Superhydrophobic coating can be widely used in many fields because it is not easily wetted by water like lotus leaves. However, most of superhydrophobic coating is difficult to withstand abrasion attack. Herein, hollow SiO 2 /PAA-b-PS Janus microspheres were synthesized via emulsion interfacial synthesis method using amphiphilic block copolymer of polyacrylic acid block polystyrene (PAA-b-PS) and hollow NH 2 -SiO 2 microspheres as raw materials in this paper. Because the hemisphere grafting organic polymer chain was hydrophobic and the other hemisphere was hydrophilic and contained amino groups, hollow SiO 2 /PAA-b-PS Janus microspheres exhibited amphiphilic and asymmetrical nature, which was a typical inorganic/polymer Janus microspheres. Robust superhydrophobic coating was facilely achieved using hollow SiO 2 /PAA-b-PS Janus microspheres on polyurethane pretreated substrate like leather and fabric. Robust superhydrophobic coating after 90 sandpaper abrasion cycles still retained excellent superhydrophobicity. As expected, robust superhydrophobic coating had prominent self-cleaning property against different pollutants and was capable to separate a variety of oil–water mixtures with ultrahigh separation efficiency. The separation efficiency of robust superhydrophobic coating for oil–water mixture was maintained above 98% even after 40 separation cycles. In total, robust superhydrophobic coating constructed by hollow SiO 2 /PAA-b-PS Janus microspheres possesses distinguished superhydrophobicity, abrasion resistance, self-cleaning, oil–water separation capacity and universality, which shows a promising application in multifunctional coating.

In this study, we developed a flexible and transparent silver/polystyrene/polydimethylsiloxane (Ag/PS/PDMS) substrate with both high density of hot spots and satisfactory uniformity using a cost-effective approach. Via template-guided self-assembly, PS beads were arranged regularly in nanobowls of a square array on PDMS, whose surface structure was transferred from a commercial complementary metal oxide semiconductor chip. Roughness was introduced onto the PS bead surface by nitrogen plasma treatment, followed by sputtering of Ag which generated many hot spots. Differential roughness on the PS bead surface greatly influenced the morphology of the Ag/PS/PDMS substrate. A meat-ball like surface structure was formed with a plasma etching time of 5 min, whose growth mechanism was proposed based on the scanning electron microscope analysis. The high sensitivity and desirable uniformity of the meat-ball like Ag/PS/PDMS substrate were demonstrated by using crystal violet as a Raman reporter, exhibiting an enhancement factor of 2.7 × 107 and a relative standard deviation of 5.04%. Thiram of a lower concentration than the maximum residue limit on the cucumber surface could easily be detected in situ by the proposed substrate, demonstrating its great potential for in-situ food safety analysis.

Ultraviolet/persulfate (UV/PS) and Ultraviolet/hydrogen peroxide (UV/H 2 O 2 ) have attracted much attention in recent years as advanced oxidation processes for water treatment. However, it is not all clear how these two methods affect the formation of cyanogen chloride (CNCl) in the subsequent water chlorination process. In this study, it was found that both UV/H 2 O 2 and UV/PS pre-oxidation promoted the formation of CNCl in six actual water samples collected from urban rivers. Glycine, uric acid, arginine and histidine were investigated as the model compounds to explore the effects of different methods on the production of CNCl. The results showed that compared with chlorination alone, pre-oxidation by UV/H 2 O 2 and UV/PS can reduce the production of CNCl for glycine and uric acid by up to 95% during post-chlorination process. However, they can greatly promote the formation of CNCl for arginine and histidine by up to 120-fold. In a more detailed investigation, pre-oxidation of histidine formed highly reactive intermediates to chlorine, leading to increased CNCl formation and chlorine consumption. The results showed that the precursors of CNCl was altered after pre-oxidation, and need to be re-evaluated.

To collect permeability data and establish its database of fertilizer nutrients and water vapor through different polymer membranes for the development of polymer-coated fertilizer, the permeabilities of N-, P-, and K-nutrient from saturated aqueous of urea, NaH2PO4 and KCl solution and the permeability of water vapor through the membranes of poly lactic acid (PLA), its blends with polystyrene (PS), and its composites with humic acid (HA) particles were determined experimentally at the temperatures of 288, 298, and 308 K, respectively. The effects of the addition of PS and HA particles, temperature, and coating thickness on the permeability of fertilizer nutrient and water vapor were investigated. It was found that the addition of PS and HA increased the permeability for both the fertilizer nutrients and water vapor. The increase in temperature raised the permeability of N-, P-, and K-nutrient while decrease the permeability of water vapor in the range studied.

The frequent occurrence of toxin-producing cyanobacteria blooms driven by anthropogenic eutrophication has become a major threat to aquaculture ecosystems worldwide. In this study, the behavior of M. aeruginosa cells during flocs storage period of 6 days was first investigated after pre-oxidation and coagulation of Fe 2+ /PS. Fe 2+ /PS achieved a superior removal efficiency of 90.7% for OD 680 and 90.4% for chl-a. The contents of extracellular MCs in the pre-oxidation and coagulation system were significantly ( P < 0.05) lower than those in the control. A significant ( P < 0.05) difference in intracellular protein between the control and the coagulated systems was observed. Three-dimensional fluorescence excitation emission matrix (EEM) was employed to investigate the variations in extracellular organic matter (EOM) during flocs storage. The results indicated the presence of four peaks, representing protein-like substances, intermediate dissolved microbial metabolites, fulvic and humic-like compounds in the Fe 2+ /PS process. And the intensities of four peaks were all decreased in the Fe 2+ /PS system compared to those in the control. A low level of accumulated residual Fe of 0.28 mg/L was observed without posing potential environmental risk. The results showed that the M. aeruginosa cells were under stressful conditions after 3-d storage due to the decomposition of extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) and the insufficient supply of nutrients. However, SEM results indicated that no significant alteration in cell morphology was observed. Therefore, with high removal of M. aeruginosa , low MCs concentrations, and trivial cell damage, the Fe 2+ /PS preoxidation-coagulation was proved to be an environmental-friendly method for cyanobacteria removal without yielding serious secondary pollution. This work will contribute to better understanding and managing the cyanobacteria-laden aquaculture water after pre-oxidation and coagulation.

Design and preparation of highly active and stable supported palladium catalysts have garnered increased attention for their easy separation and reusability. Herein, MCM-41 mesoporous materials functionalized by four different amino functional groups were synthesized by using four commercially available siloxanes and then used to support palladium catalysts. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) was used to analyze the chemical structures of functionalized MCM-41 supports. The thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and element analysis (EA) were employed to determine the grafting densities of functional groups on MCM-41 supports. The mesoporous structures of functionalized MCM-41 supports and dispersion of palladium species were characterized by high resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD). A study of the materials using positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) reveals the different ortho-positronium ( o -Ps) annihilation properties of the supported palladium species on the four supports. Meanwhile, the catalytic activities of supported palladium species on the four supports were evaluated by the Heck reactions of iodobenzene with n-butyl acrylate. At last, the annihilation properties of the supported palladium species on the four supports were successfully correlated with their catalytic activities. The result suggests a facile method to determine and predict the catalytic activities of supported palladium species by using PALS, which may hold great potential in the preparation of rationally designed and highly active supported palladium catalysts.

Reliable quantification by surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) highly depends on the development of a reproducible substrate with excellent anti-interference capability. In this work, an intrinsic internal standard (IS) SERS substrate based on a diblock copolymer, polystyrene-block-poly-4-vinylpyridine (PS-b-P4VP), as a template was developed by a modified block copolymer lithography (BCL) technique of reserving the diblock copolymer template. This substrate generated a stable vibration peak at 1066 cm−1 attributed to poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP) which could be used as an intrinsic IS for precise SERS quantification. A series of characterization results showed that the diblock copolymer template endowed this substrate with homogeneous distribution of Au nanoparticles, excellent stability and reproducibility. A minor relative standard deviation (RSDs) of SERS responses at 1066 cm−1 was measured and calculated to be 4.3% from ten different substrates in the same batch, which suggested good substrate-to-substrate reproducibility of this substrate. Finally, this intrinsic IS substrate was successfully applied for the rapid quantification of a trace banned dye, chrysoidine, in food samples with complicated matrices by SERS. It was proved that chrysoidine could be found and quantified to be 0.50 and 0.41 mg L−1 in a positive dried bean curd stick and chilli powder sample respectively with good recoveries by this substrate coupled with SERS. The development of intrinsic IS substrates would benefit rapid and accurate quantification of trace targets in complex samples coupled with SERS analysis.

The hybrid structures of polystyrene- b -poly(ethylene oxide) (PS- b -PEO) block copolymer and inorganic nanoparticles with good stability and biocompatibility have potential applications in drug delivery and bioimaging. Spherical co-assemblies of PS 120 - b -PEO 318 and oleylamine-capped CdS quantum dots (QDs) are produced successfully in this work by adding water to a mixed common solvent, such as N , N -dimethylmethanamide (DMF)/chloroform, DMF/tetrahydrofuran (THF), or DMF/toluene. The energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectrum indicates that QDs are located at the interface between the core and shell of the spherical co-assemblies. The co-assembly process during water addition is traced by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and turbidity measurement. Spherical co-assemblies are formed through budding from bilayers of the block copolymer and QDs. The morphology of the co-assemblies is related to the miscibility of the QD-dispersing solvents with water and the morphology changes from a spherical to a vesicle-like structure with DMF/toluene. Increasing THF content in the mixed solvent causes morphological transitions from spherical co-assemblies to multi-branched cylinders and micelles where QDs are located in the central core. Increasing chloroform content yields vesicle-like structures with protruding rods on the surface. The mechanism of the morphological transitions is also discussed in detail.

Cross-linked PS-DVB/Fe3O4 microspheres (PFM-3) have been successfully synthesized by a new magnetic colloid swelling polymerization method and further functioned by alternatively using methylamine and 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl as monomers to build a branching polymer with quaternary ammonium groups. The characterization of PFM has been performed by XRD, FT-IR, SEM, TEM and BET surface area analyses. The results showed that PFM-3 possessed a high ion adsorption capacity (149.25 mg g−1) and could adsorb nitrate ions from water efficiently. The material also showed excellent reusability (after washing with sodium chloride, the absorption capacity was little reduced). More importantly, the magnetic microspheres could be removed from waste water easily via introducing an external magnetic field, which made the discoveries in this study provide an effective and environmentally friendly approach for fast removal of nitrate from waste water.

Novel tri-armed star polystyrene-block-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) block copolymers with trimesic acid as central molecules were synthesized by successive two-step atom transfer radical polymerization, and confirmed by Fourier-transform infrared spectra, 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance, and laser light scattering gel chromatography system. The copolymers could self-assemble into spherical core-shell micelles in aqueous media independent on drug loading. Physicochemical properties of the blank and drug-loaded micelles were examined by surface tension, fluorescence spectroscopy, UV-vis, transmission electron microscope, and dynamic light scattering measurements. The copolymer micelles exhibited thermo-triggered phase transition, with low critical solution temperature of 33.7 and 34.6°C, varying with copolymer compositions. The critical aggregate concentrations were 11.62 and 47.61 mg L −1 , and hydrodynamic diameters from 200 to 220 nm. Water-insoluble 10-hydroxycamptothecine was encapsulated into the micelle aggregates to investigate the change in the resulting physicochemical parameters, thermo-triggered in vitro drug release, and the applicability as drug targeting release carriers. MTT assays were carried out to uncover cytotoxicity of the newly developed micelle-based drug formulations. © 2014 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J , 61: 35–45, 2015

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a rapid, sensitive, and non-destructive technique for pesticide detection. However, most reported studies focus on single-analyte detection, and the simultaneous detection of multiple pesticide residues in complex matrices such as tobacco leaves remains challenging. In this study, we developed a portable SERS platform for the simultaneous detection of pendimethalin, propamocarb, and carbendazim using a polystyrene@silver (PS@Ag) core–shell substrate. The method enabled rapid detection (<15 min) with limits of detection (LODs) of 0.1 mg kg−1 for carbendazim, 5 mg kg−1 for pendimethalin, and 10 mg kg−1 for propamocarb in individual analyte detection, which meets the European Union's maximum residue limits (MRLs). In ternary mixtures, the LODs were 1 mg kg−1 for carbendazim, 5 mg kg−1 for pendimethalin and 10 mg kg−1 for propamocarb with strong linearity (R2 = 0.97–0.98). The substrate exhibited uniform enhancement with relative standard deviations (RSDs) of 3.53% for pendimethalin, 7.76% for propamocarb, and 4.70% for carbendazim, and high sensitivity, achieving enhancement factors for all target pesticides (3.4 × 101 for pendimethalin, 3.7 × 101 for propamocarb, and 6.0 × 103 for carbendazim). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report to demonstrate that a PS@Ag SERS substrate combined with a portable Raman spectrometer serves as a highly reliable and promising tool for on-site monitoring of multiple pesticide residues in food safety and environmental applications.

In this paper, we described a new and simple method to produce degradable core cross-linking (CCL) micellar clusters that utilized CdS nanorods to assist thermal oxidation of the polythiol segment of a diblock copolymer, polystyrene-b-polythiol (PS-b-polythiol), at high concentration (2.3 wt%) in a common organic solvent (toluene). The CdS nanorods acted not only as catalysts, but also as templates. The diblock copolymer, PS-b-polythiol, was obtained by aminolysis of polystyrene-b-poly(2-(ethyl-xanthate)ethylmethacrylate) (PS-b-P1), a block copolymer synthesized via reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization using a macroRAFT transfer agent, PS-CTA, and a methacrylate monomer that possessed a protected thiol group, in the presence of n-butylamine and tributyl phosphine. The CdS nanorods were synthesized conveniently by thermolysis of an alkyl xanthate, Cd-HDX. The TEM image clearly showed the formation of micellar clusters and the oxidation procedure was investigated by 1H-NMR and XPS. The formation of core cross-linking (CCL) micelles was confirmed to be reversible by reduction utilizing DTT as the reducing agent.
