Space confined growth of RuO2/Ru carbon nanorods for highly efficient electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Ruilin He,Pan Yang,Maoyuan Zhang,Jingchuan Wang,Yawei Hao,Lijun Yang

Exploring efficient and robust electrocatalysts with low cost for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is critical for practical application of electrochemical water splitting. Ru-based platinum group electrocatalysts shows great potential in HER, however, Ru suffer from sluggish kinetics of water dissociation for electrochemical reduction of water to hydrogen in alkaline environments . Here, oxygen atoms are introduced into Ru by simple secondary heat treatment to form Ru–O–C bonds to weak the strength of Ru–H bond. The overpotential of the catalyst is only 19 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and the stability is greatly improved. Theoretical calculations reveal that the Ru–O–C structure formed in RuO 2 facilitates the dissociation of H–OH, which is the rate-determining step in alkaline electrolytes , leading to significant improvement in HER activity.

Zeolite-Templated Carbons Supported Rh and Ru Electrocatalysts for Highly Active Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Yuanxin Cao,Xiaoming Yu,Tianfu Wang,Jiahao Li,Nan Li,Anbang Ge,Jie Ying,Tongwen Yu

Here, we report the systematical synthesis of zeolite-templated carbon (ZTC) supported Ru and Rh mono- or bi-metallic electrocatalysts towards hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The zeolite A or ZSM-5 derived ZTC supports and metal sites were adjusted, and all electrocatalysts outperformed the commercial Pt/C electrocatalyst for HER performance. In particular, the RhRu/(ZTC/ZSM5) sample exhibited superior catalytic performance with the overpotential of 24.8 mV@10 mA ⋅ cm −2 , and outstanding stability with 1 mV drop after 20000 cyclic voltammetry circles. This work offers a simple impregnation method for the synthesis of highly performed HER electrocatalysts supported on porous zeolite-templated carbon.

Ultrafine Ru Nanoparticles Supported on Mesoporous Silica for Hydrogen Production via Decomposition of Ammonia

Shu Tang,Jun Ding,Wenyi Li,Shengbo Zhang,Haimin Zhang

Graphical Utilizing ruthenium-loaded amino-modified dendritic mesoporous silica microspheres (DMSMs) as catalysts for ammonia decomposition demonstrated outstanding activity at low temperatures. This is attributed to the distinctive mesoporous structure of DMSMs and the regulation of electronic structure through amino modification. In addition, the catalyst exhibited consistent catalytic activity throughout a 60 hour stability test. We reported metallic ruthenium (Ru) nanoparticles loaded on amino modified dendritic mesoporous silica microspheres (Ru/NH 2 -DMSMs) for ammonia decomposition to hydrogen. The sizes of the loaded Ru nanoparticles on carrier are 2–3 nm, providing rich active sites for ammonia decomposition reaction. As a result, the obtained Ru/NH 2 -DMSMs-5.1 can afford almost ~100 % ammonia decomposition at 550 °C, due to the unique mesoporous structure of DMSMs inhibiting the aggregation of active Ru nanoparticles and enhancing the mass transport of ammonia.

V-doped activated Ru/Ti2.5V0.5C2 dual-active center accelerate hydrogen production from ammonia borane

Linyan Bian,Licheng Liang,Yanping Fan,Xianyun Liu,Fei Liang,Qiuming Peng,Shumin Han,Lili Liu,Baozhong Liu

Designing and constructing the active center of Ru-based catalysts is the key to efficient hydrolysis of ammonia borane (NH 3 BH 3 , AB) for hydrogen production. Herein, V-doped Ru/Ti 2.5 V 0.5 C 2 dual-active center catalysts were synthesized, showing excellent catalytic ability for AB hydrolysis. The corresponding turnover frequency value was 1072 min −1 at 298 K, and the hydrolysis rate r B of AB was 235 × 10 3 mL·min −1 ·g Ru –1 . X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results indicated that the interaction between V-doped Ti 3 C 2 and catalytic metal Ru transfers electrons from Ti to Ru, resulting in electron-rich Ru species. According to density functional theory calculations, the activation energy and reaction dissociation energy of the reactants AB and H 2 O on V-doped catalysts were lower than those of Ru/Ti 3 C 2 , thus optimizing the catalytic kinetics of AB hydrolysis. The modification strategy of V-doped Ti 3 C 2 provides a new pathway for the development of high-performance catalysts for AB hydrolysis.

4f-modified Ru-O polarity as a descriptor for efficient electrocatalytic acidic oxygen evolution

Zhang Xiuxiu,Zhang Yuhao,Protsenko Bogdan O.,Soldatov Mikhail A.,Zhang Jing,Yang Chenyu,Bo Shuowen,Wang Huijuan,Chen Xin,Wang Chao,Cheng Weiren,Liu Qinghua

The development of non-iridium-based oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts is crucial for proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE), but hydrogen production remains a great challenge because of sluggish OER kinetics and severe catalyst dissolution. Here, we present a 4 f -induced covalent polarity modulation strategy for the construction of 4 f -orbital-modified RuO 2 (4 f -RuO 2 ) nanocatalysts with tunable Ru–O polarity. We find that the OER activity of 4 f -RuO 2 shows a volcano shape as a function of the polarity of Ru–O bond. Consequently, the best 4 f -Nd-RuO 2 catalyst possesses an ultra-low overpotential of 214 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and robust electrochemical stability in 0.1 M HClO 4 . Theoretical calculations coupled with in situ synchrotron infrared and X-ray absorption spectroscopy analyses reveal that the modulation of Ru–O polarity in RuO 2 by the valence f − p − d gradient orbital coupling can modify the adsorption energy of the reaction intermediates and suppress the participation of lattice oxygen to avoid over-oxidation of Ru, which can thus serve as an effective descriptor for fine tuning the activity and durability of acidic OER nanocatalysts.

Anchoring Ru-Ru2P heterojunction on P-doped graphene for enhanced HER performances of water electrolysis

Longyang Liu,Zichen Wang,Xueyan Zhang,Lijie Luo,Yongjun Chen

Highly active and stable electrocatalysts are highly desired for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in water electrolysis. In this study, a ruthenium-ruthenium phosphide heterojunction (Ru-Ru 2 P) anchored on phosphorus-doped graphene (PCSG) was fabricated via a mild molten salt template method. The graphene was synthesized from discarded coconut shells sourced from Hainan. We found that the heterojunction structure could accelerate electron transfer, while the graphene provided more exposed active sites, significantly enhancing the HER activity of the catalyst. The catalyst prepared at 800 °C with 30 mg of RuCl 3 (Ru-Ru 2 P/2D-PCSG-800) exhibited low HER overpotentials of 31 mV in alkaline and 57 mV in acidic electrolytes at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , respectively, which were comparable to those of commercial 20 % Pt/C catalyst (36 mV in alkaline and 40 mV in acidic electrolytes). Moreover, the catalyst demonstrated high stability with no significant change in current density after 125 hours of operation. Density functional theory calculations revealed that the Ru-Ru 2 P heterojunction could rearrange charge and modify the Ru d -band center, optimizing the adsorption energy of active *H (|ΔG *H |) and breakage energy of *H-OH bond (ΔG H2O ).

Electronic structure engineering of ultradispersed Ru in NiO nanobricks for selective and efficient ethanol electrooxidation

Tianxiang Luo,Jingyi Xie,Xue Li,Xiuwen Wang,Li Sun,Fanqiang Bu,Bing Zhao,Wei Kan,Yuqian He

Integrating the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) into hybrid water-splitting systems presents a dual advantage of reducing anodic overpotentials and co-generating high-value chemicals. Nevertheless, the rational design of catalysts that reconcile high noble-metal atom economy with robust durability remains a formidable task. Here, we report a nanobrick-structured NiO electrocatalyst decorated with highly dispersed Ru species supported on nickel foam (Ru-NiO/NF), in which no Ru nanoparticles or clusters were detected. The catalyst was synthesized via a hydrothermal process followed by ion exchange. The introduction of Ru into the NiO host lattice effectively modulates the local electronic configuration and accelerates charge-transfer kinetics, while simultaneously regulating surface hydroxyl species (OH*) and expanding the electrochemically active surface area. Benefiting from these interfacial synergies, the optimized Ru 2 -NiO/NF delivers current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm −2 at low potentials of 1.08 ± 0.01 V and 1.34 ± 0.02 V, respectively, in 1.0 M KOH containing 0.5 M ethanol, thus outperforming pristine NiO/NF. The catalyst also achieves an acetate selectivity of 96.1 % and a Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 93.8 %. Complementary experimental evidence and density functional theory (DFT) calculations elucidate that the robust electronic coupling between Ru and Ni centers optimizes the adsorption energetics of key intermediates, thereby lowering the kinetic barriers for selective ethanol-to-acetate conversion. This work offers insights into the precise manipulation of electronic states in hybrid oxides for efficient, value-added electrocatalytic applications.

Ultrafine Ru nanoparticles anchored to porous g-C3N4 as efficient catalysts for ammonia borane hydrolysis

Yong-Ting Li,Shi-Hao Zhang,Guang-Ping Zheng,Pu Liu,Zhi-Kun Peng,Xiu-Cheng Zheng

Hierarchical porous g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets are prepared from melamine using NH 4 Cl as dynamic gas templates to anchor the ultrafine Ru nanoparticles (NPs) with a facile adsorption -in situ reduction strategy. The results reveal that 1: 3 is the optimal mass ratio for melamine to NH 4 Cl and the Ru NPs are evenly dispersed in the porous network of g-C 3 N 4 in the corresponding catalysts. Remarkably, the porous catalysts exhibit superior catalytic activity and satisfactory recyclability for ammonia borane (NH 3 -BH 3 , AB) hydrolysis. The corresponding turnover frequency is as high as 122.2 × 10 3 mL H 2 · g Ru -1 · min -1 and the apparent activation energy (35.6 kJ mol −1 ) is competitive. AB hydrolysis is of 1.17-order and near zero-order with respect to the Ru and AB concentrations, respectively. The results demonstrate that the Ru/g-C 3 N 4 catalysts are promising in developing an alternative clean and environmentally friendly energy carrier from the hydrogen storage materials.

Electronegativity Enhanced Strong Metal–Support Interaction in Ru@F–Ni3N for Enhanced Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution

Qiang Fu,Lei Lin,Tao Wu,Qinghua Zhang,Xianjie Wang,Lingling Xu,Jun Zhong,Lin Gu,Zhihua Zhang,Ping Xu,Bo Song

Precious metals (Pt, Ir, Ru, and so on) and related compounds usually demonstrate superb catalytic activity for electrochemical hydrogen production. However, scarcity and stability are still challenges for hydrogen evolution reaction, even for single-atomic-site electrocatalysts. Herein, a fluorine (F) doping strategy is proposed to enhance the strong metal–support interaction between the F-doped Ni3N support and the loaded ruthenium (Ru) species. Via synergistically modulating both the Ru loading amount and F doping concentration, outstanding HER activity was achieved in Ru@F–Ni3N with an overpotential (η) of 115 mV at 100 mA cm–2, superior to the benchmark Pt/C (η = 201 mV). Density functional theory simulation in combination with X-ray photoelectron spectra and X-ray absorption spectroscopy characterizations convincingly demonstrate that, with the strongest electronegativity, F doping could effectively stabilize Ru atoms doped in the F–Ni3N substrate and simultaneously reduce the H bonding strength, which accelerated the desorption of H2. These findings provide a facile strategy to modulate both catalytic activities and stabilities of heteroatom-loaded catalytic materials.

Wubing Yao,Jiali Wang,Lili He,Dongdong Cao,Jianguo Yang

A ruthenium catalytic ortho-C–H diborylation of 2-arylpyridine derivatives, including challenging 2-phenoxypyridine functions, using a remarkably low catalyst loading and a low-cost and bench-stable boron source, has been developed. The novel strategy shows high activity with excellent selectivity and may offer a versatile and green alternative to currently employed high loadings of noble metals or extra additives for the selective borylations.

Phase-Engineered Ru-MoC Heterointerfaces for Efficient Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution by Boosting Interfacial Water Dissociation

Xue Bai,Biao Feng,Jiyao Huang,Jingyi Tian,Yufei Jiang,Youran Yu,Xizhang Wang,Lijun Yang,Hongwen Huang,Zheng Hu,Qiang Wu

Alkaline hydrogen evolution (HER) performance of Ru catalysts is limited by the high activation energy barriers of water dissociation and the poisoning of active sites by OH * intermediates. Herein, the Mo x C nanoclusters with distinct crystalline phases (MoC and Mo 2 C) are supported on hierarchical N-doped carbon nanocages (hNCNC). Long-range disordered Ru nanoclusters are induced to grow on the MoC nanoclusters due to the presence of Mo vacancies, while crystalline Ru nanoclusters grow on both Mo 2 C nanoclusters and hNCNC due to fewer defects. The Ru-MoC/hNCNC achieves an ultralow overpotential (@10 mA cm −2 ) of 20 mV, a high turnover frequency of 21.8 H 2 s −1 and robust durability in 1 M KOH, much superior to the counterpart of Ru-Mo 2 C/hNCNC. The anion-exchange membrane water electrolysis device with Ru-MoC/hNCNC cathode delivers an industrial-scale current of 1 A cm −2 at ≈1.65 V in 1.0 M KOH. The theoretical calculation, together with in situ Raman spectra, reveals that the Ru-MoC heterointerfaces promote the water dissociation kinetics on Mo sites, leading to the detached formation of OH * on MoC and H * on Ru. This spatial decoupling of OH * and H * can mitigate the OH * poisoning of Ru and promote subsequent H 2 formation, thereby demonstrating excellent alkaline HER performance.
