Effect of MXene content on the electromagnetic wave absorption performance of MXene-based composites

An Boyuan,Zhang Dongjie,Liu Yuyan,Fan Zhimin,Tan Huifeng,Xie Zhimin

Ti 3 C 2 T x (MXene)-based composites are considered electromagnetic wave absorption (EMA) materials due to their dielectric properties, microstructure, and synergistic interactions with magnetic particles. A better understanding of the effect of the MXene content in composites on the EMA performance is essential for their application, yet it remains unclear. Here, MXene/PU@Fe 3 O 4 (MPF) microspheres with different MXene contents were produced through the incorporation of magnetic particles and multiple electrostatic self-assembly processes. The results show that when the molar ratio of MXene to Fe 3 O 4 is less than 0.5:1, the EMA performance of the MPF microspheres gradually increases with increasing MXene content. MPF microspheres exhibit the best EMA performance when the molar ratio of MXene to Fe 3 O 4 is 0.5:1, with a maximum reflection loss (RL) of 44.0 dB and an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 2.30 GHz. Further increases in this ratio led to an increase in the EAB but a slight reduction in the maximum RL. Additionally, the combination of the same MXene and Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticle ratio had no significant effect on the EMA performance. We expect that this work will enrich the EMA performance research on MXene-based composites.

Ultrathin Flexible CoNi/MXene/CoNi/MXene/TPU Nanocomposite Films for Durable, High-Efficiency Electromagnetic Shielding

Bozhen Wu,Yanghua Song,Zhongpu Shi,Shijie Zhang,Yongkang Meng,Hanghang Zhang,Jintao Yang

With the growing demand for flexible electronic systems, requirements for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials are also increasing. These materials must not only be lightweight and deformable but also provide excellent shielding performance. However, traditional shielding materials often face challenges: it is difficult to balance shielding effectiveness, flexibility, and weight. To address these challenges, this study designed a multilayer cobalt–nickel alloy (CoNi)/transition-metal carbide/nitride (MXene)/CoNi/MXene/thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) nanocomposite film employing an “absorption–reflection–reabsorption” electromagnetic attenuation strategy, which was fabricated through processes including electrospinning, vacuum-assisted filtration, and interfacial bonding. Its structure consists of a surface magnetic absorption layer composed of CoNi nanoparticles anchored within electrospun TPU nanofibers; an intermediate magnetoelectric transition layer in which CoNi nanoparticles are grown in situ on two-dimensional MXene nanosheets to form MXene/CoNi nanoheterostructures; and a bottom conductive reflective layer consisting of a continuous MXene nanosheet network deposited on a TPU fiber membrane. The hierarchical nanoheterostructures at each interface enable synergistic magnetic loss, conductive loss, and interfacial polarization loss, yielding an absorption-dominant shielding mechanism. Experimental results demonstrate that the composite film achieves an overall electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) of 30.89 dB with an absorption coefficient (A) of 0.56 at an ultrathin thickness of just 0.27 mm, exhibiting a highly efficient shielding mechanism dominated by absorption. The nanorough surface architecture also imparts outstanding hydrophobicity. Durability tests confirm that the film retains EMI SE above the commercial threshold after 15 days of aqueous immersion, 15 days of thermal oxidation at 50 °C, and 200 cyclic tensile deformations, demonstrating acceptable functional durability for practical flexible and wearable electromagnetic shielding applications.

An intercalated structure MXene@CCNS: cuttlefish ink-derived carbon nanospheres composite Ti3C2Tx MXene for supercapacitors

Dawei Wang,Yue Lian,Qiuping Zhou,Hongliang Fu,Yongfeng Hu,Jing Zhao,Huaihao Zhang

The Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene with unique two-dimensional layered structure is a promising material for energy storage. However, the self-stacking behavior of MXene nanosheets limits its electrochemical performance. In this study, a heterostructured composite has been developed by intercalating cuttlefish ink-derived carbon nanospheres into layers of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheet through an electrostatic self-assembly method. This design effectively increases the interlayer spacing of MXene, and prevents it from tightly stacking. The heterostructure enlarges the specific surface area and exposes more active sites, thus improving the charge storage capacity and ion/electron transport. In Addition, the heterostructure buffers the volume changes of electrode material during charge-discharge processes, resulting in enhanced cycling stability. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed that the heterostructure effectively modulates the electronic structure of MXene. Compared to pure MXene, the composite exhibits significantly improved specific capacitance (264 F g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 ), better rate capability (76.9 % capacitance retention from 0.5 A g −1 to 10 A g −1 ) and greater cycling stability (93.4 % capacitance retention after 5000 cycles). Based on this electrode material, the assembled symmetric supercapacitor achieves 12.8 Wh kg −1 of energy density at 0.2 kW kg −1 of power density and a capacitance retention of 91.7 % after 5000 cycles.

One stone for three birds: One-step engineering highly elastic and conductive hydrogel electronics with multilayer MXene as initiator, crosslinker and conductive filler simultaneously

Jiahui Huang,Xianwu Huang,Peiyi Wu

Conductive hydrogels incorporated with MXene are promising interfacial materials utilized in electronics for human–machine interactions, where MXene nanosheets often act as the multifunctional nanofillers to bring both improved properties and novel functionalities. However, little attention is paid on their contribution to the gelation of MXene-polymer hydrogels. In this work, a new multilayer MXene (m-MXene) initiator and its triple roles in preparing highly elastic and conductive hydrogels are reported. The new m-MXene initiator can generate hydroxyl radical species, verified by electron paramagnetic resonance tests, and initiate the polymerization of a series of vinyl monomers free of light, heat, or co-initiators. On this basis, only by one-step mixing m-MXene and a kind of cationic monomers, the monomers are initiated and simultaneously crosslinked by m-MXene to form a high-quality composite hydrogel within several minutes, displaying integrated merits of high stretchability, elasticity, low hysteresis, adhesiveness, and self-healing performance. Ingeniously, during the gelation, m-MXene is in-situ exfoliated to form well-organized conductive networks, and the steric stability of the polymer further enhances the stability of MXenes. With the combined convenient methods and excellent electromechanical behaviors ( e.g. , ultrafast responsiveness and an ultrabroad working range), a novel wireless six-pixel Braille typewriter is fabricated based on this conductive hydrogel , unveiling its brilliant prospects for flexible electronics.

Flexible Asymmetric Fe3O4/MXene/WPU–MXene/WPU Nanocomposite Bilayer Films for Direction-Dependent Electromagnetic Interference Shielding

Yuan Yanru,Wang Yanxiang,Peng Xu,Guo Jinghe,Zhang Dong,Xu Ziyi,Gao Peiyi,Wang Xueqi,Zhang Can,Zhao Minchen

Flexible electronic devices require electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials that combine effective shielding, mechanical flexibility, and controlled surface reflection. However, highly conductive Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheet networks often induce excessive electromagnetic reflection, limiting electromagnetic wave penetration and subsequent attenuation. To address this limitation, a thickness-direction asymmetric bilayer architecture was designed to reduce front-surface reflection and regulate electromagnetic power distribution, rather than relying only on strong reflection for EMI shielding. The bilayer consists of a Fe 3 O 4 /MXene/WPU incident layer with lower apparent electrical conductivity and a MXene/WPU backing layer with higher apparent electrical conductivity to regulate electromagnetic wave propagation and suppress transmission. Nanometer-thick Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets and Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles were incorporated into waterborne polyurethane (WPU), and the asymmetric Fe 3 O 4 /MXene/WPU–MXene/WPU bilayer film was fabricated by vacuum-assisted filtration and hot pressing. The optimized FMW-M 15 film exhibited an X-band total shielding effectiveness of 30.8 dB at a thickness of 60.0 ± 0.9 μm, together with a tensile strength of 31.3 MPa and an elongation at break of 192.5%. Under Fe 3 O 4 /MXene/WPU-side incidence, the reflection, absorption, and transmission coefficients were 0.7964, 0.2028, and <0.001, respectively. Reversing the incidence direction increased reflection and reduced absorption, confirming the direction-dependent electromagnetic response.

3D porous layered CuCoP/MXene nanoflowers via MXene-assisted in situ growth for non-enzymatic glucose biosensing

Qiao Wan,Yajun Li,Yahong Su,Wenqing Jia,Jiang Zhu,Qiang Yu,Zhen Chen,Lingli Lei,Yuanyuan Zhang

This study aims to develop a high-performance, low-cost non-enzymatic electrochemical sensing materials for glucose detection, addressing the limitations of existing technologies. A three-dimensional porous hierarchical layered-nanoflower heterostructured CuCoP/MXene composite was synthesized through in situ growth of CuCo-MOF nanoflowers on Ti 3 C 2 -MXene via a one-step hydrothermal method, followed by oxidation and phosphidation treatments. This unique architecture significantly increases the specific reactive surface area, exposes abundant active sites, and provides sufficient interfacial regions for glucose oxidation. The synergistic effect between copper (Cu) and cobalt (Co) further enhances the electrocatalytic performance. Meanwhile, MXene serves as a conductive scaffold that not only facilitates electron transfer but also promotes the diffusion and adsorption of glucose molecules, owing to its excellent conductivity and continuous interlayer channels. The fabricated sensor exhibits an extensive linear detection range (0.5-6000 μM), high sensitivity (1408.49 μA mM -1 ·cm -2 ), a low detection limit (0.14 μM, S/N=3), along with excellent selectivity, reproducibility, and stability, together with a swift response time (3 s). Moreover, the sensor has been successfully applied to the accurate detection of glucosein samples of serum, showing high reliability and promising practical value.

Variety of ZIF-8/MXene-Based Lightweight Microwave-Absorbing Materials: Preparation and Performances of ZnO/MXene Nanocomposites

Yufei Huang,Yalan Xie,Jia Zhao,Xuan Yin,Chunpeng Chai

Microwave-absorbing materials that are used for stealth weapons and equipment should have excellent characteristics of strong absorption, a wide absorption bandwidth, low thickness, and light weight. Ti3C2Tx, as a two-dimensional (2D) MXene material, shows great potential in the field of microwave absorption. However, MXene has problems of impedance mismatch, a narrow absorption bandwidth, and poor absorption performances. In this study, we designed a series of ZIF-8/MXene-based microwave-absorbing materials known as porous ZnO/MXene nanocomposites, which were synthesized by an in situ composite method before being annealed under vacuum. Then, the structure and performances of porous ZnO/MXene were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and using a vector network analyzer (VNA). We investigated the influences of the mass ratio, microstructure, morphology, and microwave absorption performances of the samples on raw materials. As a result, ZnO/MXene nanocomposites with a mass ratio of Zn2+/MXene = 2:1 showed the optimum microwave absorption performance. The minimum reflection loss was −34.31 dB at 8.8 GHz (thickness 1.0 mm), and the effective absorption bandwidth was 3.47 GHz from 13.49 to 16.96 GHz.

The Preparation of High-Performance and Stable MXene Nanofiltration Membranes with MXene Embedded in the Organic Phase

Qiang Xue,Kaisong Zhang

Nanomaterials embedded in nanofiltration membranes have become a promising modification technology to improve separation performance. As a novel representation of two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials, MXene has nice features with a strong negative charge and excellent hydrophilicity. Our previous research showed that MXene nanosheets were added in the aqueous phase, which enhanced the permeselectivity of the membrane and achieved persistent desalination performance. Embedding the nanomaterials into the polyamide layer through the organic phase can locate the nanomaterials on the upper surface of the polyamide layer, and also prevent the water layer around the hydrophilic nanomaterials from hindering the interfacial polymerization reaction. We supposed that if MXene nanosheets were added in the organic phase, MXene nanosheets would have more negative contact sites on the membrane surface and the crosslinking degree would increase. In this study, MXene were dispersed in the organic phase with the help of ultrasound, then MXene nanocomposite nanofiltration membranes were achieved. The prepared MXene membranes obtained enhanced negative charge and lower effective pore size. In the 28-day persistent desalination test, the Na2SO4rejection of MXene membrane could reach 98.6%, which showed higher rejection compared with MXene embedded in aqueous phase. The results of a long-time water immersion test showed that MXene membrane could still maintain a high salt rejection after being soaked in water for up to 105 days, which indicated MXene on the membrane surface was stable. Besides MXene membrane showed high rejection for high-concentration brine and good mono/divalent salt separation performance in mono/divalent mixed salt solutions. As a part of the study of MXene in nanofiltration membranes, we hoped this research could provide a theoretical guidance for future research in screening different addition methods and different properties.Keywords:MXene;nanofiltration;anti-swelling;mono/divalent ion separation;high saline removal

Haohuan Yuan,Wenting Xiao,Xin Zhang,Jiao Bao,Wei Li,Bo Huang,Guannan He

Efficient carrier separation and high electron migration efficiency are essential for sustainable H 2 energy production via photocatalysis . In this work, a Mn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S/Ti 3 C 2 MXene/g-C 3 N 4 all-solid-state Z-scheme photocatalyst is constructed by a series of processes, including low temperature calcination , etching, ultrasonication and solvothermal process. The appropriate energy band structures of g-C 3 N 4 and Mn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S enable the formation of the Z-scheme system, achieving efficient carrier separation. The Ti 3 C 2 MXene flakes assembled between g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets and Mn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S particles can accelerate the charge migration rate in the system. The optimized ternary composite exhibits the highest hydrogen evolution rate (HER) of 13.7 mmol g −1  h −1 , which is much higher than that of the pure g-C 3 N 4 and Mn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S. Meanwhile, the apparent quantum yield (AQY) value of the composite at 420 nm reaches up to 24.07 % and exhibits high stability. Based on the characterization, the photocatalytic mechanism of carrier transfer in the Z-scheme heterojunction is also revealed. The finding of this article provides insights into the high efficiency of carrier transfer and separation in the photocatalytic reactions.

MXene nanomesh for high-performance supercapacitor

Wei Zheng,Li Yang,Lixuan Wang,Long Pan,Peigen Zhang,ZhengMing Sun

The merits of excellent electrical conductivity , good hydrophilicity, and large specific capacitances render MXene film electrodes attractive in supercapacitors (SCs). However, the tortuous ion transfer in restacked nanosheets limits the electrochemical performance of dense film electrodes. To solve the ion transfer issue, we propose a strategy to produce porous films assembled by Ti 3 C 2 nanomesh via the chemical oxidation-etching process. The rich in-plane pores in Ti 3 C 2 nanomesh provide abundant pathways and new active sites for ion transfer/adsorption, greatly improving the electrochemical activity. Specifically, the obtained Ti 3 C 2 nanomesh films exhibit high specific capacitances of 235 F g -1 at 1 A g -1 and 184 F g -1 at 10 A g -1 in 6 M KOH, which are ∼2 times higher than the pristine Ti 3 C 2 films (118 F g -1 at 1 A g -1 and 90 F g -1 at 10 A g -1 ). Furthermore, hybrid capacitors, composed of the Ti 3 C 2 nanomesh films as the negative electrodes and Ni-Co layered double hydroxides as the positive electrodes, in KOH electrolytes, are also demonstrated to show practicability. This work provides an opportunity to develop high-performance energy storage devices with the 2D nanomesh.

Efficient mechanical exfoliation of MXene nanosheets

Yuchen Liu,Qi Tang,Mao Xu,Jie Ren,Chan Guo,Cheng Chen,Wenjing Geng,Weiwei Lei,Xiaoli Zhao,Dan Liu

MXenes family has attracted intense interests owing to their unique physical and chemical features. However, current preparation approaches for MXenes holding complex procedures and strict conditions, time-consuming, as well as low production hinder their further potential applications. Here, we developed an efficient one-step mechanical exfoliation (ECO-ME) method for the rapid and high-yielding of Ti 3 C 2 , which offers a dramatic reduction in preparation time compared to conventional methods. The ECO-ME synthetic pathway was then demonstrated as a universal method for Ti 2 C. The ECO-ME MXenes formed stable colloids in aqueous and dispersed well in seven organic solvents for over 30 days, respectively. In addition, the prepared MXene showed the ability to load several nanoparticles at room temperature for 100% reduction of p -nitrophenol in around 10 min. This study, therefore, offers an efficient, energy conservation and universal method for the preparation of Ti-based MXenes, endowing MXenes with broad application prospects.
