The intrinsic performance of single atom catalysts (SACs) to electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction (ECRR) is limited due to the absence of synergistic active sites. Herein, Ni single atom (Ni SAs ) and Ni nanoparticles (Ni NPs ) are co-loaded on nitrogen-doped hollow carbon spheres (N-HCSs) by a one-step calcination method, which exhibits high CO selectivity in H-type cell with aqueous solution or an ionic liquid as electrolyte. Particularly, Ni SAs-NPs -N-HCSs demonstrate a CO selectivity of 98.98%, yielding an industrial level CO current density of 152.7 mA cm −2 in flow cell. In situ Raman spectroscopy and in situ infrared characterization technology confirm that *COOH and *CO are important intermediates in the ECRR process. Theoretical computations suggest that coexisting Ni NPs can reduce the energy barrier of *COOH, thereby improving the ECRR performance, indicating the synergistic effect between Ni SAs and Ni NPs in the ECRR process. Moreover, Ni SAs-NPs -N-HCSs is applied to the membrane electrode assembly system coupling the hydrazine oxidation reaction (HzOR), which can significantly reduce the voltage about 836 mV at 100 mA cm −2 .

This work focused on optimizing the synergistic effect between CeO 2 and Ni in CeO 2 modified Ni/MgAl 2 O 4 . Six catalysts for ethanol steam reforming (ESR), including NiCeMgAl, CeO 2 /NiMgAl, Ni/CeMgAl, Ni-CeO 2 /MgAl 2 O 4 , Ni/CeO 2 /MgAl 2 O 4 and CeO 2 /Ni/MgAl 2 O 4 , were synthesized by sol–gel and/or impregnation methods, which controlled the introduction order of Ce(NO 3 ) 3 . Ni/CeMgAl showed a satisfactory stability with 90.6 % of ethanol conversion after 100 h test, 66.9 % of H 2 concentration in product, and an excellent anti-coking ability with 0.72 mg c /(g cat ·h). The optimal catalytic performance of Ni/CeMgAl benefits from the unique distribution of components, which provides adequate Ni 0 active sites for C-C bonds scission, maintains a stable particle size of metallic Ni, and suppresses the side reactions and carbonization of intermediates on CeO 2 sites. This work illuminates the important of coordinating the ability of Ni and CeO 2 for ESR and presents a new insight into the design of low-cost and high-performance catalysts in practical applications.

Efficient, stable, and environmentally friendly electrocatalysts urgently need to be explored for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). A novel and facile nickel–selenium–dysprosium (Ni–Se–Dy) electrocatalyst was synthesized on Ni foam via simple and feasible one–step galvanostatic electrodeposition . The prepared Ni–Se–Dy electrodes showed excellent HER activity in alkaline medium with low overpotential values of 72 and 173 mV to deliver the current density values of 10 and 50 mA·cm −2 . Tafel slope value (119.72 mV·dec −1 ) for Ni–Se–Dy electrode in 1.0 M KOH indicated that the Ni–Se–Dy catalyst followed a Volmer–Heyrovsky mechanism, and the rate–determining step of this reaction was a Volmer step. Electrochemical test and scanning electron microscopy results showed that the excellent HER performance of Ni–Se–Dy electrode can be attributed to surface morphology , better intrinsic activity, and high conductivity.

The development of extremely active bifunctional non-noble electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is pivotal for water splitting but remains challenging. Herein, self-supported Ni–Fe–Sn electrocatalysts were fabricated on nickel foam (NF) through a simple and facile pulse electrodeposition process. Under optimal conditions, the prepared Ni–Fe–Sn electrocatalysts exhibited excellent bifunctional properties in alkaline medium and required ultralow overpotentials of only 27 and 201 mV for HER and OER, respectively, to reach the current density of 10 mA cm −2 . Importantly, the same Ni–Fe–Sn electrocatalyst can be assembled as the anode and the cathode in a two-electrode system. It demanded a fairly low applied voltage of 1.55, 1.72, and 1.87 V to produce 10, 50, and 100 mA cm −2 , respectively, and exhibited excellent long-term stability. The excellent electrocatalytic water splitting performance of the Ni–Fe–Sn film was mainly associated with its intrinsic catalytic activity derived from the modulation of the electronic structures among Ni, Fe, and Sn by using the appropriate atomic ratio of Ni: Fe: Sn.

Developing the robust non-precious metal bifunctional electrocatalyst is highly imperative for the hydrogen evolution from overall water splitting. Herein, a Ni foam (NF)-supported ternary Ni/Mo bimetallic complex (Ni/Mo-TEC@NF), hierarchically constructed by coupling the in-situ formed MoNi 4 alloys and Ni 2 Mo 3 O 8 with Ni 3 Mo 3 C on NF, has been developed through a facile method involving the in-situ hydrothermal growth of the Ni-Mo oxides/polydopamine (NiMoO x /PDA) complex on NF and a subsequent annealing in a reduction atmosphere. Synchronously, N and P atoms are co-doped into Ni/Mo-TEC during the annealing procedure using phosphomolybdic acid and PDA raw materials as P and N sources, respectively. The resultant N, P-Ni/Mo-TEC@NF shows outstanding electrocatalytic activities and tremendous stability for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), due to the multiple heterojunction effect-promoted electron transfer , the large number of exposed active sites, and the modulated electronic structure by the N and P co-doping. It only needs a low overpotential of 22 mV to afford the current density of 10 mA·cm −2 for HER in alkaline electrolyte . More importantly, as the anode and cathode, it requires only 1.59 and 1.65 V to achieve 50 and 100 mA·cm −2 for overall water splitting, respectively, comparable to the benchmark Pt/C@NF//RuO 2 @NF couple. This work could spur the search for economical and efficient electrodes by in situ constructing multiple bimetallic components on 3D conductive substrates for practical hydrogen generation.

The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) using earth-abundant noble-metal-free catalysts has gained substantial interest in electrocatalytic water splitting technologies, particularly in water-alkali electrolyzers. The development of highly-efficiency and durable inexpensive electrocatalysts to accelerate the kinetics of HER is still a formidable challenge. In this study, nickel–iron (Ni–Fe) electrocatalyst directly grown on backbones of Ni foam (NF) substrate was facile prepared via one-step potentiostatic electrodeposition method. The obtained Ni–Fe electrocatalyst exhibits a film-like structure. Owing to high electrical conductivity and composition optimization, the synthesized Ni–Fe electrocatalyst with Ni/Fe atomic ratio of c.a. 65:35 possesses an attractive electrocatalytic activity with low overpotentials of 142, 205, and 239 mV at 10, 50, and 100 mA·cm −2 in alkaline electrolyte , respectively.

Ni phosphides have recently attracted considerable attention as promising catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and are generally promoted by Fe incorporation. However, the catalytic performance of nickel phosphide still does not meet the desired expectations. Additionally, the catalytic activity of iron (Fe) is insignificant and can be disregarded. In this study, we used C 3 N 4 as a carbon substrate to modulate the 3 d electron configurations and adsorption properties of Ni and Fe. Density functional theory (DFT) analysis reveals that the catalytic performance of Ni sites can be enhanced by utilizing the C 3 N 4 substrate. Surprisingly, the Fe sites can also be activated to catalyze OER through a direct O 2 mechanism and the catalytic activity of Fe is found to surpass that of Ni. As a result, the FeNi-C 3 N 4 -P catalyst demonstrated remarkable catalytic performance for OER. It exhibited a Tafel slope of 40.4 mV dec −1 , an overpotential of 235 mV at 100 mA cm −2 , and exhibited exceptional stability. This study highlights the activation of Fe and the enhancement of Ni by utilizing nitrogen-containing carbon substrates. This strategy offers promising prospects for the development of efficient Ni/Fe-based OER catalysts.

Developing Ni-based catalysts with high activity and stability in low-temperature methanation is necessary due to their sintering and coking at high temperatures. Here, we report our developed novel Ni-Zr-Al catalysts derived from Ni-Zr-Al ternary hydrotalcites synthesized by a hydrothermal process, followed by a reduction in hydrogen. Comparing with the Ni-Al catalyst derived from Ni-Al hydrotalcite and the commercial Ni-based catalyst, the Ni-Zr-Al catalysts show a remarkably higher low-temperature activity (210−270 °C) in CO 2 methanation. Both the experimental and theoretical calculations confirmed the introduction of Zr into the Ni-Al binary hydrotalcite could generate synergetic effects between Ni and ZrO 2 , resulting in more surface oxygen vacancies, basic sites, and abundant mesopores . In-situ DRIFTS analysis showed the CO 2 methanation to CH 4 follows the intermediate formate route. This work provides a new theoretical understanding of CO 2 activation and methanation, and a practical way to address the existing problem for Ni-based catalysts.

Faced with the challenge of high energy ablation problems, especially for laser ablation , effective energy dissipation protective materials fabricate by efficient preparation method is a feasible solution. The Ni-graphite/SiO 2 coatings with different Ni content were prepared by plasma spraying method with optimized plasma spraying parameters. All coatings are pure without oxidation and dense. Their ablation behaviors were investigated by high power continuous wave laser. The results indicate that the Ni-graphite/SiO 2 coating with appropriate Ni content could realize the purpose of energy consumption by endothermal reaction of graphite/SiO 2 and reflection improvement. High Ni content will block the occurrence of endothermal reaction of graphite/SiO 2 and increase the heat diffusion to interior part of coating, which can make the ablation situation of coating more serious.

Zero-valent iron (ZVI), Fe 2+ and H 2 are possible electron donors in the reduction of Cr(VI) by nanoscale ZVI (n-ZVI). However, it is often ambiguous about the roles of these electron donors in the reductive removal of Cr(VI) from groundwater and wastewater. This study investigated the action mechanisms of Fe and Ni in Cr(VI) reduction by Fe/Ni nanoparticles (n-Fe/Ni). Among the three possible reduction mechanisms of ZVI, direct electron transfer from ZVI and its corrosion product, Fe 2+ , were confirmed to be responsible for the reduction removal of Cr(VI). H 2 , another product of ZVI corrosion, was found incapable of reducing Cr(VI). In addition, the secondary metal Ni in n-Fe/Ni was found to facilitate the direct electron transfer from ZVI owing to its ability to inhibit the passivation of ZVI and to enhance the production of Fe 2+ due to the formation of Fe Ni galvanic cells . The results of characterizations on n-Fe/Ni before and after the reaction with Cr(VI) demonstrated that Cr(VI) was reduced to Cr(III), which existed as FeCr 2 O 4 precipitates on the surface of n-Fe/Ni, resulting in effective sequestration of Cr(VI). These findings are important for understanding the main mechanisms of bimetallic nanoparticles or nanomaterials for reductive immobilization of Cr(VI), and may guide further ZVI-based technology development for remediation of contaminated water or soil with redox-active contaminants.

Herein, we fabricated a series of bimetallic Pt-Ni catalysts supported on mesoporous silica nanorods ( m SNR, specific BET surface area of 1802 m 2 g −1 ) to study the effect of Ni/Pt ratio on the product selectivity in CO 2 hydrogenation. Both monometallic Pt/ m SNR and Ni 50 Pt 50 / m SNR catalysts revealed negligible methane selectivity. However, methane became the major product only when increasing the Ni/Pt ratio up to 9. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and inductively coupled plasma (ICP) characterizations showed that the Pt/Ni ratio on the catalyst surface was appreciably higher than the bulk composition, suggesting the enrichment of Pt on the surface ( e.g. , Pt/Ni of 61/39 for Ni 50 Pt 50 / m SNR catalyst). The Pt/Ni ratio was crucial in determining the CH 4 /CO selectivity, and the addition of a tiny amount of Pt could improve the catalytic performance and stability of Ni/ m SNR. Among the different catalysts, Ni 98 Pt 2 / m SNR showed the best CO 2 conversion (59%) and CH 4 selectivity (96%) at 400 °C, 0.1 MPa, 9600 mL h −1 g cat −1 , and H 2 /CO 2 of 3. In-situ DRIFTS and temperature-programmed surface experiments suggested that the dissociated adsorption of CO 2 on the Pt site led to CO*, but the strongly adsorbed CO* cannot be further hydrogenated to CH 4 over the Pt site. In contrast, CO* could be further hydrogenated into CH 4 via CH x O* intermediates on adjacent Ni sites.
