibrous actin (F‑actin) redistribution and assembly via the MAPK signaling pathway. However, Con A had no significant effect on the activation of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)‑2 and MMP‑9 in HCCLM3 cells. In conclusion, Con A may bind to glucose‑related receptor protein, activating ERK1/2, JNK1/2/3 and p38 signaling in the MAPK pathway, further contracting cells and reducing the content of F‑actin of single cells to inhibit HCCLM3 cell migration. These results would deepen the links between human liver cancer cell migration and related glycoproteins or signaling molecules, and may provide a new perspective for Con A as a potential anticancer agent.

A unique NLRC4 receptor from echinoderms mediates Vibrio phagocytosis via rearrangement of the cytoskeleton and polymerization of F-actin

Kaiyu Chen,Siyuan Zhang,Yina Shao,Ming Guo,Weiwei Zhang,Chenghua Li

Many members of the nucleotide-binding and oligomerization domain (NACHT)- and leucine-rich-repeat-containing protein (NLR) family play crucial roles in pathogen recognition and innate immune response regulation. In our previous work, a unique and Vibrio splendidus -inducible NLRC4 receptor comprising Ig and NACHT domains was identified from the sea cucumber Apostichopus japonicus , and this receptor lacked the CARD and LRR domains that are typical of common cytoplasmic NLRs. To better understand the functional role of AjNLRC4, we confirmed that AjNLRC4 was a bona fide membrane PRR with two transmembrane structures. AjNLRC4 was able to directly bind microbes and polysaccharides via its extracellular Ig domain and agglutinate a variety of microbes in a Ca 2+ -dependent manner. Knockdown of AjNLRC4 by RNA interference and blockade of AjNLRC4 by antibodies in coelomocytes both could significantly inhibit the phagocytic activity and elimination of V . splendidus . Conversely, overexpression of AjNLRC4 enhanced the phagocytic activity of V . splendidus , and this effect could be specifically blocked by treatment with the actin-mediated endocytosis inhibitor cytochalasin D but not other endocytosis inhibitors. Moreover, AjNLRC4-mediated phagocytic activity was dependent on the interaction between the intracellular domain of AjNLRC4 and the β-actin protein and further regulated the Arp2/3 complex to mediate the rearrangement of the cytoskeleton and the polymerization of F-actin. V . splendidus was found to be colocalized with lysosomes in coelomocytes, and the bacterial quantities were increased after injection of chloroquine, a lysosome inhibitor. Collectively, these results suggested that AjNLRC4 served as a novel membrane PRR in mediating coelomocyte phagocytosis and further clearing intracellular Vibrio through the AjNLRC4-β-actin-Arp2/3 complex-lysosome pathway. Vibrio splendidus is ubiquitously present in marine environments and in or on many aquaculture species and is considered to be an important opportunistic pathogen that has caused serious economic losses to the aquaculture industry worldwide. Phagocytosis is the first step of pathogen clearance and is triggered by specific interactions between host pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) and pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) from invasive bacteria. However, the mechanism that underlies receptor-mediated V . splendidus phagocytosis is poorly understood. In this study, an atypical AjNLRC4 receptor without LRR and CARD domains was found to serve as the membrane receptor for V . splendidus , not the common cytoplasmic NLRs. The Ig domain of AjNLRC4 is replaced with a conventional LRR domain to bind V . splendidus , and the intracellular domain of AjNLRC4 specifically interacts with β-actin to mediate V . splendidus endocytosis in an actin-dependent manner. Endocytic V . splendidus is ultimately degraded in phagolysosomes. Our findings will contribute to the development of novel strategies for treating V . splendidus infection by modulating the actin-dependent endocytosis pathway.

Co-CoF2 heterojunctions encapsulated in N, F co-doped porous carbon as bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts for Zn-air batteries

Yanwei Zhu,Lang Gan,Jianqiao Shi,Gen Huang,Hongmei Gao,Li Tao,Shuangyin Wang

The structural design and atomic adjustment of the catalyst are the main factors that regulate the intrinsic electrocatalytic activity. Herein, we report a novel and facile strategy of synthesizing three-dimensional porous carbon network by polymer-assisted molding strategy. The porous carbon framework with Co-CoF 2 and carbon nanotubes (PCF@CCFCNT) was directly obtained by the calcination, in which Co-CoF 2 heterojunctions uniformly dispersed in the interconnected holes. Benefiting from the special hierarchical porous morphology, the dual-function catalytic activity of Co-CoF 2 heterojunctions and existence of Co-N x species, the as-obtained PCF@CCFCNT composites exhibit excellent performance in the oxygen evolution reaction (η = 300 mV@10 mA cm −2 ), as well as outstanding oxygen reduction reaction performance in alkaline medium (E 1/2  = 0.852 V, vs RHE). Moreover, as an air electrode in Zn-air batteries (ZABs), PCF@CCFCNT demonstrates a large peak power density of 184 mW cm −2 and superior long-term stability, which is much more stable than the one consisting of commercial Pt/C. This finding not only shows a simple composite design to achieve high-performance ZABs but also may stimulate the rapid development of 3D hierarchical porous electrocatalysts for advanced energy technologies.

Performance and mechanism of the separation of C8 α-olefin from F-T synthesis products using novel Ag-DES

Hu Li,Zisheng Zhang,Guanlun Sun,Suli Liu,Liangcheng An,Xingang Li,Hong Li,Xin Gao

As an attractive alternative technology for the separation of long chain olefin and paraffin, a novel silver-based deep eutectic solvent (Ag-DES) was prepared and utilized for 1-octene/n-octane separations. Comprehensive reactive extraction separation experiments were performed to highlight the Ag-DES concentration and operating temperature discriminations using compounds with different ratio of 1-octene/n-octane. The novel Ag-DES showed optimal separation performance regarding 1-octene/n-octane and possessed the highest levels separation selectivity in the range 3.57–16.11 with excellent circulation stability in our best knowledge. Furthermore, FT-Raman measurements and quantum chemistry calculation were performed to elucidate the interaction mechanism of Ag-DES in the separation of 1-octene and n-octane, which revealed that both chemical complexation and strong physical attraction existed in the complex of Ag-DES and 1-octene rather than n-octane. A practical process was proposed for the separation of olefin and paraffin, which indicates that an advanced separation technology could largely reduce the energy consumption. This study lends important insight for the development of Ag-DES reactive extraction separation process for the energy-efficient long chain α-olefins purification from F-T synthesis products.

Precursor Controlled Strategy for N, S, F-Reduced Graphene Oxide (RGO) Preparation and Its Electro-Degradation Toward Bisphenol A

Zhang Qian,Zhou Yu-lian,Wang Bao-zong,Hong Jun-ming

The performance of electrocatalytic-oxidation process depends on the anode characteristics, so the preparation of active anode materials is an attractive method to enhance the efficiency of this process. However, the high catalytic properties of graphene and its derivatives have been well confirmed, an efficient method of controlling catalytic activity and stability remains to be established. In this research, the relationship between the precursor and catalytic performance was clarified by regulating the oxygen-containing groups in the precursor. Results indicated that the surface O groups on the precursor were sensitive to controlling the catalytic activity and stability of tri-doped reduced graphene oxide (RGO). With more O groups in the precursor (catalysts from graphene oxide), the doped heteroatom species is vulnerable involved into reaction, leading to the flaking of active sites, and ultimately decreasing the activity and stability performance. By contrast, the fewer O groups in the precursor (catalysts from RGO) created stable and active defects for oxidation activity. The interactions of O groups in the C precursor with those in the heteroatom precursor were further confirmed by DFT calculations. The findings of this research presented a new strategy for controlling the stability and performance of the resulting catalysts. Graphic Abstract DEME-TFSI-coated GO and GN are first formed via covalent bonds through functional groups (O groups) on the graphene surface, non-covalent ionic bonds, and π–π stacking interactions. In this step, N, S, and F groups are weakly bonded with graphene. Stable pyridine and pyrrole structures could then be generated via dehydration and decarbonylation under a controlled temperature and pressure in the hydrothermal process. Finally, cyclization rearrangement is carried out to form graphite with a tri-doped structure.

Construction and antitumor activity of selenium nanoparticles decorated with the polysaccharide extracted from Citrus limon (L.) Burm. f. (Rutaceae)

Linan Zhou,Ziteng Song,Shaojie Zhang,Yeling Li,Jing Xu,Yuanqiang Guo

Selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs), a potential cancer therapeutic agent, have attracted widespread attention owing to their high bioavailability and remarkable anticancer activity. Nevertheless, the poor water solubility and dispersibility of SeNPs seriously limit their applications. In the present study, we synthesized stable and individual spherical selenium nanoparticles (CL90-Tw-SeNP2) with an average diameter of approximately 79 nm using a polysaccharide extracted from Citrus limon (CL90) and Tween-80 as the decorator and stabilizers. The proportion of selenium in CL90-Tw-SeNP2 was 10.6%. CL90-Tw-SeNP2 possessed high stability and good dispersion in water for more than three months. The subsequent biological assay revealed that CL90-Tw-SeNP2 showed remarkable antitumor effects against HepG2 cells, with an IC 50 value of 49.13 μg/mL, by inducing cell apoptosis. Furthermore, an in vivo zebrafish assay to explore possible applications indicated that CL90-Tw-SeNP2 could inhibit the proliferation and migration of tumors and the zebrafish angiogenesis. These results indicated that CL90-Tw-SeNP2 could be a potential agent for cancer treatment, especially against human liver hepatoma cancer.

Structural and rheological characterization of pectin from passion fruit (Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa) peel extracted by high-speed shearing

Yupeng Lin,Fengping An,Hong He,Fang Geng,Hongbo Song,Qun Huang

In this study, the structural and rheological properties of pectin extracted by high-speed shearing (HSS–P) at 50 °C ultrapure water and conventional heating methods (CE50-P and CE90-P) from passion fruit ( Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa ) peel were evaluated and compared. The HSS-P has loose, honeycomb-like surface morphology, lower molecular weight and higher polydispersity index compared to CE50-P and CE90-P. Monosaccharide composition indicated that HSS-P had more side chains, which were caused by its highly branched molecular structure, short main chains and a high molar ratio of RG-I in the molecular configuration. FTIR spectra showed that high-speed shearing led to a decrease in the linearity of the main chain of the pectin molecule. NMR spectra indicated that the molecular structure of HSS-P was a linear chain of homogalacturonan (HG) inserted into rhamnogalacturonan I (RG-I) possibly with arabinans and galactans as the principal side chains. Furthermore, the effects of pectin concentration, sucrose , CaCl 2 and pH on the rheological properties of different pectins were investigated. All pectin exhibited pseudoplastic fluid behavior at different environmental conditions. The HSS-P samples showed the greatest increase in the apparent viscosity and viscoelasticity in the presence of sucrose (60%–100%) and CaCl 2 (0.1–0.2 g/100 mL), pH changes and increased pectin concentration. The HSS-P was easily combined with the co-solutes and its viscoelasticity showed stronger stability under temperature changes. In conclusion, the high-speed shearing results in a unique molecular structure that contributed to the excellent rheological properties of pectin. Thus providing theoretical guidance for further application of high-speed shearing in extracting pectin.

Xiaobo Min,Mingfei Zhu,Yingjie He,Yunyan Wang,Haoyu Deng,Sheng Wang,Linfeng Jin,Haiying Wang,Liyuan Zhang,Liyuan Chai

Electro-adsorption is attracting increasing attention as an emerging technology for removing ionic species from water but suffer from low selectivity . In this work, a bismuth/reduced graphene oxide nanocomposite electrode was fabricated by a facile and green method. Based on this material, an electrode with improved selectivity by electrochemistry deionization system was successfully fabricated. The bismuth nanoparticles were uniformly covered with reduced graphene oxide plates and the ratio of Bi on the whole materials is 79.56%. Bismuth/reduced graphene oxide showed ions selectivity in the order of Cl −  > F − ≫ SO 4 2 − SO42− . The average Cl − removal capacity can reach as high as 62.59 mg g −1 . Moreover, bismuth/reduced graphene oxide electrodes have good regeneration performance. Typically, in the 10 adsorption-desorption multicycles, the salt absorption/desorption capacity of the hybrid capacitive deionization system is stable and reversible. This research opened a hopeful window to design and synthesize effective materials to selectively remove the ionic species to purify the water.

Facile synthesis of fluorine-doped graphene aerogel with rich semi-ionic C–F bonds for high-performance supercapacitor application

Jin Tianxiang,Chen Jianfa,Wang Chunyan,Qian Yong,Lu Limin

A three-dimensional (3D) fluorine-doped graphene aerogel (FGA) with rich semi-ionic C–F bonds was synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method and applied as the electrode material in supercapacitor. A porous 3D network structure with a high specific surface area of the FGA has been confirmed by the combination of scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and N 2 adsorption method. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy spectra indicated that the FGA was doped predominantly with semi-ionic C–F bonds, which ensured the high electronic conductivity and sufficient electrochemistry active sites of FGA. As a result, the FGA electrode showed a high specific capacity of 279.8 F g −1 at a current density of 0.5 A g −1 , which is much better than that of undoped graphene aerogel (UGA, 141.6 F g −1 ). Even though the current density increased to 10 A g −1 , 90.6% of its specific capacitance was retained. The FGA also maintained about 94.3% of the initial capacitance after 5000 cycles at a current density of 0.5 A g −1 . Furthermore, the assembled FGA//FGA symmetric supercapacitor presented a high energy density of 26.2 W h kg −1  at a power density of 899 W kg −1 . Accordingly, this work offers a facile and efficient approach to produce fluorine-doped graphene materials for high-performance supercapacitor applications.

Facile fabrication of an F-POSS polymer-based liquid-repellent Cu mesh with excellent durability and self-cleaning performance

Guanzhou Luo,Li Wang,Xinying Li,Kai Yang,Yongle Luo,Shouping Xu,Pihui Pi,Xiufang Wen

A facile method that combines alkali-assisted oxidation and –SH chelation with a click chemistry reaction was employed to create an F-POSS polymer surface (fluorinated octavinyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane polymer)-based Cu mesh (F-POSS-OM). The as-prepared F-POSS-OM surface displayed a cohering hierarchical nano-F-POSS polymer granule/micro-Cu(OH)2 wire structure, which provided a re-entrant geometry needed for liquid-repellency and low liquid sliding angles (<15°). Moreover, the easy-prepared structure endows the F-POSS-OM with remarkable durability for mechanical and chemical damages, including wear abrasion, tape-peeling, 100 cm-height hammer impact, severe hand twisting, strong acid/base/salt solutions, and high temperatures. Importantly, F-POSS-OM still retained excellent self-cleaning performance even after being subjected to these damages.

A single-cell system of flow electrode capacitive mixing (F-CapMix) with a cross chamber for continuous energy production

Zhi Zou,Shuo Meng,Xiaolei Bian,Longcheng Liu

The generation of electricity from salinity difference energy between seawater and freshwater through a Capacitive Mixing (CapMix) system with solid electrodes was limited by intermittent energy production. In this study, a single-cell CapMix system using flow-electrode (F-CapMix) with a cross-chamber configuration was examined to produce electricity continuously from simulated seawater and freshwater. The effects of the flow-electrode electrolyte concentration, activated carbon loading, amounts of carbon black, and connected external resistance on the system performance were investigated. The results suggest that the system performance can be enhanced by increasing the activated carbon loading and carbon black amounts. Furthermore, to achieve the maximum power density of the system, the external resistance should be matched to the internal resistance. The maximum power density of the presented single-cell F-CapMix system was 74.3 mW m−2, which was comparable to those of previous CapMix and F-CapMix systems. In addition, this study also reveals that using only carbon black as the flow electrode is capable of producing electricity continuously for long-term operation. In summary, these results indicate the potential of F-CapMix and provide developing directions for further optimization.
