The development of metal ion detection probes with high sensitivity and selectivity is of utmost importance for the promotion of public health and environmental sustainability. In this work, a series of ratiometric fluorescent probes (RhB@UiO-67-NH 2 ) were successfully prepared using a one-pot method for the detection of metal ions, particularly As 5+ and Fe 3+ . Notably, the ratiometric fluorescent probe RhB@UiO-67-NH 2 (1:4) demonstrates dual functionality as a Fe 3+ turn-off probe and an As 5+ turn-on probe. The limits of detection (LODs) for As 5+ and Fe 3+ using RhB@UiO-67-NH 2 (1:4) were determined to be 0.521 μM (39.03 ppb) and 0.107 μM (5.97 ppb), respectively, which were the lowest records of reported LMOFs so far. The fluorescence quenching of Fe 3+ can be attributed to various mechanisms such as fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET), photoinduced electron transfer (PET), and competitive absorption (CA). Additionally, the fluorescence enhancement of As 5+ is primarily due to absorbance-caused enhancement (ACE) and PET. Moreover, the composite material RhB@UiO-67-NH 2 (1:4) exhibited excellent anti-interference capability and reproducibility for detecting Fe 3+ and As 5+ . The removal efficiency of As 5+ by RhB@UiO-67-NH 2 (1:4) exceeded 50.9 % when the initial concentration of As 5+ was below 20 mg/L. This work presents a valuable reference for future investigations and utilization of As 5+ and Fe 3+ sensing.

Activation of S 2 O 8 2− by Fe 2+ is suppressed under non-acidic pH conditions, strongly hindering its application for water purification. To this end, this study reported an efficient photo-Fenton activation of S 2 O 8 2− by Fe 3+ -tartaric acid complex at circumneutral pH. The results showed that UVA irradiation induced a rapid photogeneration of Fe 2+ from Fe 3+ -tartaric acid complex at circumneutral pH, by which efficient photo-Fenton activation of S 2 O 8 2− was obtained to generate sulfate radical (SO 4 •- ), as evidenced by radical quenching study in combination with electron spin resonance measurement. The process efficiency was optimized in terms of the tartaric acid:Fe 3+ ratio, Fe 3+ -tartaric acid complex dosage, S 2 O 8 2− dosage and UV fluence. Notably, the photo-Fenton catalytic efficiency of Fe 3+ -tartaric acid (1:1) complex for S 2 O 8 2− was comparable to the Fe 3+ -EDDS (1:1) and Fe 3+ -citric acid (1:1) complexes, and more efficient than the Fe 3+ -NTA (1:1), Fe 3+ -EDTA (1:1), Fe 3+ -oxalic acid (1:1) and Fe 3+ -malonic acid (1:1) complexes. It is noticed that the process efficiency can be hindered by the presence of humic acid, phytic acid and HCO 3 − . Nevertheless, almost complete degradation of carbamazepine in actual secondary effluents at environmental relevant concentration was obtained under the optimal conditions of 100 μM Fe 3+ -tartaric acid (1:1) complex, 2 mM S 2 O 8 2− , pH 5.0–6.0, 25 °C and UV fluence of 5.0 J cm −2 . By considering the promising photo-Fenton catalytic efficiency and environmentally benign manner of Fe 3+ -tartaric acid complex, it has large potential application for the treatment of emerging micropollutant in water.

A novel ratiometric fluorescent chemodosimeter REPN based on 1,8-naphthalimide-rhodamine was successfully synthesized. Two different strategies of fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) and photo-induced electron transfer (PET) for ratiometric detection of Hg 2+ /Fe 3+ were designed into one sensing system. REPN exhibits typical FRET signal from pyridine-naphthalimide moiety to rhodamine moiety which was induced by Hg 2+ with a detection limit of 2.72 × 10 −6 M in EtOH/PBS buffer (1:1, v/v, pH = 7.4) solution. However, the probe REPN performed ratiometric detection behavior via PET process combined with the classical ring-opening sensor system in the presence of Fe 3+ , the detection limit was 5.7 × 10 −7 M. REPN emitted bright yellow fluorescence in solid state and the maximum emission wavelength was 538 nm. Besides, the silica nanoparticles loaded AIE dye REPN maintained and further reinforced the AIE effect with higher water solubility.

Iron ion (Fe3+) which is the physiologically most abundant and versatile transition metal in biological systems, has been closely related to many certain cancers, metabolism, and dysfunction of organs, such as the liver, heart, and pancreas. In this Research Article, a novel Nile red derivative (NRD) fluorescent probe was synthesized and, in conjunction with polymer-modified core–shell upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs), demonstrated in the detection of Fe3+ ion with high sensitivity and selectivity. The core–shell UCNPs were surface modified using a synthesized PEGylated amphiphilic polymer (C18PMH-mPEG), and the resulting mPEG modified core–shell UCNPs (mPEG-UCNPs) show good water solubility. The overall Fe3+-responsive upconversion luminescence nanostructure was fabricated by linking the NRD to the mPEG-UCNPs, denoted as mPEG-UCNPs-NRD. In the nanostructure, the core–shell UCNPs, NaYF4:Yb,Er,Tm@NaGdF4, serve as the energy donor while the Fe3+-responsive NRD as the energy acceptor, which leads to efficient luminescence resonance energy transfer (LRET). The mPEG-UCNPs-NRD nanostructure shows high selectivity and sensitivity for detecting Fe3+ in water. In addition, benefited from the good biocompatibility, the nanostructure was successfully applied for detecting Fe3+ in living cells based on upconversion luminescence (UCL) from the UCNPs. Furthermore, the doped Gd3+ ion in the UCNPs endows the mPEG-UCNPs-NRD nanostructure with effective T1 signal enhancement, making it a potential magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agent. This work demonstrates a simple yet powerful strategy to combine metal ion sensing with multimodal bioimaging based on upconversion luminescence for biomedical applications.

Herein, a simple, green, and low-cost way was developed in the synthesis of fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) with well-distributed size, using one-pot hydrothermal treatment of rose-heart radish. The as-prepared carbon dots exhibit exceptional advantages including high fluorescent quantum yield (13.6%), excellent biocompatibility, low-toxicity, and satisfactory chemical stability. More strikingly, as-synthesized N-CDs generate strong response to Fe 3+ ions and gives rise to the fluorescence quenching. This phenomenon was used to develop a fluorescent method for facile detection of Fe 3+ with a linear range from 0.02 to 40 μM and a detection limit of 0.13 μM (S/N = 3), and further extended to measure environmental water samples with satisfactory recoveries. Eventually, the low toxicity and strongly fluorescent carbon dots were applied for cell imaging and the quenched fluorescence by adding Fe 3+ , demonstrating their potential towards diverse applications.

Direct detection of Fe 3+ ions is of significant importance in view of both clinical and environmental applications. In the present study, we presented the construction of a paper-based colorimetric sensor by alternative modification of commercial cellulose paper with TiO 2 membrane as intermediate layer, hydrophobic/hydrophilic coating to obtain uniform diffusion, and decoration of –NH 2 and –SH groups for gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) immobilization. After optimization of fabrication and detection conditions, the colorimetric sensor showed a linear concentration-dependent colorimetric response (ΔG) in the presence of Fe 3+ concentrations ranging from 1.0 to 37 μM (R 2 > 0.98). The detection limit was calculated to be 0.85 μM (3δ) with good selectivity. Besides, the sensor also showed high resistance to AuNPs leaking in aqueous solutions, and demonstrated consistent measurement of Fe 3+ in serum samples. Those results suggested that as-prepared sensor strip is potential useful for Fe 3+ ion determination in clinical and environmental samples.

Rapidly obtaining strong photoluminescence (PL) of carbon dots with high stability is crucial in all practical applications of carbon dots, such as cell imaging and biological detection. In this study, we proposed a rapid, continuous carbon dots synthesis technique by using a microreactor method. By taking advantage of the microreactor, we were able to rapidly synthesized CDs at a large scale in less than 5 min, and a high quantum yield of 60.1% was achieved. This method is faster and more efficient than most of the previously reported methods. To explore the relationship between the microreactor structure and CDs PL properties, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were carried out. The results show the surface functional groups and element contents influence the PL emission. Subsequent ion detection experiments indicated that CDs are very suitable for use as nanoprobes for Fe 3 + ion detection, and the lowest detection limit for Fe 3 + is 0.239 μM, which is superior to many other research studies. This rapid and simple synthesis method will not only aid the development of the quantum dots industrialization but also provide a powerful and portable tool for the rapid and continuous online synthesis of quantum dots supporting their application in cell imaging and safety detection.

In this study, an electrochemical-assisted ferric ion/persulfate (EC/Fe3+/PS) process was proposed to degrade bezafibrate (BZF), a widespread hypolipidemic drug, in water. By promoting the reduction of Fe3+to Fe2+at the cathode, the introduction of an electric field successfully overcomes the limitation of non-regenerable Fe2+inherent in Fe2+/PS systems, significantly improving the degradation efficiency of BZF. The predominant reactive species identified were •OH and SO4●−, with1O2also playing a role. Various key operational parameters were investigated and optimized, including the current intensity, Fe3+dosage, PS concentration, and initial pH. With a current intensity of 50 mA, an Fe3+concentration of 50 μΜ, a PS dosage of 50 μM, and an initial pH of 3, the degradation efficiency of BZF demonstrated an exceptional achievement, reaching up to 98.8% within 30 min. The influence of anions and humic acid was also assessed. An LC/TOF/MS analysis revealed four major degradation pathways of BZF: hydroxylation, amino bond cleavage, dechlorination, and fibrate chain removal. The acute and chronic toxicities of BZF and its degradation intermediates were then assessed using the ECOSAR program. These findings highlight the wide-ranging applications of the EC/Fe3+/PS system and its potential for remediating water contaminated with micropollutants.

Nanocomposites incorporating carbon dots (CDs) and polymers have gained significant attention for various applications, including heavy metal ion detection. This study presents a novel composite that integrates CDs with amphiphilic polyurethane (PU) for enhanced fluorescence detection and absorption of Fe³⁺ ions in wastewater. The resulting nanocomposites exhibit superior mechanical stability, high sensitivity, and selectivity for Fe³⁺, with a remarkable 10 3 -fold enhancement in the limit of detection (LOD) for Fe³⁺ (from 0.38 µM to 0.98 nM) compared to CDs in solution. This enhancement is attributed to the interaction between the functional groups on the CDs and the polyethylene glycol segments of the PU matrix, leading to a red shift in fluorescence emission and improved stability. Additionally, the composite hydrogels show a 4.2-fold increase in Fe³⁺ absorption capacity compared to pure PU, due to the formation of stable complexes between the CDs and Fe³⁺ ions. Mechanistic insights into the absorption process are discussed using various modeling approaches. This hybrid fluorescent hydrogel platform presents a portable, cost-effective solution for Fe³⁺ detection and absorption in wastewater, with potential applications in bio-imaging, light-emitting diodes, and anti-counterfeiting.

Wastewater from mineral processing plants is often treated, recovered, and recycled. The high concentration of iron ions in the recycled water affects the flotation of chalcopyrite. Therefore, studying the impact of introducing Fe 3+ in different collector systems on the flotation behavior of chalcopyrite has guided in realizing its efficient recovery. The results show that both collectors can effectively promote flotation recovery. When the Fe 3+ concentration exceeds 40 mg/L, the flotation recovery decreases significantly. Surface property analysis shows that kerosene and Z-200 act on the surface of chalcopyrite through physical adsorption and chemical adsorption, respectively. The hydroxyl iron formed after introducing Fe 3+ is the crucial reason the surface hydrophobicity decreases and potential increases. DFT calculation results further demonstrate that Z-200 can form stable Cu-S bonds with Cu sites on the surface of chalcopyrite. –OH and Fe in the hydroxyl iron (Fe(OH) 2 + and Fe(OH) 3 ) generated after the introduction of Fe 3+ can bond with Cu and S on the mineral surface, respectively. Because hydroxyl iron competes with the collector for adsorption, preferentially adsorbed on the surface of chalcopyrite reduced the flotation recovery. The results of this study provide theoretical support for reducing the impact of iron ions on chalcopyrite flotation.

Developing a facile preparation method to construct separable and recyclable Fenton-like catalysts holds great significance in the field of environmental remediation. Herein, a rapid dopamine (DA) polymerization strategy to modify melamine foam (MF) was proposed for the construction of bulk foam catalytic materials, which was further utilized for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation to degrade organic pollutants. Taking advantage of the chelation between dopamine's catechol group and Fe3+, as well as the oxidative environment provided by H2O2, DA could encapsulate and polymerize on the surface of MF within 2 h to obtain the MF@Fe@PDA catalyst. Detailed experimental results demonstrated that MF@Fe@PDA could efficiently activate PMS to achieve almost 100% removal of bisphenol A (BPA) in 20 min, and the corresponding turnover frequency (TOF) value was one order of magnitude higher than that of the homogeneous (Fe2+, Fe3+) and nanoparticle (Fe0) catalysts. The high activity of the MF@Fe@PDA/PMS system stemmed from the Fe sites and carbonyl group (CO), which could induce the activation of PMS for the rapid generation of singlet oxygen (1O2), sulfate radical (SO4˙−) and hydroxyl radicals (˙OH). Meanwhile, the coexisting bicarbonate ions (HCO3−) in the MF@Fe@PDA/PMS system could enhance the generation of 1O2, thereby accelerating the degradation of BPA. Moreover, a flow-through system assisted by the bulk MF@Fe@PDA catalyst was constructed for organic pollutant degradation. Overall, these findings may open up new possibilities for developing highly efficient catalysts for wastewater remediation.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous hybrid materials made of metal and organic linkers. Combining MOFs with polymers enhances their performance and addresses the issue of low stability. In this study, a uniform nanoscale Eu(III)-based metal-organic framework (Eu-MOF) was synthesized and grown in situ on TEMPO(2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinyl-1-oxide)-oxidized cellulose nanofibrils (TOCNF), resulting in the formation of Eu-MOF@TOCNF fluorescence films through vacuum filtration. These films exhibited favorable mechanical properties, high transmittance, and stable fluorescence characteristics within the pH range of 3–11. The film produced the characteristic emission peak of Eu 3+ , recognized the selective quenching of Fe 3+ within 0–100μM, and displayed an inverse relationship between fluorescence intensity at 616 nm and Fe 3+ concentration. This approach holds significant promise for Fe 3+ detection in solutions and offers a novel strategy for developing highly efficient optical sensors based on fluorescence specificity.
