Background NO 2 − and S 2− are two kinds of common toxic anions widely distributed in environmental water, soil and food products. Human beings have suffered a lot of diseases from intake of excessive NO 2 − or S 2− , i.e ., infantile methemoglobin , cancer and even to death. Although tremendous efforts have been afforded to monitor NO 2 − and S 2− , most were high instrument-depended with complex processing procedures. To keep food safety and to protect human health, it will be a huge challenge to develop a convenient and efficient way to monitor S 2− and NO 2 − in practice. Results A kind of folic acid capping Bi 3+ -doped Ag quantum dots (FA@Bi 3+ -Ag QDs) was developed for the first time by one-pot homogeneous reduced self-assembly. Not only did FA@Bi 3+ -Ag QDs possess intrinsic fluorescent property, it expressed synergistic peroxidase-like activity to catalyze the redox of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) and H 2 O 2 with K m / v max of 0.087 mM/6.61 × 10 −8 M s −1 and 6.42 mM/6.25 × 10 −7 M s −1 respectively. Interestingly, trace S 2− could exclusively alter its fluorescent property and peroxidase-like activity, exhibiting significant hypochromic and “turn-on” fluorescent effects. While trace NO 2 − could make FA@Bi 3+ -Ag QDs-TMB-H 2 O 2 system hyperchromic. Under the optimized conditions, FA@Bi 3+ -Ag QDs were applied for dual-mode recognition of S 2− and visual sensing of NO 2 − in real food samples with satisfactory recoveries, i.e ., 100.7–107.9 %/95.8–104.7 % and 97.2–104.8 % respectively. The synergistic enzyme-mimic mechanism of FA@Bi 3+ -Ag QDs and its selective response mechanisms to S 2− and NO 2 − were also proposed. Significance This represents the first nanozyme-based FA@Bi 3+ -Ag QDs system for dual-mode recognition of S 2− and visual sensing of NO 2 − , well meeting the basic requirement in drinking water set by WHO. It will offer a promising way for multi-mode monitoring of different pollution using the same nanozyme-based sensor.

There is a great concern for nitrogen oxide (NO 2 ) due to its hazardous effects on environment and human health, therefore, many types of NO 2 sensors have been proposed. Among them, surface acoustic wave (SAW) NO 2 sensors show intrinsic advantages such as wireless monitoring, but their combined sensitivities, responses, and limits of detection operated at room temperature remain huge challenges. In this study, we proposed an integration strategy in which graphene oxide-molybdenum disulfide/tin dioxide (GO-MoS 2 /SnO 2 ) ternary composite film was rationally designed on a SAW resonator for detection of low concentrations of NO 2 at room temperature (25°C), and its response speed are enhanced with ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation. Characterization results revealed that MoS 2 and SnO 2 formed the MoS 2 /SnO 2 heterojunctions through interfacial chemical bonds of S-Sn-O, and the GO-MoS 2 /SnO 2 ternary composite showed a hierarchical structure with the heterojunctions exposed and covered by the flake-structure GO. It achieved a large specific surface area of 111.6 m 2 /g, abundant functional groups, and numerous surface defects, providing plentiful adsorption and reaction sites of NO 2 . The developed NO 2 sensor showed a low limit of detection of 1 ppm, a high sensitivity of ∼164.77 Hz/ppm, and fast response/recovery time of 16.4 s/19.1 s, as well as excellent repeatability, selectivity, and long-term stability. The key sensing mechanisms were identified as the large surface areas of the stacked composite leading to the increased adsorption and reaction sites, enhanced conductivity through the MoS 2 /SnO 2 heterojunctions, and numerous photogenerated charge carriers produced by UV activation.

NO 2 is one of the most important atmosphere pollutants, causing great harm to the human body at very low concentrations (ppb levels). Herein, a novel fabrication idea for gas sensing materials was reported to detect ppb-level NO 2 via MOF-derived porous In 2 O 3 nanospheres (NSs) sensitized by CdS quantum dots (QDs). The good distribution of CdS QDs (2.5–4.0 nm) on porous In 2 O 3 NSs was verified by the transmission electron microscopy and element mapping analyses. In comparison to In 2 O 3 NSs, the CdS@In 2 O 3 composite nanospheres (CNSs) exhibited exceptional responses to ppb-level concentrations of NO 2 ( S =425.1@100 ppb) at room temperature (RT, 25 °C), while also demonstrating good selectivity and response reproducibility. These improvements in sensing performance were attributed to the synergies of the electronic effects of CdS QDs, MOF-derived porous nanostructures , and enhanced adsorption of NO 2 and active O 2 – by well-dispersed CdS QDs. This work emphasizes that the MOF-derived In 2 O 3 porous NSs sensitized by CdS QDs can accurately detect ppb-level concentrations of the NO 2 at RT.

In the typical wet flue gas denitration technology using sulfite solutions, the rapid free radical chain reaction of SO3•– oxidation by O2 is the main reason for the significant consumption of absorbents and inefficient denitration. The study utilizes l-ascorbic acid (VC) to inhibit the free radical chain reaction. VC combined with SO3•– to form stable compounds, which hindered the oxidation of SO3•– to SO5•– by O2, leading to an 80.7 mol % decrease in Na2SO3 consumption by adding millimolar-level VC. Compared to the sulfite solution, the best denitration efficiency of the VC/Na2SO3 mixture solution increased from 94.4 to 99.2 vol %, and the absorption time for absorption efficiency above 90 vol % was extended from 7 to 72 min. Additionally, a macro absorption model describing the rates of macro absorption was established based on various operating conditions.

Realizing nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) detections based on semiconductor-based gas sensors with high tolerance to humidity conditions is deemed to be a long-term challenge. To independently acknowledge the physiosorbed-water influence mechanism on semiconductor-based sensors, hydrophobic zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) covered chemisorbed-oxygen-nonexistence zinc hydroxyfluoride (ZnOHF) snowflake-like nanorod bundles are synthesized for NO 2 detections with non-hindrance of interfering gases and high humidity in our work. Gas-sensing testing results display that the 0.6ZIF-8/ZnOHF-based gas sensor provides an optimum NO 2 response of 12.1–10 ppm NO 2 at the operating temperature of 200 ℃ with excellent NO 2 selectivity. As the relative humidity (RH) increases from 20% RH to 80% RH, the response of the 0.6ZIF-8/ZnOHF sensor shows a marginal fluctuation of only 13%, exhibiting outstanding anti-humidity characteristics towards NO 2 detections, the outperformed NO 2 selectivity and humidity tolerance of which are greatly attributed to the unique band structures of ZnOHF and the surficial hydrophobic treatment by ZIF-8, which is further validated via In-situ diffuse reflection infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy ( In-situ DRIFTS) and electronic structure analyses. Humidity impact on ZnOHF poses a persuasive evidence for establishing the separate physiosorbed water interfering mechanism on semiconductors. This work endows a perspective on optimizing humidity tolerance for semiconductor-based sensors at low operating temperature.

Electrically conductive metal-organic frameworks (EC-MOFs) exhibit significant potential application as sensing materials for chemical resistance gas sensors. Herein, we developed a flexible gas sensor based on Ni 3 (HITP) 2 nanosheets co-functionalized with noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) and WS 2 quantum dots (QDs) for NO 2 detection at room temperature. The gas sensing performance was regulated by optimizing the metal species and loading ratios of WS 2 QDs. The measured results revealed that Au NPs and 2 mol% WS 2 achieved the most effective enhancement for NO 2 sensing performance. Therefore, Au NPs was selected to optimize WS 2 -2/Ni 3 (HITP) 2 sensor for further improving the sensing properties. A unique hierarchical structure based on gas sensor (Au 3 @WS 2 -2/Ni 3 (HITP) 2 sensor) enables high response (14.73 % to 5 ppm NO 2 ), rapid response/recovery time (97 s/110 s), good selectivity, anti-humidity, repeatability, long-term stability as well as flexibility at room temperature. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) and band theory were employed to comprehend adsorption energies and the electronic structures at atomic scale, elucidating the intrinsic correlation between NO 2 adsorption behavior and Ni 3 (HITP) 2 surface and the sensitization mechanism of heterostructures. These findings provide novel insights for designing high-performance NO 2 gas sensors worked at room temperature and guidance for EC-MOFs sensing mechanism.

Well-crystallized one-dimensional (1D) SnO 2 nanobelts were in situ prepared using a simple water-assisted chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. The small Sn particles with Au-modifications were used as source materials instead of big size Sn grains to ensure the high yield of SnO 2 belts. The Au layer was modified on the small Sn particles by treating Sn powders in HAuCl 4 solution combined with the UV irradiation. The as-prepared SnO 2 nanobelts were characterized by SEM, HRTEM, XRD, EDS and XPS. These results indicate that the growth temperature plays an important role in controlling the length-to-width ratio of nanobelts. The length-to-width ratio decreases with the growth temperature from 850 °C to 1000 °C. The nanobelts prepared at 850 °C shows a single-crystalline tetragonal rutile phase with a high length-to-width ratio (approximately tens of microns in length and 40–70 nm in width). However, below 850 °C, nanobelts cannot be formed. The as-prepared nanobelts exhibited excellent sensing properties compared with SnO 2 nanoparticles and high sensing selectivity towards NO 2 . The high sensing selectivity to NO 2 is attributed to the oxygen vacancies presenting in the as-prepared nanobelts.

Pristine metal oxide gas sensors often suffer from poor selectivity and limited polarizability. The objective of this work is to overcome these bottlenecks by developing an advanced material tailored specifically for highly sensitive and intelligent NO 2 sensing applications. Consequently, oxygen vacancy-rich 2D ultrathin Cs-doped WO 3-x nanosheets were synthesized via a solvothermal method. KPFM, UPS, and TAS confirmed that optimal Cs doping (0.08 mol%) optimizes the surface work function and drastically prolongs the photo-generated carrier lifetime (

A mild and efficient method for the solvent-free catalytic nitration of o-xylene (OX) employing silicon sulfonic acid (SSA) as a catalyst and NO 2 as a clean nitrating agent, leads to high selectivity for 4-nitro-o-xylene (4-NOX). Under optimal conditions, a 64.6% selectivity for 4-NOX and a 46.7% conversion of OX were achieved. The results showed that the enhanced OX conversion and target product selectivity were attributed to the synergistic catalysis of the combination of the SSA catalyst and the NO 2 –O 2 system. The characterization results showed that the immobilized SSA, which is not only simple and economical to prepare but also exhibits excellent nitration activity, was effectively synthesized via the chemical bonding method. The highly dispersed sulfonic acid groups were covalently anchored to the surface of the silicon acid (SA), thereby enriching acid sites and stabilizing the catalytic performance. Additionally, a possible reaction mechanism for nitrating OX with NO 2 –O 2 over the SSA catalyst was proposed. Compared with the traditional method, this study promotes the selectivity of the target product while reducing acidic wastewater streams, indicating potential application prospects.

Reduced graphene oxides (RGO)-based materials exhibit high carrier mobility and selective recognition ability to NO 2 , making them constitute promising platform for room-temperature NO 2 detection. However, the low sensitivity becomes the main bottleneck for their further development. Here, we demonstrate that synergy of Pd nanoparticles (NPs) and oxygen vacancies can modulate the surface active sites over SnO 2 NPs modified RGO hybrids (labeled as SR), leading to improving the sensitivity of room-temperature NO 2 sensors. Experimentally, a wet-chemical method was used to introduce oxygen vacancies onto SR, leading to forming SR with rich oxygen vacancies (labeled as SR-Vo), which were subsequently deposited with Pd NPs, resulting in preparing Pd NPs loaded SR-Vo hybrids (labeled as Pd-SR-Vo). Impressively, the response value to 1 ppm NO 2 of Pd-SR-Vo hybrids reaches to 9.8, which is much higher than that of R-Vo hybrids (5.6) and SR hybrids (3.3). The improvement of sensitivity toward NO 2 for Pd-SR-Vo hybrids is attributed to the synergy effect of Pd NPs and oxygen vacancies, including shortening the band gap of Pd-SR-Vo hybrids with raising conduction band level, widening the width of electron depletion layer between SnO 2 -Vo and RGO, introducing Schottky contact between Pd and SnO 2 -Vo, improving efficiency for gas sensing reaction. This work not only provides an efficient approach to fabricate high-performance NO 2 sensors, but also opens a new avenue for sensing materials design and modification.

The porous and tubular structure is conducive to improving performance of sensing materials. At present, how to obtain sensitive materials with unique porosity and high surface activity by green, low-cost and simple synthesis methods is still a challenge. In this work, novel In 2 O 3 porous microtubes were obtained by water etching of MIL-68-In and calcination methods for the first time. The as-prepared microtubes exhibit excellent NO 2 sensitivity at 50 ℃ (S=156–3 ppm NO 2 ), and the limit of detection is 50 ppb. The sensor also has good NO 2 detection ability in the actual environment. The excellent NO 2 sensing performance at low temperature is closely related to high surface activity of In 2 O 3 porous microtubes. Combined with TPD, in-stiu DRIFT and XPS technologies, the NO 2 sensing mechanism was detailed analyzed. This work provides useful guidance for constructing high performance NO 2 sensor. The excellent NO 2 sensing performance at low temperature makes a positive contribution to promoting the application of metal oxide sensors in environmental detection.

The development of highly sensitive and selective gas sensors for detection of nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) is imperative for environmental monitoring and industrial safety. Herein, we report a novel multi-dimensional heterostructure, 1D MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) nanofibers were derived from 2D MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) through alkaline treatment, then integrated with 0D ZnO nanoparticles for high-performance NO 2 sensing. The unique architecture synergistically combines the high carrier mobility and abundant surface functional terminals of MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) with tunable semiconducting characteristics of ZnO. Benefiting from enhanced charge transfer at the heterointerfaces and maximized active sites, optimized sensor demonstrates exceptional responses to NO 2 at room temperature, realizing a substantial response value of 64.58% towards 50 ppm NO 2 , significantly surpassing pristine MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x ). Notably, the multi-dimensional composite exhibits an ultra-low limit of detection of 25.14 ppb for NO 2 , which meets the requirements for ppb-level detection. Additionally, the response of sensor to NO 2 (64.58%) significantly exceeds that to other interfering gases at equivalent concentrations, such as NH 3 (0.7%) and trimethylamine (7.3%). Furthermore, during long-term stability testing, the response to NO 2 at equivalent concentrations exhibited only a 4.7% decay over approximately 30 days. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the binding energy of this multi-dimensional structure for NO 2 is 0.5 eV, significantly higher than that for other gas species. Theoretical simulations reveal that improved performance originates from strengthened NO 2 adsorption energy and modulated electron depletion layers at hybrid interface. This work provides viable solution for fabricating advanced gas sensors through multi-dimensional material engineering, demonstrating great potential in real-time air quality analysis.
