Magnetic carbon materials as the fascinating scavenger have been used for the purification of antibiotic wastewater. However, a majority of the reported magnetic carbon adsorbents suffer from the poor adsorption capacity and costly preparation costs. Herein, we report an in-situ growth of bimetallic FeCo-metal organic frameworks (MOFs) on waste paper-derived CoFe 2 O 4 /porous carbon via a hydrothermal strategy for reinforced clearance of tetracycline. The adsorption properties and mechanisms were systematically explored. Results revealed that the adsorption isotherms obeyed the Langmuir model, and the pseudo-second-order kinetics model could be well used to describe the current adsorption behavior. The maximum Langmuir adsorption capacity of FeCo-MOF@CoFe 2 O 4 /porous carbon toward tetracycline was calculated as 909 mg g −1 , which was significantly higher than that of other reported adsorbents. The ascendant capture property of the current adsorbent was presented under a wide pH range (5.0–12.0) and had excellent resistance to humic acid. In addition, the proposed coating method can also be applied to in-situ grow FeCo-MOF on biomass-derived magnetic porous carbon to enhance removal of tetracycline. Interestingly, the tetracycline adsorbed FeCo-MOF@CoFe 2 O 4 /porous carbon as a sustainable additive was further proved to be used for fruit preservation. Overall, this work provided a new research direction for in-situ architecture of magnetic carbon-based bimetallic MOF materials to treat antibiotic sewage and fruit preservation.

Background Fruit acids have long been recognized as highly effective actives with world-wide popularity, covering skin peeling, anti-acne, anti-wrinkle applications, and skin depigmentation. Aims There are complicated interconnections between the fruit acid formula and skin pigmentation behaviors. However, the lack of systematic researches on multi-ingredient formula restricted our understanding on its mechanism. Therefore, it is of great necessity to study the interactions and cascades among components, potential gene targets, signaling pathways, and biological processes via a system biology approach. Methods We used system biology, molecular fingerprint, and structural biology to calculate and collect target information of the functional formula. Gene Ontology (GO) enrichment analysis was further applied to study the biological processes and pathways of the formula, and a multi-level network model of “component - molecular target - signaling pathway - skin disease” was established. Besides, the zebrafish model was utilized to verify the formula. Results We obtained 69 hub targets by constructing a protein–protein interaction (PPI) network based on the intersection between multi-fruit acids formula (mandelic acid, lactobionic acid, niacinamide, and hydroxytyrosol) and skin indications targets (whitening-sebum balance). In vitro zebrafish models, including pigmentation, antioxidant, and radiation protection models, showed that the current formula significantly alleviated pigmentation intensity and intracellular free radical content, thus proving the efficacy of skin brightening and UV irradiation protection. Conclusions This research uncovered the underlying mechanism of multi-fruit acids formula and predicted its function in skin brightening and UV irradiation prevention.

Excessive solar radiation and high temperature often cause considerable loss and waste of fruits during transportation, retail, and storage. In the current study, a natural deep eutectic solvent-based polyacrylamide/poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogel with nanoparticles (NPs/NADES@PAAm/PVA) is developed for fruit quality protection from solar radiation and high-temperature stress by achieving the combined effect of radiative and evaporative cooling. NPs/NADES@PAAm/PVA presents an average solar reflectance of ∼0.89 and an average emittance at the atmospheric window of ∼0.90. Besides, NPs/NADES@PAAm/PVA possesses excellent flexibility, robust mechanical strength, and good swelling behavior. The fruit preservation experiments under sunlight demonstrate that the pear (Pyrus sinkiangensis) treated with NPs/NADES@PAAm/PVA can achieve an average temperature decrease of ∼15.3 °C after sun exposure compared with the blank, and its quality-related attributes, including color, total soluble solid, relative conductivity, and respiration rate, are similar to the fresh one. Multivariate data analyses, including principal component analysis and cluster analysis, further verify that the pear treated with NPs/NADES@PAAm/PVA possesses similar quality to the fresh one after sun exposure. Thus, NPs/NADES@PAAm/PVA has promising prospects for fruit transportation, retail, and storage under solar radiation in a low-operation-cost and sustainable manner.

In this work, a robust method for the separation of gardenia yellow and geniposide from gardenia fruit was developed based on a molecularly imprinted solid phase extraction (MISPE) procedure. First, hydrophilic molecularly imprinted microspheres (HMIMs) were prepared using gardenia yellow as the template via reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) precipitation polymerization. The resultant HMIMs demonstrated the multiresponsiveness to pH, temperature, and magnetism, achieving controllable uptake and release of gardenia yellow and easy recovery by external magnets. Meanwhile, the HMIMs possessed high adsorption capacity, fast binding kinetics, specific recognition, and reusability. Finally, a MISPE approach using HMIMs as adsorbent was developed for extraction of gardenia yellow and purification of geniposide after optimization of the adsorption and elution conditions. Thus, efficient separation of gardenia yellow and geniposide with relative purities of 99.77 ± 0.05% (94.04 ± 0.10% recovered) and 94.50 ± 0.62% (95.40 ± 0.86% recovered), respectively, was achieved.

Effects of tray rotation speeds (TRS: 0, 20, 40 rpm), temperatures (50, 60, 70 °C) and wavelength spectra (mid and near-infrared) were comparatively evaluated on improving drying kinetics, physicochemical properties and bioactive content of red dragon fruits. Results indicated that successive increases in TRS and temperature led to significant reductions in drying time and increases in drying rates and moisture diffusivity. High TRS (40 rpm) and lower temperatures (50, 60 °C) also improved colour, total soluble solids, rehydration ratio, total phenolics and flavonoid contents, betalain content and antioxidant activity. Meanwhile, NIR drying presented a more energy-efficient approach, but with substantial reductions in quality properties compared with MIR drying. Overall, the results suggested the importance of wavelength absorption properties of plant tissues and potential avoidance of localized overheating for enhanced efficiency during infrared drying and prompted the development of suitable approaches and optimization studies for improving efficiency.

Staphylococcus aureus is a common foodborne pathogen that can cause a suppurative infection after eating contaminated food. Detection of S. aureus plays an important role in the food industry. In this study, a strategy for the detection of S. aureus using magnetic separation (MS) technology combined with rolling circle amplification (MS-RCA) was proposed. The strategy used antibiotics to capture bacteria and employed RCA products as signal output probes. Vancomycin (Van), as a commonly used antibiotic, can recognize peptidoglycan on the cell wall of Gram-positive bacteria and can effectively identify target bacteria. Therefore, we prepared BSAylated-Van functionalized magnetic beads (Van-MBs) for the pre-enrichment of S. aureus . To ensure the selectivity of this method, we used biotin-pig IgG to bind S. aureus . In addition, to amplify the output signal of the MS-RCA strategy, we introduced streptavidin (SA) and successfully obtained the [email protected] S. aureus @biotin-pig [email protected] @biotin-RCA probe complex and used the biotin-avidin-system (BAS) by combining magnetic separation technology and RCA technology to realize the enrichment and specific detection of S. aureus . Furthermore, by optimizing the experimental conditions such as the magnetic separation time and the amount of Van-MBs, the detection performance of this method was improved. Under the optimal conditions, the detection limit of this method for S. aureus was 3.3 × 10 2 CFU/mL in fruit juice, and it was less affected by other bacteria.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of brassinosteroid (BR) on disease development, disease resistance-related enzyme activities, gene expression, and proteomic change in tomato ( Solanum lycopersicum ) fruits infected by Alternaria solani . The results showed that BR pretreatment inhibited disease development and increased the activities of disease resistance-related enzymes. Fruits treated by brassinazole, the biosynthesis inhibitor of BR, are more sensitive to A . solani . BR could promote the gene expression of downstream and upstream in the systematic acquired resistance (SAR) pathways and the catalyzers in the biosynthetic pathways of phenolic and quinone compounds. The proteomic analysis showed that BR upregulated the expression of 2 proteins and downregulated the expression of 13 proteins. Furthermore, one upregulated protein was involved in the phenylpropanoid biosynthetic pathway. These results suggested that BR-mediated disease resistance in tomato fruits could share some SAR downstream genes and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase and also have distinct pathways. Practical applications Brassinosteroid treatment before harvest could be a useful strategy to improve the quality of tomato fruit and reduce postharvest losses caused by fungi disease.

Litchi fruit has high commercial value and significant benefits for humans. However, pericarp browning, as the indicator of litchi fruit senescence, limits the shelf life of litchi fruit. Effect of α-lipoic acid (α-LA) that has great antioxidant potential, on litchi fruit senescence was investigated. Results showed that α-LA delayed pericarp browning and attenuated redox stress of litchi fruit, indicated by lower hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) and superoxide radical (O 2 −· ) contents but higher hydroxy radical scavenging rate. Compared to control, α-LA treatment enhanced enzymatic: superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and glutathione reductase (GR) as well as nonenzymatic antioxidants: glutathione (GSH) and ascorbate (AsA). Meanwhile, α-LA was protective against oxidative stress by inducing glutaredoxin ( LcGrx ), thioredoxin ( LcTrx ) and methionine sulfoxide reductase ( LcMsr ) expression levels. These α-LA-induced antioxidant systems directly increased the antioxidant capacity. Further research indicated that α-LA pretreatment maintained higher intracellular ATP level and activated extracellular ATP signaling through up-regulating LcDORN1s expression, indirectly increasing the antioxidant capacity. In conclusion, α-LA is effective to increase the antioxidant capacity and delay the pericarp browning of litchi fruit.

Effect of nano-SiO 2 packing on postharvest quality and antioxidant capacity of two different loquat cultivars (white-flesh ‘Qingzhong’ and red-flesh ‘Dawuxing’) were determined. Results showed that nano-SiO 2 packing significantly inhibited internal browning, retarded the decline of total soluble solids, titratable acidity, ascorbic acid content and extractable juice in both cultivars. Decay index of nano-SiO 2 packing in ‘Dawuxing’ and ‘Qingzhong’ was 53.25% and 42.84% lower than control after the day 12, respectively. Meanwhile, nano-SiO 2 packing enhanced the contents of individual phenolic compounds and soluble sugar compounds, induced higher superoxide dismutase and catalase activities, which contributed to improving 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl and hydroxyl radical scavenging capacity. Furthermore, the contents of total soluble solids, ascorbic acid and soluble sugar were higher in ‘Qingzhong’ than those in ‘Dawuxing’, which dedicated to better quality. These results indicated that nano-SiO 2 packing was a promising approach in inhibiting decay, maintaining quality and expanding shelf life of loquats.

The present study investigated the effects of oligochitosan, salicylic acid (SA), and Pichia membranaefacien s on inducing disease resistance against Geotrichum candidum in citrus fruit by using iTRAQ proteomic and physico-chemical analysis. Our finding showed that with pre-treatment of oligochitosan, SA and P. membranaefaciens , disease incidences and lesion diameter infected by G. candidum were both significantly reduced. Proteomics analysis indicated that the differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were significantly enriched in the pathways of starch and sucrose metabolism, carbon metabolism and amino acid metabolism induced by the three elicitors. Primary metabolites analysis showed that the three elicitors significantly stimulated the accumulation of primary metabolites that closely associated with the defense response such as hexoses, xylose, oxalic acid, proline, glutamate, aspartate, cysteine, etc. Moreover, the marked accumulation of organic acid such as citric acid, α-ketoglutarate, succinic acid, malic acid and fumaric acid which affect the TCA cycle was also observed in three elicitors treated citrus. In conclusion, primary metabolites induced by oligochitosan, SA and P. membranaefaciens behaved as the source of energy and substrates or signaling molecules that directly or indirectly participated in defense responses to against sour rot in citrus fruit.

This study investigated the chemical and volatile characteristics of sea buckthorn fruits from three different regions in China. The chemical composition of the volatile oil was determined by using a non-targeted gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC/MS) method and the differences in chemical composition among the three producing areas were compared by heatmap providing a visual basis for researchers. A total of 93 compounds were identified, including 52 compounds from the Northeast China, 51 from the Xinjiang region, and 37 from Inner Mongolia region. Then, the in vitro antioxidant activity of sea buckthorn fruit oil was measured using DPPH, ABTS, and SOD inhibition tests, and the results showed that sea buckthorn fruit oil in northeast China was the strongest antioxidant, followed by Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang. The results of the CCK-8 experiment indicated that within the tested concentration, there is no cell cytotoxicity of the essential oil in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) cells. The results could supply reference to distinguish sea buckthorn fruit from different production areas and, meanwhile, clarify the activity and safety of sea buckthorn oil.

Background: Propionibacterium acnes causes upregulation of inflammatory factors, such as cycloxygenase-2, prostaglandin E2, interleukin-1β, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha, increased levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and inward flow of calcium ions. This causes increased levels of the antimicrobial peptide LL-37 and inflammation of the skin, leading to redness, swelling, itching and other symptoms. Schisandra chinensis fruit oil (SCO) is rich in lignan active ingredients with various antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Methods: In this study, SCO is obtained by supercritical CO2 fluid extraction. SCO’s anti-inflammatory actions were investigated using P. acnes-induced inflammation HaCaT cells model. A method based on reversed-phase high-pressure liquid chromatography with a diode array detector was developed and validated for the simultaneous detection of five lignan components. Levels of inflammatory factors and LL-37 were measured by ELISA kit and western blot respectively. Ca2+ and ROS levels detected by flow cytometry. Results: The experimental results show that the contents of schisanol A, schisanol B, schisanin A, schisanin B, and schisanin C were 33.89 ± 0.24, 14.89 ± 0.45, 8.92 ± 0.02, 29.14 ± 0.67, and 4.74 ± 0.09 mg/g, respectively. Studies have demonstrated that SCO can alleviate skin inflammation by inhibiting the COX-2/PGE2 and NF-κB signalling pathway. In addition, SCO can inhibit ROS production, significantly block inward Ca2+ flow, alleviate cell damage, and modulate the content of the antimicrobial peptide LL-37. Conclusions: In summary, our study elucidated the anti-inflammatory activity of SCO in a cell model and provided a scientific basis for its application as a raw material in skin care.
