The simultaneous realization of high adsorption efficiency, low cost, and scalable fabrication in a single adsorbent remains a significant challenge for the remediation of heavy metals-contaminated water. Here we propose a thermal-induced structural reorganization strategy to convert naturally abundant low-grade attapulgite clay into a porous silicate composite (denoted HJSiCa1.75). The composite exhibits a high uptake capacity (139.39 mg·g −1 ) and removal efficiency over 99.5% across a broad concentration range (10 mg·L −1 -200 mg·L −1 ). In real water matrices (lake water, river water, and tap water), HJSiCa1.75 outperforms commercial activated carbon 2–3 times at equivalent dosages, maintaining a removal efficiency above 99%. Site-energy distribution (SED) analysis reveals that the overall average site density of HJSiCa1.75 (0.012 g·mol/(g·kJ)) exceeds that of GHJ (0.007) and AC-CN (0.004). Thermodynamics analysis revealed that adsorption is spontaneous (ΔG° < 0) and endothermic (ΔH° = +11.95 kJ·mol −1 ). Phytotoxicity tests using aquatic plants indicate substantially reduced toxicity in treated water, as evidenced by seed germination rates and root growth comparable to those observed in clean tap water, thereby suggesting improved ecological compatibility. Pelletization and column adsorption experiments confirm the structural integrity and operational stability of the adsorbent. Mechanistic investigation identifies a synergistic interplay of electrostatic attraction, ion exchange, surface complexation, and in-situ mineralization. Collectively, this work provides a rational structural engineering route to designing high-performance heavy-metal scavengers and facilitates the value-added utilization of natural clay for scalable water purification.

Heavy metal pollution, especially from Pb(II) and Cd(II), poses significant risks due to its persistence and bioaccumulation potential. Traditional removal methods face challenges like high costs and secondary pollution. This study developed a novel three-dimensional porous adsorbent XBS, derived from xanthate-modifiedPhanerochaete sordidaYK-624 (a white-rot fungus), for the rapid and efficient removal of Pb(II) and Cd(II) from wastewater. Characterization showed that XBS has a sponge-like structure with abundant functional groups, significantly enhancing its adsorption capacity and kinetics. XBS achieved 96% Pb(II) and 32% Cd(II) removal within 1 min at a 0.25 g/L dose, reaching over 95% of the maximum adsorption capacity within 30 min for Pb(II) and 240 min for Cd(II). The maximum capacities were 224.72 mg/g for Pb(II) and 82.99 mg/g for Cd(II). Kinetic and thermodynamic analyses indicated a chemisorption-driven process, which was both endothermic and spontaneous. XBS exhibited high selectivity for Pb(II) over Cd(II) and other metals (Tl(I), Cu(II)), attributed to stronger covalent interactions with sulfur- and nitrogen-containing groups. Mechanistic analyses (XRD, FTIR, and XPS) revealed that removal occurs via ion exchange, complexation, and precipitation, forming stable compounds like PbS/CdS and PbCO3/CdCO3. Given its cost-effectiveness, scalability, and high efficiency, XBS represents a promising adsorbent for heavy metal remediation, particularly in Pb(II)-contaminated wastewater treatment applications.

Micromotors that combine the merits of micro-devices with specific functions and autonomous motion have numerous applications in environmental remediation. However, their practical application is blocked by low productivity, a complex preparation process and high cost. Herein, we developed a facile biomass route to synthesize ion-imprinted MnO2/CoFe2O4 Janus micromotors with appealing recognition and capture capacities for Pb(II) ions. Owing to the combination of autonomous motion, the ion imprinting technique, and magnetic recovery, the ion-imprinted MnO2/CoFe2O4 Janus micromotors exhibited highly sensitive and selective adsorption and quick removal of lead ions from water. Such a Janus micromotor reveals great potential in environmental remediation.

In order to promote the heavy metal ions removal of porous gel adsorbent and protect the adsorbent from other pollutants in wastewater, the tetrapod ZnO whiskers (tZnO) modified by amino-chain brush was introduced into the polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix to prepare the PVA/NH 2 @TAtZnO composites with brush structure for toxic Pb(II) removal. The adsorption property, adsorption process and adsorption mechanism were studied by adsorption isotherms, adsorption kinetics, adsorption thermodynamics, SEM-EDS analysis and XPS analysis. And the anti-interference ability and anti-interference mechanism were researched by SEM-EDS analysis and XPS analysis. It was found that the PVA/NH 2 @TAtZnO composites displayed a soft-hard compound pore-brush structure and showed a good selective adsorption on Pb(II). The research of isotherms and kinetics indicated that the adsorption process was fitted well to Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order model, respectively, and the research of thermodynamics revealed the endothermic nature. The adsorption mechanism was inferred as the combination of predominant chemisorption and subsidiary physisorption. Comparing with the neat PVA matrix, the PVA/NH 2 @TAtZnO composites displayed a good anti-interference property on Pb(II) adsorption and showed an alleviative clogging pore-canal structure in the wastewater with SiO 2 NPs or PAC flocculants . The anti-interference intensity ΔQ and anti-interference factor χ were proposed to reflect the anti-interference ability of this adsorbent which was promoted with the increasing amino brush length or density. By the analysis of SEM-EDS and XPS, the anti-interference mechanism was explored as the steric-hinerance effect of tZnO hard brush to suspended SiO 2 NPs pollutant and the coordination effect of functional amino soft brush to soluble PAC pollutant. Besides, the prepared PVA/NH 2 @TAtZnO adsorbent possessed a good reusability under multiple adsorption-desorption processes and also presented a well applicability in real water matrix. The research indicated the huge potential of prepared PVA/NH 2 @TAtZnO adsorbent in heavy metal ions removal.

The continuous expansion of the market demand and scale of commercial amidoxime chelating resins has caused large amounts of resin to be discarded around the world. In this study, the waste amidoxime chelating resin was reutilized as an adsorbent for the removal and recovery of Pb(II), Cu(II), Cd(II) and Zn(II) ions from aqueous solutions. The physical morphology and chemical composition of the waste amidoxime chelating resin (WAC-resin) from the factory was characterized by the elemental analyzer, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The influence of the initial metal ions concentration, contact time, temperature and the solution pH on the adsorption performance of the metal ions was explored by batch experiments. It was shown that the optimal pH was 4. Kinetic studies revealed that adsorption process corresponded with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the adsorption isotherm was consistent with the Langmuir model. At room temperature, the adsorption capacities of WAC-resin for Pb2+, Cu2+, Zn2+and Cd2+reached 114.6, 93.4, 24.4 and 20.7 mg/g, respectively. Keywords:waste amidoxime chelating resin;characterization;reutilization;heavy metals

A fern leave-like structure metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), MIL-47(as) has been fabricated by a simple one-pot hydrothermal reaction and characterized by a variety of means, such as X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, micro-morphology analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and specific surface area and pore size distribution. The as-prepared MOFs were found to be an effective material for the selective electrochemical detection of microgram levels of Pb(II), Cu(II) and Hg(II) in aqueous solution performed by differential pulse voltammetry. The electrochemical properties and applications of the modified electrode were also studied, in which operational parameters such as pH, deposition potential, and deposition time, were optimized to detect trace amounts of Pb(II), Cu(II) and Hg(II) ions. The as-prepared electrode not only has good stability and repeatability, but also has good practical detection ability.

A novel dual-frequency ultrasound-assisted enzymatic digestion (DUED) technique was used to extract Pb(II) from certified reference materials (CRMs) of wheat flour. Following this, the interactions of Pb(II) with wheat proteins were investigated to provide evidence for the selection of enzyme species. The results showed that the simultaneous use of α-amylase and flavourzyme resulted in the recovery of 97.9% of Pb(II) in 6 min under a 40 kHz ultrasonic bath combined with a 20 kHz ultrasonic probe. The exopeptidase activity of the flavourzyme was found to be the main contributor to the extraction of Pb(II) from the CRMs. Additionally, the proposed method exhibited a low detection limit (8.2 ng/g) and high recoveries of real samples (93.4%-112.2%) with RSD less than 7.33%. Furthermore, the oxygen-containing groups of wheat proteins, the nitrogen-containing groups of albumins and globulins, and the sulfur-containing groups of gliadins and glutenins were found to offer coordination sites for Pb(II).

Eco-friendly adsorbents for removing heavy metals from wastewater are urgently needed. This work fabricated an amidoxime-modified polypropylene (PP) fiber as a cost-effective and recyclable adsorbent to remove heavy metals. The laboratory study aimed to evaluate the competitive adsorption of Cu(II), Pb(II) and Zn(II) onto AO-PP fiber in aqueous solutions. The adsorption isothermal data fitted the Langmuir isotherm well, and the maximum adsorption capacities (mg/g) were in the order of Cu (47.23)>Pb (45.64)>Zn (37.78) when applying the Langmuir isotherm at pH 5.0. Adsorption equilibrium could be reached within 90 min. The adsorption was pH-dependent and followed the pseudo-second-order model well. The adsorption can be explained by the coordination between N- and O-containing groups and the metallic ions. Metallic ion affinity, steric hindrance , and covalent index were the main factors affecting the competitive adsorption behavior. Regeneration experiments revealed that the obtained adsorbent maintained favorable adsorption capacity even after 20 cycles. Cement mortars incorporating the metal-adsorbed fiber exhibited improved mechanical properties and satisfactory leaching performance. This work experimentally validated the effective use of AO-PP fiber to capture heavy metals from wastewater as well as subsequent sequestration of the recycled fibers in a suitable material matrix , providing a new reference for heavy metal harvesting and final disposal.

A novel multiple active sites cellulose-based adsorbent (MCC/TEPAA-BCTTC) with a high density of multiple active adsorption sites (N, O, S) was prepared by using epichlorohydrin cross-linking microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) with tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA), followed by grafting with bis(carboxymethyl) trithiocarbonate (BCTTC). It was shown that the removal rates of MCC/TEPAA-BCTTC for Pb(II) (1 mg/L), Cu(II) (3 mg/L) and Cr(VI) (1 mg/L) reached 100 %, 98 % and 99 %, respectively, and the remaining concentration after adsorption reached the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) standards for Pb(II) and Cu(II) and the China integrated wastewater discharge standard for Cr(VI). These results indicate that the high removal rate of MCC/TEPAA-BCTTC for removing anionic and cationic heavy metal ions in low-concentration mixed heavy metal ions environments was mainly due to the high density of multiple adsorption sites that act via multiple cooperative mechanisms.

The removal of heavy metal ions and medical antibiotics from wastewater is crucial for environmental protection and human health. However, the adsorption capacities and reusability of previously reported adsorbent materials have been insufficient for efficient and sustainable wastewater treatment . In this study, we present a composite material, UiO-66-AMP@PAN, synthesized from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and polyacrylonitrile (PAN), which exhibits superior adsorption properties and reusability. The material demonstrates excellent adsorption capacities for heavy metal ions Pb(II) and Cr(VI) as well as the antibiotic tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH), among which the maximum adsorption capacities for Pb(II)(pH=7) and Cr(VI)(pH=5) and antibiotic tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) (pH=9) were 455.8 mg/g, 442.08 mg/g and 405.92 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption efficiency of UiO-66-AMP@PAN as an adsorbent for adsorbing Pb(II)(pH=7) and Cr(VI)(pH=5) and the antibiotic tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) (pH=9) remained above 90% even after ten consecutive cycles. The performance of UiO-66-AMP@PAN as an adsorbent has remained unchanged across multiple adsorption-desorption cycles, demonstrating its potential for long-term use in wastewater treatment applications. This innovative approach paves the way for the development of more efficient and environmentally friendly adsorption materials to address the challenges posed by heavy metal ions in wastewater and medical antibiotics.

Heavy metal pollution in water, particularly Pb ion pollution, has seriously threatened human life and health. Therefore, the manufacture of efficient and sensitive heavy metal ion detection materials is essential. The objective of this study was to improve the electrochemical detection performance of laser-induced graphene (LIG) for Pb(II). Considering the excellent ion affinity and high activity of transition metals, Ni-Fe alloy coatings were prepared on the surface of LIG through jet electrodeposition. The prepared LIG and Ni-Fe/LIG were qualitatively analyzed through Raman spectrometry, X-ray diffraction analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The surface micromorphologies, charge transfer capabilities, and electrochemically active surface areas of LIG and Ni-Fe/LIG were characterized. The detection range and limit of detection (LOD) of Pb(II) for LIG and Ni-Fe /LIG as electrochemical sensors were analyzed. Results showed that compared with LIG, Ni-Fe/LIG had more surface active sites, a higher charge transfer capability, and a larger electrochemically active surface area that reached 0.828 cm2. Ni-Fe/LIG had a detection range of 20–1200 µg/L and an LOD of as low as 0.771 µg/L. Ni-Fe/LIG demonstrated a better electrochemical detection performance for Pb(II) than LIG when used as an electrochemical sensor. Keywords:Pb(II) detection;Ni-Fe/LIG;jet electrodeposition;electrochemical sensor

ZIF-8, a metal-organic framework, has large sorption capacities for a series of heavy metals. However, it is difficult to be separated from aqueous solution, limiting its practical application in wastewater treatment . Herein, ZIF-8 was in-situ grown on the polyethyleneimine-functionalized alginate to construct the ZIF-8 @ALG-PEI aerogels with a three-dimensional network structure. This synthesis strategy not only overcomes the above-mentioned defects of ZIF-8, but also provides more functional groups, pores, and channels. The synthesized ZIF-8 @ALG-PEI aerogels exhibit outstanding removal performance towards Pb(II) and Cd(II) with maximum sorption capacity values of 295.986 and 249.838 mg·g −1 , respectively. The sorption of Pb(II) and Cd(II) on ZIF-8 @ALG-PEI is strongly affected by pH, but little influenced by ionic strength. In the multi-component sorption systems, ZIF-8 @ALG-PEI shows better sorption affinity and selectivity for Pb(II) than for Cd(II). The three-dimensional network structure constructed by alginate makes Pb(II) and Cd(II) easier to contact with the surfaces of ZIF-8 @ALG-PEI. The strong surface complexation of the O- and N-containing functional groups provided by ZIF-8 and PEI with Pb(II) and Cd(II) makes the largest contribution to the removal of Pb(II) and Cd(II) by ZIF-8 @ALG-PEI. In summary, the experimental findings of this work prove that the synthesized ZIF-8 @ALG-PEI aerogels have promising applications in practical wastewater treatment .
