Breaking scaling relations via Fe/Ni diatomic catalysts towards highly efficient electrocatalysts for rechargeable Na-air batteries

Wenwen Yin,Jiawei Ma,Yanyan Li,Qing Cheng,Bernt Johannessen,Fangxi Xie,Mingmei Wu

Exploiting bifunctional and highly efficient electrocatalysts that can facilitate the reversible formation and decomposition of discharge products is crucial for rechargeable Na-air batteries (SABs). However, restricted by scaling relations, air cathodes based on single metal systems usually exhibit inferior activity and fail to achieve a stable and long cycle life of Na-air batteries. Dual single-atom catalysts (DACs) with two metal sites can circumvent the scaling relations and endow the single-atom catalysts with superior activity. Herein, we present a hollow carbon microsphere loaded with Ni and Fe single atoms (Ni-HCMs-Fe) as a demonstration of DAC air cathodes for SABs. Notably, Na-air batteries with Ni-HCMs-Fe as an air cathode can achieve a low overpotential gap of 530 mV, a high specific capacity of 5382.9 mAh g−1, and an ultralong cycle life of over 450 cycles (1800 hours) with NaO2 as the main discharge product. Due to the different adsorption energies between oxygenated intermediates and Ni/Fe sites, the Ni-HCMs-Fe catalysts can break through the scaling relations and display optimized binding ability towards intermediates, thus boosting the reversible formation and decomposition of NaO2 in SABs. This work pioneers the use of DACs in SABs, paving the way for their practical applications.

P2-Na0.55[Mg0.25Mn0.75]O2: An SEI-free anode for long-life and high-rate Na-ion batteries

Dongxiao Wang,Shuyin Xu,Jianlin Wang,Xiaohui Rong,Feiyu Zhou,Lifen Wang,Xuedong Bai,Bingan Lu,Chengjun Zhu,Yuesheng Wang,Yong-sheng Hu

Room-temperature Na-ion batteries have attracted great interest for over a decade owing to their natural abundance and similar intercalation chemistry with Li-ion. However, due to the uncontrolled decomposition of electrolyte and formation of solid electrolyte interphase, the large majority of sodium anode materials exhibit extremely low initial Coulombic efficiency and unsatisfactory cycling stability. Here we introduce a novel layered material, P2-Na 0.547 [M g 0.25 M n 0.75 ]O 2 , as an SEI-free negative electrode. This material, delivers a reversible capacity of 126 mAh g −1 with a high initial Coulombic efficiency of 108%, and capacity retention of ∼80% after 1000 cycles at 4C rate. Pairing with Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 cathode, excellent rate performance of ∼60% capability at 15C, and extra-high initial Coulombic efficiency of 97% are achieved, all attributed to the SEI-free feature of Na 0.547 [M g 0.25 M n 0.75 ]O 2 . These results demonstrate the practical potential of our SEI-free anode material for high-power and long-life Na-ion batteries.

Enhanced interfacial kinetics and fast Na+ conduction of hybrid solid polymer electrolytes for all-solid-state batteries

Chengzhao Luo,Qinyi Li,Dongyang Shen,Ronghong Zheng,Dong Huang,Yu Chen

All-solid-state batteries suffer from drastic interfacial reactions between the solid electrolyte and electrode, which restricts the performance of the full cell. Herein, a hybrid solid polymer electrolyte with high ionic conductivity and stability has been fabricated by in-situ polymerization of poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) on glass fiber matrix, followed by polyethylene glycol (PEG) infiltration . Such hybrid electrolyte, namely GF@PEGDA@PEG (GFPP), is featured with an interconnecting ionic conducting network and demonstrates high ionic conductivities of 0.8 × 10 −4  S cm −1 at 20 °C and 4.5 × 10 −3  S cm −1 at 60 °C. The ex-situ Attenuated Total Reflectance-Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) of Na/GFPP/Na symmetrical battery proves the excellent stability of GFPP. Furthermore, in-situ Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) analysis and in-situ Raman spectra confirm the enhanced interfacial dynamics achieved by GFPP, being conducive to the intercalation/deintercalation of Na + . Meanwhile, the optical microscope and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) demonstrate the formation of a stable SEI film and limited interfacial side reaction by the incorporation of GFPP. Full sodium metal batteries based on GFPP have been assembled and demonstrated satisfactory electrochemical performance. After being tested for 1100 cycles at a rate of 0.3 C, the Coulombic efficiency of Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 (NVP) /GFPP/Na full cell remains at almost 99%, with a capacity retention of 91.4%.

Fast Ion Transport Interphase Integrated with Space Confinement Enabling High-Rate and Long-Lifespan Na Metal Batteries

Shuixin Xia,Wenxuan Fan,Zhen Hou,Chenrui Li,Zongyan Jiang,Junhe Yang,Jianfeng Mao,Shiyou Zheng

The practical application of sodium (Na) metal anode has been seriously hindered by the uncontrolled Na dendrite growth and severe volume expansion inducing short battery lifespan and safety concerns. Here, highly sodiophilic and ultrafine ZnS-modified carbon fibers have been rationally constructed as a scaffold to obviate these drawbacks. The in situ generated Na 2 S-reinforced fast ion transport interphase and the effective space confinement synergistically facilitate the fast sodium ion interfacial transfer and the homogeneous and dendrite-free Na deposition, thus enabling high-rate and dendrite-free Na metal anode. The modified Na metal demonstrates ultrahigh rate capability (15 mA cm −2 ) and ultralong cycling life (5300 cycles). Moreover, the Na|Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 (NVP) cell delivers ultrahigh rate capability (80 C) and extraordinarily ultralong lifespan cycling durability (2980 cycles). The Na|NVP pouch cell also exhibits an extraordinarily ultralong-term cycle life of over 1070 cycles with an extremely low capacity decay rate of 0.0088% per cycle at 10 C. This work provides a facile and efficient strategy to propel the Na metal anode towards practicability.

On-site hydrolytic H2 production by CaH2/(Al/Si) composites via Na+ bridging effect for fuel cell

Ali Hammad,Siyi Zou,Fandi Ning,Ghulam Nabi,Yuzhuo Jiang,Bin Tian,Wentao Huang,Muhammad Rashid,Shiqi Zhao,Xiaochun Zhou

Inorganic materials can solve transportable and on-site hydrolytic hydrogen generation issues. CaH 2 /(Al/Si) composites are preferable due to their notable chemical properties. However, these composites require pretreatments, an inert environment, and long hours of physical ball milling for high homogeneity and synergistic effects. CaH 2 also inhibits the hydrolysis reaction by forming its products on the Al/Si surface, which hinders the direct utilization of composites. This work represents the first investigation of NaH-CaH 2 (Al/Si) fuel composites, which greatly overcome these limitations and can be directly used for on-site hydrogen generation and proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells. The NaH-CaH 2 (Al/Si) fuel composites were prepared by using a straightforward mixing method with variable composition ratios, showing high H 2 yield and fuel cell (FC) performance. NaH addition provides the bridge effect, which opens up a new way to enable efficient hydrolysis and greatly enhances the hydrolysis activity of CaH 2 /(Al/Si) composites. The novel fuel composites (NaH-CaH 2 /Al) have extraordinary FC performance and a 0.42 W/cm 2 peak power density greater than commercial hydrogen generators. It provides high H 2 yield 84.4 % for NaH-CaH 2 /Al and 82 % for NaH-CaH 2 /Si compared to NaOH-CaH 2 (Al/Si), NaCl-CaH 2 (Al/Si), and KCl-CaH 2 (Al/Si) composites. The NaH bridge effect hinders the direct water contact and stops the formation of Ca(OH) 2 around Al/Si, which provides adequate pathways for the CaH 2 (Al/Si) hydrolysis. The impressive capabilities of novel fuel composites are anticipated to offer practical uses in fuel cells, automobile applications, and portable/on-board H 2 generation.

Tuning Nanopore Structure of Hard Carbon Anodes by in situ incorporation- removal to improve Na-ion storage

Xinyi Pan,Wangwang Xu,Anzheng Chang,Jia Yue,Tianshuo Yang,Wuhai Yang,Dong Wang,Faming Gao

Hard carbon, one of the most commercially promising anode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), faces challenges in balancing rate performance, initial cycle charge efficiency (ICE), and reversible capacity. To enhance specific capacity and achieve high ICE, it is essential to construct hard carbon with abundant sodium-active sites and a controllable graphitization degree. This work presents a comprehensive approach to microstructural regulation of hard carbon through in situ doping and subsequent removal, which introduces active sites and optimizes the microporous structure. It overcomes the limitations of traditional templating methods, such as excessive specific surface area, which leads to low initial coulombic efficiency and poor cycling performance. This method yields high reversible capacity (419.3 mAh g −1 @0.05   A   g −1 ), excellent ICE (95.88%), and outstanding cycling stability. This study presents a viable approach to enhancing the performance of porous hard carbon. It offers a rational design strategy for optimizing HC structures, improving sodium storage performance, and facilitating their practical applications.

K/Na Co-Doped Carbon Nitride: A Robust Luminescent Material with High Thermal Endurance and UV Durability

Jian Luo,Chenkai Jin,Juan Cai,Yan Lei,Juncheng Huang,Chao Fang,Lixin Song,Haining Na,Jin Zhu

Carbon nitride materials are promising for photocatalysis and optoelectronics owing to their earth-abundant composition and tunable electronic structure, yet they often suffer from limited charge separation and poor photothermal stability. However, achieving high-temperature luminescence retention together with long-term UV durability, especially in polymer-processable forms, remains challenging. Here, we introduce a dual-alkali co-doping concept (K/Na) that enables a carbon nitride phosphor with simultaneously improved thermal endurance and UV durability, and we further demonstrate its processability into transparent polymer composites. We report a potassium/sodium co-doped carbon nitride (CN–K/Na) synthesized by a solid-state route using 3-AT, NaOH, and KOH. Structural analyses indicate that K/Na incorporation modulates the local structure of the CN framework, which is consistent with synergistic regulation of defects and charge transport. The co-doped material shows a narrowed optical bandgap (2.23 eV), enhanced photoluminescence, and an increased TRPL lifetime (τ_avg ≈ 1.42 ns, from multi-exponential fitting), and significant thermal stability, retaining 90.8% emission at 475 K and ~75% at 625 K. Under extended UV exposure, the emission exhibits a non-monotonic evolution, reaching 1.7× of the initial intensity and maintaining 43% after 192 h, indicating notable optical durability. When incorporated into a polymer matrix, CN–K/Na effectively suppresses UV-induced degradation of PMMA, maintaining stable emission with minimal spectral drift. The improved UV durability of the composites is consistent with UV attenuation by the filler and reduced photodegradation of the polymer matrix. These results establish K/Na co-doping as a practical and scalable route to robust carbon nitride luminescent materials and UV-durable transparent composites for optoelectronic applications.

Scale-up Preparation of Na-Enriched Prussian White Cathode Assisted by Manganese Oxalate for Sodium-Ion Batteries

Jiayu Li,Haoxu Zhan,Bingjun Su,Yiqun Yao,Yiran He,Wu Zhang,Zeqiang Zhong,Lei Li,Dongyan Zhang,Hao Yang,Chao Li

Sodium manganese hexacyanoferrate, also called Prussian white (PW), has attracted much attention as a promising cathode material for Na-ion batteries due to its high-voltage platform and inexpensive elemental composition. However, their parasitic vacancies and water molecules often deteriorate the electrochemical performance. Proper regulation of such defects in scale-up preparation is still a challenge. In this work, PW was prepared via aqueous precipitation assisted by manganese oxalate in a 10 L reactor. High-quality Na2.32Mn[Fe(CN)6]0.95□0.05·1.97 H2O was obtained and exhibited a specific capacity of 148 mAh g–1. The phase transition from monoclinic to rhombohedral during long-term cycling for such an ultra-Na-rich cathode has been first reported. In addition, the vacuum drying temperature was further discussed, and 150 °C is more suitable for achieving the balance between dehydration and electrical properties.

PVDF–HFP@Nafion-based quasisolid polymer electrolyte for high migration number in working rechargeable Na–O2 batteries

Xin He,Youxuan Ni,Wenjiao Ma,Qiu Zhang,Zhenkun Hao,Yunpeng Hou,Haixia Li,Zhenhua Yan,Kai Zhang,Jun Chen

Rechargeable sodium-oxygen (Na–O2) battery is deemed as a promising high-energy storage device due to the abundant sodium resources and high theoretical energy density (1,108 Wh kg–1). A series of quasisolid electrolytes are constantly being designed to restrain the dendrites growth, the volatile and leaking risks of liquid electrolytes due to the open system of Na–O2 batteries. However, the ticklish problem about low operating current density for quasisolid electrolytes still hasn’t been conquered. Herein, we report a rechargeable Na–O2 battery with polyvinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene recombination Nafion (PVDF–HFP@Nafion) based quasisolid polymer electrolyte (QPE) and MXene-based Na anode with gradient sodiophilic structure (M-GSS/Na). QPE displays good flame resistance, locking liquid and hydrophobic properties. The introduction of Nafion can lead to a high Na+ migration number (tNa+ = 0.68) by blocking the motion of anion and promote the formation of NaF-rich solid electrolyte interphase, resulting in excellent cycling stability at relatively high current density under quasisolid environment. In the meantime, the M-GSS/Na anode exhibits excellent dendrite inhibition ability and cycling stability. Therefore, with the synergistic effect of QPE and M-GSS/Na, constructed Na–O2 batteries run more stably and exhibit a low potential gap (0.166 V) after an initial 80 cycles at 1,000 mA g–1 and 1,000 mAh g–1. This work provides the reference basis for building quasisolid state Na–O2 batteries with long-term cycling stability.

SnS2 Nanosheets with RGO Modification as High-Performance Anode Materials for Na-Ion and K-Ion Batteries

Leqiang Wu,Hengjia Shao,Chen Yang,Xiangmin Feng,Linxuan Han,Yanli Zhou,Wei Du,Xueqin Sun,Zhijun Xu,Xiaoyu Zhang,Fuyi Jiang,Caifu Dong

To date, the fabrication of advanced anode materials that can accommodate both Na+and K+storage is still very challenging. Herein, we developed a facile solvothermal and subsequent annealing process to synthesize SnS2/RGO composite, in which SnS2nanosheets are bonded on RGO, and investigated their potential as anodes for Na+and K+storage. When used as an anode in SIBs, the as-prepared SnS2/RGO displays preeminent performance (581 mAh g−1at 0.5 A g−1after 80 cycles), which is a significant improvement compared with pure SnS2. More encouragingly, SnS2/RGO also exhibits good cycling stability (130 mAh g−1at 0.3 A g−1after 300 cycles) and excellent rate capability (520.8 mAh g−1at 0.05 A g−1and 281.4 mAh g−1at 0.5 A g−1) when used as anode for PIBs. The well-engineered structure not only guarantees the fast electrode reaction kinetics, but also ensures superior pseudocapacitance contribution during repeated cycles, which has been proved by kinetic analysis.

Novel titanium vanadate with superior Na+ transport kinetics for rapid charging and low-temperature sodium ion batteries

Dan Lv,Liehao Wei,Cheng Wang,Mingyue Wang,Zhongchao Bai,Yameng Fan,Dongdong Wang,Nana Wang,Jian Yang

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) hold great promise for large-scale energy storage in the post-lithium-ion battery era due to their high rate performance and long lifespan, although their sluggish Na + transformation kinetics still require improvement. Encouraged by the excellent electrochemical performance of titanium-based anode materials, here, we present a novel titanium vanadate@carbon (TVO@C) material as anode for SIBs. Our TVO@C material is synthesized via a facile coprecipitation method, with the following annealing process in an acetylene atomosphere. The opened ion channel and the oxygen vacancies within TVO@C facilitate the diffusion of Na + ions, reducing their diffusion barrier. Thus, an ultrahigh rate of 100 A g −1 and long life of 10,000 cycles have been achieved. Furthermore, the TVO@C electrode exhibits stable performance, not only at room temperature, but also at temperatures as low as −20 °C. The TVO@C||Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 @C full cells have also achieved stable discharge/charge for 500 cycles. It is believed that this strategy provides new insight into the development of advanced electrodes and provides a new opportunity for constructing novel high rate electrodes.

A new sodium ferrous orthophosphate Na x Fe4(PO4)3 as anode materials for sodium-ion batteries

Zhang Hui,Zhao Yanming,Wen Mingming,Dong Youzhong,Fan Qinghua,Kuang Quan,Liu Huatao,Lian Xin

A new sodium ferrous orthophosphate Na x Fe 4 (PO 4 ) 3 (1.1 ≤  x  ≤ 1.2) with P 2 1 / n symmetry has been successfully synthesized via a solid-state reaction for the first time. The structure consists of FeO 5 pyramids, FeO 6 octahedron, and PO 4 tetrahedra which form large six-sided tunnels along \( \vec{b} \) direction and three- or four-sided tunnels running along \( \vec{a} \) direction. When evaluated as the anode materials for sodium-ion batteries, the first discharge and charge capacities of 553 and 264 mAh g −1 for Na 1.1 Fe 4 (PO 4 ) 3 /C and 583 and 315 mAh g −1 for Na 1.2 Fe 4 (PO 4 ) 3 /C, respectively, can be obtained at 10 mA g −1 current density. Compared to the Na 1.1 Fe 4 (PO 4 ) 3 /C, Na 1.2 Fe 4 (PO 4 ) 3 /C exhibits a better cycling performance, where the charge capacity of about 100 mAh g −1 can still be maintained after 15 cycles. The electrode kinetics are investigated further by the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy.
