Defect sites in heterostructures play a vital role in optimizing interfacial charge separation efficiency and carrier migration behavior, which enhance surface reaction dynamics. However, the effect of defect sites on modulation of electronic structure and oxygen activation is still ambiguous. Herein, we successfully construct in-plane ZnIn 2 S 4 /In 2 O 3 heterostructures by partial in-situ oxidation strategy and the surface properties can be precisely tuned by treating at individual temperatures. Notably, the in-plane ZnIn 2 S 4 /In 2 O 3 heterostructure which is treated in air at 425 °C exhibits outstanding sensing performance towards acetoin (R a /R g = 248.6 for 50 ppm acetoin at 180 °C), a biomarker of Listeria monocytogenes, with rapid response and recovery dynamic (18/183 s), along with excellent reliability and sensing stability. Detailed characterization and DFT calculation indicate that in-plane heterostructures possess numerous grain boundaries, thereby modulating the p-orbitals electronic structure of oxygen atom and promoting the formation of reactive oxygen species (O − (ad)). Moreover, the built-in electric field further also facilitates the electron transfer, further contributing to the enhanced sensing performance for 3-hydroxy-2-butanone.

High-performance gas sensors can be used to detect low-concentration volatile organic compounds (VOCs), toxic and explosive gases in the atmospheric environment, which is of great significance to environmental protection and human health. In this paper, In 2 O 3 @HCNFs gas sensing material with core-shell structure was successfully synthesized by coaxial electrospinning method , and a new room temperature O 3 sensor was developed with potassium ferrite superionic conductor (K 2 Fe 4 O 7 ) as solid electrolyte. The response test shows that the K 2 Fe 4 O 7 -In 2 O 3 @HCNFs sensor has the highest response value and the shortest response/recovery time for 180–420 ppb O 3 . The logarithmic fitting of the response value and the O 3 concentration shows that the sensor has a stronger sensitivity to O 3 . In addition, the K 2 Fe 4 O 7 -In 2 O 3 @HCNFs sensor has good repeatability and stability for O 3 . In the high humidity environment (90 %RH), the sensor still has a certain response value to O 3 , which proves the feasibility of the sensor under high humidity conditions. Additionally, the sensor has good selectivity for O 3 in the presence of other interfering substances. The excellent performance of K 2 Fe 4 O 7 -In 2 O 3 @HCNFs sensor was verified by analyzing the structural composition of gas sensing materials and the detection mechanism of the sensor. Therefore, compared with the traditional uniaxial electrospinning, the In 2 O 3 @HCNFs composite synthesized by coaxial electrospinning has excellent gas sensing properties, and the solid electrolyte gas sensor prepared by it has a good application prospect in the detection of ppb-level O 3 .

High-performance sensors for toxic gases have been the goal of research in the industry. In this study, In 2 O 3 nanorods were grown on ceramic tubes using a hydrothermal method, and a series of gradient annealing temperatures were set to obtain different samples through annealing in air atmosphere. Among them, In 2 O 3 annealed at 400 °C (In 2 O 3 -400) showed the highest oxygen vacancies and chemical adsorbed oxygen ratio. The gas sensing performance test demonstrated that In 2 O 3 -400 exhibited excellent sensitivity to NO 2 at room temperature, its response was 4.58 at 500 ppb and 146.58 at 50 ppm. Density functional theory (DFT) analysis was used to study the adsorption mechanism of nitrogen dioxide on pure In 2 O 3 and In 2 O 3 with V O materials, showing that the existence of oxygen vacancies enhanced the adsorption capacity of In 2 O 3 for NO 2 , and the DFT calculation results were in accordance with the experimental data. This study determined the optimal annealing process conditions, providing theoretical and experimental support for the development of high-performance room-temperature In 2 O 3 -based NO 2 gas sensing devices.

The selective cleavage of C α –C β bonds is of great significance to lignin valorization, and photocatalysis offers an eco-friendly pathway to achieve this process. Here, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) modified with hollow tubular In 2 O 3 was constructed via the calcination method for the photocatalytic cleavage of lignin C α –C β bonds. MIL-68(In) was used as the precursor of In 2 O 3 , imparting a unique hollow tubular structure and a relatively large specific surface area. The hollow tubular structure is helpful for light penetration and scattering, as well as rapid migration of the lignin substrate. The Z-scheme g-C 3 N 4 /In 2 O 3 heterojunction exhibited 92.1% conversion (corresponding benzaldehyde yield: 82.4%) of the lignin model compound 2-phenoxy-1-phenylethanol (PP-ol), outperforming pure In 2 O 3 and g-C 3 N 4 by 40- and 2.3-fold, respectively, under 395 nm light illumination. By varying the illumination wavelength, the conversion and yields of the g-C 3 N 4 /In 2 O 3 composites were found to follow wavelength-dependent reactivities. Additionally, photogenerated holes are capable of converting PP-ol into benzoic acid, whereas 1 O 2 mainly converts PP-ol into benzaldehyde. This work could encourage the application of metal-organic frameworks in biomass conversion and provide insight into photocatalytic lignin valorization.

Tetracycline (TC) is difficult to degrade and is widely used, seriously threatening the environment and human health. This paper employed the two-step hydrothermal synthesis process to combine the different loading of urchin-like In 2 O 3 with laminar g-C 3 N 4 . After a series of experiments, it was proved that the 10.0 wt.% In 2 O 3 /g-C 3 N 4 is the optimal ratio. Its decompose efficiency of TC could reach 86.1%, and the apparent rate constant of degradation was 0.01655 min −1 simultaneously. This result is attributed to the S-scheme heterojunction structure within the In 2 O 3 /g-C 3 N 4 composite material. Through this mechanism, useless electrons and holes were eliminated via recombination, while the highly reactive photogenerated electrons in the g-C 3 N 4 ’s CB and the holes in the In 2 O 3 ’s VB were reserved for photocatalytic reactions and generated a substantial quantity of reactive species (RSs) that effectively degraded TC. This work provides several useful insights for removing TC or other organic pollutants from the water environment.

Morphology control significantly improves the microstructure, increases the number of defects, tailors porosity, and optimizes the band gap of gas-sensing materials, profoundly affecting the adsorption and desorption capabilities for gas molecules. Herein, we prepared In(OH) 3 precursors via a hydrothermal method and rationally controlled the microstructure of In 2 O 3 by varying annealing temperatures (400°C, 500°C, 600°C). Characterizations revealed that the porous cubic In 2 O 3 -500 (500°C) exhibited superior properties, including more balanced grain size and crystallinity, superior pore structure, more oxygen vacancies and adsorbed oxygen, and a narrower band gap compared to the surface-dense cubic In 2 O 3 -400 (400°C) and the porous spherical In 2 O 3 -600 (600°C). Gas-sensing tests demonstrated that three sensors displayed exceptional selectivity towards formaldehyde (HCHO), with rapid response times (1 s) to 100 ppm HCHO. Notably, In 2 O 3 -500, operating at a lower temperature (175°C), achieved the highest response (R a /R g = 200), good humidity resistance, and the lowest detection limit (30 ppb). The gas-sensing performance at 60 RH% showed that In 2 O 3 -500 still exhibited the highest response (161) to 100 ppm HCHO at 175℃, a decrease of less than 20 %. This study offers insights into the cost-effective and facile fabrication of high-performance HCHO gas sensors based on In 2 O 3 materials.

In complex practical environments, gas sensors with exceptional anti-interference capabilities are highly desirable. Nevertheless, developing metal oxide-based NO 2 gas sensors that maintain excellent humidity resistance at relatively low temperatures remains a significant challenge. In this work, Metal-organic framework-derived In 2 O 3 @MoS 2 heterojunctions were successfully fabricated, which demonstrate remarkable NO 2 sensing performance characterized by low operating temperature, high selectivity, and outstanding humidity tolerance. Significantly, at near room temperature, the sensor demonstrates negligible response fluctuation of only 1.03 % to 10 ppm NO 2 across a wide relative humidity (RH) range of 15 %-85 %. Even at 65 % RH conditions, it still achieves a low detection limitation of 50 ppb. Further analysis reveals that edge-terminated unsaturated sulfur (S) atoms are the key factor for the enhanced sensing performance. Both porous strueture and enhanced charge transfer are also conducive to the enhancement. These findings highlight the potential of In 2 O 3 @MoS 2 -based gas sensor as promising candidates for reliable NO 2 detection in high-humidity environments.

In2O3(ZnO)k natural superlattices (where k is an integer), consisting of relatively earth abundant and non-toxic elements with coarsening-resistant nanostructures, are environmentally friendly materials with the potential for high temperature thermoelectric applications. Herein, we report our investigation of the high temperature thermoelectric properties of the In2O3(ZnO)4 superlattice bulk polycrystals that were singly and dually doped with Al and Ce. Transport property measurements revealed that Al and Ce did not only enter the ZnO blocks but also modified the InO2 single atomic layers. The effective electron potential barrier height of the superlattice interfaces can be adjusted by doping, and the optimal value that maximizes the power factor is of the order of kBT above the Fermi level. The interfacial thermal (Kapitza) resistance of the InO2 atomic sheets dramatically increased with doping, primarily accounting for the bulk thermal conductivity reduction. At the optimal crossing of the interfacial thermal resistance and the effective potential barrier height, a maximum ZT of ≈0.22 was achieved at 800 °C in the 1.6 mol% Al-doped superlattice, which was an enhancement of ∼200% over the pristine In2O3(ZnO)4. This work provides a new perspective on enhancing the high temperature thermoelectric performance of nanostructured oxides by synergistically optimizing the interfacial phonon and electron transport properties.

For the rapid and accurate detection of trimethylamine (TMA) hazardous gases, a metal organic framework (MOF) derived bayberry-like In 2 O 3 architectures gas sensor was successfully prepared by a rapid and facile hydrothermal synthesis (30 min) and subsequent precise annealing process. The gas sensitivity test results show that the MOF-derived bayberry-like In 2 O 3 sensor has a low operating temperature of 120 °C, a response value of 23.2 to 20 ppm trimethylamine, a fast response speed of 1.4 s, and good selectivity and stability. In addition, the gas-sensing mechanism of the sample is discussed. It is considered that the unique MOF-derived bayberry-like architectures and the abundance of oxygen vacancies are the main reasons for its excellent gas-sensing performance. A possible growth mechanism is proposed by observing the morphological evolution of the samples at different stages. With excellent gas sensitivity, the MOF-derived bayberry-like In 2 O 3 architectures sensor will be an outstanding candidate for TMA gas detection application, seafood freshness detection, and renal disease detection.

rGO-modified indium oxide (In2O3) anchored PdPbAg nanoalloy composites (PdPbAg@rGO/In2O3) were prepared by a facile hydrothermal, annealing and reduction method. Electrochemical tests showed that the as-prepared trimetallic catalyst exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity and high resistance to CO poisoning compared with commercial Pd/C, mono-Pd and different bimetallic catalysts. Specifically, PdPbAg@rGO/In2O3 has the highest forward peak current density of 213.89 mA cm−2, which is 7.89 times that of Pd/C (27.07 mA cm−2). After 3600 s chronoamperometry (CA) test, the retained current density of PdPbAg@rGO/In2O3 reaches 78.15% of the initial value. Its excellent electrocatalytic oxidation performance is attributed to the support with large specific surface area and the strong synergistic effect of PdPbAg nanoalloys, which provide a large number of interfaces and achievable reactive sites. In addition, the introduction of rGO into the In2O3 matrix contributes to its excellent electron transfer and large specific surface area, which is beneficial to improving the catalytic ability of the catalyst. The study of this novel composite material provides a conceptual and applicable route for the development of advanced high electrochemical performance Pd-based electrocatalysts for direct ethylene glycol fuel cells.

Exploitation of atomic-level principles to optimize the charge transfer on ultrathin 2D heterostructures is an emerging frontier in relieving the energy and environmental crisis. Herein, a facile “topological-atom-extraction” protocol is disclosed, i.e., selective extraction of Zn from ultrathin half-unit-cell ZnIn 2 S 4 (HZIS) can embed thin In 2 O 3 domain into 1.60 nm thick HZIS layer to create an atomically thin in-plane In 2 O 3 /HZIS heterostructure. Thanks to the optimal distance and capability of charge separation, the in-plane In 2 O 3 /HZIS heterostructure is among the best ZnIn 2 S 4 -based CO 2 reduction reaction (CRR) photocatalysts, and indeed demonstrates a significant increase (from 6.8- to 128-fold) in CO production rate compared with those of out-plane ZIS@In 2 O 3 and out-plane In 2 O 3 -HZIS calcined heterostructures. Density Functional Theory simulation reveals that whereas the out-plane heterostructure has a much smaller ∆q of 0.2–0.25 e, the in-plane heterostructure with “zero distance contact” has an optimal ∆q of 1.05 e between In 2 O 3 and HZIS that induces remarkable charge redistribution on the in-plane heterojunction interface and creates local electric field confined within the ultrathin layer. The charge redistribution efficiently directs the charge-carrier separation in S-scheme photocatalytic system and endows long-lifetime carrier to CRR active HZIS. The findings demonstrate the strong versatility of engineering atomic-level heterojunctions for efficient catalysts design.

A novel In 2 O 3 /AgI heterojunction, which has a hollow tubular structure with AgI particles distributed evenly on the outer and inner surfaces of In 2 O 3 microtubes, was fabricated from annealing of AgI adhered to MIL-68(In). The as-prepared heterojunction exhibited much higher photocatalytic activity towards tetracycline degradation compared to In 2 O 3 and AgI. The presence of InAg-1 (1.0 g/L), which has a In 2 O 3 :AgI mole ratio of 2:1, could achieve 98.4% removal of tetracycline (20 mg/L) from the solution phase under visible light illumination in 10 min, and it had excellent reusability and stability. The In 2 O 3 /AgI heterojunction also exhibited excellent performance in photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline in different types of water matrices and under natural sunlight illumination, demonstrating its potential in practical application. The superior photocatalytic activity of InAg-1 is attributed to the heterojunction formation and generation of oxygen vacancies (OVs), which improve the separation efficiency of photoinduced e − -h + pairs. Meanwhile, the built-in electric field (BIEF) formed with e - flowing from AgI to In 2 O 3 , which is confirmed by density functional theory calculations, helps the formation of a Z-scheme, instead of type II, heterojunction between In 2 O 3 and AgI. Results of radical trapping experiments and electron spin resonance spectra reveal that 1 O 2 , h + , •O 2 − , and •OH were the key reactive species involved in the photocatalytic degradation process. These findings indicate that Z-scheme photocatalysts with OVs could efficiently activate molecular oxygen and thus have excellent photocatalytic activity towards degradation of organic pollutants.
