High-sensitivity and high-specificity optical fiber SPR doxorubicin sensor enabled by Ti3C2 MXene sensitization

Like Li,Yi Li,Guohong Zou,Lu Cai,Maoqing Chen,Xiaoming Chen,Bo Han,Ya-nan Zhang,Yong Zhao

Doxorubicin, as an anthracycline antibiotic, is a commonly used and effective chemotherapeutic agent for treating various malignancies. However, it has a narrow therapeutic window. Therefore, real-time monitoring of doxorubicin concentration in chemotherapy patients is essential for enhancing treatment efficacy, minimizing side effects, and ensuring patient safety. In this paper, we proposed a Ti 3 C 2 MXene-sensitized fiber surface plasmon resonance (SPR) doxorubicin sensor. By covalently functionalizing the reflective SPR sensing structure with Ti 3 C 2 MXene, the refractive index sensitivity increased by 60.0 %. Furthermore, by covalently modifying the doxorubicin-specific aptamer, the sensor achieves high sensitivity and high specificity in the detection of doxorubicin. Within the linear range of 10–100 μM, it demonstrates a sensitivity of 0.24 nm/μM and a limit of detection of 2.79 μM. Furthermore, experiments confirmed that the doxorubicin sensor exhibits excellent specificity and can be applied for the detection of doxorubicin in real serum samples. The proposed doxorubicin sensor offers benefits such as high sensitivity, high specificity, fast response, and small size, and has the potential to meet the clinical requirements for monitoring doxorubicin concentration in chemotherapy patients.

Oxidation-resistant, stable and flexible Ti3C2Tx MXene/Polyimide composites for high-performance electromagnetic interference shielding and thermal management

Ziheng Ye,Feihua Liu,Xiaoai Ye,Kaizheng Gao,Jingjing Luo,Xiangli Liu,Weiwei Zhao

Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene with outstanding physicochemical properties have shown huge potential in electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding applications. However, the poor chemical stability and mechanical fragility have seriously hindered their practical use. Herein, we developed a novel pyrimidine-containing polyimide (PPI) and constructed Ti 3 C 2 T x /PPI (MP) composite films . The incorporation of PPI not only suppresses the oxidation of Ti 3 C 2 T x by forming Ti-N x interactions between the nitrogen-rich pyrimidine rings of PPI and the Ti centers of Ti 3 C 2 T x , but also enhances mechanical strength and durability of the composite film across a wide temperature range (-196–250 ℃). Compared with Ti 3 C 2 T x film, the MP film exhibits significantly improved oxidation resistance , which the EMI SE of MP film did not decrease after 14 days in 80 ℃/80 RH environment when the weight ratio of Ti 3 C 2 T x and PPI reaches 11:4. Merely 1.4 dB decrease in EMI SE of the MP film was revealed after 200,000 bending cycles with a radius of 2 mm, and the EMI SE remained virtually unchanged after bending in liquid N 2 . Moreover, the composite film demonstrates excellent thermal management properties, including rapid thermal response, efficient electrothermal conversion, excellent durability and stability. The combination of desirable EMI shielding ability, ultrahigh flexibility, superior stability and durability, as well as ideal thermal management performance gives this material excellent potential for various applications.

Construction of ionic liquid functionalized MXene with extremely high adsorption capacity towards iodine via the combination of mussel-inspired chemistry and Michael addition reaction

Shiyan Sun,Xuefeng Sha,Jie Liang,Guang Yang,Xin Hu,Yuanqing Wen,Meiying Liu,Naigen Zhou,Xiaoyong Zhang,Yen Wei

In this work, a highly efficient adsorbent based on ionic liquid functionalized MXene has been fabricated through the combination of mussel-inspired chemistry and Michael addition reaction. The surface of MXene was first coated with polydopamine (PDA) through self-polymerization of dopamine and the amino groups were introduced on the surface of MXene simultaneously. After that, the ene bond-containing ionic liquid was further immobilized on the surface of MXene-PDA to obtain MXene-PDA-IL. As a concept, the adsorptive removal of iodine using MXene-PDA-IL was conducted and the effects of various factors on the adsorption behavior were examined. The experimental data were analyzed by intermittent adsorption experiments, the adsorption kinetics, adsorption isotherm, adsorption thermodynamics, and cyclic adsorption experiments. We found that the adsorption procedure could reach equilibrium within 10 min after mixing adsorbent and iodine. The maximum adsorption capacity of MXene-PDA-IL towards iodine was as high as 695.4 mg g −1 , which is greater than most of reported adsorbents. Considered the advantages of mussel-inspired chemistry for surface functionalization and the adsorption capacity of ionic liquids, the method could be used for construct a number of composites with potential for adsorption applications.

Fire/heat-resistant, anti-corrosion and folding Ti2C3Tx MXene/single-walled carbon nanotube films for extreme-environmental EMI shielding and solar-thermal conversion applications

Bing Zhou,Yanli Li,Zhaoyang Li,Jianmin Ma,Keqing Zhou,Chuntai Liu,Changyu Shen,Yuezhan Feng

Polymer-based nacre-like conductive films used in highly efficient electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding and solar-thermal conversion are often limited by poor fire/heat resistance and unsatisfactory electrical conductivity, which would tremendously impede their applications in some extreme environments. As one of the solutions, high aspect ratio one-dimensional (1D) single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with intrinsic electrical conductivity and fire/heat resistance were selected as a matrix to prepare a high-performance lamellar film with two-dimensional (2D) Ti2C3Tx MXene by vacuum-assisted filtration in this work. The lamellar structure with highly oriented MXene nanosheets and interconnecting conductive SWNT networks not only ensures a high electrical conductivity (1851.9 S cm−1) of the composite film, but also provides the space for multiple internal reflection of EM waves, thus resulting in a super-high EMI shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) of 78.9 dB and a high specific shielding effectiveness (SSE/t) of 15263.1 dB cm2 g−1. Further increasing the film thickness to 296 μm can improve the EMI SE to 108.1 dB. More significantly, the MXene/CNT film can maintain a long-term stable EMI shielding performance and structural integrity in various extreme environments including fire, high/low-temperature (−196 to 500 °C), folding deformation, ultrasound, and acid-based corrosion. Besides, the lamellar structure with high interfacial adhesion endows the MXene/CNT film with high tensile strength and toughness, and remarkable flexibility. Simultaneously, the MXene/CNT film shows an outstanding solar-thermal energy conversion ability. Based on these glorious performances, the MXene/CNT film exhibits a huge potential in practical applications to meet various extreme environments.

Fully Physically Cross-Linked, Highly Sensitive, and Nanofiber-Reinforced MXene Conductive Hydrogels for Flexible Wearable Sensors

Yaoyao Xiao,Guoxiao Yin,Jin Zhou,Chengbo Tian,Yingying Li,Min Yu

Conductive hydrogels have great potential as flexible sensors in wearable devices. However, it remains a challenge to integrate excellent mechanical properties, high conductivity, and sensitivity into hydrogels using simple green methods. Here, cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) and MXene were introduced into a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel system based on the multi-scale synergistic enhancement mechanism of nanocomposites. By forming interfacial hydrogen bonds and entanglement of molecular chains, a nanofiber-reinforced PVA/CNF/MXene (PCM) hydrogel was developed. MXene enhances the electrical conductivity of the hydrogel, reaching 0.175 S/m, which represents a 191.7% increase compared to the hydrogel without MXene. The synergistic enhancement between CNF and MXene confers the PCM hydrogel with high mechanical strength (334 kPa) and high stretchability (339%). Moreover, PCM hydrogel serves as a strain sensor with outstanding strain sensitivity (GF = 3.25), wide dynamic detection range (0%–220%), and low detection threshold (0.3%), demonstrating excellent stability and durability in response to stimulus signals. The hydrogel sensor enables accurate detection of subtle human movements and synchronized control of robotic arms, demonstrating its broad applicability in motion monitoring and human–machine interaction (HMI).

In situ synthesis of Ti3C2Tx MXene/CoS nanocomposite as high performance counter electrode materials for quantum dot-sensitized solar cells

Xiaobo Chen,Yefei Zhuang,Qingyu Shen,Xiaoyu Cao,Wen Yang,Peizhi Yang

Low electrocatalytic activity and/or high charge transfer resistance of counter electrodes (CEs) in quantum-dot-sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs) are the main reasons for the low photovoltaic performance . Herein, the CoS nanoparticles are anchored on the MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) via a simple in-situ hydrothermal reaction process. It is the first attempt to use the MXene/CoS as a highly electrocatalytic CE for QDSSCs . The QDSSCs with a MXene/CoS CE shows a significant enhancement in cell performances and yields a promising power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 8.09% compared with that of the QDSSCs with bare CoS (5.77%) and bare MXene (4.25%) CEs. The significant enhancement of PCE value is mainly attributed to the synergistic effects of the unique layered morphology of conductive MXene nanosheets and its cocatalysis with CoS nanoparticles. The coupling of layered MXene with small CoS nanoparticles (~15 nm) provides abundant catalytic active sites. The improved mesoporous morphology contributes a high specific surface area and fast electron transfer channels for S x 2− reduction. Consequently, the MXene/CoS nanocomposite can be utilized as an effective agent to boost up the photovoltaic performance of QDSSCs.

Mechanically superior MXene/PBONF-PSS membrane with adjustable surface charge for ultrahigh osmotic energy harvesting towards extremely complex conditions

Runyu Duan,Xiaoyan Ma,Bohan Ding,Xingrong Zhang,Biao Kong,Jian Liu,Lei Jiang,Chao Teng

Osmotic energy has emerged as a highly promising renewable energy source due to its abundant reserves, environmental sustainability, and widespread availability. While the influences of conventional environmental factors such as temperature and pH on the performance of osmotic energy conversion membranes have been extensively studied, their performance and stability under harsh mechanical conditions, such as ultrasonic vibration, puncture, and stretching, remain poorly understood. To overcome this limitation, we developed innovative MXene/poly( p -phenylene-benzodioxazole) nanofibers (PBONF)-polystyrene sulfonate (PSS) (MXP-PSS) composite membranes by integrating rigid PSS-functionalized PBONF with negatively charged MXene nanosheets using a precisely regulated surface charge modification and interfacial engineering strategy. The resulting membrane exhibits exceptional mechanical properties with a longitudinal tensile strength of 299.27 ± 8.20 MPa and transverse puncture resistance of 1057.65 KPa, which is far superior to that of pure MXene membranes, as corroborated by finite element simulation. More importantly, the membrane demonstrates superior osmotic energy conversion performance, achieving peak power densities of 15.18 W/m 2 and 67.57 W/m 2 under 50-fold and 500-fold salinity gradients, respectively, while maintaining excellent ion selectivity (0.87 and 0.79) . Notably, the membrane retains stable power generation even under extreme conditions including ultrasonic vibration, mechanical stretching, and wide pH ranges , demonstrating unprecedented environmental durability. This work presents a breakthrough in developing highly mechanical, charge-tunable nanofluidic membranes for efficient osmotic energy harvesting in complex environments.

Low-temperature resistant hydrogel with inkjet-printed MXene on microspine surface for pressure sensing and triboelectric energy harvesting

Weijun Jiang,Jingyuan Liu,Hongsen Zhang,Dalei Song,Jing Yu,Qi Liu,Rongrong Chen,Jiahui Zhu,Jun Wang

Wearable, flexible sensors based on hydrogel fabrication have recently gained significant attention due to their unique properties. However, developing hydrogel sensors that maintain high sensitivity and work effectively in sub-zero temperatures remains a formidable challenge. Herein, a hydrogel with surfaces featuring randomly distributed microspines is synthesized by combining sodium alginate (SA) and acrylamide (AM) as the hydrogel components. To fabricate a wearable sensor, a highly conductive MXene layer is inkjet-printed onto the surface of the hydrogel microspines. The resulting sensor exhibits a remarkable array of features, including exceptional sensitivity (15.03 kPa −1 ), a low detection limit (10 Pa), a vast operating range (0.12–70 kPa), rapid response and recovery (40/100 ms), reliable performance (over 1000 cycles), and outstanding resistance to low temperatures (-20 °C). Moreover, this hydrogel-based sensor facilitates the efficient collection of human monitoring data, such as vocal patterns, pulse, and joint movements, even when operating at −20 °C and in ice bath conditions. Importantly, the surface-based inkjet MXene hydrogels could be assembled into a deformable triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), allowing mechanical energy harvesting. The TENG exhibited peak output voltage and current values of 5 V and 2.5 μA, respectively.

MXene nanocomposite nanofiltration membrane for low carbon and long-lasting desalination

Qiang Xue,Kaisong Zhang

Current membranes have limitations in permeability and selectivity, and require long-time stability, which drive the development of high-performance nanofiltration (NF) membranes. MXene is a new type of highly hydrophilic and negatively charged two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets material, especially its supernatant has good dispersibility and stability. The MXene supernatant containing several layers was treated as aqueous solvent for interfacial polymerization, consequently the prepared MXene nanocomposite membrane could maintain high permeselectivity even under low pressures required for low carbon. The characterization results showed that the MXene nanocomposite membrane had better hydrophilicity and higher negative charge. At the same time, the Na 2 SO 4 rejection was increased to 97.6% and the pure water flux was improved by about 1.7 times compared with the pristine membrane. In the BSA antifouling test and 58-day persistent desalination test, the MXene nanocomposite membrane showed the better antifouling property, high rejection and good stability. As an excellent 2D modifier, MXene provided fresh ideas and guidance for low-carbon and persistent NF membranes with excellent separation performance.

Micro-helical Ni3Fe chain encapsulated in ultralight MXene/C aerogel to realize multi-functionality: Radar stealth, thermal insulation, fire resistance, and mechanical properties

Sen Lin,Jing Lin,Zhiqiang Xiong,Xue He,Xin Li,Chongbo Liu,Chengying Wang,Xiaojun Zeng,Xuliang Nie,Renchao Che

Magnetic carbon aerogels with high porosity, ultralow density, and excellent impedance matching are considered to be a promising microwave absorption (MA) material. In this study, ethylene glycol polymerization is used to assemble Ni 3 Fe particles into a micro-helical chain, which is further wrapped by MXene and then encapsulated in poly-Schiff-base aerogels through the carbonyl–amine condensation reaction. Finally, ultralight TiO 2 /Ni 3 Fe/MXene/C (NFMC) aerogels are synthesized through calcination treatment. Benefiting from the electromagnetic synergistic effect of multi-dimensional and multi-component materials, the NFMC-7 aerogel exhibits excellent MA performance with a minimum reflection loss of −61.6 dB at 3.0-mm thickness and an effective absorption bandwidth of 8.16 GHz at 2.77-mm thickness under a low filler loading of 7.6 wt%. Commercial computer simulation technology is used to verify the strong magnetic and dielectric loss characteristics of Ni 3 Fe chains. At the same time, the NFMC-7 aerogel exhibits excellent radar stealth, heat insulation, compression resistance, and fire resistance performance, which verifies its practical applicability. Overall, this work establishes an effective strategy to fabricate multi-functional magnetic aerogels, which can serve as lightweight, thin, and strong microwave absorbers with broad absorption bandwidth.

Asymmetric Ba0.7Sr0.3CoO3-δ/MXene solar evaporators for enhanced treatment of high salinity organic wastewater: Improving salt deposition control and pollutant removal

Haopeng Luo,Mingwei Jiang,Heng Du,Tingyi Weng,Chenyi Yang,Zihan Chen,Fang Jiang,Huan Chen

Solar-driven interfacial evaporation (SIE) utilizes solar thermal energy to produce clean water, addressing the water-energy paradox. However, challenges like photothermal conversion performance and salt deposition limit its adoption. Additionally, when SIE is applied to organic wastewater treatment, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the distilled water can diminish water purification efficiency. In this study, we developed a Ba 0.7 Sr 0.3 CoO 3-δ /MXene composite solar evaporator capable of simultaneous removal of organic matters (93.70 % removal of 4-chlorophenol) with high evaporation performance (1.50 kg m −2  h −1 ) during the evaporation of salt-containing organic wastewater. The incorporation of Ba 0.7 Sr 0.3 CoO 3-δ into the composite significantly enhanced the photothermal conversion capacity, improving the evaporation efficiency. The organic pollutant removal activity of Ba 0.7 Sr 0.3 CoO 3-δ stemmed from lattice oxygen, which was activated by photothermal conversion heat. The incorporation of Ba 0.7 Sr 0.3 CoO 3-δ and MXene in the solar evaporator significantly enhances the photothermal conversion performance. Additionally, the innovative asymmetric edge structure effectively addresses the salt deposition issue and enables the removal of organic pollutants through in situ utilization of heat generated from photothermal conversion. This approach offers a subtle yet effective strategy for mitigating pollutant accumulation in the solar interfacial evaporation process, ensuring long-term water purification and clean water production.

3D interwoven MXene networks fabricated by the assistance of bacterial celluloses as high-performance cathode material for rechargeable magnesium battery

Jinglian Zhu,Rui Shi,Yana Liu,Yunfeng Zhu,Jiguang Zhang,Xiaohui Hu,Liquan Li

3D interwoven Ti 3 C 2 MXene networks fabricated with the assistance of bacterial celluloses (BC) are used as a cathode material for rechargeable magnesium ion battery, which delivers an impressive specific capacity (171 mA h g −1 at 50 mA g −1 ) and good cycling performance (88% capacity retention after 100 cycles). In contrast, pure Ti 3 C 2 film only shows a reversible capacity of less than 10 mA h g −1 at 50 mA g −1 . Compared to pure Ti 3 C 2 film (d = 1.4 nm), 3D interwoven Ti 3 C 2 MXene networks (BC/Ti 3 C 2 film) possess larger interlayer spacing (d = 1.8 nm), benefiting the magnesium migration, which is proved through DFT calculation. BC/Ti 3 C 2 film with porous surface is observed through FESEM image. While for Ti 3 C 2 film, all flakes stack together. As expected, the diffusion paths for magnesium ions are optimized in the BC/Ti 3 C 2 film. Besides, Galvanostatic Intermittent Titration Technique shows a much larger magnesium diffusion coefficient of BC/Ti 3 C 2 film than that of pure Ti 3 C 2 film. Therefore, the larger interlayer spacing, optimized diffusion paths and larger magnesium diffusion coefficient contribute to the high electrochemical performance. Moreover, the working mechanisms of magnesium ion battery equipped with BC/Ti 3 C 2 film are investigated. This work provides a new insight to design MXene-based cathode materials with high-performance.
