Serial nanocomposites consisting of blue fluorescent carbon dots (B-CDs) and MgO nanoparticles were facilely prepared. Then on-site detection and degradation of ethyl-paraoxon were achieved and evaluated. It was revealed that ethyl-paraoxon was firstly decomposed into p-nitrophenol by MgO. Then, p-nitrophenol could significantly quench the fluorescence of decorated B-CDs due to an inner filter effect (IFE). The 0.05B-CDs@MgO showed excellent comprehensive performance among the serial xB-CDs@MgO samples due to its relatively high degradation ability towards ethyl-paraoxon and potent initial fluorescence emission intensity at an excitation wavelength of 360 nm between pH 4 and 10. Finally, based on the IFE, on-site paper sensors via color recognition app on a smartphone were explored compared with a conventional fluorescence spectrometer. Both the quantitative fluorescence intensities and G/B values showed the multi-piecewise linear correlations to ethyl-paraoxon concentration up to 3000 μg/mL in river water with a limit of detection to 0.06 μg/mL and 3.48 μg/mL as well as high recovery rates between 99%-102% and 95%–116%, respectively. The in vitro cytotoxicity and phytotoxicity assessment of the 0.05B-CDs@MgO revealed dose-dependent effects. Such portable and integrated fluorescent B-CDs@MgO nanocomposites on paper arrays show excellent potential in shortening the detection time and reducing the detection cost as a new strategy for the on-site quantitative detection and degradation of ethyl-paraoxon in actual river water.

MgO-modified biochar (MgO-BC) has demonstrated enormous potential for practical application of Cd(Ⅱ) removal from wastewater. Exceptionally numerous MgO adsorption sites and enhanced porosity of MgO-BC are both critical for efficiency Cd(Ⅱ) removal. However, the pursuit of high-content of MgO while maintaining unobstructed pore structure remains a challenge due to the blockage of BC pores by the MgO particles. Herein, we demonstrated that Mg(NO 3 ) 2 can synergistically enhance the porosity and MgO active site of biochar attributing to the oxidation of nitrate. The prepared MgO-BC exhibits highly porous framework structure. Remarkably, further adsorption results indicate the MgO-BC has outstanding adsorption capacity of Cd(Ⅱ) in solution. The immobilized contaminant Cd(Ⅱ) onto MgO-BC was predominantly attributable to the chemical and physical interaction, including ion exchange, cation-π interaction, surface complexation and electrostatic interaction. This strategy demonstrates a novel route to develop efficient adsorbents by tailoring structure and metal oxide via nitrate activation.

Thermochemical energy storage (TCES) is a promising energy storage method because of its high energy storage density and long-term storage ability. The reactor is the most critical part of the TCES system, and the fluidized bed reactor (FBR) is a novel reactor, which is not restricted by the low effective thermal conductivity of energy storage materials. However, there is little theoretical guidance about the design and operation of the FBR for a TCES system. In this study, we investigated the performance of an FBR using MgO/Mg(OH) 2 as reaction materials by establishing a numerical model followed by experimental validation. The influence of operating parameters on the bed temperature was discussed based on numerical results. According to the sensitivity analysis, the reactor inner diameter, material mass, and inlet gas velocity were the main factors affecting the bed temperature. The optimal boundary surface temperature was analyzed, which influences the proportion of TCES in the total heat storage.

Biodegradable bone grafts have gained considerable attention in the field of clinical research as they can be used to avoid re-surgery to remove scaffolds. We fabricated biodegradable composite ceramic scaffolds using magnesium oxide and calcium phosphate following the vat photopolymerization technology. We studied the effects of different magnesium oxide content on the process of in vitro degradation of the composite scaffolds and discussed the degradation process by comparing the extent of degradation realized in Tris-HCl buffer and simulated body fluids. We also explored the variations in the mechanical properties of the scaffolds during degradation. The results revealed that the composite scaffolds maintained the strength standard for spongy bone (compressive strength σ: 2–20 MPa) even after 28 d of degradation. Additionally, the strength of the composite scaffold containing 80 wt% magnesium oxide was comparable to the strength standard recommended for cortical bones (σ: 100–200 MPa). Controllable degradation rates were recorded, and acceptable mechanical properties were observed for these scaffolds during degradation. The results reported herein can be potentially used to expand the application prospects of biodegradable scaffolds.

Polymer dielectric materials are crucial for storage devices in power and electronic systems, as well as electric vehicles, due to their high energy density and fast discharge rates. Polymer nanocomposites (PNCs) possess superb electrical and energy storage properties, making them highly promising as next-generation thin-film dielectrics for energy storage. The excellent performance of PNCs derive from the interfacial region introduced by nano-doping. However, the current measurement equipment and technology make it difficult to accurately obtain the mesoscopic scale distribution characteristics of the conductivity of the interfacial region, and are also impossible to clarify the formation mechanism of deep traps in the interfacial region. We employed high-throughput simulation and experiment to investigate the mesoscopic conductivity and trap distribution properties of the interfacial region in PNCs. Furthermore, we developed a three-dimensional mesoscopic conductivity distribution simulation model of PNCs containing polymer matrix, nanoparticles, and interfacial region. The interfacial region size and conductivity distribution of the PNCs were determined by comparing with the experimental results, and the mesoscopic distribution characteristics of the interfacial traps in PNCs were obtained. It is proved that the nanofillers form a condensed structure with high order and compactness by restraining the movement of molecular chains, which deepens the trap energy in the interfacial region and restricts the free volume expansion. This results in the formation of interfacial regions with low conductivity, contributing to enhancing energy storage performance.

Bone repair and regeneration processes are markedly impaired in diabetes mellitus (DM). Intervening approaches similar to those developed for normal healing conditions have been adopted to combat DM-associated bone regeneration. However, limited outcomes were achieved for these approaches. Hence, together with osteoconductive hydroxyapatite (HA) nanocrystals, osteoinductive magnesium oxide (MgO) nanocrystals were uniformly mounted into the network matrix of an organic hydrogel composed of cysteine-modified γ-polyglutamic acid (PGA-Cys) to construct a hybrid and rough hydrogel scaffold. It was hypothesized that the HA/MgO nanocrystal hybrid hydrogel (HA/MgO-H) scaffold can significantly promote bone repair in DM rats via the controlled release of Mg2+. The HA/MgO-H scaffold exhibited a sponge-like morphology with porous 3D networks inside it and displayed higher mechanical strength than a PGA-Cys scaffold. Meanwhile, the HA/MgO-H scaffold gradually formed a tough hydrogel with G′ of more than 1000 Pa after hydration, and its high hydration swelling ratio was still retained. Moreover, after the chemical degradation of the dispersed MgO nanocrystals, slow release of Mg2+ from the hydrogel matrix was achieved for up to 8 weeks because of the chelation between Mg2+ and the carboxyl groups of PGA-Cys. In vitro cell studies showed that the HA/MgO-H scaffold could not only effectively promote the migration and proliferation of BMSCs but could also induce osteogenic differentiation. Moreover, in the 8th week after implanting the HA/MgO-H scaffold into femur bone defect zones of DM rats, more effective bone repair was presented by micro-CT imaging. The bone mineral density (397.22 ± 16.36 mg cm−3), trabecular thickness (0.48 ± 0.07 mm), and bone tissue volume/total tissue volume (79.37 ± 7.96%) in the HA/MgO-H group were significantly higher than those in the other groups. Moreover, higher expression of COL-I and OCN after treatment with HA/MgO-H was also displayed. The bone repair mechanism of the HA/MgO-H scaffold was highly associated with reduced infiltration of pro-inflammatory macrophages (CD80+) and higher angiogenesis (CD31+). Collectively, the HA/MgO-H scaffold without the usage of bioactive factors may be a promising biomaterial to accelerate bone defect healing under diabetes mellitus.

Photocatalysis has attracted worldwide attention in the fields of energy storage and environmental remediation. However, the solar-to-energy conversion efficiency is still low due to fast charge carrier recombination in the bulk phase of conventional photocatalysts. Herein, a series of photocatalysts including g-C 3 N 4 (GCN), non-polar MgO(110)/GCN composite, MgO(110)+GCN mixture, polar MgO(111)/GCN composite, and MgO(111)+GCN mixture are prepared and their photocatalytic activities are investigated systematically. The polar and non-polar MgO improve the photocatalytic properties of GCN in the following order: MgO(111)+GCN>MgO(110)/GCN>MgO(111)/GCN>MgO(110)+GCN>GCN. Benefiting from charge carrier separation rendered by the local electric field (LEF) induced by MgO(111) polarization, MgO(111) improves the performance of GCN significantly when it is mixed with GCN. However, the enhancement effects are reduced when it is combined with or integrated into GCN as in the MgO(111)/GCN composite, where the traditional heterojunction effect constitutes the main enhancement mechanism. Our study reveals that the photocatalytic enhancement by the LEF effect is superior to that by the traditional heterojunction effect based on polar supporting materials. Our results offer insights into the enhancement mechanism of photocatalysts with polar supporting materials and reveal a simple strategy to optimize photocatalytic processes to exploit solar energy efficiently.

0.5Li 2 MnO 3 ·0.5LiNi 0.5 Mn 0.3 Co 0.2 O 2 cathode materials with nano-MgO and nano-TiO 2 coating layers are synthesized via a facile approach. These nanocoating layers with a thickness of ≈20 nm are homogeneously coated on the surface of the materials. With the nano-MgO and nano-TiO 2 coating layers, the modified materials deliver excellent electrochemical performance. Nano-MgO-coated and nano-TiO 2 -coated Li-rich materials exhibit 147.56 and 137.96 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 1C rate and deliver 156.13 and 130.69 mAh g −1 at 2C rate, respectively, in the voltage range of 2.0–4.8 V. The materials with nano-MgO and nano-TiO 2 coating layers also show a high discharge voltage retention of more than 90% after 50 cycles, low impedance for Li + migration, and high diffusion coefficients of the lithium ions. Nano-MgO and nano-TiO 2 coating layers help decrease the content of Li 2 CO 3 on the surface of the materials and suppress side reactions. Thus, these materials play a significant role in strengthening the electrochemical performance of Li-rich cathode materials.

Tungsten substituted mesoporous FDU-12 (W-FDU-12) catalysts were synthesized by a one-pot hydrothermal process using F127 as the structure directing agent. The studies of TEM, SAXS and BET illustrated that the highly ordered mesoporous structure of FDU-12 was maintained in the doped W-FDU-12 samples. XPS studies revealed that a high concentration of W5+ species appeared in doped W-FDU-12 catalysts whereas supported WO3/FDU-12 and WO3/SiO2 catalysts only contained W6+ species. Tandem catalytic conversion of 1-butene and ethene to propene through isomerization of 1-butene to 2-butene and consecutive cross metathesis of 2-butene and ethene in a fixed-bed reactor at different temperatures and atmospheric pressure was used to evaluate the catalytic performance of the W-FDU-12 catalyst, combined with MgO. The catalytic results showed that the doped W-FDU-12 illustrated a superior catalytic performance relative to the supported WO3/FDU-12 and WO3/SiO2 catalysts. The higher metathesis activity of W-FDU-12 catalysts can be ascribed to the good dispersion of W species and the incorporation of W species into the framework of FDU-12, forming a substantial amount of W5+, which was beneficial for the cross metathesis of 2-butene and ethene to propene.

In order to determine the relationship between the property of MgOAl 2 O 3 SiO 2 composite ceramics and molar ratios of MgO/Al 2 O 3 , especially the sintering behavior and thermal shock resistance, the MgOAl 2 O 3 SiO 2 composite ceramics were fabricated with micro-size MgO , Al 2 O 3 powder and nano-size SiO 2 as main raw materials. The sample was characterized by phase analysis, densification and thermal shock times. Moreover, field emission scanning electron microscope was also conducted to study microstructure of the samples before and after thermal shock. Effect of different molar ratios of MgO/Al 2 O 3 on the sintering behavior and thermal shock resistance of composite ceramics were investigated. The results showed that the sample possess better sintering behavior and thermal shock resistance with the molar ratio of MgO/Al 2 O 3 equal to 2/1. Grains of periclase and spinel were directly bonded together, resulting in a dense and compact microstructure, and the bulk density of obtained sample reached 3.4 g/cm 3 . The microstructure of sample after thermal shock revealed that the crack propagation path was deflected and bifurcated, the main-crack propagation was restricted and more fracture energy was consumed, the thermal shock resistance of composite ceramics was greatly improved.

The effects of MgO addition on the microstructure and mechanical, frictional, and wear properties of zirconia-toughened alumina (ZTA) ceramics were investigated in this study using hot pressure sintering (HP). The addition of trace amounts of MgO led to the refinement of the ceramic grains and an increase in the ceramic density due to the pinning effect of MgO. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results revealed that an MgAl 2 O 4 phase was formed in the ceramics, which also contributed to the refinement of the ceramic grains. Moreover, the addition of MgO promoted the uniformity of the ceramic microstructure. Among the tested composites, the composite with 0.4 wt.% MgO exhibited the most favorable comprehensive properties, including a relative density of 99.61%, hardness of 18.29 GPa, and indentation fracture toughness of 9.15 MPa·m 1/2 , thereby offering the highest resistance to adhesive wear.

MgO/Ag nanoparticles (NPs) have been surface modified with the silane coupling agent KH-570. The modified NPs (KMA) were added to poly (butylene succinate- co -terephthalate) (PBST) to prepare the K-PMA composite films. The modification improved the compatibility between MgO/Ag NPs and PBST matrix. The study comprehensively investigated the effects of modified MgO/Ag NPs on the mechanical, antibacterial, and preservation properties of bio-nanocomposite films. The incorporation of NPs substantially improved the mechanical and barrier properties of the PBST matrix. The composite films exhibited the best overall performance when the nanoparticle content is 3 %. In particular, the elongation at break, tensile strength, and water vapor permeability ( WVP ) were 794.67 %, 32.20 MPa, and 1.53 × 10 −11 g·m/m 2 ·s·Pa, respectively. Furthermore, the K-PMA-3 composite film exhibited excellent antibacterial properties and food preservation performance. The inhibition rates against Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ), Escherichia coli ( E. coli ), and Salmonella paratyphi B ( S. paratyphi B ) were all over 98 %. After 6 days of preservation experiments, the mass loss of cherry tomatoes wrapped with K-PMA-3 film was only 5.9 %, which was only 45 % of the mass loss of cherry tomatoes wrapped with PMA-3 film. The results showed that the prepared biofilms have a great potential to be used as food packaging films.
