The main bottleneck in the application of biomass-based carbon material in energy field is the development of an economical, nanoscale controllable and universal fabrication method . Herein, we demonstrate that a biomass-derived carbon consisting of loose carbon nanosphere clusters could serve as an ideal cathode material for high performance Li-O 2 batteries . The carbon nanomaterial can be prepared from both biomass derivatives and crude biomass by a low cost, facile and nanoscale controllable method. The open slit-shaped hierarchical pore structure endows the electrode sufficient active surface sites and mass transport channels that are not easily asphyxiated by the discharge products. The concentration of oxygenic groups and structure defects on the surface of obtained carbon materials is very low, which minimizes the side reactions associated with carbon decomposition. The unique pore structure and surface properties of the carbon electrode give rise to a superhigh specific capacity of 20,300 mA h g −1 and an extremely long cycle life which a cyclic capacity retention of 100% is maintained for 543 cycles with current density of 0.2 mA cm −2 at controlled discharge-charge depths of 500 mA h g −1 .

The wide application of lithium batteries in consumer electronics and electric vehicles bring about ever-rising demand of lithium resources globally. Nanofiltration (NF) membranes with high Mg 2+ /Li + selectivity could achieve highly efficient separation of lithium from natural brines, which provides a good alternative for steady lithium supply. In this work, we developed a dual-skin layer nanofiltration membrane comprised of a polyethylene-imine (PEI) layer grafted on a polyamide layer. The polyamide layer was prepared via interfacial polymerization to endow the NF membrane with sub-nm pores, while the PEI layer was grafted on the polyamide surface via amidation reaction to further equip the membrane with enhanced positive charge. With the synergistic effect of size sieving from the polyamide layer and electrostatic exclusion from the PEI layer, the dual-skin layer NF membrane exhibits a high rejection of 98.5% to MgCl 2 and a low rejection of 46.2% to LiCl, suggesting a high Mg 2+ /Li + selectivity. As using this dual-skin layer NF membrane for separating Li + from a simulated brine, a high Mg 2+ /Li + separation factor (S Mg , Li ) up to 33.4 was achieved, which is the highest value among the pressure-driven polymeric nanofiltration membranes reported so far.

Mechanoluminescent materials that could convert mechanical energy into light energy have attracted increasing attention in recent years for their wide potential applications in stress sensing and imaging, structural damage monitoring, wearable illuminating devices, self-powered display, mechanical energy collection and conversion. However, their relatively low mechanoluminescence intensity greatly hinders the practical application. Here, we present a simple and effective strategy to enhance the mechanoluminescence performance of ZnS :Mn phosphor by Li ion co-doping. ZnS:Mn,Li phosphors of the hexagonal wurtzite structure have been prepared via high temperature solid phase sintering . The PL and ML intensity have been enhanced by 338% and 610% for samples obtained when 4 and 5 at. % Li is introduced in the precursor materials, respectively, in comparison with those without Li dopant . The photoluminescence lifetime of ZnS:Mn,Li decreases gradually, indicating the enhanced non-radiative energy transfer as the Li concentration increases. The electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy is carried out to investigate the changing tendency of the sulfur vacancy of samples with various Li-doping concentration. The mechanism for mechanoluminescence enhancement is supposed to be correlated with the increased sulfur vacancies by Li co-doping, which may facilitates the non-radiative energy transfer and thereby improve the luminescence properties of the samples. These findings provide a feasible strategy to enhance the mechanoluminescence performance of traditional ZnS derived phosphors, and may contribute to developing novel mechanoluminescence materials for practical applications.

Tetraborate pillared Li–Al layered double hydroxide was synthesized for the first time by a mechano-hydrothermal process in which gibbsite (Al(OH) 3 ) sample was first activated by a ball milling, followed by hydrothermal treatment with Li 2 B 4 O 7 in water at 95°C. Activation of gibbsite Al(OH) 3 induced by mechanochemical process was essential for the formation of thin disk-like Li–Al LDH intercalated with borate anion. When in excess the activated Al(OH) 3 was transformed into bayerite phase during the hydrothermal process.

W-doped Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 electrolytes with composition of Li 7-2x La 3 Zr 2-x W x O 12 (LLZWO, x = 0-0.55) were prepared by conventional solid state reaction. The incorporation of W proves beneficial to stabilization of cubic phase and densification of the ceramic, resulting in relative density of 96% and ionic conductivity of 6.6 × 10 −4 S cm −1 at 25 °C. Further analysis indicates that the LLZWO is not only chemically but also electrochemically (at least up to 4.5 V) stable against Li metal anodes. The batteries consisting of Li/LLZWO/Electrolyte-soaked separator/LiNi 0.33 Mn 0.33 Co 0.33 O 2 at 25 °C exhibit the capacity of 142 mAh g −1 at a constant current of 15 mA g −1 at the first discharge, which could run for 20 cycles with capacity retention of 94%. These results indicate that the W-doped LLZO ceramics are promising electrolytes for solid state lithium ion batteries.

Hollow ordered porous carbon spheres (HOPCS) with a hierarchical structure were prepared by templating with hollow ordered mesoporous silica spheres (HOMSS). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed that HOPCS exhibited a spherical hollow morphology. High-resolution TEM, small angle X-ray diffraction (SAXRD) and N 2 sorption measurements confirmed that HOPCS inversely replicated the unconnected hexagonal-stacked pore structure of HOMSS, and possessed ordered porosity. HOPCS exhibited a higher storage capacity for Li + ion battery (LIB) of 527.6 mA h/g, and good cycling performance. A large capacity loss during the first discharge–charge cycle was found attributed to the high content of micropores. The cycling performance was derived from the hierarchical structure.

Li-doped MgO nanoplates were prepared by a sol–gel technique using magnesium nitrate hexahydrate and lithium nitrate as starting materials. The structures and morphologies of the as-obtained products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The influence of lithium doping on the antibacterial properties of nano-MgO was also investigated by the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) test and bactericidal efficacy against Escherichia coli ( E. coli , ATCC 25922). It can be concluded that an appropriate amount of lithium doping can significantly enhance the antibacterial activity of nano-MgO, which can be attributed to an increase of defect concentration (oxygen vacancy) and basicity of nano-MgO, in favor of the generation and stabilization of active oxygen in MgO solution.

Ba(1-2x)LixAlxTiO3 (x = 0, 0.5, 1.5 and 2.5 mol%) ceramics were prepared by a conventional sintering method. The effects of Li+ and Al3+ content on the crystalline structure, dielectric and piezoelectric properties of BT ceramic were investigated. A better incorporation of Li+ and Al3+ ions recently occurs in our system without any impurity at x≤1.5 mol%. Ba(1-2x)LixAlxTiO3 ceramic can generate a large piezoelectric constant of d33 = 276 pC/N at x = 1.5 mol%. According to the dielectric properties results, the high piezoelectricity is possible from the suppressed energy barrier of second-like order transition induced by the incorporation of Li+ and Al3+ ions.

In this study, we introduced a solvent-free mechanochemical route to synthesize Li–Al layered double hydroxide through a two-step grinding of LiOH and Al(OH) 3 , in which the mixture powder with Li/Al molar ratio at 1/2 was first dry ground for 2 h and then wet ground for another 1 h with water addition without any heating operation. The as-prepared samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetry (TG), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The products possessed highly crystalline of Li–Al LDH phase with no evident impure phases, presenting an easy and effective preparation of Li–Al LDH by using solvent-free mechanochemical approach.

Ionogel electrolytes based on gel scaffolds and ionic liquids (ILs) have garnered widespread attention for their processing compatibility, non-flammability, and exceptional thermal/electrochemical properties. While there have been many studies demonstrating the effectiveness of the bisalt approach in stabilizing lithium metal anode , the precise impact of skeleton-constrained dual-anion ionogels on interface modulation remains somewhat obscured and deserves further attention. Herein, we formulate a Li 6.4 La 3 Zr 1.4 Ta 0.6 O 12 (LLZTO)-incorporated dual-anion ionogel to reveal the solvation chemistry in the presence of LLZTO and detail the Li + transport mechanism and effect on the interfacial chemistries of Li-metal. The impact of inorganic substances on the solvation structure in IL-based solid electrolytes and their role in forming the SEI layer on lithium metal was unveiled. To be specific, the introduction of fillers exert a selective modulating influence on the anions species in the Li + -solvated shell and fine-tunes the local Li + environment, thereby fostering a more robust interfacial layer. Modified ion environment in ionogels enables a preferable shift from vehicular to structural Li + transport, whereby a high Li ion conductivity (1.24×10 −3 S/cm) and high Li ion transference number of 0.42 is achieved. The synergistic solvent coordination and adjustment of the electrode-electrolyte interface enable the LiFePO 4 |PIL-10|Li cells to cycle steadily with capacity retention of 95.4 % after 500 cycles at 1C and 25 °C. The strategy of promoting transport mechanisms holds promise for designing the next-generation solid-state lithium metal batteries with high energy density .

The discovery of Nb-W-O materials years ago marks the milestone of charging a lithium-ion battery in minutes. Nevertheless, for many applications, charging lithium-ion battery within one minute is urgently demanded, the bottleneck of which largely lies in the lack of fundamental understanding of Li + storage mechanisms in these materials. Herein, by visualizing Li + intercalated into representative Nb 16 W 5 O 55 , we find that the fast-charging nature of such material originates from an interesting rate-dependent lattice relaxation process associated with the Jahn-Teller effect. Furthermore, in situ electron microscopy further reveals a directional, [010]-preferred Li + transport mechanism in Nb 16 W 5 O 55 crystals being the “bottleneck” toward fast charging that deprives the entry of any desolvated Li + through the prevailing non-(010) surfaces. Hence, we propose a machine learning-assisted interface engineering strategy to swiftly collect desolvated Li + and relocate them to (010) surfaces for their fast intercalation. As a result, a capacity of ≈ 116 mAh g −1 (68.5% of the theoretical capacity) at 80 C (45 s) is achieved when coupled with a Li negative electrode.

A novel polymer electrolyte based on CsPbI 3 quantum dots (QDs) reinforced polyacrylonitrile (PAN), named as PIL, is exploited to address the low room-temperature (RT) ion conductivity and poor interfacial compatibility of polymer solid-state electrolytes. After optimizing the content of CsPbI 3 QDs, RT ion conductivity of PIL largely increased from 0.077 to 0.56 mS cm −1 , and its Li-ion transference number ( τ L i + ${{\tau }_{{\mathrm{L}}{{{\mathrm{i}}}^ + }}}$ ) from 0.20 to 0.63. It is revealed that the synergistic enhancement of Li-ion transport and interface stability is realized by CsPbI 3 QDs through Lewis acid–base interaction, ordered polarization of PAN, and interface chemical regulation. These two effects guarantee the robust solid-electrolyte interface (SEI) in PIL-based solid-state batteries. Consequently, PIL electrolyte enables solid-state Li-metal batteries to deliver extraordinary RT cycling performance as verified by excellent cycling stability (>2000 h at 0.1 mA cm −2 ) of Li|PIL|Li symmetric batteries. Moreover, Li|PIL|LFP (LFP is LiFePO 4 ) and Li|PIL|NCM811 (NCM811 is Li(Ni 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 )O 2 ) batteries maintain capacity retention of 81.2% and 77.9%, respectively, after 600 cycles at 0.5 C, as well as good rate-capability and very high Coulombic efficiency at RT.
