A series of copper-promoted platinum supported on activated carbon (Cu-Pt/AC) catalysts were investigated for glycerol oxidation to lactic acid. The catalytic performance of 1.0%Pt/AC catalyst was greatly influenced by Cu loading (0.1–2.0 wt%). Among them, the 0.5%Cu–1.0%Pt/AC catalyst showed the best promotional effect, whose lactic acid yield was 2.4 times of that on 1.0%Pt/AC under same reaction conditions. Characterizations were carried out to explore the relationships between catalyst properties and reaction performances. TEM images show that the introduction of Cu improves the dispersion of Pt and Cu, and some Pt-Cu interfaces are detected by HR-TEM, which would facilitate the glycerol transformation. XPS and H 2 -TPR analyses reveal that good catalyst performance is related with not only a proper surface Pt/Cu molar ratio, but also copper species’ oxidation states. Cu + and Cu 0 species favor glycerol conversion and lactic acid production, whereas large CuO particles facilitate the formation of glyceric acid.

Abstract N -Acety-L-cysteine (NAC), enriched with multiple electron-rich groups involving –SH, –C=O, and –COOH, exhibits strong affinities to transition metal ions. Herein, NAC was adopted as the stabilizing agent to synthesize a series of peroxidase-like Pt nanoclusters (NCs) with different physicochemical properties. Both the cluster size and the charge state of NAC–Pt NCs are highly dependent upon the molar ratio of [K 2 PtCl 4 ]/[NAC], contributing to different peroxidase mimicking activities. The most active Pt nanozyme (~ 1.7 nm), composed of 60% metallic Pt 0 and 40% positively charged Pt 2+ respectively, exhibits the K m of 0.132 mM for 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine and 35 mM for H 2 O 2 . Based on the heparin-activated enzymatic activity of NAC–Pt at pH 6.0, an ultrasensitive test was established for quantitative determination of heparin, giving the linear response of 0.5–20 μg/mL as well as the limit of detection of 2 × 10 −3 μg/mL. This proposed method is also applicable in biological fluid for practical applications. Such a colorimetric method possesses several advantages involving high sensitivity, short response, eco-friendly synthesis, low consumption of material and energy, free of expensive instrument, as well as simple operation. A series of mesoporous ZSM-5-x (x = Si/Al molar ratio) supports, possessing various Si/Al ratios, were prepared without using the secondary templates, and the influences of acidity of ZSM-5-x on catalytic performance of Pt/HZSM-5-x samples prepared by the conventional wetness impregnation in naphthalene hydrogenation were investigated. The results show that decreasing Si/Al ratios of mesoporous ZSM-5 supports promotes the dispersion of the supported Pt species, and the catalytic efficiencies of Pt/HZSM-5-x samples for naphthalene hydrogenation depend on the integrated effects of the Pt dispersion, the acidity, and the mesoporous structure of ZSM-5 supports. This work provides the detailed influences of acidity of mesoporous ZSM-5 on catalytic performance of supported Pt catalysts in naphthalene hydrogenation.

Precisely constructed diatomic metal sites that bridge the gap between single-atom dispersion and cluster-like synergy offer a promising strategy to overcome the activity-selectivity trade-off in heterogeneous catalysis. In this work, we report the synthesis of a non-bonding diatomic Pt 2 -ND@G catalyst via a two-step atomic layer deposition for the selective hydrogenation of m-dinitrobenzene. Aberration-corrected high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy combined with X-ray absorption spectroscopy reveals that Pt 2 -ND@G predominantly contains high-density non-bonding Pt diatomic sites with well-tuned electronic interactions. Pt 2 -ND@G achieves complete m-dinitrobenzene conversion with >99.0% selectivity toward m-phenylenediamine and retains high stability over five cycles under mild conditions, outperforming reference catalysts including isolated single atoms, fully exposed clusters, and nanoparticles. Experimental and theoretical studies further suggest that the electron-deficient non-bonding diatomic Pt sites synergistically activate both m-dinitrobenzene and hydrogen, while also promoting the efficient desorption of m-phenylenediamine. This work highlights the structural and electronic advantages of high-density diatomic catalysts for multi-step hydrogenation and offers a versatile platform for catalyst design.

Electrocatalytic synthesis of valuable biofuels and chemicals from biomass-derived acids is a promising approach, but selectively producing deoxygenated hydrocarbons is still a great challenge. In this work, we investigated selective electrochemical decarboxylation of n-octanoic acid to produce hydrocarbons (n-tetradecane, n-heptane, and n-heptene) in a single electrolytic cell at room temperature. Pt nanoparticles with different morphologies (nanospheres, nanoflowers, and nanothorns) and further Pt nanothorns with different plane distributions on carbon fiber paper (CFP) were fabricated by a controllable electrodeposition method. The results proved that the Pt(311) plane has the best selectivity and intrinsic activity for decarboxylation products, especially for Kolbe hydrocarbons. The Pt(110) plane shows a similar intrinsic activity as the Pt(311) planes. High selectivity (75%), yield (35%), and Faraday efficiency (34%) for hydrocarbons were achieved over the Pt nanothorn (Pt-NT), which were approximately 1.6, 2.3, and 3.3 times that of Pt nanoflowers, Pt nanospheres, and Pt/C, respectively. The high electrocatalytic activity of Pt nanothorns was attributed to its high electrochemically active surface area (ECSA) and enhanced intrinsic activity derived from the high level of Pt(311) and Pt(110) planes.

Platinum-based intermetallic compounds (IMCs) play a vital role as electrocatalysts in a range of energy and environmental technologies, such as proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). However, the synthesis of IMCs necessitates recombination of ordered Pt-M metallic bonds with high temperature driving, which is generally accompanied by side effects for catalysts’ structure and performance. In this work, we highlight that the semimetal atoms can trigger covalent interactions to break synthesis-temperature limitation of platinum-based intermetallic compounds and benefit for fuel-cell electrocatalysis. Attributed from partial fillings of p-block in semimetal elements, the strong covalent interaction of d-p π backbonding can benefit the recombination of ordered Pt-M metallic bonds (PtGe, PtSb and PtTe) in the synthesis process. Moreover, this covalent interaction in metallic states can further promote both electron transport and orbital fillings of active sites in fuel cells. The semimetal-Pt IMCs were obtained with a temperature 300 K lower than that needed for the synthesis of metal-Pt intermetallic compounds and reached the highest CO-tolerant oxygen reduction activity (0.794 A mg−1 at 0.9 V and 5.1% decay under CO poisoning) among reported electrocatalysts. We anticipate that semimetal-Pt IMCs will offer new insights for rational design of advanced electrocatalysts for fuel cells.

Industrial sources, such as steel and power activities continue to emit substantial amounts of CO, but have not received the same level of attention as mobile sources due to a lack of relevant regulations. This work reports that a commercial Pt/Al 2 O 3 catalyst used in vehicle CO catalytic converters may face severe selenium (Se) poisoning deactivation from industrial sources. The turnover frequency (TOF) of the Pt/Al 2 O 3 catalyst (250 °C) decreased from 2.18 s −1 to 0.12 s −1 with only 0.49 wt% (ICP) Se deposition. Se deposition causes the Pt 5d orbital shift to a higher energy state, raising the oxidation state of platinum. As a result, the back-donation from the 5d electrons of Pt to the 2π* antibonding orbital of the adsorbed CO molecule is inhibited, weakening the bonding between Pt/Al 2 O 3 and the CO antibonding orbital, thereby significantly reducing CO activation ability. DRIFTS results, combined with apparent and microscopic kinetics, indicate that the surface of Se deposited Pt/Al 2 O 3 catalyst remains O* available (500 K, θ O* = 0.16), and the rate-controlling step changes from O 2 + 2* → 2O* to CO + * → CO*. The work suggests that the application of CO catalytic oxidation technology for industrial source should fully consider the toxic effect of Se, but is often neglected.

Developing efficient and durable oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts is critical for advancing proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). While Pt-based alloy catalysts exhibit enhanced ORR activity, their disordered nanostructures often compromise durability. In this work, a carbon-supported Pt 3 Cu alloy catalyst with a core-shell architecture (Pt 3 Cu@Pt/C) was synthesized via a controlled impregnation-reduction method followed by acid-washing to construct a Pt-rich shell. Comprehensive physicochemical characterizations confirmed the formation of a face-centered cubic (FCC) structure with a Pt 3 Cu core and a Pt-rich shell. Alloying with Cu was found to downshift the Pt d-band center, thereby optimizing the adsorption strength of oxygen intermediates. Electrochemical evaluations revealed that the Pt 3 Cu@Pt/C catalyst exhibited a mass activity (MA) of 0.37 A mg −1 and an electrochemical surface area (ECSA) of 89.43 m 2 g −1 , surpassing commercial Pt/C. Although the core-shell treatment slightly reduced ORR activity compared to untreated Pt 3 Cu/C, the Pt 3 Cu@Pt/C catalyst demonstrated exceptional durability, retaining >70% of its initial ECSA and showing only a 27% decay in MA after 30,000 accelerated stress test cycles, far outperforming both Pt 3 Cu/C and commercial Pt/C. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the Pt shell increased Cu vacancy formation energy by 0.8 eV, effectively suppressing Cu dissolution and enhancing structural stability. This work highlights the synergistic electronic and geometric effects of core-shell nanostructures in balancing ORR activity and durability, providing insights for designing advanced Pt-based catalysts.

Impurity ions derived from the catalyst synthesis or operation would profoundly affect the performance of Pt-based metal oxides. In this study, we report a severe, support-dependent poisoning effect on Pt-based catalysts, with the severity varying significantly with the support material (TiO2, CeO2, and Al2O3) and the type of catalytic reaction (propane and CO oxidation). Specifically, the poisoned Pt/TiO2 catalyst showed negligible propane oxidation activity even at 650 °C, while simple water washing restored its activity, achieving 90% propane conversion at 324 °C. In contrast, the detrimental effect of K+ ions was much weaker in CO oxidation or when nonreducible Al2O3 was used as the support. Combined characterization and theoretical calculations reveal that the oxophilic K+ ions passivate the active PtOx nanoclusters and suppress redox dynamics. More crucially, the spillover effect between metal and support was blocked, such as oxygen or hydrogen spillover. Strong CO2 and H2O adsorption also contributed to the serious activity loss on the K+-poisoned Pt/TiO2 catalyst. This work elucidates the support- and reaction-dependent poisoning role of K+ ions on Pt-based catalysts, offering critical insights for designing robust and efficient catalysts for deep propane combustion.

1,2,6-Hexanetriol tailors KL zeolites with varied micro-/mesopore ratios. • ALD introduces Pt species into both microporous and mesoporous KL regions • A balanced micro-/mesopore architecture promotes toluene production. • An optimized pore architecture suppresses the formation of isomers. The pore architecture of KL zeolite plays a critical role in linear alkane aromatization over Pt-based catalysts. However, how the interplay between microporous confinement and mesopore-enabled diffusion regulates Pt species and the subsequent formation of aromatics remains insufficiently understood. Herein, 1,2,6-hexanetriol was selected as a zeolite growth modifier to tailor the porous structure of KL zeolite with varied micro-/mesopore ratios. Pt species were then introduced into the KL zeolites by atomic layer deposition, affording a series of Pt/KL catalysts in which Pt species were distributed in both microporous and mesoporous regions. The Pt/KL-T 1 catalyst with a mesopore-to-micropore volume ratio of 1.2 gave an enhanced toluene formation rate (7.6 × 10 2 mmol Toluene ·g Pt –1 ·h –1 ), which was approximately twice that of the purely microporous Pt/KL catalyst. Combined structural characterizations and molecular dynamics simulations indicated an appropriate balance between micropore and mesopore facilitates the diffusion and further dehydrocyclization of alkene (σC 7 = ) intermediates, while suppressing isomer formation. These findings clarify the balance of micro- and mesoporosity in KL zeolite and provide a strategy to tune Pt/KL-based catalysts for alkane aromatization. We report a covalent hybridization strategy to construct a robust optical limiting material by grafting Pt (II) complexes onto carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The Pt (II) moieties are stably anchored to the CNT surface via amide bonds, as evidenced by FT-IR, Raman, XPS, and TEM/EDS analyses. These results confirm covalent linkage formation and reveal strong interfacial electronic interactions between the two components. The covalent integration enhances dispersion stability and modulates interfacial charge transfer and excited-state energy dissipation pathways. Optical limiting performance was investigated at 532 nm with 80% linear transmittance using the F 50 value (incident fluence at which the output drops to 50% of the linear response) as the quantitative metric. The optimal hybrid (Pt–NH 2 400 mg in 13% MWCNTs-COOH) shows a significantly lower F 50 of 0.8 J cm −2 compared with pristine Pt–NH 2 (F 50 > 4.0 J cm −2 ) and MWCNTs-COOH (F 50 = 2.1 J cm −2 ). This enhancement comes from synergistic interactions between the Pt (II) complexes and CNTs. The covalent bond enables efficient interfacial charge transfer and multipath energy dissipation, combining reverse saturable absorption (RSA) from Pt (II) complexes with nonlinear scattering and photothermal effects from CNTs. Transient absorption dynamics reveal that the covalently grafted Pt complex acts as an efficient photon sensitizer and reverse saturable absorber, while the MWCNT framework serves as a rapid energy acceptor and dissipater, validating the synergistic mechanism. This work provides a practical route for engineering high-performance broadband optical limiting materials through covalent grafting. It also offers mechanistic insights into cooperative nonlinear optical behavior in metal-complex-carbon-nanomaterial systems.

Grain-oriented growth enabled by aligned template seeds stands as the cornerstone for developing advanced textured ferroelectric ceramics. In this work, the templated-grain-growth behavior and corresponding electric properties of [001]-textured PIN-PMN-PT ternary ferroelectric solutions with high PIN content were investigated systematically. Pronounced grain-oriented-growth was achieved as PIN content within 45 mol%, while texturing development was significantly constrained in ceramics with a PIN content exceeding 50 mol%. The failure of highly-texturing could be attributed to the excessive lattice mismatch between BaTiO 3 templates and PIN-PMN-PT matrix. Concurrently, higher PIN content contributed to enhanced piezoelectric response in PIN-PMN-PT textured ceramics under high electric field loading. The highly [001]-textured PIN-PMN-PT ceramics with F 001 > 96% revealed remarkably high strain S m > 0.40% accompanied by ultra-low strain hysteresis H s ∼ 6.0%.
