Fabrication of core–shell Ag@pDA@HAp nanoparticles with the ability for controlled release of Ag+ and superior hemocompatibility

Keling Chen,Kenan Xie,Qin Long,Lijun Deng,Zhiqiang Fu,Huanhuan Xiao,Lu Xie

Silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) are a type of crucial bactericide due to their excellent antibacterial properties. However, the application of Ag-NPs in clinics and in bone tissue engineering is hampered because of their unabiding antibacterial efficacy and undesirable biological properties such as cytotoxicity and inferior hemocompatibility. In this study, Ag-NPs were modified with polydopamine (pDA) and hydroxyapatite (HAp) to prepare novel and multifunctional core (Ag-NPs)–shell (pDA)–shell (HAp) nanoparticles (Ag@pDA@HAp-NPs). The Ag+ release rate was reduced by about 80% on the first day, and then Ag+ was slowly released, which implied that the core–shell Ag@pDA@HAp-NPs could effectively control the release of Ag+. The core–shell Ag@pDA@HAp-NPs could obviously inhibit the growth of E. coli and S. aureus, and the bactericide rate of the Ag@pDA@HAp-NPs was up to 99.99% after being cultured for 24 h. Furthermore, the synthesized Ag@pDA@HAp-NPs exhibited superior hemocompatibility due to the favorable blood compatibility of the pDA coating and HAp shell as well as the controlled release of Ag+. Thus, the core–shell Ag@pDA@HAp-NPs, with the ability for the controlled release of Ag+ and superior hemocompatibility, are promising for reducing cytotoxicity and achieving long-term antibacterial properties, and could have potential applications in clinics and in bone tissue engineering.

Determination of caffeoylquinic acid derivatives in Azolla imbricata by chitosan-based matrix solid-phase dispersion coupled with HPLC–PDA

Weilin Wu,Wenqi Qian,Haitian Hao,Yun kang,Yaqin Wang,Yuanrong Deng,Chengjie Ni,Jianming Huang,Weiyu Weng

Five main components of Azolla imbricata were isolated and identified as caffeoylquinic acid derivatives, four of which were isolated from this species for the first time. The five compounds exhibited strong antioxidant activities and were used as chemical markers for quantitative analysis. A chitosan-based matrix solid-phase dispersion (MSPD) extraction coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was developed for the determination of the five analytes in A. imbricata. The optimal conditions for the chitosan-based MSPD extraction were as follows: low viscosity chitosan HL-1 as the dispersant, sample-to-dispersant mass ratio of 1:1, 10 mL of a methanol-sulfuric acid aqueous solution (0.2 M) (7:3, v/v) as the elution solvent, and a grinding time of 1 min. Compared with ultrasonic assisted extraction (UAE), the chitosan-based MSPD extraction exhibited higher extraction efficiency, consumed less solvent and time, and provided a cleaner extract. Compared with C 18 -based MSPD, the developed method was less expensive and more environmentally-friendly. The validated MSPD–HPLC method was efficient, reliable, and applicable to the quantification of caffeoylquinic acids in A. imbricata .

An Electrochemical Sensor for Determination of Vitamin B2 and B6 Based on AuNPs@PDA-RGO Modified Glassy Carbon Electrode

Pengfei Li,Zhenping Liu,Zhibin Yan,Xin Wang,Eser Metin Akinoglu,Mingliang Jin,Guofu Zhou,Lingling Shui

Insufficient or excessive consumption of Vitamin B2 (Vit B2) and Vitamin B6 (Vit B6) can cause harmful effects on human health conditions, it is therefore very important to control their content in supplements and food products. In this work, we report on a simple, sensitive and selective electrochemical sensor based on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) on glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified by a hybrid of polydopamine and reduced graphene (PDA-RGO), for determination of Vit B2 and Vit B6. The hybrid nanomaterial comprising PDA-RGO supported AuNPs is constructed through a one-step GCE modification process for electrochemical quantification of Vit B2 and Vit B6 in pharmaceutical formulations. Cyclic voltammetry result reveals that the effective response to Vit B2 and Vit B6 is according to the high electrical conductivity of AuNPs and the large surface area of PDA-RGO. Meanwhile, the sensor modified with a composite film shows a synergistic effect for catalyzing the analytes. Under optimized experimental conditions, these sensors show wide linear ranges of 0.02−60.0 μM and 0.03−600.0 μM, with the detection limits (LODs) of 0.0096 μM and 0.025 μM for Vit B2 and Vit B6, respectively. Additionally, the constructed sensors have been applied for quantifying Vit B2 and Vit B6 in pharmaceutical formulations. Such an effective electrochemical platform could be potentially applied for analyzing various components for therapeutic drug monitoring.

Improve the Thermal Conductivity, Insulation Performance and Mechanical Properties of Silicone Rubber by Constructing EG-PDA-Cu Hybrid Nanoparticles

Xingrong Liu,Fan Xia,Dietmar Auhl

In this study, a simple and environmentally benign method was developed to synthesize expanded graphite-polydopamine-copper (EG-PDA-Cu) hybrid nanoparticles. The procedure involved first modifying EG via a mussel-inspired technique to deposit a polydopamine coating, after which Cu 2+ ions were reduced to immobilize copper nanoparticles onto the EG-PDA substrate. The as-synthesized EG-PDA-Cu nanoparticles were subsequently blended into a silicone rubber matrix (VMQ) to form elastomeric composites. Owing to the synergistic contribution of Cu and EG, the 10 wt% EG-PDA-Cu/VMQ composite achieved a thermal conductivity of 1.375 W m −1 K −1 , representing a 7.63-fold enhancement over pristine VMQ (0.18 W m −1 K −1 ). Furthermore, the composites exhibited outstanding electromechanical and mechanical performance. This approach holds significant potential for fabricating high-thermal-conductivity dielectric materials suitable for thermal management in electronic packaging. In Situ Growth of PDA Layer on PEI Film: Enhanced Dielectric Energy Storage Performance and Its High-Temperature Limitation

Weiwei Cui,Yajuan Hou,Xiangwen Peng,Wenshuang Liang,Xin Chen,Xinyu Niu,Wei Deng

To improve the insulation and energy-storage performance of polyetherimide (PEI) films, surface-modified PEI/polydopamine (PDA) films were fabricated via in situ polymerization of dopamine. This study explores the influence of the PDA layer on the wide-temperature dielectric and energy-storage properties of PEI. The self-growth process of the PDA layer promotes the rearrangement of PEI molecular chains and enhances the films' mechanical properties. Its Coulomb blockade characteristics effectively suppress the injection of electrode carriers and improve the breakdown strength. The modified films present enhanced room-temperature performance. The breakdown strength reaches 647.2 kV/mm, which is 64% higher than that of pure PEI films. The discharge energy density ( U d ) reaches 9.51 J/cm 3 , 326% higher than that of pure PEI films. The corona resistance time is extended to 2.3 times that of pure PEI films. At 150°C, the dielectric loss at 1 kHz increases from 0.0095 to 0.019. The film maintains U d of 2.54 J/cm 3 but shows discharge efficiency of only 34.2%. This study clarifies the enhancement of the PDA layer on the room-temperature performance of PEI films and inherent limitations in high-temperature energy storage. It provides an important experimental basis for the design of PEI films modified for wide-temperature energy storage.

Fabrication of a self-healing hydrophobic ODA@(PDA@(PMO@ODA))/ epoxy resin coating and its long-term protection performance

Yuhua Dong,Yuqin Sun,Jiaqi Yu,Chunmeng Huang,Yutong Xie

Successfully constructed multi-level nano-spheres of ODA@PDA@PMO@ODA with 155° of WCA. • Mechanical grinding temporarily enhances hydrophobicity. • Mechanical grinding damages the long-term barrier performance of the coating. This study aims to simultaneously enhance the hydrophobicity and mechanical durability of coatings through a hierarchical structure design. Periodic mesoporous organosilica (PMO) particles were first encapsulated with octadecylamine (ODA) via a facile one-pot synthesis. Subsequently, a polydopamine (PDA) layer was deposited on the surface, followed by further grafting of ODA, yielding a hierarchical papillary microstructure superhydrophobic quaternary nanoparticles designated as ODA@PDA@PMO@ODA. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) indicated a PDA encapsulation rate of 15% and an ODA grafting rate of 12%. Epoxy resin coatings incorporated with these nanoparticles exhibited water-repellent properties, demonstrating a static water contact angle (WCA) greater than 100°. The effects of mechanical grinding and thermal self-healing on the protection performance of the coatings were investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Investigation into the performance evolution during the mechanical grinding-self-healing process showed that while grinding temporarily increased surface roughness and hydrophobicity, the introduced macroscopic defects acted as channels for corrosive media penetration, significantly compromising the long-term barrier properties. However, the healing process via heating partially restored performance of the coating, yielding better protection than the unhealed ground coating. Compared with the ground coating, the non-ground intact coating surface exhibits more outstanding and long-lasting protection performance, maintaining a single capacitive arc in Nyquist plots and a high impedance modulus of 10¹⁰ Ω·cm² throughout 60 days of immersion. This exceptional long-term stability is attributed to the synergistic effect of the inherent hydrophobicity of coating and the corrosion inhibition provided by ODA. This work underscores the critical role of surface integrity in the long-term durability of coatings and provides new strategies and a theoretical basis for developing intelligent protective coatings with both high hydrophobicity and high reliability. Harnessing the photothermal effect of PDA-mediated plasmon Ag NPs to activate fluorinated BiVO4 for enhanced solar water oxidation

Nannan Chen,Lianqing Yu,Chong Liu,Zhe Li,Xiaohan Jin,Yaping Zhang,Haifeng Zhu

The efficiency of solar-driven water splitting has long been constrained by the poor utilization of the full-spectrum solar energy by semiconductors. This study leverages the localized photothermal effect of polydopamine (PDA)-mediated plasmonic Ag nanoparticles (NPs) to activate small-polaron hopping conduction in fluorinated BiVO 4 . This activation enhances light absorption and photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance. Experimental evidence indicates that fluorination optimizes both bulk properties and surface wettability. Concurrently, the PDA acts as a multifunctional interfacial layer, ensuring robust adhesion of Ag NPs and serving as an effective hole-transport medium. The synergistic photothermal effect of the intrinsic broadband absorption from PDA and the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) from Ag NPs endows the photoanode with a photocurrent density of 4.96 mA cm −2 at 1.23 V RHE , photo-stability exceeding 10 h, and enhanced light-harvesting capability. Further mechanistic studies unveil that fluorination induces the elongation of local chemical bonds, facilitating reducing the reaction energy barrier. Notably, the loading of PDA@Ag photothermal layer introduces valence band tail states, which effectively narrow the bandgap and accelerate hole transfer. This work offers a novel paradigm for pioneering utilization of photothermal materials to convert thermal energy dissipation into a valuable resource for enhancing PEC performance.

Preparation of a SiO2@PDA/CS Coated Stainless Steel Mesh with Superhydrophilicity and Underwater Superoleophobicity for Oil–Water Separation

Zhuangzhuang Zhang,Lingling Ma,Yang Shao,Diandou Xu,Min Luo

To tackle the environmental challenges associated with industrial oily wastewater discharges and recurrent marine oil spill incidents, developing high-efficiency oil–water separation technologies represents a pressing environmental challenge. This research presents a novel design approach comprising the deposition of a stable SiO2anchoring layer followed by the fabrication of a PDA/CS crosslinked coating, thereby achieving successful construction of a superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic (SH/UWSO) coating on stainless steel meshes (SSM). In the first step, SiO2microspheres were deposited via vapor deposition to create a micro-rough surface architecture. Subsequently, a dopamine/chitosan (DA/CS) reaction solution was introduced to form a Polydopamine/chitosan (PDA/CS) coating, yielding a SiO2@PDA/CS-SSM separation membrane. The resulting membrane exhibited separation efficiencies surpassing 99% for various oil–water mixtures, achieving a flux of 1.24 × 105L·m−2·h−1in petroleum ether systems. Notably, the membrane maintained high efficiency and structural stability even after 25 separation cycles, immersion in strong acid and base solutions for 72 h, and 100 abrasion tests. The rational design of the anchoring and crosslinking layers endows SiO2@PDA/CS-SSM with high efficiency and stability, making it an effective oil–water separation material.

PDA@MnOx nanozyme-engineered mesenchymal stem cells for severe acute pancreatitis therapy via modulation of ROS-inflammation-microbiota homeostasis

Zhao Zinan,Mutailipu Muladili,Mei Tianxiao,Cui Ran,Wang Yongkun,Liu Fuguo,Dong Chunxiu,Jia Wenwen,Liu Zhongmin,Chen Bo,Le Wenjun,Hu Yihui

Severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) is a life-threatening inflammatory disorder with an approximate mortality rate of 40%. Current therapeutic approaches fail to address its complex pathological microenvironment, necessitating novel synergistic strategies. Although mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) exhibit therapeutic potential, their efficacy is significantly compromised by SAP-associated oxidative stress, hyperinflammation, and gut dysbiosis. Herein, we engineered MSCs with antioxidant nanozyme PDA@MnO x , named PDA@MnO x -MSCs ( Abbr. E-MSCs), to establish a regulatory network for SAP therapy. The PDA@MnO x nanozymes not only scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS) to protect MSCs from oxidative damage but also enable in vivo T 1 -weighted MRI tracking. E-MSCs demonstrated enhanced anti-inflammatory effects, evidenced by reduced levels of TNF-ɑ and IL-6, and restored gut microbiota homeostasis, characterized by increased Bacteroidetes abundance. This further alleviated pancreatic necrosis and systemic inflammation. Notably, the synergistic interaction among PDA@MnO x nanozymes, MSCs, and the pathological microenvironment restored ROS-inflammation-microbiota homeostasis, significantly improving SAP outcomes. This study provides a multifunctional strategy integrating therapeutic efficacy, in vivo tracking, and gut microbiota modulation for SAP treatment. Graphical

Synergistically enhanced NF/CNTs@ PDA/PEG composite phase change materials for high-efficiency solar-thermal energy storage and conversion

Youchong Hu,Yaoqi Huang,Xiaopeng Liu,Meng Fu,Shuai Luo,Yuanyuan Li,Xiaomin Cheng

In order to solve the low thermal conductivity and leakage challenges of phase change materials (PCMs), a high-performance composite phase change material (CPCM) by integrating nickel foam (NF), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and polydopamine (PDA) is developed. A three-dimensional (3D) porous NF/CNTs@PDA framework was constructed through oxidative self-polymerization of PDA on NF surfaces, followed by ultrasonic-assisted CNTs impregnation. CNTs-NF interfacial bonding was strengthened and interfacial thermal resistance was reduced by the PDA coating, as demonstrated in experimental results, leading to enhanced thermal conductivity. Light absorption and heat conduction were further optimized by CNTs. The optimized CPNF-9/PEG composite exhibited a thermal conductivity of 0.899 W m −1  K −1 , representing an 565.93 % enhancement over pure PEG (0.135 W m −1  K −1 ). The melting and crystallization enthalpies of the material were 121.13 J g −1 and 113.44 J g −1 respectively, and solar-thermal tests indicated a 95.37 % conversion efficiency. After 200 thermal cycles, the composite maintained stable phase change latent heat (loss rate <3 %) and structural integrity, indicating excellent cyclic durability. Furthermore, leakage resistance tests at 80 °C revealed minimal mass loss (2 % over 100 min), highlighting its suitability for high-temperature applications. The work provides a novel strategy for designing efficient solar-thermal energy storage systems, with potential applications in solar-thermal management and renewable energy conversion technologies.

A PDA@ZIF-8-Incorporated PMIA TFN-FO Membrane for Seawater Desalination: Improving Water Flux and Anti-Fouling Performance

Yu Ma,Rui Jia,Zhen-Liang Xu,Aida Aibulatova,Xiao-Gang Jin,Yin-Xin Fang,Ming-Xiao Zhang,Sun-Jie Xu

Forward osmosis (FO) technology, known for its minimal energy requirements, excellent resistance to fouling, and significant commercial potential, shows enormous promise in the development of sustainable technologies, especially with regard to seawater desalination and wastewater. In this study, we improved the performance of the FO membrane in terms of its mechanical strength and hydrophilic properties. Generally, the water flux ( J w ) of polyisophenylbenzamide (PMIA) thin-film composite (TFC)-FO membranes is still inadequate for industrial applications. Here, hydrophilic polydopamine (PDA)@ zeolitic imidazolate frameworks-8 (ZIF-8) nanomaterials and their integration into PMIA membranes using the interfacial polymerization (IP) method were investigated. The impact of PDA@ZIF-8 on membrane performance in both pressure-retarded osmosis (PRO) and forward osmosis (FO) modes was analyzed. The durability and fouling resistance of these membranes were evaluated over the long term. When the amount of ZIF-8@PDA incorporated in the membrane reached 0.05 wt% in the aqueous phase in the IP reaction, the J w values for the PRO mode and FO mode were 12.09 LMH and 11.10 LMH, respectively. The reverse salt flux ( J s )/J w values for both modes decreased from 0.75 and 0.80 to 0.33 and 0.35, respectively. At the same time, the PRO and FO modes’ properties were stable in a 15 h test. The incorporation of PDA@ZIF-8 facilitated the formation of water channels within the nanoparticle pores. Furthermore, the J s / J w ratio decreased significantly, and the FO membranes containing PDA@ZIF-8 exhibited high flux recovery rates and superior resistance to membrane fouling. Therefore, PDA@ZIF-8-modified FO membranes have the potential for use in industrial applications in seawater desalination.

Regulable preparation of PDA-integrated silk fibroin/polyvinyl alcohol composite hydrogels with interpenetrating network for NIR-triggered drug release

Chenyuan Guo,Chunqing Niu,Yushan Li,Jinhua He,Jian Shi,Yiyu Wang,Kai Zhao

The modulation of structural and mechanical properties through construction of interpenetrating (IPN) hydrogels offers significant potential for expanding their applications as drug carriers. In this study, a silk fibroin (SF)/Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/polydopamine particles (PDA) hydrogel with IPN structure for near-infrared (NIR)-responsive controlled release of drugs were prepared by combining enzyme crosslinking with freeze–thaw cycles treatment. Compared with SF/PVA hydrogels prepared solely by enzyme crosslinking, the IPN hydrogels exhibited enhanced stability, a more ordered pore structure, and improved mechanical property. The hydrogels withstood 90 % of compressive deformation without breaking, and the maximum tensile strain at break reached 140.07 %. Moreover, the mechanical properties of the hydrogels were tunable by adjusting the ratio and concentration of SF and PVA. The incorporation of PDA particles into the IPN SF/PVA hydrogel endowed the material with excellent NIR responsiveness. Upon 808 nm NIR irradiation for 10 min, the temperature increased by 19.8°C, with stable photothermal conversion performance maintained over three irradiation cycles. In addition, SF/PVA/PDA hydrogels exhibited good biocompatibility and NIR-responsive drug release capability. These findings highlight the potential of this SF/PVA/PDA hydrogel as a promising material for drug-controlled release applications.
